Abstract This article addresses a question central for this special issue of Multilingua on audiovisual translation (AVT) – of the relationship between the cross-cultural and the intercultural in audiovisual translation. The question underpins fundamental debates in the emergent field of AVT as cross/intercultural mediation, the focus in this volume, with subtitling and dubbing the two main interlingual modes considered in its pages from an interdisciplinary perspective embracing translation and audiovisual translation studies, pragmatics and cross-cultural pragmatics and film studies. The article doubles up as the introduction for the special issue, and provides its rationale and contents.

Abstract:
As a multi ethnic country, Malaysia consists of three major ethnic groups mainly Malays, Chinese, and Indians with unity as its building block. Although education is seen as the best medium for the three major ethnic groups to work together, contemporary research shows that there is lack of intercultural understanding among these three ethnic groups. Therefore, this study focused on a classroom intervention to investigate how Malaysian based English literature can be utilized to promote intercultural understanding among Form Four secondary school students via reading. This qualitative research design study collected data through focus group interviews and journal entry. This research explored intercultural knowledge among Form Four students through the Intercultural Reading Program (IRP). Findings indicate that the IRP intervention improved Form Four students’ level of intercultural knowledge. This research puts forward suggestions to the Ministry of Education such as integrating IRP in its secondary schools’ English Literature curriculum.

Abstract:
The dance practice of the Banat Serbs has been significantly investigated within the ethnochoreology in Serbia. Although a lot of data have been recorded, ethnographic papers about dancing within the wedding ritual of the Banat Serbs are imprecise considering the positioning of the particular dances diachronically and synchronically. Beside that, intensive intercultural processes which have been shaping traditional practice of this multi-ethnic and multicultural region has been neglected. Using the ethnographic literature, and, in a greater measure, relying upon data collected within field research of this region (which I started in 1994), I will present comprehensive ethnography of dancing within the wedding ritual of the Serbs and focus on the identification of the intercultural drifts which shaped traditional cultural practice of the Banat.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the multi-ethnic environment of the University, which reflects both multi-vector global and local processes and specificity of educational practices affecting the relationships in the University eco-environment. The authors consider the processes of adaptation of international exchange students in Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) and the importance of intercultural interaction within these processes. Special attention is given to the harmonization of the University interethnic environment, the formation of friendly barrier-free interaction, which is possible because of the systemic work of educational process participants. The object of the research is the adaptation and intercultural communication in the student environment, with the focus on the specificity of adaptation of international exchange students. The authors draw on the theory of intercultural communication and employ methods of sociological survey and mathematical statistics. The survey, conducted in the fall of 2019 among 120 first-and second-year students from 36 countries with the use of a spontaneous sample type. The respondents were offered a questionnaire aimed at identifying the most urgent problems of adaptation in TUSUR. The survey resulted in a review of the challenges related to the adaptation of foreign students to new conditions in the host community. The results of the research bring to light new sociocultural approaches to the work with foreign students and can be used to optimize the interethnic interaction activities of educational system agents.

During 2014 and 2015 within the EU funded FP7 research project ALTERNATIVE, the Victimology Society of Serbia implemented an action research with the aim to test the applicability of the ?Third way? model in multi-ethnic communities in Serbia, more directly affected by the wars in the former Yugoslavia, and to further up-grade it, both theoretically and practically. Additionally, the action research aimed at coming to the ideas about possible future steps, and developing a tool (practical guide/manual) for applying restorative approaches in intercultural settings in Serbia. The action research consisted of two parts: the participatory seminars titled From the conflict toward the peaceful life in the community, which were implemented in three multi-ethnic communities in Serbia (Medvedja, Prijepolje and Backa Palanka), and developing the Manual on best practices of applying restorative justice approaches in intercultural settings that should serve for raising awareness and education on restorative approaches in conflict transformation. The aim of the article is to present main theoretical departures and methodological approach of the action research, with a particular focus on the seminars, as well as main conclusions and lessons learned in regard applicability of restorative approaches in the multiethnic communities in Serbia.

