Abstract:
Since the time of the Greek philosopher Plato, Western intellectuals have relied on logos or \"the word\" to make philosophical propositions about the world humans find themselves in. Logos or \"the word\" has generally been privileged over mythos or pathos, denoting emotion and feeling. This privileging has sometimes been challenged by intellectuals within the Western tradition. D. H. Lawrence was the most vocal and passionate writer to do so in modern times. This text traces the development of rationalism in the Western tradition and Lawrence\'s resistance to it. It also examines modern theoretical developments and notes their convergence with Lawrence\'s ideas. It concludes by claiming that the postmodern intellectual climate in the West tends towards a critique of rationalism, much like Lawrence.

Abstract:
The aim of this PhD work was to develop and characterize all physicochemical aspects of this new CRT for CTZ and AKS using OMS until the introduction onto the market. The first part comprehends the characterization of different OMS synthesized and commercially available; the study of different incorporation techniques based on hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of API; the characterization of the new impregnated OMS. Consequently, the work is oriented on the interaction details of API on silica surfaces. A closer look is given to the big questions of OMS-drug phenomena: mobility, solubility, bioavailability, etc. Therefore, all the scCO2 incorporation parameters have been studied, highlighting the differences between OMS and the spatial assembly of drug inside the mesoporous channels. Thus, the patented CRT has been developed for AKS describing all the main aspect of the innovative semisolid formulation. In-vitro and ex-vivo release test has been produced and characterized, revealing the functionality of the OMS reservoir effect. Finally, the same DDS have been developed for CTZ. Both the DDS have been compared with commercially available creams.

Abstract:
The skin is the largest area of the body that interfaces with bacteria and "problems" from the environment and is the first line of defence for the body. There are, of course, immune system functions that take place within the skin area and it would be nourished only by the very small arteries (capillaries). So the blood supply at the surface of the skin is not as great as it is further inside the body. When you can apply something on the skin, which nourishes the immune system cells, such as MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) and urea you are doing wonders in improving the health of the skin. The use of urea in dermatological therapy and cosmetics has become more and more important in recent years. However, urea is unstable in formulations, decomposing into carbon dioxide and ammonia. Products containing urea can be stabilised by including MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) in the formulation (Herschler, 1981:l). The aim of this study was to determine the stabilising effect of MSM on urea in cosmetic products. Cosmetic products that were formulated with MSM and urea as actives, comprised of a moisturising lotion, massage cream, foot and heel balm, hair gel, hair spray and lip ice. The formulations were subjected to stability studies for three months under ICH conditions. The formulated products were stored at 5ºC, 25ºC/60%RH and 4OºC/75%RH. The strength of MSM and urea in each formulation was 5% m/m , except for the hair spray and lip ice where the concentrations were 10% m/m and 2.5% m/m respectively. HPLC analysis was used to determine the urea concentrations in all the formulated products, as well as the concentration released during membrane release studies. GC analysis was used to determine the MSM concentrations in the products. Other stability tests included appearance, spreadability, pH, relative density, penetration, viscosity, preservative content and preservative efficacy. Chapter 1 gives a literature overview of the uses and importance of cosmetics. Chapter 2 is a literature overview of the skin and the properties and uses of urea and MSM. Chapter 3 deals with the formulation of urea and MSM products and the chemicals that have been used. Chapter 4 described the methods used for accelerated stability testing. Chapter 5-10 finally deals with the results obtained and the conclusions that were made. The test results showed the following: There was a prominent change in the pH of all the formulated products; this can be due to decomposition of urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia (Beiersdorf, 2003: 1). Higher temperature and moisture increase this decomposition and cause the pH to increase to values as high as 11 (Anon, 2003:20). The viscosity, spreadability, penetration, relative density and appearance of the products remained more or less the same over three months, except for the hair spray where crystals formed in the product that was stored at 5ºC for 1 month due to the menthol in the formulation. The urea and MSM content decreased with time. The lip ice formulation showed concentrations as low as 30% due to poor solubility of the urea and MSM crystals in the waxes of the lip ice formulation. HPLC analysis of the preservatives confirmed their stability in the formulated products. The preservative efficacy results proved that the products were sufficiently protected from microbial contamination. The release study indicated that urea is released at a steady rate from the preparations tested. Urea was released from the moisturising lotion after 120 minutes. In general, the release is influenced by the viscosity of the medium and should be faster from the gel than from the creams or lotion (Shah et al., 199155). In conclusion it can be said that urea and MSM were successfully formulated into the six cosmetic products except for the lip ice, which showed low, unstable concentrations of the actives due to poor solubility of the actives in the waxes of the lip ice formulation. By comparing the results of Claasen, (2003:63) and the results obtained in this study for the hair gel and foot and heel balm, it looks as if MSM had a stabilising effect on urea, by lowering the decrease of urea concentrations over time.

Abstract:
In early January 2018, the clothing company H&M released a new collection for children. One of the sweaters in the collection was printed with the text "Coolest monkey in the jungle". The shirt was worn by a dark-skinned child and H&M was accused of racism. This is because the word "monkey" has historically been used as a racist slur to downgrade dark-skinned people. Throughout the scandal H&M has published an official press release, as well as a number of posts on social media, each of which affects the scandal. The purpose of the study is to analyze H&Ms crisis communication with regard to the strategies they used during the shirt scandal. The main question of the study is how did H&M's crisis communication express itself in text during the shirt scandal. The theories used in the study are William Benoit's image repair theory (2014) and Timothy Coombs Situational crisis communication theory (2007), abbreviated SCCT. The methods used are a qualitative content analysis, text analysis and a rhetorical analysis. The qualitative content analysis is based on the chosen theories, so that the survey can extract the underlying message that H&M wants to convey. While the text analysis processes the text itself and how the company wants the reader to perceive the message and how H&M’s texts interact with each other. The rhetorical analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the text's underlying message and structure with the actual text as a starting point. The rhetorical analysis is done by analysing the text’s structure with the rhetoric disposition scheme as a starting point. H&M’s crisis communication is in this case related to what is proposed in the strategic theories of crisis communication. The main crisis communication strategies used by H&M were admitting responsibility, asking for forgiveness and corrective actions. The rhetoric analysis has shown that the press release and posts on social media have different functions. The press release make greater importance to the structure of the disposition scheme, while the social media posts rather contain certain parts, for example, a greater focus on pathos and the preparatory of counter arguments while communicating to individuals rather than the public.

