Roy, Wendy J. "Maps of gender and imperialism in travel writing by Anna Jameson, Mina Hubbard, and Margaret Laurence." Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=38516.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of writings and illustrative material by Canadian travel writers Anna Jameson, Mina Hubbard, and Margaret Laurence, that attempts to reconcile the masculinist focus of postcolonial criticism and the charges of cultural imperialism levied against feminist criticism with the role postcolonial and feminist theories play in understanding women's travel narratives. I argue that Jameson's 1838 Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada, Hubbard's 1908 A Woman's Way through Unknown Labrador, and Laurence's 1963 The Prophet's Camel Bell provide maps of the political, cultural, and physical features of the areas through which the women travelled, and of their own social and cultural positions. Their mapping is also done through more graphic media---including Hubbard's cartographic work, Hubbard's and Laurence's photographs, and Jameson's unpublished sketches---which reflect and complicate the written negotiations of gender and imperialism in which the three women engage.
Because my aim is to reconcile theoretical contradictions, I examine in detail books that clearly dramatize colonialist or anti-imperialist approaches and considerations or exemplifications of issues of gender. Not surprisingly, the three writers draw very different maps of those subjects, as a function of their disparate geographical and historical contexts. This study reveals, however, that the maps themselves are drawn with similar tools, which include an anti-racist philosophy and an acute awareness of women's position in their own and the visited societies. Thus Jameson makes philosophical connections between mid-nineteenth-century feminist and anti-racist theoretical approaches; Hubbard provides insights into an early twentieth-century woman traveller's relationship to First Nations men who have both more and less power than she; and Laurence serves as a witness to and astute reporter on oppression of mid-twentieth century women by specific colonial and patriarchal forces.

Carlsson, Ella. "Mars : plasma environment and surface." Doctoral thesis, Luleå, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-16797.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis treats parts of the solar wind interaction with the Martian atmosphere and the water-related features known as gullies. The composition of the escaping plasma at Mars has been investigated in an analysis of data from the IMA sensor, which is a part of the ASPERA-3 instrument suit onboard the European satellite Mars Express. The goal of the investigation is to determine if there are any high abundances of escaping ion species incorporating carbon, such as in CO_2^+ . The most abundant ion species was found to be O^+ and O_2^+, followed by CO_2^+. The following ratios were identifed: CO_2^+/O^+ = 0:2 and O_2^+ /O^+ = 0:9. The escaping plasma, in form of ion beam events, has also been correlated to the magnetic anomalies found on the surface, where no clear association was found. Similar ion beams have also been detected on Venus, which does not have any crustal magnetic fields, and hence the fields are not required for the formation process of the beams. The ion beams' dependence of the direction of the solar wind convection electric field has also been studied, where a correlation was found, suggesting that the ion beams are accelerated by this field. The studies mentioned above are important in order to understand the evolution of Mars and its atmosphere, as well as plasma acceleration processes at non-magnetized planetary bodies. On 5 December 2006 the ASPERA instruments of both Venus Express and Mars Express detected a large enhancement in their respective background count level. These readings are associated with events of SEPs (Solar Energetic Particles), which are believed to be coupled with the CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejection) identified 43 ¡ 67 hours after the SEPs. The CMEs occurred on the far side of the sun (with respect to the locations of Venus and Mars), which indicates that these events can a®ect the space weather in areas situated 90 degrees in both azimuthal directions in the heliosphere with respect to the target. During this event the heavy ion outflow from the atmosphere of Mars increased by one order of magnitude, suggesting that EUV flux levels significantly affect the atmospheric loss from unmagnetized bodies. The gully formations have been investigated with data from the MOC, MOLA and TES instruments onboard the satellite Mars Global Surveyor. The features suggest that there has been fluvial erosion on the surface of Mars. The shallow and deep aquifer models remain the most plausible formation theories. Gully formation processes are important to understand since their eroding agent may be liquid water.

Tampu, Iulian Emil. "Morphological characterization of neural tissue microstructure using the orientationally-averaged diffusion MRI signal." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen för medicinsk teknik, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-158153.

