The main impediment in long-distance communications is nonlinear interference (NLI), stemming from nonlinear effects in optical fibers. While Digital signal processing algorithms offer partial mitigation, the inherent nonlinear nature of the fiber, coupled with predominant dispersion effects, continues to challenge the increase of transmission throughputs. Addressing nonlinearity at the information source through signal modulation technology is at the heart of our research. Traditional modulation schemes, as spectral efficiency climbs, such as QAM, become increasingly susceptible to NLI while their Mean Squared Euclidean Distance (MSED) diminishes. While multi-dimensional (MD) modulation yields improved linear and partial nonlinear gains, it has not yet demonstrated tangible benefits. On the other hand, the emergence of probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), preferred for its enhanced linear gain and compatibility with conventional modulation hardware and software, introduces additional NLI. Consequently, the design of nonlinear-tolerant PCS is emerging as a pivotal research direction. Our thesis begins with a novel MD modulation for uniformly distributed signals. Then, we propose a novel approach combining MD with PCS to examine performance variations. Delving into PCS, we investigate the enumerative sphere shaping distribution matcher (DM), initially from an MD stance, and design a DM optimized for nonlinear tolerance over shorter distances. Subsequently, we introduce a new NLI measurement technique, accounting for dispersion effects. Integrating this with the sequence selection framework of PCS, we achieve successful long-distance transmission with notable nonlinear gains

A computer simulation analysis of the performance of trellis codes on telephone channel is done in this thesis. The simulated schemmes use coded modulations with multi- dimensional signal sets jointly optimized under the rule of mapping by set partitioning. An efficient iterative technique to obtain the structure of the encoder/modulator proposed by Wei [13] is examined. The performance of the CCITT recommended code with bidimensional constelation is compared to the performance of a four-dimensional code obtained with the Wei method.

This thesis proposes a novel control method for three phase permanent magnet synchronous motor using multi-dimensional feedback quantization modulation (MDFQM). Unlike the conventional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) which achieves three phase input voltage by a combination of the basic space vectors, the proposed scheme computes optimal switching commands to minimize the filtered measure of quantization error under the constrained switching vector space. Further, the filtered quantization error feedback produces the effect of noise shaping. The computation effort of this method can be reduced via a 2-D projection. Therefore, an implementation on a 16-bit microcontroller is demonstrated in this thesis. Comparisons with SVPWM on steady-state speed ripple, switching number and the surface temperature of MOSFETs are conducted. The results show that MDFQM reduces the switching number and the heat dissipation of MOSFETs without increasing the speed ripple. This will enhance the control efficiency and increase the reliability and life of the power stage circuit.

This paper has implemented three-phase current control in a FPGA-based system. First, we dicuss the mathematical derivation and concept of operation. Then we uses conclusion of the mathematical derivation to design the current control of PMSM. The controller adjusts the output current of inverter to achieve the current command in order to make a comparison of three different current control method. The core of three-phase current control is based on the concept of multi-dimensional feedback quantized modulator (MDFQM). The major part of this paper is MDFQCC and compares with SPWM and MDFQM in the reference. This paper verifies the difference between SPWM, MDFQM and MDFQCC by simulation and experiment.

In this thesis, two cascaded electrodynamic shakers are fed to a six-switch-inverter. To enlarge the region of the output voltages, the high-efficiency multi-dimensional feedback quantized modulation is used. The results of the conventional pulse-width modulation (PWM) are also provided for comparison. All the controls are implemented in FPGA to verify the proposed method. Finally, we verify the difference between PI-PWM and PI-MDFQM by simulation and experiment.