Abstract:
Studiens syfte är att göra en kvantitativ undersökning av konsumenternas åsikt mot Corporate Social Responsbility med en avgränsning till modeföretaget H&M med målet är att kunna kartlägga en generaliserande åsikt bland konsumenterna. Till hjälp kommer det användas teorier om CSR, Public Relations och innebörden av Varumärket. Studiens fokus kommer rikta sig mer åt områdena inom CSR som är ekonomisk, socialt och miljömässigt ansvarstagande. Den utvalda metoden för att samla in information var med en webbenkät som skickades ut till utvalda Facebook grupper med inriktningen på mode och skönhet. Enkätens struktur består av fyra delar som inriktar sig på olika områden. Första delen handlar om respondentens vanor kring företaget som sedan följs upp av frågor om H&Ms Image i både reklam och nyhetsmedier. Sedan följs det upp av en CSR del men med andra ordval eftersom alla inte har kunskapen av begreppet CSR och avslutningsvis kommer en demografi del. Majoriteten av de som besvarat enkäten har aldrig läst H&Ms hållbarhetsrapport som finns tillgängligt på deras hemsida. Detta kan bero på omedvetenheten om vad CSR är men det som resultatet indikerar är att de ändå har starka åsikter om H&Ms arbete inom hållbarhet. I både frågorna om arbetsförhållanden och mänskliga rättigheter fanns en tydlig tendens att åsiktenen mot H&M är negativ men när det gäller det miljömässiga ansvarstagandet var det inte lika tydlig. Det skiljde sig även mellan könen då kvinnorna var mer kritiska till detta. Det var även en skillnad mellan olika utbildningsnivåer då högre utbildade var mindre kritiska än dem med en gymnasienivå. När det gäller åsiktenen mot den image som H&M speglar sig själva i sin reklam var det övervägande fler som ansåg att den är positiv än negativ. Denna frågan gav även möjligheten att motivera med egna ord. Svaren var delvis splittrade med att H&Ms reklam är modern men även att de använder sig av stereotypiska smala kvinnor kroppar. Det resultat som studien visar är att konsumenterna anser att H&M bör arbeta mer med sitt sociala ansvarstagande.

Abstract:
This study aims to see how H&M are using crisis communication through Facebook to investigate if they are able to contain their reputation and trustworthiness during and after crisis. This has been done by a quantitative content analysis and the qualitative critical discourse analysis with Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model. The study is based on theories relating to crisis communication, brand preservation, ethnicity and rhetoric. The study has been conducted on an official statement H&M made on its Facebook page where 579 comments were analyzed. In the quantitative analysis, three themes emerged from which qualitative research took its starting point to prevent the occurrence of subjective interpretations of the material. In the qualitative analysis, these themes developed and deployed in the categories racism, defense and insultment with subsequent subcategories. These themes were analyzed further in relation to the theoretical framework. H&Ms statement and answers have been analyzed separately. The study found that crises based on trust such as this children's collection probably trigger harder against smaller companies that are more dependent on reputation and credibility than world- leading clothing companies like H&M.

Denna undersökning försöker skapa en förståelse för vad som egentligen händer när klädjätten H&M samarbetar med kända modedesigners som Viktor & Rolf, och den paradox som uppstår när det billiga och tillgängliga möter det dyra och exklusiva. Litteraturstudier ger en förståelse för vilka mekanismer som ligger bakom konstruktionen av ett varumärke och dess immateriella berättelse. Genom intervjuer med olika personer synas samarbetet utifrån olika perspektiv. Även konsumenternas berättelsekonstruktion granskas något, för vilka är egentligen dem vi sett springa in på H&M när dörrarna öppnas och slåss över kläder? Vad är det de egentligen köper? Genom ett deltagande i kommershysterin när H&M släpper de åtråvärda kläderna för försäljning, granskas fenomenet på nära håll. Uppsatsen kommer fram till att det är de immateriella berättelserna som är avgörande för den hysteri som kläderna ger upphov till. Kläderna i sig är sekundära. Utan vetskapen om de kända modedesignerna bakom, är de relativt ointressanta. Men även kunderna bidrar själva till att skapa hets genom uppladdning inför köp som bland annat sker på bloggar på internet. Kunderna kan, genom dessa kläder, ikläda sig berättelser och symboler för en händelse, och visa på sitt eget ställningstagande och deltagande i hysterin. Uppsatsen syftar även till att undersöka relevansen i att ta upp sådana här frågor med elever i skolan och kommer fram till att ungdomar, ibland på ett oreflekterat sätt, har ett stort intresse för och kunskap om identitet, livsstilar och kläder. Vem ska lära ungdomar att kritiskt granska marknadskrafter som använder sig av dessa mekanismer om inte lärare och andra vuxna? Gestaltningsarbetet bygger vidare på berättandet som det centrala för kommunikation av design, och låter 6 för omvärlden möjligtvis okända personer spegla sig själva i ett från början (av västerländskt tradition) neutralt plagg som den vita t tröjan, som alterneras efter varje individs önskemål utifrån ett givet material. På så sätt berättas 6 designhistorier.

Abstract:
Bridges often use pile foundations behind MSE walls to help resist lateral loading from seismic and thermal expansion and contraction loads. Overdesign of pile spacing and sizes occur owing to a lack of design code guidance for piles behind an MSE wall. However, space constraints necessitate the installation of piles near the wall. Full scale lateral load tests were conducted on piles behind an MSE wall. This study involves the testing of four HP12X74 H-piles and four HSS12X12X5/16 square piles. The H-piles were tested with ribbed strip soil reinforcement at a wall height of 15 feet, and the square piles were tested with welded wire reinforcement at a wall height of 20 feet. The H-piles were spaced from the back face of the MSE wall at pile diameters 4.5, 3.2, 2.5, and 2.2. The square piles were spaced at pile diameters 5.7, 4.2, 3.1, and 2.1. Testing was based on a displacement control method where load increments were applied every 0.25 inches up to three inches of pile deflection. It was concluded that piles placed closer than 3.9 pile diameters have a reduction in their lateral resistance. P-multipliers were back-calculated in LPILE from the load-deflection curves obtained from the tests. The p-multipliers were found to be 1.0, 0.85, 0.60, and 0.73 for the H-piles spaced at 4.5, 3.2, 2.5, and 2.2 pile diameters, respectively. The p-multipliers for the square piles were found to be 1.0, 0.77, 0.63, and 0.57 for piles spaced at 5.7, 4.2, 3.1, and 2.1 pile diameters, respectively. An equation was developed to estimate p-multipliers versus pile distance behind the wall. These p-multipliers account for reduced soil resistance, and decrease linearly with distance for piles placed closer than 3.9 pile diameters. Measurements were also taken of the force induced in the soil reinforcement. A statistical analysis was performed to develop an equation that could predict the maximum induced reinforcement load. The main parameters that went into this equation were the lateral pile load, transverse distance from the reinforcement to the pile center normalized by the pile diameter, spacing from the pile center to the wall normalized by the pile diameter, vertical stress, and reinforcement length to height ratio where the height included the equivalent height of the surcharge. The multiple regression equations account for 76% of the variation in observed tensile force for the ribbed strip reinforcement, and 77% of the variation for the welded wire reinforcement. The tensile force was found to increase in the reinforcement as the pile spacing decreased, transverse spacing from the pile decreased, and as the lateral load increased.

