In Seriousness in Kierkegaard’s work, “work” means two things: First work, work in its strict sense, the literary product (concerning seriousness) of K.; and Second work, the seriousness of K., which, without excluding First work, constitutes K.’s whole life. Life-imbedded work and life in-his-work are indivisible. It is a characteristic of this author for whom admiration cannot exist without imitation of that which is admired (and that, without the loss of his own primitivity), nor can doctrine exist without the action of the works, or concept without pathos, and that, both in communicating (to others) as in life self. Speaking of the seriousness of K. requires precisely paying attention, even if it is only minimal, to his personal biography, as well as to what is commonly understood as seriousness; and, most importantly, to how it has been understood by authors before and after K. in the history of philosophy. I also highlight and value those who have studied all or part of what was written by K., from the angle of his vision of seriousness. In a Second part it will be analyzed what K. understands by seriousness (and where seriousness in K. is studied, as opposed to the seriousness of K.), on the basis of the alleged pre-understanding of what seriousness is (although, for us, already enriched by our knowledge of its history, told in the first part). Undoubtedly, it is the same starting point of K. himself, who, only in chapter IV of The Concept of Anxiety, decides to explain, and that by means of a pseudonym, what is understood by seriousness. But it is precisely there where the danger (always lurking, in my opinion) of confusing what is said by K. for what is said by any of his pseudonyms, which is the source of many misunderstandings and alleged contradictions attributed to K. For this reason, it has been my task to corroborate the statements made in the Papirer by each of the pseudonyms (especially those relating to seriousness), with those of K. Here lies the importance of the term transposition in K., by means of which I emphasize that what is said in a stage in the way of life (of which there is now also a pre-understanding), being the same thing, changes its meaning when it is transposed to another. For the same reason, I have also insisted on speaking about the different existential categories more kindred to seriousness (primitivity, repetition, interiority…), and also about seriousness itself, in describing those categories according to their stage (aesthetic, ethic or religious) in every case. It will be thus needed to finally determine an alleged aesthetic seriousness (?), an ethic seriousness and a religious seriousness (being this last one the true one for K.), with the help of the above mentioned existential categories, also differentiated by stages, trying always to avoid confusion between them. According to K., hegelian dialectics and all pantheisms invariably lead to such a confusion of stages. Since the stages are “life”, and not pure irreal speculation, it will be explained why the initial number of stages should be expanded, and bridges established among them, without renouncing to the qualitative difference between them and to the liberty of the qualitative gap. There will be, consequently, a distinction without separation between the stages; thus, no lack of common elements will be found, even if transposed from one stage to the other, either ethic (those common to the first and second ethic), or religious (those common to religiosity A and religiosity B, the latter being the absolutely paradoxical one: Christian religiosity). First ethic and A religiosity exposed, however, to the permanent temptation of fake seriousness, which consists in their relying exclusively on themselves, and seen in their full contradictory comedy from the superior stage. Irony and humor appear not only as intermediate stages, but survive, as happens with anxiety, in a servile or dominated form; that is, at the service of faith, in the superior stage of religious seriousness. This way, they act as a warrant of faith, as a touchstone to distinguish real seriousness from the fake kind. Seriousness is relation (second relation). It implies endeavor, finite-infinite tension (seriousness in the subject), which tends to concur circularly with the (serious) object and which, being the extreme of seriousness, can be no one else but the subject himself, the ego (the ethic ego and the ethic-religious ego). Personality, the quality of being a person (not merely a man), is seriousness (philosophy in K. is anthropology, not of the natural or spontaneous man, but of the man still to be made), specifically religious seriousness as a prelude of eternity. In my reference to the Other (not to the others, which, for K., would be always occasional), I become truly (that is, religiously) serious. It is of decisive help to this purpose the seriousness of the thought of the certainty of death, but without knowing the when, and, for the same reason, the serious conception of the temporal Instant in which everything is decided. Being a judge myself, I have insisted especially on the fact that judgment of salvation or condemnation is, for K., the only serious thing, understood under the light of God’s seriousness: rigor and mercy. This is an individual, private judgment, from person to Person: not (ethical) judgment, in appliance of a general law and equal to everyone, but a (religious) judgment before God. Hence, without losing hope in the forgiveness of sins, the fear and the trembling. Is K. a theologian or a philosopher? K. is, foremost, simply a religious writer who, beyond philosophy, due to his humility (simplicity and humility are seriousness), does not want to be in any case the object of God’s laughter.
