Abstract:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Response Protocol Toolbox provides a list of recommendations on actions that may be taken to minimize the potential threats to public health following a contamination threat. This protocol comprises three steps: (1) detection of contaminant presence, (2) source identification and (3) consequence management. This paper intends to explore consequence management under source uncertainty, applying Minimize Maximum Regret (MMR) and Minimize Total Regret (MTR) approaches. An ant colony optimization algorithm is coupled with the EPANET network solver for structuring the MMR and MTR models to present a robust method for consequence management by selecting the best combination of hydrants and valves for isolation and contamination flushing out of the system. The proposed models are applied to network number 3 of EPANET to present its effectiveness and capabilities in developing effective consequence management strategies.

Abstract:
SUMMARYThe resource conservation technologies (RCTs), being advocated for countering the threat to the sustainability of wheat–rice cropping system (RWCS) in the north–west (NW) Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) of India, have been evaluated mostly for the individual crops, without depicting the impact of these technologies on the succeeding or preceding crop. A study was thus conducted during 2012–2014 in NW India to assess the land and irrigation water productivity (WPI) of RWCS under different establishment and conservation tillage techniques in a sandy-loam soil (coarse loamy, calcareous, mixed, hyperthermic Typic Ustochrept). The treatments included zero (ZTW) and conventional (CTW) tillage in wheat as main plot, establishment methods (direct seeded (DSR) and mechanically transplanted rice (MTR)) as sub-plot and tillage in rice viz. puddle (PR), dry (CTR) and zero (ZTR) tillage as sub–sub plot treatments, replicated thrice in split–split plot design. The land productivity of RWCS was significantly lower in ZTW plots than in CTW plots. The residual effect of tillage in wheat on rice productivity was distinct during the second year of study, when the CTW plots recorded significantly higher (17.5%) rice yield than the ZTW plots. The productivity of the cropping system with DSR was statistically similar to that with MTR. The WPI of RWCS increased in the order ZTW–DSR–ZTR25 < CTW–DSR–ZTR < ZTW–MTR–CTR < ZTW–DSR–PR < CTW–DSR–PR < ZTW–MTR–PR26 < CTW–MTR–PR.

Abstract:
Background:Degeneration of central nervous system normal appearing white matter (NAWM) underlies disability and progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Axon loss typifies NAWM degeneration. Objective:The objective of this paper is to assess correlation between cortical lesion load and magnetisation transfer ratio (MTR) of the NAWM in MS. This was in order to test the hypothesis that cortical lesions cause NAWM degeneration. Methods:Nineteen patients with MS underwent 7 Tesla magnetisation-prepared-rapid-acquisition-gradient-echo (MPRAGE), and magnetisation transfer ratio (MTR) brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cortical lesions were identified using MPRAGE and MTR images of cortical ribbons. White matter lesions (WMLs) were segmented using MPRAGE images. WML maps were subtracted from white matter volumes to produce NAWM masks. Pearson correlation was calculated for NAWM MTR vs cortical lesion load, and WML volumes. Results:Cortical lesion volumes and counts all had significant correlation with NAWM mean MTR. The strongest correlation was with cortical lesion volumes obtained using MTR images ( r = −0.6874, p = 0.0006). WML volume had no significant correlation with NAWM mean MTR ( r = −0.08706, p = 0.3615).Conclusion:Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that cortical lesions cause NAWM degeneration. This implicates cortical lesions in the pathogenesis of NAWM axon loss, which underpins long-term disability and progression in MS.

Abstract:
The gene product of the mtr locus of Neurospora crassa is required for the transport of neutral aliphatic and aromatic amino acids via the N system. We have previously cloned three cosmids containing Neurospora DNA that complement the mtr-6(r) mutant allele. The cloned DNAs were tightly linked to restriction fragment length polymorphisms that flank the mtr locus. A 2.9-kbp fragment from one cosmid was subcloned and found to complement the mtr-6(r) allele. Here we report the sequence of the fragment that hybridized to a poly(A)+ mRNA transcript of about 2300 nucleotides. We have identified an 845-bp open reading frame (ORF) having a 59-bp intron as the potential mtr ORF. S1 nuclease analysis of the transcript confirmed the transcript size and the presence of the intron. A second open reading frame was found upstream in the same reading frame as the mtr ORF and appears to be present in the mRNA transcript. The mtr ORF is predicted to encode a 261 amino acid polypeptide with a molecular mass of 28 613 Da. The proposed polypeptide exhibits six potential α-helical transmembrane domains with an average length of 23 amino acids, does not have a signal sequence, and contains amino acid sequence homologous to an RNA binding motif.Key words: sequence, membranes, ribonucleoprotein.