Abstract:
Today we live in an advertised-oriented society and we are constantly exposed to commercialized messages. Most advertising is based on stereotypical portraits of humans. And something that has attracted attention during the last decade is the one-sided representation that appears in these advertisements. This matter has been particularly relevant during the last decade with the emergence of significant societal phenomena and the questioning of power relations in society. Among these, Black Lives Matter, Metoo, and the Body Positivity-movement. This study aims to investigate what stereotypes can be identified in H&Ms advertisement and if these have changed over the last two decades. The theoretic framework consists of representation, the designation of ethnicity, stereotypes, and corporate social responsibility. Semiotic image analysis has been used as the method, and from this tool such as denotation, connotation, and body rhetoric have been implemented for the execution of the analysis. The result that emerged from the analysis showed that the gender stereotypes have changed over the studied years, as well as the amount of diversity of the objects portrayed in H&Ms advertising. The diversity that holds the most significant change is that people of color are more prominent in the later ads. When it comes to diversity in body types and plus-size models a decrease can be identified. Furthermore, the results also left us questioning if it is successful for companies to include diversity and implement the current trends in society in their advertisement

Abstract:
We are constantly being fed information. Everything and everyone we come into contact with may somehow make a new impression on us, whether we are aware of it or not. One of the ways that people in today’s society in Sweden are being given information is via different types of media, for example through commercials. Whether it’s a video clip or a still-frame picture, a commercial is an effective way for a company to reach out to potential customers. However, it is not only the messages or signals that may appear obvious that these companies send out when advertising with commercials. When taking a closer look at a commercial, it becomes clear that these pictures or video clips may make more impressions than it may first appear. Commercials mirror the society that we are living in, yet at the same time they send out signals about what the society could be like. Creating expectations, longing and ideals; commercials have a larger impact on their public than it may first seem. In this essay we have chosen to focus on two Swedish brands: the grocery store Ica and the clothing brand Hennes & Mautriz (H&M). Focusing on three different time periods – the 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s – we have studied the development of these two companies commercials and analyzed what possible messages these commercials send out. Our main focus has been to study these brands from a gender critical perspective and analyzing how men and women are portrayed, comparing differences and similarities.

Les champignons produisent une grande variété de composés/métabolites biologiquement actifs qui peuvent être utilisés à des fins médicinales et pharmaceutiques. Les mitorubrines, membres de la famille des azaphilones, constituent un ensemble particulièrement intéressant de métabolites secondaires, présentant une grande étendue d'activités biologiques (e.g. antimicrobienne, antibactérienne, antipaludique). Ce travail présente le développement de plusieurs approches de spectrométrie de masse permettant de résoudre la diversité structurelle naturelle et la complexité des azaphilones extraits des champignons Hypoxylon fragiforme. La première partie de ce manuscrit est dédiée au développement et à la validation d'une méthodologie analytique impliquant la chromatographie liquide couplée à la spectrométrie de masse haute résolution pour la détection efficace et précise de traces d'azaphilones dans des extraits fongiques complexes. En outre, des expériences de spectrométrie de masse en mode tandem (par dissociation induite par collision, CID) et d'échange hydrogène/deutérium ont été effectuées pour élucider et caractériser les azaphilones et leurs analogues azotés chez Hypoxylon fragiforme. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l'application de ces différentes stratégies analytiques pour la caractérisation approfondie d'une nouvelle famille de métabolites secondaires dérivés des azaphilones, les mitorubramines. Enfin, ces différents métabolites secondaires ont été purifiés pour confirmer leur structure chimique par spectroscopie RMN

Sociala medier tillsammans med Instagram tar mer och mer plats i dagens samhälle och företag ställer sig ständigt frågan hur de bör marknadsföra sig där. Denna studie undersöker den uppkommande strategin regram, vilket innebär en återupprepning av en redan publicerad bild på Instagram. Denna studie baseras på de tre svenska klädkedjorna Gina Tricot, H&M och KappAhl samt dess användande av regrams via Instagram. Genom netnografisk forskningsmetod analyseras hur 56 regrams reaktioner påverkas utifrån innehåll, tillgänglighet och ursprungliga skapare. Utifrån detta är syftet att se vilka bild- och textkompositioner utifrån utvalda kategorier som bidrar till flest positiva och flest negativa reaktioner under den 17 veckor långa studieperioden. Resultatet visar att flest positiva reaktioner genereras av bild-kompositionen porträttbild. Detta medan flest negativa reaktioner framkommer från varierade bildkompositioner, där streetstyle-bilder sticker ut något. Ett textinnehåll av marknadsföring är vanligt använt och har bidragit till såväl flest positiva reaktioner som flest negativa. I studien presenteras att såväl innehåll som tillgänglighet och ursprungliga skapare påverkar reaktionerna för klädkedjornas regrams. Detta på både positiva och negativa sätt. Syftet är att bidra till en ökad förståelse för det sociala mediet Instagram, samt se hur marknadsförare kan dra nytta av strategin regram. Studien kan i slutändan på grund av diverse begränsningar inte ge några generella slutsatser för vilka kompositioner som bidrar till vilka reaktioner.
This study is based on the three Swedish clothing lines Gina Tricot, H&M and KappAhl and their use of regrams through Instagram. Through a netnographic research this study examines how the interaction of 56 regrams gets affected by content, presence and the original creators. Based on this, the aim is to see the most positive and most negative reactions that emerge from what compositions of picture and text. The 17 long period of studying the regrams shows that the composition portrait generates most positive interactions. This while the most negative reactions emerges from a variation where streetstyle images stand out a bit. A text content of marketing is commonly used and has contributed to the most positive and negative reactions. The study presents that as well as contents such as presence and original creators affects the reactions of the clothing lines regrams. In both positive and negative ways. The aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the social media Instagram and see how marketers of clothing lines can benefit from the studied strategy. The study is in the end not able to give any general conclusions, because of various restrictions.