The focus of the present paper is the design of multi-player role-playing game instances as crucible experiences for the exploration of one’s emotional intelligence. Subsequent sections describe the design of game-based, intercultural crucible experiences and how this design was employed for training with members of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). This work with the USMC is presented as a case study and example of the use of crucible experiences in game-based learning. Crucible experiences are learning opportunities relevant across a number of different domains and disciplines such as education, healthcare, corporate training, diplomacy, crisis management, international business, and intercultural communication. The present paper demonstrates that crucible experiences are catalysts for personal growth and can be incorporated into game-based learning design whose intent is to create defining moments in which learners can explore emotional intelligence and examine who they are under challenging conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract This article focuses on linguistic and cultural representation in AVT as a medium of intercultural literacy. It has two objectives: it puts to the test increasingly accepted assumptions about AVT modalities’ distinctive meaning potential and expressive capacity, with a case study of communicative practices in their representation, via AVT, in subtitles across Romance and Germanic languages. The second objective is to make a start on a neglected question to date, by considering, concurrently, the respective potential for representation of different types of languages, Indo-European in the first instance, in different pair configurations. The study applies to (Romance) French, Italian, Spanish and (Germanic) English and German and uses a cross-cultural pragmatics framework to explore representation, per se and comparatively across the languages represented in the main data, Lonnergan’s 2016 feature film Manchester by the Sea. Data is approached qualitatively from a target text end in the first instance and primarily, in a subset of scenes from across the film. Quantitative analysis is used complementarily for diagnostic purposes or as a complementary source of evidence, with initial focus on types of features identified in earlier studies as a locus of stylised representation in subtitling with evidence of distinctive pragmatic indexing (e.g. pronominal address, greetings, thanking). The study is a pilot study and is exploratory at this stage, but part of a broader endeavour to inform debates about, and build up the picture of, AVT as cross-cultural mediation and, ultimately, promote our understanding of films in translation’s societal impact.

Abstract:
This paper examined the requirements of economy, industry and society for the education of engineers in the field of automotive engineering/service (AES). It introduced a novel engineering education model and investigates the effects at its implementation in a Sino-German educational research project in Tongji University. From three main requirements for engineers in automotive industry, it discussed the orientation and features of AES which focus on application-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and intercultural education. The objective of AES is to educate competent engineers meeting industrial requirements and acquiring a double degree as Bachelor of Science at CDHAW and as Bachelor of Engineering at the German partner universities of applied sciences. To guarantee the quality of bachelor-level engineers on knowledge, know-how, engineering competence and soft skills, this education model integrated a useful operation conception from curriculum design, bilingualism, multi-disciplinary and application-oriented education, education structure, and other resources of teaching and combined them into a system. Out of the education model we derived the effects for students, university staffs, and related companies, and the challenges from the implementation at the Sino-German College of Applied Sciences (Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften, for short CDHAW in German language) of Tongji University. The education model and its positive effects can be successfully used for reference to international engineering education reform and practice.

Purpose This paper aims to focus on a meta-analysis of an applied integrative model of clinical practice at community level in a third-sector organisation. The psychotherapeutic work was exclusively aimed at those who struggled with their abstinence from their substance use. Design/methodology/approach The model adapted to the needs of those who accessed the service, combined culturally sensitive psychoanalytic, systemic and relational frameworks. Findings The analysis reflects how such a multi-dimensional approach may be used to address the experience of self-destructiveness in the context of inferiorisation. This paper also presents some statistical information as well as three case vignettes. Originality/value The analysis reflects how such a multi-dimensional approach may be used to address the experience of self-destructiveness in the context of inferiorisation.

Abstract:
This article attempts to identify measures for teaching and learning a foreign language with focus on the reflective and conscious approach. The objective is to develop appropriate attitudes on the part of learners towards Russia and Russians and thus to prepare them for intercultural communication during lessons of Russian as a second foreign language in school. During these lessons work on student attitudes requires the teacher to use multi-faceted techniques and forms of teaching. Among these, worth mentioning is the use of reflective visualization, comparison of cultures, and conscious emphasis of what is valuable and interesting in others. Techniques, which appeal to the emotions of students, and develop their empathy are used in the context of Russian as a second foreign language in school.