Abstract:
Introduction The purpose of this study was to compare the occurrence of microcracks in teeth prepared with different retreatment systems using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Methods Forty-two freshly extracted mandibular premolar teeth were used. The root canals were instrumented with stainless steel K-files to an apical size of 35/.02 using the balanced-force technique and were obturated using the passive compaction technique. The specimens were divided into 3 experimental groups according to retreatment system used (n = 14): ProTaper Universal retreatment (PTUR), Mtwo retreatment (MTR), or D-RaCe retreatment (D-RC) systems. Each specimen was scanned using a high-resolution micro-CT system before instrumentation, after obturation, and after the removal of the filling material. The images were evaluated, and the presence of microcracks was recorded. Results The PTUR system demonstrated the highest percentage, while MTR and D-RC retreatment systems resulted in similar numbers of microcracks. Conclusions Clinicians should be aware that all retreatment systems may cause microcracks.

Abstract:
Background Magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) permits the quantitative estimation of cervical cord tissue damage in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Objective To determine whether a single time-point MTR scan of the cervical cord is associated with short-term disease evolution in patients with relapsing-remitting (RR) MS. Methods Using a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system with a tailored cervical cord phased array coil, fast short-tau inversion recovery (fast-STIR) and MTR scans were obtained from 14 untreated patients with RRMS at baseline. Cervical cord MTR histograms were derived. Over the 18- month follow-up period, relapse rate was measured and disability assessed by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score. Results Average cervical cord MTR was correlated with relapse rate ( r= -0.56, P = 0.037). A moderate correlation ( r values ranging from -0.33 to -0.36) between baseline cervical cord MTR metrics and EDSS changes over 18 months was also noted, albeit statistical significance was not reached ( P = 0.26 and 0.21, respectively) perhaps because of the relatively small sample size. Conclusions This study suggests that a ‘snapshot’ MT MRI assessment of the cervical cord may detect cervical cord tissue changes associated with short-term disease evolution in RRMS.

Abstract:
When an offshore or port breakwater is constructed on a coast, beach erosion often occurs on nearby beaches of the breakwater due to the wave diffraction effect of the breakwater associated with the formation of a wave-shelter zone, because longshore sand transport is triggered from outside to inside the wave-shelter zone. Similarly, when unidirectional longshore sand transport is blocked by a breakwater, beach erosion will occur downcoast. In these cases, longshore sand movement is the key factor. Another aspect is arisen from the management system of the land near a coast subject to such longshore sand movement. In Japan, the management of coastal land is under the jurisdiction of several agencies. When sand is transported alongshore across 2 management areas, the sand right belongs to the agency administrating the area to which the sand is deposited, and the agency administrating the area from which the sand originated has no right. Thus, this leads to uncoordinated solution to erosion problems, because longshore sand can freely move across the boundaries of coastal management areas. In this study, these issues were studied through real examples. Even though the accuracy of the predictive model of beach changes is increased, implementing fundamental changes of the coastal condition is difficult when this issue is unsolved as it is.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a heuristic approach named A* algorithm to find shortest route for Inter-Terminal Transport Monorail System (ITT system) that are being applied in Busan Port (Korea). In every transport system, vehicle routing and task assignment are significant problems that affects strongly the overall system’s efficiency, especially the travel cost and the time taking. The proposed ITT system will use shuttles to carry containers along a monorail that links the internal terminals. A* algorithm is used to guide the shuttles in a shortest way automatically from a known loading position to a designated unloading one. In the first part of the paper, we will describe briefly about the ITT system that being considered in Korea. Next, we will explain why and how we implement A* algorithm in dispatching. Finally, we will give some comparisons between performances of new ITT system and traditional transport system through simulation in MATLAB.