Undervisningen i skolan syftar att se till alla människors lika värde samt jämställdhet mellan könen. Men hur ser det ut i bilder och representationer som finns inom reklam och media? Vilket tyst budskap figurerar bakom de förebilder i media som möter ungdomar i deras vardag? Undersökningen analyserar två inspirationsfilmer som fanns tillgängliga på H&Ms hemsida under mars månad 2014. Filmerna använder sig av förebilder, på dam respektive herravdelningen. Med hjälp av bildutsnitt, val av kontext skapas skillnad i budskapet filmerna emellan. Miranda May Kerr är underklädesmodell och David Beckham är fotbollsproffs. Filmens handling avstannar för att fokusera på May Kerrs kropp. May Kerr presentation premierar det hon är tillskillnad från vad hon gör i filmen. David Beckham presenteras istället för vad han föresätter sig i filmen. Han presenteras som en man med god fysik som antar utmaningar och löser problem. Beckhams kropp är i fokus men kontexten är en annan, vilket gör att fokus på kroppen blir sekundär i presentationen. Främst premieras hans förmåga att lösa problem och förmågan att tänka samt agera självständigt. Mina funderingar har kretsat kring huruvida det är möjligt att analysera dessa filmer med hjälp av feministisk konsthistorieanalys? Jag har studerat konsthistorikern Nanette Solomons teorier om hur ikoniska bilder har skapat genus med hjälp av förebilder genom tiderna inom konst samt kultur. Pudicagesten gestaltar en kvinna som skyler sina intima delar. Motivet ska ursprungligen skildra en ögonblicksscen då Afrodite steg upp ur havet och skyndade sig för att ta täcka sin kropp. Denna scen har sedan anammats och reproducerats, även Miranda antar denna gest i H&Ms inspirationsfilm. Med tiden följer ideal och teknik, någonting som jag gestaltar i min cirka en minut långa film. Kvinnans kropp har under lång tid varit laddad med skuld och skam. Miranda May Kerr samt David Beckham som används i H&Ms reklamfilm på dess hemsida figurerar huvudpersoner i min rörliga video gestaltning. En ljudslinga med djungeltema samt trumljud konnoterar primitivitet och urålderlighet, det faktum att kroppen har varit med oss genom alla tider. Ideal, gudar, skönhet och förebilder har följt oss från människans första stund till där vi står idag. Inklipp av äldre genusideal, är att visa på hur kulturen har ett starkt inflytande över oss med sitt tysta budskap och dolda ideal. Överlappande bilder varvas med inklipp av bland annat Afrodite, David Beckham. Under Aristoteles tid var det atletiska unga män som stod modell för den ideala mannen. Bilder med högupplöst opacitet blandas med varandra från Afrodites tid till Miranda May Kerr. Filmens raster konnoterar 1980 talets television. Ett flimrande skimmer, konnoterar tidens förgänglighet liksom min begränsade förmåga att se hur det är för dagens ungdom. Jag härleder till min egen uppväxt med blandband, vhs och bärbar cd-spelare. Idoler på posters och veckorevyn. Bildrutorna i uppsatsen konnoterar tetris, ett spel som bygger på att en ska passa in en modul i en annan för att skapa en fungerande helhet. Det finns inte tid till eftertanke och minsta misstag skapar ett hål i helheten. Det är på det viset jag härleder till seendet som en social och kulturell praktik. Det är alla lager av bilder som tillsammans skapar bilden av en förebild. Genom en dekonstruktion av bilder inom reklam, kan elever lära sig mer om den demokratiska blicken. En blick som kan användas genom pedagogiska glasögon och ser till allas lika värde oavsett etnicitet, religiös tillhörighet, genus eller sexuell läggning.

Denna studie är skapad för Medie- och kommunikationsvetenskapliga programmet på Karlstad Universitet. Uppsatsen skriven på B-nivå, det vill säga 7,5 högskolepoäng. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka och fylla kunskapsluckan kring hur, ur genus- och feministiskt perspektiv, kvinnokroppen framställs av varumärket H&M på kanalen Instagram. Frågeställningen som skapades utifrån dessa premisser blev därmed “På vilket sätt, ur ett genus- och feministiskt perspektiv, porträtterades kvinnokroppen i bilder på H&Ms Instagram under 2019?”. För att undersöka denna frågeställning valdes metoden kvantitativ innehållsanalys. Denna metod frambringar generaliserbara resultat som går att applicera på samtliga enheter i populationen. Materialet som används för denna studie består av 100 analysenheter i form av Instagraminlägg, tagna från H&Ms Instagram den 11 maj 2020. Dessa 100 analysenheter har erhållits genom slumpmässigt obundet urval, där populationen bestod av samtliga inlägg H&M publicerat, under perioden 2019. Kraven för bilderna var att de innehöll minst en kvinna. I de analysenheter som innehöll flera kvinnor analyserades kvinnan placerad längst till vänster. Genom studien visade resultaten att kvinnor genom flertalet undersökta variabler och applicerade feministiska och genusperspektiv, porträtterade kvinnokroppen som undergiven samt objektifierad. En handfull resultat visade på motsatsen, där resultaten antingen talade för motsatsen eller för en mer neutral porträttering. Slutsatsen drogs att kvinnokroppen i H&Ms Instagram under 2019 porträtteras som undergiven och objektifierad, då övervägande resultat pekade på detta.
This study was written at the Media and Communication Studies program at Karlstad University. The thesis is written at B-level, which constitutes 7,5 HP. The purpose of this study is to explore and fill the scientific knowledge gap surrounding the way the female body is portrayed on H&M’s Instagram from a feminist and gender perspective. The research question originated from these premises and is consequently phrased “In which way, from a feminist and gender perspective, was the female body portrayed on H&Ms Instagram during 2019?”. The method quantitative content analysis was chosen to investigate and examine the question at hand. Using this method will enable the possibility to generalize the results and apply them to all units of the chosen population. The material used in this study consists of 100 units in the form of Instagram posts, extracted May 11th, 2020. All 100 units were obtained through the selection method simple random sample (SRS), in which the population consisted of all H&Ms published posts, without exception, during the period of 2019. The requirements to become an analytical unit, was for the image to portray at least one woman. In the units where several women were portrayed, the woman placed furthest to the left was examined. The study showed, through several variables together with the theoretical framework, that the female body is portrayed as an object and furthermore as submissive. A handful of the results argued against this statement, where the results either showed on the contrary or a neutral position of power. The predominant results showed that H&M’s Instagram, during 2019, are objectifying the female body and putting it in a submissive position.