This research addresses the following issue: Traditional strategic planning philosophies and methodologies were not created or developed to reflect or support organizational participation in missio Dei (God’s mission). The following questions provided the focus for the research— Can the concept of a journey: • provide a more biblically and missiologically-aligned, helpful, and effective basis for creating new ways of leading and participating in organizational thinking and planning in and among mission and church organizations?” • address organizations’ desires to flourish in and respond to the complex local and global environments of today and tomorrow? • be effective in multicultural and global contexts? The questions above were addressed through three key areas of research: Metaphor and strategy, multi-cultural impressions of journey, and journey and Scripture. A process of qualitative inquiry drew from literature review, survey and case studies. The literature review included contributions from theology, missiology, business, history, and literary classics. The research was also enriched by the wisdom, cultures, contexts, and experiences of survey and case study participants, organizational leaders from more than forty nations. The findings come together to make a unique contribution to the study of strategy as relates to organizations that seek to be a part of God’s mission. The research primarily, but not exclusively, addresses the needs of Christian organizations, including churches. The study of strategy metaphors and the journey concept could be of benefit to any organization’s leaders. The research is informed by the work and journey of the Wycliffe Global Alliance, but the application potential and implications of the research are broader and deeper than any one group or type of organizations. Exploring the concept of journey led to findings concerning the importance of metaphor, the near-universality of journey as a metaphor, and the many rich facets of this concept when voices from many nations are heard. The case studies and research associated with the literature review also provided insights into how the journey concept can be practically applied across cultures and in ever-changing, and often complex, global and local contexts.

Dans cette thèse, nous nous intéressons aux méthodes de la fusion d'images multi focales. Cette technique consiste à fusionner plusieurs images capturées avec différentes distances focales de la même scène. Cela permet d'obtenir une image de meilleure qualité à partir des deux images sources. Nous proposons une méthode de fusion d'images s'appuyant sur les techniques des pyramides Laplaciennes en utilisant comme règle de sélection les transformées d'ondelettes discretes(DWT: Discrete Wavelet Transform). Nous développons, par la suite, deux méthodes de fusion d'images multi focales basée sur la variabilité locale de chaque pixel. Elle tient en compte les informations dans la région environnante des pixels. La première consiste à utiliser la variabilité locale comme information dans la méthode de Dempster-Shafer. La seconde utilise une métrique basée sur la variabilité locale. En effet, la fusion proposée effectue une pondération de chaque pixel par une exponentielle de sa variabilité locale. Une étude comparative entre les méthodes proposées et celles existantes a été réalisée. Les résultats expérimentaux démontrent que nos méthodes proposées donnent des meilleurs fusions, tant dans la perception visuelle que dans l'analyse quantitative
In this thesis, we are interested in the multi-focus image fusion method. This technique consists of fusing several captured images with different focal lengths of the same scene to obtain an image with better quality than the two source images. We propose an image fusion method based on Laplacian pyramid technique using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) as a selection rule. We then develop two multi-focus image fusion methods based on the local variability of each pixel. It takes into account the information in the surrounding pixel area. The first method is to use local variability as an information in the Dempster-Shafer theory. The second method uses a metric based on local variability. Indeed, the proposed fusion method weighs each pixel by an exponential of its local variability. A comparative study between the proposed methods and the existing methods was carried out. The experimental results show that our proposed methods give better fusions, both in visual perception and in quantitative analysis

The purpose of this study was to determine (a) the attentional focus strategies used by triathletes during the three stages of an Olympic distance triathlon, (b) if level of experience influences the attentional focus strategies used by triathletes, and (c) whether there is a relationship between athletes finishing times and the attentional strategies used in each stage of the race. Triathletes (N = 160) completed the Triathlon Attentional Focus Inventory, which measured association and dissociation during the swim, bike, and run. One-way ANOVAs revealed significant differences between the athletes' level of experience and the attentional strategies used, as well as differences between the athletes overall race time and the attentional strategies used during each stage of the triathlon. Athletes with more experience associated more during the race, whereas athletes with less experience dissociated more throughout the race.