Abstract:
The metro system in Stockholm consists of three lines, covering 100 stations with 108 km of track. Boarding passengers take 1.1 million journeys every day. Depending on the time of day, the number of cars varies, which can cause drivers to inadvertently stop trains with one car still in the tunnel or off the platform. To prevent this, there is a need for a sensor-based stand-alone system to alert drivers that the whole train, including all cars, is at the platform. First, the thesis describes the existing technologies and methods for train positioning. Two types of technology are compared for this application, optical and inductive. The optical system is more expensive and more sensitive to a messy environment but is more straightforward. The inductive sensor is cheap and does not need any maintenance. The challenge is the 50 mm sensing range. Both types of sensors were tested in a system, in laboratory environment and at Hjulsta trainstation. Different approaches were tested and evaluated. The two configurations that are compared in the end are a laser sensor system that indicates to the driver when the laser beam is blocked. The second configuration uses two inductive sensors that count the axles in two different locations along the track. Schematics for the final PCB and code for the logic are also presented.

Thesis, KTH, Skolan för industriell teknik och management (ITM), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-264090.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of digitization is transforming industries worldwide by introducing new valueproducing opportunities. In the railway industry, market liberalization has resulted in increased competition. To remain profitable in this new market environment, rail operators need to transform and acquire new digital capabilities and tools. By digitizing information-intensive processes with an information system, railway companies can reduce loss of operation time and reduce total maintenance costs. At the same time, the limited research exploring information systems in maintenance management has made it challenging for companies wanting to digitize. Significant attention has been devoted to the separate topics, however research overlapping the two areas of study has been inadequate. The thesis aims to contribute with knowledge to bridge this gap in literature by investigating the opportunities a maintenance organization potentially can capture with an information system and the success factors needed to succeed. By conducting the thesis in collaboration with the Swedish railway maintenance company MTR Tech AB the potential uses of an information system have been identified and assessed. Findings indicate that there are three main business opportunities to obtain from an information system: support of the troubleshooting process, better planning of reactive maintenance and enabling the performance of condition-based maintenance. At the same time, the profitability of an information system was found to be directly linked to its degree of utilization. Our findings have therefore allowed us to conclude that the business opportunity to pursue is the one that is most likely to be carried out fully and successfully in the prevailing circumstances. Lastly, the findings conclude that the success factors needed to capture the desired business opportunities are a dedicated project group, clear communication and information sharing, as well as adequate personnel.

Abstract:
Distributed storage systems provide fast and reliable access to data by intro- ducing redundancy for stored les. The most common approach of adding re- dundant information is by repetition and erasure codes. Two main processes in a distributed storage system are reconstruction of original le and regenerat- ing a new node. These two processes require bandwidth, which are termed as reconstruction-bandwidth and repair-bandwidth. The current literature treat- s these two processes separately. That is, there are methods to reduce the reconstructing bandwidth without considering the repair-bandwidth, and also there are methods to reduce the repair-bandwidth. We study these two pro- cesses together and try to jointly minimize the reconstruction-bandwidth and repair-bandwidth. We observe a method that has the minimum reconstruction- bandwidth might have large amount of repair-bandwidth and vice versa. We propose codes which minimizes the sum of the repair-bandwidth and reconstruction- bandwidth. The main contribution of this thesis is nding an value of repair locality r (number of nodes connected during node repair) and devising two coding meth- ods in which total bandwidth approximates to be half reduced compared with MSR and MBR when k ! 1 under the condition that 1 6 r 6 k.

Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) is one of the techniques used tiimprove the system performance. In this thesis, we improve and evaluate the system performance of MIMO deploying MRT technique at the transmitter and MRCtechnique at the receiver with an assuming that the system can obtain perfect CSI.We derived expressions for outage probability and symbol error rate and simulationgraphs for SISO, SIMO, MISO, and MIMO in terms of outage probability. Our results show that the MIMO system performance is better than other configurations. We also observed that SISO have the least performance where SIMO and MISOhave same performance. The performance also increases as the number of antennasincrease in the system and it is suggested to use MIMO when performance is givehigh priority than cost.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The operation of a mass rapid transit (MRT) should consider the balance between total system costs and service level. For a MRT system, the main service is to provide passengers with the cost-affordable mobility, under the regulation of MRT service indicators; the government sets the minimum standards to ensure a certain level of MTR services. Thereby, how to establish an optimal operating timetable is one of the important operational issues for a MRT system. In the past research concerning MRT operations, most researches focused on the issues of train delay, energy saving, route design or overall system operating regards, and placed less focus on the optimal timetable problem. In the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit (KMRT) system, the total ridership has not reached a predicted level, but the service provided in terms of the Train Service Plan (TSP) is more than needed. Therefore, a time-dependent time table for the KMRT system is crucial to minimize total system cost while maintaining the certain level of train service. In this research, we aim to develop a time-dependent timetable model which is able to dynamically adjust train schedule depending on the passenger spatio-temporal distribution demands during daily operation. The developed model will be solved by minimizing both the operating cost and passenger waiting cost. Finally, numerical case study and sensitivity analysis will be conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the developed models and solution algorithms.