Sammandrag: Företag strävar kontinuerligt efter att bygga ett välkänt och framgångsrikt varumärke. De strävar efter att tillfredsställa konsumenters behov för att öka varumärkets värde, brand equity. Genom att försöka avgöra konsumenters inställning till ett visst varumärke och deras förhållning till ett utökat sortiment i en ny produktkategori syftar denna uppsats till att diskutera och utforska förändringen av varumärkets brand equity. Vid denna undersökning har H&Ms varumärke och deras nya sportkollektion använts som exempel. Teorin behandlar varumärkets värde, brand equity, utifrån ett konsumentperspektiv samt utvidgning av produktutbud hos varumärken. Konsumenter styr ett varumärkes värde och då studien undersöks från ett konsumentperspektiv, var det av intresse att fokusera på Consumer Based Brand Equitys, CBBEs, fyra olika dimensioner: lojalitet, medvetenhet, upplevd kvalitet och associationer. Genom en kvantitativ enkätundersökning fick respondenterna bland annat svara på i vilken utsträckning de förknippade olika faktorer med H&Ms varumärke och därefter i vilken utsträckning de förknippade samma faktorer med den nya sportkollektionen. Några faktorer som användes var kvalitet, modeinriktat, pris, exklusivitet, känt m.fl. Med det teoretiska ramverket tolkades de empiriska resultaten för att kunna besvara uppsatsens syfte. Resultaten visade, till viss mån, en positiv förändring av värdet för varumärket på grund av den nya sportkollektionen, samt att det finns tendenser till fortsatt överensstämmelse mellan H&Ms varumärke och en sportfokuserad produktkontext.

L'expérience H. E. S. S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) a pour objectif l'observation du ciel austral en rayons γ de très haute énergie. L'observatoire, constitué de quatre télescopes fonctionnant en stéréoscopie et situé en Namibie, est un des plus performants au monde. Enregistrant des données depuis 2003, c'est l'instrument idéal pour l'observation du plan galactique et la détection des nombreuses sources qui s'y trouvent. Trois méthodes d'analyse ont été mises en place, s'appuyant sur différentes propriétés des gerbes électromagnétiques issues de l'interaction des γ avec l'atmosphère. L'objectif premier de cette thèse était de combiner les informations issues de ces trois méthodes pour la sélection des événements et la reconstruction de la direction et de l'énergie des gamma. La nouvelle analyse, appelée Xeff, apporte un gain significatif sur la qualité de la sélection et sur la précision de reconstruction de l'énergie et de la direction. L'analyse Xeff a été utilisée pour l'étude de nébuleuses de pulsar telles que Vela X, GO. 9+0. 1 et MSH 15-52. De nouveaux résultats ont été mis en évidence concernant l'extension de la source (Vela X) ou la forme spectrale (GO. 9+0. 1 et MSH 15-52) grâce à de nouvelles observations et à l'efficacité de l'analyse mise en place. Dès 2010, l'expérience rentrera dans une nouvelle phase avec l'achèvement d'un cinquième télescope, dédié à l'observation des rayons gamma à partir de quelques dizaines de GeV. Les tests mis en place pour l'étalonnage des photomultiplicateurs et les résultats obtenus sont décrits dans le manuscrit
H. E. S. S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) is one of the leading systems of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes that investigates very high energy (VHE) cosmic γ-rays in the 100 GeV to 100 TeV energy range. H. E. S. S. Is located in Namibia, near the Gamsberg mountain and operational since December 2003. The H. E. S. S. Experiment is mainly aimed to the observation of the southern sky including the galactic plan and the numerous astrophysics sources therein. Three analysis methods have been developed using various properties of the electromagnetic showers generated by the interaction of primary cosmic γ-rays within the Earth atmosphere. The first goal of this thesis was to combine the information from these methods for the selection and the energy and direction reconstruction of γ-ray events. The new analysis called Xeff improves significantly the quality of the selection and the precision of the reconstruction. This analysis has been afterwards applied to the study of pulsar wind nebulae like Vela X, GO. 9+0. 1 and MSH 15-52. New results were found concerning the source extension (Vela X) or spectral analysis (GO. 9+0. 1 and MSH 15-52) at TeV energies, thanks to additional data and to the improved efficiency of the new method. In 2010, a new phase will begin with the achievement of a fifth telescope dedicated to γ-ray observation from tens GeV. The calibration processes of the photomultipliers equipping the camera of the new telescope, as well as the results of the tests, are also described in this thesis

The crude oils available for the refining industry are heavier and heavier and more concentrated in metals and heteroelements. It is thus of great importance to study the speciation of these species within the petroleum products and their behavior during the refining processes. To answer that problematic, elemental and molecular characterization techniques have been used, mainly High Resolution ICP MS and FT ICR MS for the elemental and molecular characterization respectively. The analytical techniques quoted are used for the analysis of several petroleum products sometimes originating from refining processes and the information obtained at the elemental and molecular level are combined to improve our understanding of the mechanisms occurring within our samples during refining activities

O conhecimento da composi??o do petr?leo e seus produtos ? uma necessidade imprescind?vel numa refinaria para o ajuste das condi??es do processo. Desta forma a otimiza??o do refino de petr?leo ? fundamental para a predi??o da distribui??o dos produtos e sua qualidade. Realizar o estudo cin?tico da degrada??o t?rmica e catal?tica na presen?a da ze?lita H ?Beta e avaliar os produtos obtidos por PY - CG/ MS de petr?leo leve foi o objetivo principal deste trabalho. Contudo, foram feitas correla??es de dados obtidos atrav?s da destila??o Simulada por Cromatografia a G?s (SIMDIST), da an?lise termogravim?trica (TG/DTG) e da pir?lise acoplada a um espectr?metro de massas (GC/MS), para auxiliar nas an?lises dos dados obtidos. Atrav?s da t?cnica de Fluoresc?ncia de Raios X por Energia Dispersiva (EDX), seguindo o m?todo ASTM D4294 foi poss?vel determinar o teor de enxofre contido na amostra. A termogravimetria (TG/DTG) apresentou tr?s etapas de perdas de massa, onde a primeira etapa est? relacionada ? remo??o de hidrocarbonetos e compostos org?nicos leves. Na segunda etapa ocorre a decomposi??o de arom?ticos de alta massa molecular. E na terceira etapa, ocorreu a degrada??o de coque. Atrav?s da t?cnica de PY ? GC/MS foram detectados os produtos de degrada??o da amostra de petr?leo nas temperaturas de 250?C, 350?C e 450?C, com e sem a presen?a da ze?lita H-Beta. A degrada??o t?rmica e catal?tica da amostra de petr?leo leve foi realizada da temperatura ambiente at? 900?C, nas raz?es de aquecimento de 5, 10 e 20oC min-1. As curvas geradas pela TG/DTG apresentaram uma degrada??o mais acelerada na amostra de petr?leo sem catalisador H-Beta. Esses resultados foram ratificados pela energia de ativa??o, calculada atrav?s do m?todo cin?tico ? Livre (Vyazovkin modelfree Kinetic), em que a presen?a do catalisador reduziu a energia, em especial na faixa de craqueamento, mostrando a efici?ncia do processo, principalmente para a obten??o de materiais leves da composi??o da amostra de petr?leo leve, como diesel e gasolina.
Knowledge of the oil composition and its products is an absolute necessity in a refinery for adjusting the process conditions. Thus the optimization of petroleum refining is essential for predicting the distribution of products and their quality. Perform the kinetic study of the thermal and catalytic degradation in the presence of zeolite H -Beta and evaluate the products obtained by PY-GC/MS of light oil was the main objective of this work. However, data correlations were made obtained by Simulated Distillation by Gas Chromatography (SIMDIST), the thermal gravimetric analysis (TG / DTG) and pyrolysis coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC/MS), to assist in the analysis of data. Through Fluorescence technique of X-ray energy dispersive (EDX) following the ASTM D4294 method it was possible to determine the sulfur content in the sample. Thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) showed three-step weight loss, where the first stage relates to the removal of light hydrocarbons and organic compounds. The second step is decomposition of aromatic high molecular weight. And the third stage was the degradation of coke. Through the technique PY-GC/MS were detected degradation products of the oil sample at temperatures of 250?C, 350?C and 450?C, with and without the presence of zeolite H-Beta. The thermal and catalytic degradation of light oil sample was carried out from room temperature to 900C, the heating rates of 5, 10 and 20 ? C min-1. The curves generated by TG/DTG showed a faster degradation in the sample oil without H-Beta catalyst. These results were confirmed by activation energy calculated using the kinetic method - Free (Vyazovkin modelfree Kinetic) in the presence of the catalyst decreased energy, in particular in cracking band, showing the process efficiency, particularly for obtaining lightweight materials of light oil sample composition, such as diesel and gasoline.