The attainment of attitudes, knowledge, and skills that develop students' intercultural competence so that they may navigate the globally interconnected environment of the 21st century is touted as an important learning objective for higher education (Deardorff & Jones, 2012). Colleges and universities strive to enhance this learning objective by offering a variety of international opportunities; prominent among these is a period of study abroad. However, past research indicates the results of intercultural development through study abroad are mixed. How can education abroad contribute to students' intercultural development? This study focuses on a cohort of students who traverse through three countries (China, Russia, India) in the course of one semester as they live and learn together, alongside faculty and staff from their home institution. To better understand the features of study abroad programs that contribute to students' intercultural development, this study examined the real and perceived development of a group of students (N=21) engaged in a multi-destination study abroad program utilizing a mixed-methods approach. The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) scores of the 21 participants increased by an average of 24.45 points (25%), an increase that exceeded the IDI gains in previous studies. Programmatic conditions that cultivated students' intercultural competence included facilitated contact with natives, academic structure, student self-initiated exploration, and multi-destination. Social and residential features of the program had the least impact on participants' intercultural development. The analysis of the participant narratives is indicative of a web of interconnected features that provided the scaffolding for students to develop empathy, recognize their own biases, challenge stereotypes and ethnocentric beliefs, and ultimately gain knowledge and skills that enabled them to communicate and behave appropriately and effectively in intercultural situations. The results of this study imply that a web of intentionally designed features (e.g., multi-destination, faculty engagement, consistent reflection opportunities, facilitated contact with natives, and IDI guided coaching and mentoring) provide a solid scaffolding that accelerates students' intercultural development

Abstract:
Multi-dimensional functions are characterized by a large number of parameters on which the functional value depends. They are commonly used in engineering problems such as image analysis and system modeling. Multi-dimensional function spaces are very difficult to understand due to their multi-dimensional nature and the presence of a large number of data points in the functional space. A point called the focal point is selected by the user in the vast multi-dimensional parameter space. Rays called â focal raysâ emanate from the focal point in all directions to the boundaries of the functional space. The focal rays contain functional data points. The focal point is mapped onto the center of the visualization with the focal rays arranged radially around it. The degree of detail decreases as we move away from the focal point toward the edges of the visualization in accordance with the focus+context technique. The functional values are mapped onto a color scheme with shades of green representing positive function values, and shades of red representing negative function values. Interactive features such as the ability to change the focal point, highlighting of functional values aid the user in exploring and analyzing the functional space. The algorithm, practical applications of the visualization approach and results of formative evaluation studies are also elaborated in this thesis. The contributions of this thesis are fourfold, namely, providing an overview of the functional space, equal treatment of all dimensions, improved scalability and a smooth blending of details with the overview.

The study explores the subjects of organizational change and management of intercultural teams. The goal of the study is to spread knowledge about how an intercultural team should be managed in order to assure the best possible success of an organizational change initiative. It has long been recognized that organizations constantly need to change in order to stay competitive. At the same time it has also been recognized that organizations today operate on the global arena with operations spread to many different parts of the world. It is thus important to understand how an intercultural team should be managed in order to assure the success of an organizational change initiative.The aim of this study has been to provide information and guidelines that may be used by academia as well as professionals to better understand how to manage an intercultural team that conducts an organizational change. A total of six different guidelines have been presented in this research - each one important in assuring an effective teamwork and a successful organizational change.The study has been conducted using a qualitative research approach and the method used for gathering data has been interviews as well as literature studies.

Abstract:
Induction of classifiers from sets of preclassified training examples is one of the most popular machine learning tasks. This dissertation focuses on the techniques needed in the field of automated text categorization. Here, each document can be labeled with more than one class, sometimes with many classes. Moreover, the classes are hierarchically organized, the mutual relations being typically expressed in terms of a generalization tree. Both aspects (multi-label classification and hierarchically organized classes) have so far received inadequate attention. Existing literature work largely assumes that it is enough to induce a separate binary classifier for each class, and the question of class hierarchy is rarely addressed. This, however, ignores some serious problems. For one thing, induction of thousands of classifiers from hundreds of thousands of examples described by tens of thousands of features (a common case in automated text categorization) incurs prohibitive computational costs---even a single binary classifier in domains of this kind often takes hours, even days, to induce. For another, the circumstance that the classes are hierarchically organized affects the way we view the classification performance of the induced classifiers. The presented work proposes a technique referred to by the acronym "H-kNN-plus." The technique combines support vector machines and nearest neighbor classifiers with the intention to capitalize on the strengths of both. As for performance evaluation, a variety of measures have been used to evaluate hierarchical classifiers, including the standard non-hierarchical criteria that assign the same weight to different types of error. The author proposes a performance measure that overcomes some of their weaknesses. The dissertation begins with a study of (non-hierarchical) multi-label classification. One of the reasons for the poor performance of earlier techniques is the class-imbalance problem---a small number of positive examples being outnumbered by a great many negative examples. Another difficulty is that each of the classes tends to be characterized by a different set of characteristic features. This means that most of the binary classifiers are induced from examples described by predominantly irrelevant features. Addressing these weaknesses by majority-class undersampling and feature selection, the proposed technique significantly improves the overall classification performance. Even more challenging is the issue of hierarchical classification. Here, the dissertation introduces a new induction mechanism, H-kNN-plus, and subjects it to extensive experiments with two real-world datasets. The results indicate its superiority, in these domains, over earlier work in terms of prediction performance as well as computational costs.