Full text
Abstract:
Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is a powerful tool for thecharacterisation of neural tissue microstructural features. The role of neural projectioncurvature on the diffusion signal was recently studied for three temporal regimes of the diffusion pulse sequence in search for a description of the different decay trends in the orientationally-averaged diffusion signal reported in in vivo human studies. This work experimentally investigates the effects of neural projection curvedness in one of these regimes, namely the short diffusion time regime. Multi-shell diffusion MRI acquisitions on fixed rat spinal cord were performed using a custom number of diffusion gradient directions on a vertical bore pre-clinical MRI scanner capable of generating 3000 mT/m. Diffusion was probed in three different q-values ranges [450, 970], [600, 1400] and [1500, 1750] mm-1 using diffusion pulse durations of 1.4,2 and 2.5ms, respectively. Noise correction was performed on the diffusion data and the orientationally-averaged signal was computed for each shell using a weighted mean. The signal from selected regions in the sample was then fitted to a power law. Results show that gray matter areas exhibit a signal reduction with variable decay trends in the range of diffusion sensitivity values used here. This suggests that gray matter microstructure features are pictured by the orientationally-averaged signal in the high diffusion sensitivity regime and, as theoretically suggested, neurite curvature might play a role in characterizing the signal decay. These preliminary results may prove useful in the development of models for the interpretation of the diffusion signal and the design of acquisition strategies that aim to study the high diffusion sensitivity regime.

Full text
Abstract:
Integral part of the French Plan Navarre, the operation Atlante was conducted by the French and Vietnamese forces during the first half of 1954, against the Lien Khu V (a Vietminh stronghold established in Annam since the end of the WW II). France expected to take the initiative in the south of the 16th parallel in supporting the first massive involvement of the new Vietnamese Armed Forces. France wanted to prove the credibility of a Vietnamese Government acting in the framework of the French Union. Aréthuse, the first phase of the operation, achieved the conquest and the pacification of the Phu Yen, the first Vietminh province. The second phase, Axelle, took place during the battle of Dien Bien Phu and the beginning of the negotiations in Geneva, forcing the troops to carry out fierce fighting in order to block a robust Viêt-minh offensive towards the south of the Mountain Plateaux. The situation continued to get worse during June and July, after the end of Atlante, in the strict sense. This thesis emphasizes on lessons learned from these operations of pacification : civilians and the military have to cooperate closely in accordance to co-ordinated plans ; you cannot improvise forces just like that, and it is hazardous to build plans based upon fragile, poorly supervised and under-trained units. Pacification is a course of action belonging to wartime. To achieve their goals, units have to act with a very favourable balance of power (from 15 to 20 vs. 1)

Wutikuer, Otkur. "Fabrication and Characterization of 4H-SiC MOS Capacitors with Different Dielectric Layer Treatments." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Halvledarmaterial, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-144984.

Full text
Abstract:
4H-SiC based Metal-Oxide Semiconductor(MOS) capacitors are promising key components for next generation power devices. For high frequency power applications, however, there is a major drawback of this type of devices, i.e. they have low inversion channel mobility that consequently affects the switching operation in MOS Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). Carbon clusters or excess carbon atoms in the interface between the dielectric layer and SiC is commonly considered to be the carrier trapping and scattering centers that lower the carrier channel mobility. Based on the previous work in the research group, a new fabrication process for forming the dielectric layer with a lower density of the trap states is investigated. The process consists of standard semiconductor cleaning, pre-treatments, pre-oxidation, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and post oxidation annealing. I-V measurements of the dielectric strength showed that the resulting layers can sustain proper working condition under an electric field of at least 5MV/cm. C-V characteristics measurements provided the evidence that the proposed method can effectively reduce the interfacial states, which are main culprit for a large flat band voltage shift of C-V characteristics, in particular under annealing at 900°C in nitrogen atmosphere.

Dawson, Thomas. "Red Lines & Hockey Sticks : A discourse analysis of the IPCC’s visual cultureand climate science (mis)communication." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för ABM, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-445887.