Abstract:
The lateral resistance of pile foundations has typically been based on the resistance of circular pipe piles. In addition, most instrumented lateral load tests and cases history have involved circular piles. However, piles used in engineering practice may also be non-circular cross-section piles such as square and H piles. Some researchers have theorized that the lateral resistance of square piles will be higher than that of circular piles (Reese and Van Impe, 2001; Briaud et al, 1983; Smith, 1987) for various reasons, but there is not test data to support this claims. To provide basic comparative performance data, lateral load tests were performed on piles with circular, square and H sections. To facilitate comparisons, all the tests piles were approximately 12 inches in width or diameter and were made of steel. The square and circular pipe sections had comparable moments of inertia; however, the H pile was loaded about the weak axis, as is often the case of piles supporting integral abutments, and had a much lower moment of inertia. The granular fill around the pile was compacted to approximately 95% of the standard Proctor maximum density and would be typical of fill for a bridge abutment. Lateral load was applied with a free-head condition at a height of 1 ft above the ground surface. To define the load-deflection response, load was applied incrementally to produce deflection increments of about 0.25 inches up to a maximum deflection of about 3 inches. Although the square and pipe pile sections had nearly the same moment of inertia, the square pile provided lateral resistance that was 20 to 30% higher for a given deflection. The lateral resistance of the H pile was smaller than the other two pile shapes but higher than what it is expected based on the moment of inertia. Back analysis with the computer program LPILE indicates that the pile shape was influencing the lateral resistance. Increasing the effective width to account for the shape effect as suggested by Reese and Van Impe (2001) was insufficient to account for the increased resistance. To provide agreement with the measured response, p-multipliers of 1.2 and 1.35 were required for the square pile and H piles, respectively. The analyses suggest that the increased resistance for the square and H pile sections was a result of increases in both the side shear and normal stress components of resistance. Using the back-calculated p-multipliers provided very good agreement between the measured and computed load-deflection curves and the bending moment versus depth curves.

La collection d'enclaves ultramafiques-mafiques des îles Kerguelen est l'une des plus diversifiée du contexte intraplaque océanique et a servi de support à l'étude des fluides, marqueur du métasomatisme mantellique associe à un point chaud. Ces enclaves sont caractérisées par une relative abondance en phases hydroxylées (amphiboles, micas) et carbonatées. Des basaltes alcalins, contenant des mégacristaux d'amphibole et de mica, ont également été étudiés. L'étude pétrologique et géochimique détaillée (cristallochimie, isotopes stables : o, c, h ; éléments en traces-LAM-ICP-MS) a mis en évidence le rôle et la nature des fluides percolants le manteau et la croute profonde. Ils sont d'origine mantellique et liés à la dernière activité magmatique alcaline attribuée au panache de Kerguelen. Les compositions chimiques particulièrement riches en TIO 2 des amphiboles et des micas ont permis de préciser les conditions de stabilisation de ces silicates à haute température. Les amphiboles, les micas et les carbonates ont conservé des signatures isotopiques (O, H, C) de haute température et relativement homogènes. Les signatures isotopiques de l'hydrogène montrent une distribution bimodale qui traduit pour une même température, l'existence de 2 fluides mantelliques différents. Les carbonates présents dans les laves et les péridotites de Kerguelen ont des compositions isotopiques (C, O) strictement péridotitiques et ne montrent à priori aucune évidence d'un composant lithosphérique recyclé. Les phases hydroxylées constituent des réservoirs préférentiels pour les HFSE et les LILE. Les coefficients de partages interminéraux et minéraux/magma ont pu être précisés pour un grand nombre d'éléments (25) dans les liquides magmatiques percolants.

It is very probable that VoIP will soon replace the ordinary telephone. Beside all advantages of the digital voice-connection it is linked to the danger of spam on the telephone. A lot of approaches have been developed to solve the problem of VoIP spam. Because some of these solutions are based on access to personal information of its users, a broad discussion about the best and most ethical approach has started.

This thesis analyzes the users’ point of view towards the VoIP spam problem and the extent of users’ willingness to offer private information in order to avoid VoIP spam. It presents results from a qualitative and a quantitative research as well as approaches for a most realistic- and most promising VoIP solution. These new approaches are based on the results of the research.

The main points of the results showed that users were not willing to offer private information to companies and that they were not willing to pay any amount of money for VoIP spam solutions. Users held governmental organisations and telephone operators responsible for finding a solution against VoIP spam.

Italicum de Corse et de mettre en évidence les différents paramètres susceptibles d'optimiser son rendement et la qualité de sa composition chimique. Il doit également contribuer à acquérir une meilleure connaissance des besoins nutritifs et des conditions de développement de la plante en étudiant, d'une part, sa composition chimique inorganique et d'autre part, les composantes physiques et chimiques des sols sur lesquels ce végétal se développe dans le milieu naturel. L'analyse de la composition chimique des huiles essentielles a été réalisée par CPG et CPG-SM. Il a été établi des comparaisons entre les compositions chimiques des huiles essentielles d' Helichrysum italicum subsp. Italicum de Corse et de Toscane et celles des huiles essentielles de la sous-espèce microphyllum de Corse et de Sardaigne. De même, pour l'immortelle de Corse, ont été mises en évidence les variations de la composition chimique en fonction du cycle végétatif, des paramètres biotiques et abiotiques et des modes d'obtention de l'huile essentielle. La composition chimique inorganique de l'immortelle a été étudiée par ICP-MS, ICP-AES, SAAF/SEAF et colorimétrie en flux continu. De même, la nature chimique des sols sur lesquels se développe la plante a été déterminée. Une étude par partition de variance a permis de mettre en évidence certaines relations triangulaires entre les composantes physico-chimiques du sol, la composition inorganique du végétal et la composition chimique de l'huile essentielle.

