Abstract:
“Oh, it is indeed a burning shame that there would be one law for men and another law for women. I think that there should be no law for anybody” (Beckson, I Can Resist 100). So said Oscar Wilde to a journalist interviewing him in January 1895. And for the first five years of the 1890s, it looked as though the British literary and publishing worlds, at least, were increasingly in accord with this Wildean perspective. Texts challenging the double standard of heterosexual conduct proliferated, even as bold articulations of same-sex desire appeared. At the same time, laws of all sorts that governed the production and consumption of literature seemed to be struck down daily. The three-volume novel declined and, with it, the circulating libraries' law of conforming to Mudie's definition of the reading public's tastes. New Women and other new realists gleefully violated the laws that required fictional narratives to end with marriage or, indeed, to provide some version of closure. In the sphere of periodical publishing, the law demanding that the visual arts be subordinate to words vanished in April 1894 with the first issue of the Yellow Book. The Bodley Head's new quarterly proudly stated that “The pictures will in no case serve as illustrations to the letter-press, but each will stand by itself as an independent contribution” (Stetz and Lasner 8).

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to establish normal reference echocardiographic values for three Hungarian dog breeds, and to determine the potential dependence of intracardiac parameters on body weight, age and gender. M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography were performed on 95 clinically healthy dogs including 45 Hungarian Vizslas, 28 Mudis and 22 Hungarian Greyhounds. Linear intracardiac measurements included interventricular septal thickness (IVS), left ventricular internal diameter (LVID), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPW) both in systole and diastole, as well as left atrial internal diameter (LAD), and aortic diameter (AOD) in early diastole. Fractional shortening (FS), end-diastolic and end-systolic left ventricular volumes (EDV and ESV), as well as LAD:AOD ratio were calculated from the linear parameters. Mean, range and standard deviation of measurements were calculated for each breed. Body weight positively correlated in all three breeds with all left ventricular dimensions, such as IVSd, IVSs, LVIDd, LVIDDs, LVPWdand LVPWsparameters. LA values showed positive correlations to body weight in all three breeds. AOD and LA demonstrated a positive correlation with body weight in Hungarian Vizslas and Mudis, whilst the LAD:AOD ratio was related to body weight only in Mudis. Gender did not correlate with any of the measured echocardiographic parameters in any breeds. In Mudis, a positive correlation was found between the LAD:AOD ratio and age, as well as between the LAD:AOD ratio and E point to septal separation (EPSS).

Abstract:
Abstract A mobile calibration system for a multidirectional spectroradiometer (MUDIS) to transfer the absolute radiometric calibration from the laboratory to the location of the outdoor-measurement (field calibrator) has been developed. The main part of the calibration system comprises an aluminium sphere with a diameter of 40 cm, mounting adapters and a ventilation system. The MUDIS device is capable of measuring spectral radiance from 320 to 600 nm in 113 different directions simultaneously within 1 s. When repeating radiance measurements inside the mobile field sphere, the relative standard deviation (RSD) for wavelengths between 320 and 600 nm is less than 1.8% (320 nm) for all directions with minimum RSD of 0.6% at 382 nm. The reproducibility depends not only on the wavelength but also on the individual fibre position on the hemispherical input optics, with maximum of 4.5% RSD, but most directions show a lower deviation. On average, the RSD for the channels is less than 0.9%. The calibrator enables measurements of the spectral radiance with less uncertainty than with the previous indirect calibration method, which uses measurements of a scanning reference array spectroradiometer.

Knight-Mudie, Karen. "Moonlighting in Moffatt: restructuring art as personal experience." Thesis, 1999. https://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/38412/1/38412-knight-mudie-1999-thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
This research probes the complex interplay between art and personal experience. The recent burgeoning of multiculturalism and an awareness of global economy have contributed to rapidly increasing visual communication which now challenges the primacy of verbal signs thus leading to the possibility that established and confirmed notions of both verbal signs and visual signs might require re-thinking. It is also possible that, in a world in which mass communication is used by the few to foster a sense of vicarious experience in the many, the notion of experience as the compulsion to think otherwise than one has been thinking might also need examination from a singular point of view. Such a point of view must be personal; hence this research emanates from my own experience of making artworks. However, the context in which artworks are made can be seen to influence the way in which one decides either to foreground or background certain data. Inevitably one's roles of artist, art educator and community member contribute to ways in which background experiences and knowledge are recognized as continuing forces that agitate the tools in one's bead leading to new ways of thinking about one's artwork and the impacts such artwork might have on other members of the community. In adopting a personal point of view, this research operates within the realm of visual and narrative autobiography although, because artworks are created to be seen by others, philosophical speculation is necessary to prepare the ground for heuristic inquiry to take place on behalf of others. In this sense, this research offers a synthesis whereby an overview of our Australian heritage, an investigation of ideas emanating from semiotics, meaning, politics and cognitive psychology uncover the ground upon which I make a body of artworks. While such a synthesis presents an appropriate setting for investigating ways in which art might be seen as a social construct or as a means of artistic expression from a global perspective, the significance of art as personal experience can only be exposed by the artist probing beneath the surface of communal conventions. In examining my own processes of making artworks I unpack various background associations which influence the way in which I respond to visual and verbal data gathered from field trips to the Mt Moffatt National Park, a remote area of western Queensland. During these field trips such data were compiled using photographic means and a visual diary, both of which serve as reference material for this research in which changes to my thinking about art and modifications to techniques used for creating artworks, can be noted. Of particular significance is the way in which narrative suggests connections between people, places and myself as artist while also functioning to link visual and verbal data. Such changes to my thinking and processes of making art objects influence the direction the work takes as a visual instrument in the form of an exhibition which might be used by others as a means of facilitating their sensory responses to artworks. In this way the continuum of making, interpreting, translating and re-making images using the familiar genre of narrative as a conduit for exploring the less familiar artworks displayed in a public gallery is investigated. Such investigation exposes forces which play dominant roles in challenging me to probe the internal nature of experience leading to changes in my perception whilst also highlighting ways in which viewers make connections between an artwork and themselves. On the one hand, from a personal perspective, I am aware of multiple implications for my art practice and for art education. On the other hand, viewer responses indicate ways in which can can be personally experienced by someone external to the artist.

Abstract:
The introduction lays out the theoretical groundwork for the book, centred around affect theory, surface reading, and empathy. Through close readings of a debate about Mudie’s library, and the work of Matthew Arnold and Mark Pattison, the chapter historicizes the work of close reading as part of a discipline-shaping discourse that culminates in Victorian literary scholarship. Through this history, this chapter engages with Rita Felski’s “reparative critique” to suggest Associationism and affect as an alternative to the tools of the Victorian academy. Associationism provides a mode of “surface reading” as called for by Stephen Best and Sharon Marcus, in that it attends to emotion and affect rather than deep reading. This assertion – established through a reading of Victorian ethicist James Martineau – sets up the argument for the rest of the book: that Victorians understood surface reading as an intuitive, populist mode of reading to cultivate empathy.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the modern organization of Africa as a continent. It uses Yves Mudimbe's representation of colonial organizations. The chapter argues that a collision of modern material individualism with the African perspective of 'the wealth in people,' appears as 'witchcraft' where an African picks up weapons to kill another in the name of autochthon versus a stranger. The answer to the impasse between Western capitalism and African integration is in delving in both in a manner that critiques and affirms to provoke further thoughts towards a lasting solution.