Correlated many-particle dynamics in Coulombic systems is one of today‟s grand challenges in physics. In order to address this task, the electronic structure and electron correlations of multiply ionised systems are studied in this thesis, aiming to obtain information on the dynamics of electron emission processes at unprecedented ease and high resolution. State-of-the-art multi-electron correlation spectrometers are used, which were originally developed at Oxford University, UK, and which are now frequently in use at the Ångström laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden.The research is so far based mainly on single-photon excitations using laboratory light sources and synchrotron radiation facilities, and expands now gradually into non-linear and time-resolved studies of atoms, molecules and clusters using high intensive Free Electron Lasers (FEL) in the Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) and X-ray spectral region. This development is highly relevant for even more deep-going applications regarding the ion and excited-state balance in the Earth‟s outer atmosphere and in astrophysical contexts, for photochemistry and biochemistry, for materials science, and to test current atomic and molecular structure theories to their limits.We will focus on the multiple ionization of the buckminsterfullerene (C60) which is of scientific interest as an exceptionally stable and symmetric cluster. Its applications are quite large in nanotechnologies.

The Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila) will study past and present forms of social, political, religious and cultural conviviality, above all in Latin America and the Caribbean while also considering comparisons and interdependencies between this region and other parts of the world. Conviviality, for the purpose of Mecila, is an analytical concept to circumscribe ways of living together in concrete contexts. Therefore, conviviality admits gradations – from more horizontal forms to highly asymmetrical convivial models. By linking studies about interclass, interethnic, intercultural, interreligious and gender relations in Latin America and the Caribbean with international studies about conviviality, Mecila strives to establish an innovative exchange with benefits for both European and Latin American research. The focus on convivial contexts in Latin America and the Caribbean broadens the horizon of conviviality research, which is often limited to the contemporary European context. Tree cover maps derived from satellite and aerial imagery directly support civil and military operations. However, distinguishing tree cover from other vegetative land covers is an analytical challenge. While the commonly used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) can identify vegetative cover, it does not consistently distinguish between tree and low-stature vegetation. The Forest Cover Index (FCI) algorithm was developed to take the multiplicative product of the red and near infrared bands and apply a threshold to separate tree cover from non-tree cover in multispectral imagery (MSI). Previous testing focused on one study site using 2-m resolution commercial MSI from WorldView-2 and 30-m resolution imagery from Landsat-7. New testing in this work used 3-m imagery from PlanetScope and 10-m imagery from Sentinel-2 in imagery in sites across 12 biomes in South and Central America and North Korea. Overall accuracy ranged between 23% and 97% for Sentinel-2 imagery and between 51% and 98% for PlanetScope imagery. Future research will focus on automating the identification of the threshold that separates tree from other land covers, exploring use of the output for machine learning applications, and incorporating ancillary data such as digital surface models and existing tree cover maps.

Despite major challenges, “multi-stakeholder collaborations” - such as co-management - demonstrate the potential for innovative knowledge transfer and strategic adaptation processes within the fisheries sector. The focus here is on Co-management Northern Bohuslän (Samförvaltning Norra Bohuslän), which promotes sustainable local fisheries and blue growth on Sweden’s west coast. The case illustrates how, under appropriate conditions, participatory local efforts can significantlycontribute to sustainability and resilience. The policy brief presents findings on related challenges and opportunities, including recommendations on future directions for the co-management initiative itself, and more general suggestions for co-management as a means to promote sectoral and regional resilience in the Nordic region.

CLARISSA (Child Labour: Action-Research-Innovation in South and South-Eastern Asia) is a large-scale Participatory Action Research programme which aims to identify, evidence, and promote effective multi-stakeholder action to tackle the drivers of the worst forms of child labour in selected supply chains in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar. CLARISSA places a particular focus on participants’ own ‘agency’. In other words, participants’ ability to understand the situation they face, and to develop and take actions in response to them. Most of CLARISSA’s participants are children. This document shares the design and overarching methodology of the CLARISSA programme, which was co-developed with all consortium partners during and since the co-generation phase of the programme (September 2018–June 2020). The immediate audience is the CLARISSA programme implementation teams, plus the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This design document is also a useful reference point for other programmes trying to build large-scale participatory processes. It provides a clear overview of the CLARISSA programmatic approach, the design, and how it is being operationalised in context.