The ability to monitor protein aggregation at the molecular level is critical for progress in many areas of life sciences ranging from exploring mechanisms of amyloidosis and etiology of conformational diseases to development of safe and efficient biopharmaceutical products. Despite the spectacular progress in understanding the mechanisms of protein aggregation in recent years, many aspects of the aggregating proteins' behavior remain unclear because of the extreme difficulty in tracking evolution of these notoriously complex and heterogeneous systems. Here, we introduce an electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS)-based methodology that allows the early stages of heat-induced aggregation to be studied by monitoring both conformational changes and formation of oligomers as a function of temperature or stress duration. The new approach allows biopolymer behavior (both reversible and irreversible processes) to be monitored in great detail over a wide temperature range. Validation of the methodology is carried out by comparing temperature profiles of model proteins and nucleic acids deduced from MS measurements and differential scanning calorimetry. In order to evaluate the suitability of ESI MS for direct profiling of soluble glycoprotein aggregates, we used heat-stressed human antithrombin, to compare size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and ESI MS as a means to probe composition of the complex mixture of soluble oligomeric species generated by heat-induced aggregation. Once the appropriate corrections are made, the abundance of the small aggregates derived from ESI MS becomes remarkably close to that calculated based on SEC data, suggesting that ESI MS may be directly applied for at least semi-quantitative characterization of soluble protein aggregates. Application of the methodology to study heat-induced aggregation of human glucocerebrosidase and antithrombin unequivocally links loss of conformational fidelity to formation of soluble oligomers, which serve as precursors to aggregation. Sequential conformational transition of a monoclonal antibody can also be sensitively probed with this method. The ability to make a distinction between various biopolymeric species (based on the differences in their masses) and their conformers (based on the differences in their charge state distributions) allows the temperature-controlled ESI-MS measurements to be carried out in complex systems with very high degree of specificity. This unique feature of the new experimental technique makes it very appealing to the biotech and biopharmaceutical sectors, where the need to engineer/formulate stable biopolymer-based products (e.g., protein drugs) places a premium on the ability to characterize their behavior as a function of temperature with a high degree of precision and accuracy. One of the unique advantages of hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX MS) as a tool to probe protein higher order structure and dynamics is its ability to detect distinct conformational states under certain conditions. When the exchange follows the so-called EX1 or EXX regime, a distinction among various conformers can be made based on the different levels of deuterium incorporation, which manifest themselves in the form of bi- or multi-modal isotopic distributions of protein ions. In this work we exploit this unique advantage of HDX MS and the ability of mass spectrometers to select narrow populations of protein ions to develop a method which allows structure of distinct conformers to be probed at high spatial resolution. Ubiquitin is selected as the model. Validation of the method is carried out by comparing relative magnitude of protection of individual backbone amides deduced from MS and NMR measurements. The two conformers coexisting in the model system exhibit remarkable difference in deuterium incorporation at expected portions of protein sequence. The comparison to reference conformational states of ubiquitin reveals the structural nature of these conformers. These results demonstrate the capability of the top-down HDX MS/MS to specifically capture the conformational features of individual intermediates co-existing at equilibrium.

The first topic of this thesis proposes a 10-bit, 30 Msample/s pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) suitable for digital video broadcasting over handheld (DVB-H) systems. The ADC is based on the 1.5-bit-per-stage pipeline architecture. The proposed design is implement- ed by 0.18 um CMOS technology. The input range is 2 V peak-to-peak differential signals, and the post-layout simulation result shows that the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is 57.85 dBc with a full-scale sinusoidal input at 700 KHz. The maximum power consumption is 37 mW given a 3.3 V power supply. The core area is 0.27 mm2. The second topic is to propose a fully mixed-voltage-tolerant I/O cell implemented using typical CMOS 2P4M 0.35 um process. Unlike traditional mixed-voltage-tolerant I/O cell, the proposed design can transmit and receive the digital signals with voltage levels of 5/3.3/1.8 V. By using stacked PMOS and stacked NMOS at the output stage and a voltage level converter providing appropriate control voltages for the gates of the stacked PMOS, the gate-oxide overstress and hot-carrier degradation are avoided. Moreover, gate-tracking and floating N-well circuits are used to remove the undesirable leakage current paths. The maximum transmitting speed of the proposed I/O cell is 103/120/84 Mbps for the supply voltage of I/O cell at 5/3.3/1.8 V, respectively, given the load of 20 pF.

Blueberry spanworm, Itame argillacearia (Packard), is an important defoliator of wild (syn. ‘lowbush’) blueberry in north-eastern North America. Identification of I. argillacearia sex pheromone(s) could be useful for monitoring, mating disruption or mass trapping, as a way to improve integrated pest management programs for this pest. Thus, the main goal of this study was to identify sex pheromone(s) of I. argillacearia. The courtship, mating and oviposition patterns of I. argillaceara, was studied in the laboratory. GC/MS, GC/EAD and EAG analysis of pheromone gland extracts, in combination with y-tube experiments and two field trapping studies confirmed the chiral-alkenyl-epoxide, (3R,4S)-epoxy-(Z,Z)-6,9-17:H and tri-ene, (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-17:H as the major female-produced sex pheromone components. Contech Wing traps® placed at canopy level were effective for capturing male I. argillacearia moths.

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies in the Czech Republic. In general, there are two molecular pathways leading to CRC: one is characterized by chromosomal instability, the other by the deficiency in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. MutL homologue 1 (MLH1) gene, a member of the MMR gene-family, represents a key component of the MMR system, responsible for recognition of nucleotide mismatches occurring during DNA replication, and for the recruitment of repair proteins to correct the replication errors. According to literature, somatic mutations in MMR genes, and MLH1 in particular, hallmark sporadic, MMR deficient, CRC cases. We aimed at analyzing somatic events in MLH1 gene and the determination of microsatellite instability (MSI) status in 99 DNA samples from 96 patients with sporadic CRC. Mutations were screened by high resolution melting (HRM) curve analysis. Positive cases in each run were subsequently verified by automated sequencing. Mainly gene variants were found in MLH1 gene: We discovered two new variants, one in exon 2 at position c. 204 C>G, p. Ile68Met (98 C/C, 1C/G) and the other in exon 11 at position c. 973 C>T, p. Arg325Trp (98 C/C, 1 C/T). Only the latter variant c. 973 C>T was identified as somatic mutation. All other variants found in MLH1 gene...