Abstract:
Within the climate science research community there exists an overwhelming consensus on the question of climate change. The scientific literature supports the broad conclusion that the Earth’s climate is changing, that this change is driven by human factors (anthropogenic), and that the environmental consequences could be severe. While a strong consensus exists in the climate science community, this is not reflected in the wider public or among policymakers, where sceptical attitudes towards anthropogenic climate change is much more prevalent. This discrepancy in the perception of the urgency of the problem of climate change is an alarming trend and likely a result of a failure of science communication, which is the topic of this thesis. This paper analyses the visual culture of climate change, with specific focus on the data visualisations comprised within the IPCC assessment reports. The visual aspects of the reports were chosen because of the prioritisation images often receive within scientific communication and for their quality as immutable mobiles that can transition between different media more easily than text. The IPCC is the central institutional authority in the climate science visual discourse, and its assessment reports, therefore, are the site of this discourse analysis. The analysis tracks the development and variations in the IPCC’s visual culture, investigates in detail the use of colour and the visual form of the “Hockey Stick” graph. This work is undertaken to better understand the state of the art of climate science data visualisation, in an effort to suggest the best way forward to bridge the knowledge gap between the scientific community and the public on this important issue. The thesis concludes that a greater emphasis on the information aesthetics of their data visualisations could benefit the IPCC’s pedagogical reach, but that it may also be argued that it is not the IPCC’s role in climate change discourse to produce the most visually persuasive images. That they exist as a tone-setting institution that provides authority to entities that are better geared towards wider communication, such as journalism and activism.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The public-sector organizations have been in limelight for research work about the implementation of various quality management approaches with the evolution of process management ideology into this sector. The awareness among the citizens regarding their rights and demand for qualitative service has been increased which led to the focus on the quality management approaches like Six Sigma and Lean. The public-sector organizations such as municipalities, health care, social administrators and others are not driven by profits unlike private sectors making it complex to implement these approaches. This led to the purpose of the thesis to research on proposing a process improvement strategy for increased customer satisfaction in the public sector. Seven tools from Lean and Six Sigma methodologies have been chosen to propose the strategy and they are – Process Mapping, Voice of the Customer, Critical to Quality, Cause & Effect Analysis, 5 Why’s, Benchmarking and Standardization. To execute this research, a qualitative case study methodology has been conducted at MoS department of Linköping Municipality on one of their ground process – customer request handling process. The research questions were designed to understand how to map the process, the customer orientation and process efficiency specific to the case and finally grasp the effectiveness of the selected tools for public sector. Various data sources were collected for this study. The empirical findings led to interesting analysis and discussion on the case study in relation to the previous literatures reviewed in this area. Moreover, the usefulness of these tools has been clearly identified and the strategy for process improvements has been proposed. From the overall discussion, major conclusions on the thesis work have been made with respect to the research questions. Firstly, while mapping the process it is important to consider the customer perspective and identify the process steps which lead to customer satisfaction. Further, communication with the customers and considering their feedback for future improvements is identified to be vital. Finally, the selected tools contribute majorly for the process improvements in public sector where the numerical data availability is limited and the importance of the strategic order for the tools has been highlighted. Key Words: Process Improvements, Six Sigma, Lean, Public Sector, Municipal Organizations, Customer Orientation, Customer Satisfaction.

Abstract:
The use of geomaterials different from flint in Early and Middle Paleolithic. Economical technical and functional choices after the study of two sites : Sainte-Anne I (Haute-Loire, France) (MIS 5-7) and Notarchirico (Basilicata, Italy) (MIS 14-17).We tried to answer the question: has the variability of raw materials (from petrographical characteristics and morphological aspects) influenced prehistoric knappers during the production both in time and space? The creation and use of specific descriptive files for each category of objects allowed us to analyze the technical characteristics of the products and to select the variables that played a major role in the assessment of needs at the base of the lithic production. Critical analysis of the litho-stratigraphic contexts and consideration of technical, technological or chronological diversity allows to reconsider the paradigms underlying the differentiation of the techniques: products façonnage (double sided, ébauche), Levallois production system, discoid production system. These terms have for too long concealed the variability of the characters in Paleolithic lithic production. We have now to reconsider the purposes of lithic studies and to aim to decipher the plurality of individuals and palaeolithic societies behaviours

Abstract:
Background: The Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale is a frequently used assessment tool world wide in clinics in care of people with Parkinson’s disease. In 2001, the assessment tool were reviewed and revised, which was titled Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale. Part III of MDS-UPDRS aims to investigate motor symptoms and is considered important in, among other things, physiotherapists' investigation, and as evaluation after treatment. Currently, a Swedish validated translation of Part III is lacking. Aim: The aim of this study is to translate part III of MDS-UPDRS from english to swedish, and then analyze content validity for the swedish version. Method: The translation was done with the use of forward translation, backward translation and the content validity was analyzed with Content Validity Index (CVI). The translation were analyzed in two rounds, with help by five individual proficient to the area. The content validity were set by following domains and reference values: I-CVI (0,80), S-CVI/AVE (0,90) and SCVI/UA (0,80). Results: After two rounds, 20 questions out of 24 reached an I-CVI of 1,0. The remaining four questions reached an I-CVI of 0,80. The values of S-CVI/AVE and S-CVI/UA were 0,97 and 0,83 which meant that it exceeded the set reference values. The integer scale can be considered valid based on the reference values on S-CVI/AVE and S-CVI/UA. Conclusion: The integer translated version of MDS-UPDRS part III can be considered valid.