In ASME 2016 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2016-65908.

Abstract:
Bringing a high tech product to the market as soon as possible has never been so critical. Quality control of critical parts manufactured in large quantities is a problem to solve in many industries ranging from aerospace to automotive. If there are precision parts with very tight dimensional tolerances in the assembly, each and every dimension of every part must be measured. Otherwise parts with dimensions out of tolerances will create more trouble in the later steps of the assembly. Measuring the dimensions of precision parts using high precision coordinate measurement machines (CMM) is time consuming and can be quite cumbersome. Also the initial investment to be made in order to acquire a precise CMM is quite expensive. An alternative solution to this quality assurance (QA) problem is utilizing the vibrational characteristics of the manufactured part. A quality acceptance criterion using those characteristics of the part can be developed. Natural frequencies and mode shapes of the part are the key parameters to be measured when deciding the part to fail or pass. For this purpose, a test setup with the ability of automated modal testing is required. In this study, such a system is designed and developed named as the modal test robot (MTR). The MTR consists of an automated modal test hammer to excite the modes of test part, a mechanism to support the hitting hammer and a heavy granite table to secure the part. By using finite element (FE) analysis, the natural frequency range for the acceptable test part is determined. High fidelity FE analysis models are utilized to ensure good agreement between analysis and test results. Three different parts called the spool; the four arm star and the blade are examined as case studies. In case studies, relationship between part dimension and the natural frequency of the part is calculated by utilizing parametric FE model for each part. Using this relationship, fail or pass criterion is developed according to a specific natural frequency of the part. Natural frequencies of the part are measured on the MTR. Since modal test is carried out by using the MTR, repeatability and coherence of the test results are increased. By this procedure, a technician can make a quick decision whether the measured part passes of fails by just checking the natural frequency. Utilizing the vibrational characteristics as a fail or pass criterion for parts instead of a dimensional measurements is a fast and cheap method that can be employed in QA processes. By implementing this methodology, QA cycle times for manufactured parts reduces 90% and higher number of parts can be controlled in a limited inspection time.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional seismic soil-structure interaction (SSI) analysis of nuclear power plants (NPP) is often performed in frequency domain using the computer program SASSI [1]. This enables the analyst to properly a) address the effects of wave radiation in an unbounded soil media, b) incorporate strain-compatible soil shear modulus and damping properties and c) specify input motion in the free field using de-convolution method and/or spatially variable ground motions. For large, complex structural systems with multi-million degrees of freedom (DOF) and large foundation impedance matrices associated with deeply embedded foundations, the conventional sub-structuring analysis approach employed in SASSI often results in a coefficient matrix that is too large to solve with currently available computer resources. To address this problem, the method of component mode synthesis (CMS) is employed in the SSI analysis. This involves partitioning the structure into several interconnected components, calculating the reduced-order model of each component, and then assembling the reduced-order component models into a global model of the total SSI system. This technique has been implemented in MTR/SASSI® [2] utilizing the super-element capability. After the component boundary and foundation motions of the synthesized SSI model are determined, these motions are substituted back into the structural component model to compute the response of the structure. This paper presents the formulation of component mode models, and their implementation into the global SSI model. To check out this procedure, an example of seismic SSI analysis of a simplified NPP model on flexible basemat subject to horizontal and vertical excitations is considered. The total SSI system is first analyzed with SASSI using the conventional approach to compute the baseline (target) solution. The structure is then partitioned from the basemat and analyzed separately using the ANSYS® [3] program to compute the component mode properties that are used to form the boundary super-elements. These super-elements are input into the foundation/soil model and analyzed by MTR/SASSI® to calculate the basemat response. The response of the flexible basemat is checked against the baseline solution. In the final step, the foundation basemat response that includes the SSI effects is imposed onto the structural component to calculate the response of the structure. Comparison of the responses show excellent agreement between the baseline solution and those obtained using CMS method.