Abstract:
Laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is an in-situ analytical technique for analysis of trace element and isotopic compositions in a wide range of materials. LA-ICP-MS has been utilized for more than 30 years in the geoscience community, but the technique still suffers from inaccuracies related to non-representative sampling of ablated material. This term has been broadly described as element fractionation and is thought to occur both at the site of ablation and in the plasma of the ICP-MS. Improvement of the LA-ICP-MS analytical technique by increased understanding of fundamental instrument processes and development of mineral standards can significantly improve geochemical and geochronological data capabilities and uses. There are two main parts of this study, the first, is an investigation into the fundamental aspects of ionization and extraction of ions into the mass spectrometer using both laser ablation and nebulizing a solution of dilute nitric acid with ppb level solutes. The second is an investigation using nanosecond pulse width excimer lasers to analyse a variety of minerals and glasses for their trace element, U-Pb isotopic and Pb isotopic compositions and comparing the results to published values to assess sources of bias in the LA-ICP-MS analytical technique. The use of ICP-MS for laser ablation was not initially considered during the design of ICP-MS instrumentation because most previous applications used a nebulizer and spray chamber to introduce liquid solutions. While early work showed that a laser ablation system could easily be coupled to an ICP-MS, with several advantages including lower polyatomic species from lack of H2O; little work has been done on understanding how the laser ablation aerosol (dry plasma) interacts with the plasma and ion extraction process compared to traditional solution nebulization (wet plasma). This study builds on previous work to demonstrate the differences in the electrical potential of the ICP between wet and dry plasma, as this has an effect on the distribution of ion energies that are sampled from the ICP. This distribution of ion energies is a function of plasma temperature, and temperatures calculated in this work suggest that dry plasma conditions are cooler than wet plasma conditions (2441 K vs. 3055 K). Ion energy distributions are also affected by perturbations in the ion beam such as space charge effects and this work suggests there are likely differences in space charge, or spatial biasing light vs. heavy ions in the ion beam, between the wet and dry plasma ion beams. Oxide and hydroxide polyatomic species are a common issue in ICP-MS, particularly for elements with high MO\(^+\) bond energies (e.g. La). This study investigates the formation of oxide and hydroxide species between wet and dry plasma by investigating the parameters controlling formation, ways to suppress these interferences, and the interference’s ion energy distributions. The interference’s ion energy distributions can provide information about the location of formation within the plasma / ICP-MS, the knowledge of which aides in preventing and minimizing interferences. Oxide formation rates in dry plasma are significantly less than wet plasma (>10x lower) which is consistent with previous work. However, this study also demonstrates that a greater stopping potential is needed to attenuate the oxide signal relative to atomic ion signals for wet plasma compared to dry plasma (4 V vs. 1 V for wet and dry plasma respectively). This demonstrates there is a fundamental difference in the formation of oxide species between the two modes of ICP-MS operation; likely related to source of oxygen between wet and dry plasma. There is a similar effect on the hydroxide polyatomic species between wet and dry plasma, however the formation of hydroxide species and oxide species is not linked for dry plasma, suggesting a different mechanism of formation. Absorbed atmospheric air and water vapour can have a significant negative affect on accuracy of elements such as \(^{57}\)Fe in high Ca matrixes, and this has implications for how samples are stored prior to analysis. Addition of diatomic gases (N\(_2\) and H\(_2\)) are common in LA-ICP-MS to improve sensitivity, however, the effect of these gases on the properties of the ion beam and ion energy distribution has not been previously explored. This study shows that the addition of H\(_2\) has a significant impact on the ion energy distribution of the ICP-MS while N\(_2\) has no effect on ion energy distribution despite similar ionization energies for both gases. N\(_2\) and to a lesser extent H\(_2\) can change how a plasma will digest particles during LA-ICP-MS by cooling the plasma and allowing for incomplete digestion of particles. Incomplete particle digestion is potential sources of element fractionation in ICP-MS and an improved understanding of these process will allow for better method development and improved accuracy of results. U-Pb geochronology in zircon and apatite by LA-ICP-MS is commonplace in the geological community. However, despite this, there are situations where the precision is better than accuracy, leading to inaccurate age dating. This study contributes to the understanding of causes of this U-Pb inaccuracy by analysing a range of zircon and apatite reference materials with independent age constraints. Optimization of laser parameters can improve the U-Pb dating method by reducing the amount of element fractionation during aerosol generation. Small variations in nanosecond pulse width (5 vs. 15) are shown to have a negligible impact on the accuracy of the technique and suggests the causes of intra-lab discrepancies are unlikely due to differences in source laser. However, lower (< 2 J/cm\(^2\) ) laser fluence will result in shallower laser craters and reduced element fractionation leading to more accurate results compared to analyses performed at higher fluence. Differences in atmospheric air in the laser cell or system is an additional, previously unknown, source of inaccuracy of zircon U-Pb analysis. Because of the lack of H\(_2\)O species in the plasma, trace amounts of water vapour, O\(_2\) or N\(_2\) gas can significantly change the properties of the ICP or local conditions at the ablation site. Using a set of controlled degased and un-degased samples, up to a 4% difference in age throughout the laser cell is correlated to the amount of atmospheric air present. The zircon matrix effect during U-Pb dating by LA-ICP-MS has been previously shown to correlate to the radiation dose a zircon has received. This effect on measured U-Pb ages as a function of radiation damage is reduced by using a lower laser fluence (~1.5% difference in age for high radiation dose zircon). Additionally, a correction to the measured zircon U-Pb age based on the radiation dose has been developed using analysis of a wide range of zircon reference materials with varying radiation doses. The addition of new matrix-matched reference materials will allow for U-Pb quantification and reduce the mineral-specific fractionation offsets possible in geochronology. Two new apatite reference materials for U-Pb dating: 401 apatite and the OD306 apatite have been developed and made available to the geochronological community. These two apatite materials are close to concordant (1% to 10% discordant) and have isotope dilution ages, neither of which is true for most of the current apatite U-Pb reference materials available. Quasi-simultaneous detection offered by time-of-flight (TOF) technology is compared to traditional sequentially-based measurements done by quadrupole mass filters. Use of math based measurements are inherently disadvantageous for transient signals from LA-ICP-MS as the more elements in an analytical method, the more detail will be missed or mis-represented due to spectral skew. However, few studies have utilized the TOF technology for LA-ICP-MS. This study is the first to demonstrate a direct comparison of U-Pb dating of zircon using a split-stream arrangement between a quadrupole and a TOF-ICP-MS. The results of these experiments show that similar accuracy and precision can be obtained for each type of ICP-MS, despite the significantly lower (>10x) sensitivity of the TOF instrument. This study shows the potential of the TOF technology for wider application by the LA-ICP-MS community.