The main focus will be on the vertical transfer of plastic debris from the surface and near-surface waters to the deep sea and on the processes that mediate this transport. The obtained data will help to develop quantitative models that provide information about the level of plastic pollution in the different compartments of the open ocean (surface, water column, seafloor). Furthermore, the effects of plastic debris on marine organisms in the open ocean will be assessed. Abstract:
Cruise AL534/2 is part of a multi-disciplinary research initiative as part of the JPI Oceans project HOTMIC and sought to investigate the origin, transport and fate of plastic debris from estuaries to the oceanic garbage patches. The main focus of the cruise was on the horizontal transfer of plastic debris from major European rivers into shelf regions and on the processes that mediate this transport. Stations were originally chosen to target the outflows of major European rivers along the western Europe coast between Malaga (Spain) and Kiel (Germany), although some modifications were made in response to inclement weather. In total, 16 stations were sampled along the cruise track. The sampling scheme was similar for most stations, and included: 1) a CTD cast to collect water column salinity and temperature profiles, and discrete samples between surface and seafloor, 2) sediment sampling with Van Veen grab and mini-multi corer (mini-MUC), 3) suspended particle and plankton sampling using a towed Bongo net and vertical WP3 net, and 4) surface neusten sampling using a catamaran trawl. At a subset of stations with deep water, suspended particles were collected using in situ pumps deployed on a cable. During transit between stations, surface water samples were collected from the ship’s underway seawater supply, and during calm weather, floating litter was counted by visual survey teams. The samples and data collected on cruise AL534/2 will be used to determine the: (1) abundance of plastic debris in surface waters, as well as the composition of polymer types, originating in major European estuaries and transported through coastal waters, (2) abundance and composition of microplastics (MP) in the water column at different depths from the sea surface to the seafloor including the sediment, (3) abundance and composition of plastic debris in pelagic and benthic organisms (invertebrates), (4) abundance and identity of biofoulers (bacteria, protozoans and metazoans) on the surface of plastic debris from different water depths, (5) identification of chemical compounds (“additives”) in the plastic debris and in water samples.

Background: Major depressive disorder is a common mental disorder. Many pressing questions regarding depression treatment and outcomes exist, and new, efficient research approaches are necessary to address them. The primary objective of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility and value of capturing the harmonized depression outcome measures in the clinical workflow and submitting these data to different registries. Secondary objectives include demonstrating the feasibility of using these data for patient-centered outcomes research and developing a toolkit to support registries interested in sharing data with external researchers. Methods: The harmonized outcome measures for depression were developed through a multi-stakeholder, consensus-based process supported by AHRQ. For this implementation effort, the PRIME Registry, sponsored by the American Board of Family Medicine, and PsychPRO, sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association, each recruited 10 pilot sites from existing registry sites, added the harmonized measures to the registry platform, and submitted the project for institutional review board review Results: The process of preparing each registry to calculate the harmonized measures produced three major findings. First, some clarifications were necessary to make the harmonized definitions operational. Second, some data necessary for the measures are not routinely captured in structured form (e.g., PHQ-9 item 9, adverse events, suicide ideation and behavior, and mortality data). Finally, capture of the PHQ-9 requires operational and technical modifications. The next phase of this project will focus collection of the baseline and follow-up PHQ-9s, as well as other supporting clinical documentation. In parallel to the data collection process, the project team will examine the feasibility of using natural language processing to extract information on PHQ-9 scores, adverse events, and suicidal behaviors from unstructured data. Conclusion: This pilot project represents the first practical implementation of the harmonized outcome measures for depression. Initial results indicate that it is feasible to calculate the measures within the two patient registries, although some challenges were encountered related to the harmonized definition specifications, the availability of the necessary data, and the clinical workflow for collecting the PHQ-9. The ongoing data collection period, combined with an evaluation of the utility of natural language processing for these measures, will produce more information about the practical challenges, value, and burden of using the harmonized measures in the primary care and mental health setting. These findings will be useful to inform future implementations of the harmonized depression outcome measures.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.