Kartal, Elcin. "Metamodeling Complex Systems Using Linear And Nonlinear Regression Methods." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12608930/index.pdf.

Abstract:
Metamodeling is a very popular approach for the approximation of complex systems. Metamodeling techniques can be categorized according to the type of regression method employed as linear and nonlinear models. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is an example of linear regression. In classical RSM metamodels, parameters are estimated using the Least Squares (LS) Method. Robust regression techniques, such as Least Absolute Deviation (LAD) and M-regression, are also considered in this study due to the outliers existing in data sets. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) are examples for non-linear regression technique. In this thesis these two nonlinear metamodeling techniques are constructed and their performances are compared with the performances of linear models.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis engages the ideological ambivalence about the nineteenth-century middle-class domestic that emerged at mid-century by focusing on the non-canonical British and Californian writing of a fairly unknown but prolific author, Catherine Hubback, Jane Austen’s niece. It explores the tension between ideology and practice in Hubback’s writing, and argues that her work simultaneously challenges and endorses the ideal of domesticity. To the extent that it challenges this ideal, Hubback’s fiction, in its representation of domestic practice, negotiates class and gender ideologies that play out in the middle-class home. The thesis also traces how her endorsement of middle-class domesticity became more pronounced in the story and letters she wrote after her emigration to California, taking the form of overt criticism of American femininity and domesticity. Hubback’s concern with women’s position in relation to law and marriage is read within the context of developments in the genre of domestic fiction. My close reading of four novels – The Younger Sister, May and December: A Tale of Wedded Life, The Wife’s Sister; or, The Forbidden Marriage and Malvern; or, The Three Marriages – examines Hubback’s representation of marital and domestic configurations that are consistently viewed in relation to the social and legal position of women. The novels explore alternative options for women’s lives illustrated by their negotiation of the constraints of middle-class womanhood on their own terms; in marriage, or by choosing not to marry. Similarly, my discussion of Victorian masculinity in Hubback’s fiction focuses on the concern with moral and industrious middle-class manhood that establishes middle-class values as the definition of proper Englishness. As part of this discussion, I demonstrate how Hubback’s fiction reworks middle-class masculinity in order to establish a model for marriage that ensures domestic stability and ultimately the order of the English nation. In the final chapter of this thesis, I continue my exploration of Englishness and domestic ideology by reading Hubback’s short story and letters from California. In contrast to the ideological ambivalence registered in the novels, these texts more overtly subscribe to middle-class English values. My reading of Hubback’s work for this thesis thus aims to contribute to an understanding of the complex interrelation between ideology, domestic practice and literature in the nineteenth-century.
My bestudering van vier romans – The Younger Sister, May and December: A Tale of Wedded Life, The Wife’s Sister; or, The Forbidden Marriage en Malvern; or, The Three Marriages – ondersoek Hubback se voorstelling van konfigurasies in die huwelik en in die huishouding wat deurgaans beskou word ten opsigte van die sosiale en wetlike posisie van vroue.

Abstract:
Longitudinal growth of long bone occurs at growth plates by a process called endochondral ossification. Endochondral ossification is affected by both biological and mechanical factors. This thesis focuses on the mechanical modulation of femoral bone growth occurring at the proximal growth plate, using mechanobiological theories reported in the literature. Finite element analysis was used to simulate bone growth. The first study analyzed the effect of subject-specific growth plate geometry over simplified growth plate geometry in numerical prediction of bone growth tendency. Subject-specific femur finite element model was constructed from magnetic resonance images of one able- bodied child. Gait kinematics and kinetics were acquired from motion analysis and analyzed further in musculoskeletal modelling to determine muscle and joint contact forces. These were used to determine loading on the femur in finite element analysis. The growth rate was computed based on a mechanobiological theory proposed by Carter and Wong, and a growth model in the principal stress direction was introduced. Our findings support the use of subject- specific geometry and of the principal stress growth direction in prediction of bone growth. The second study aimed to illustrate how different muscle groups’ activation during gait affects proximal femoral growth tendency in able-bodied children. Subject-specific femur models were used. Gait kinematics and kinetics were acquired for 3 able-bodied children, and muscle and joint contact forces were determined, similar to the first study. The contribution of different muscle groups to hip contact force was also determined. Finite element analysis was performed to compute the specific growth rate and growth direction due to individual muscle groups. The simulated growth model indicated that gait loading tends to reduce neck shaft angle and femoral anteversion during growth. The muscle groups that contributes most and least to growth rate were hip abductors and hip adductors, respectively. All muscle groups’ activation tended to reduce the neck shaft and femoral anteversion angles, except hip extensors and adductors which showed a tendency to increase the femoral anteversion. The third study’s aim was to understand the influence of different physical activities on proximal femoral growth tendency. Hip contact force orientation was varied to represent reported forces from a number of physical activities. The findings of this study showed that all studied physical activities tend to reduce the neck shaft angle and anteversion, which corresponds to the femur’s natural course during normal growth. The aim of the fourth study was to study the hypothesis that loading in the absence of physical activity, i.e. static loading, can have an adverse effect on bone growth. A subject-specific model was used and growth plate was modeled as a poroelastic material in finite element analysis. Prendergast’s indicators for bone growth was used to analyse the bone growth behavior. The results showed that tendency of bone growth rate decreases over a long duration of static loading. The study also showed that static sitting is less detrimental than static standing for predicted cartilage-to-bone differentiation likelihood, due to the lower magnitude of hip contact force. The prediction of growth using finite element analysis on experimental gait data and person- specific femur geometry, based on mechanobiological theories of bone growth, offers a biomechanical foundation for better understanding and prediction of bone growth-related deformity problems in growing children. It can ultimately help in treatment planning or physical activity guidelines in children at risk at developing a femur or hip deformity.

Abstract:
There are many clinical situations where magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is preferable over other imaging modalities, while the major disadvantage is the relatively long scan time. Due to limited resources, this means that not all patients can be offered an MRI scan, even though it could provide crucial information. It can even be deemed unsafe for a critically ill patient to undergo the examination. In MRI, there is a trade-off between resolution, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the time spent gathering data. When time is of utmost importance, we seek other methods to increase the resolution while preserving SNR and imaging time. In this work, I have studied one of the most promising methods for this task. Namely, constructing super-resolution algorithms to learn the mapping from a low resolution image to a high resolution image using convolutional neural networks. More specifically, I constructed networks capable of transferring high frequency (HF) content, responsible for details in an image, from one kind of image to another. In this context, contrast or weight is used to describe what kind of image we look at. This work only explores the possibility of transferring HF content from T1-weighted images, which can be obtained quite quickly, to T2-weighted images, which would take much longer for similar quality. By doing so, the hope is to contribute to increased efficacy of MRI, and reduce the problems associated with the long scan times. At first, a relatively simple network was implemented to show that transferring HF content between contrasts is possible, as a proof of concept. Next, a much more complex network was proposed, to successfully increase the resolution of MR images better than the commonly used bicubic interpolation method. This is a conclusion drawn from a test where 12 participants were asked to rate the two methods (p=0.0016) Both visual comparisons and quality measures, such as PSNR and SSIM, indicate that the proposed network outperforms a similar network that only utilizes images of one contrast. This suggests that HF content was successfully transferred between images of different contrasts, which improves the reconstruction process. Thus, it could be argued that the proposed multi-contrast model could decrease scan time even further than what its single-contrast counterpart would. Hence, this way of performing multi-contrast super-resolution has the potential to increase the efficacy of MRI.

Abstract:
In the chemistry branch of science is often a chromatograph usedto separate and purify substances in a solution. In achromatograph, different detectors are used to analyse the samplesconstituents. Some detectors destroy the sample during analysis.Because it is undesirable to destroy the entire flow of sample, asmall mass is transferred to a second flow by a flow splitter. Inthis report, four principles to divert a small mass from one flowto another are developed and evaluated. The basic principles todivert the flows is tested and principal mock-ups are designed andmanufactured. A brief survey of the market is conducted and aproblem related to flow spitting is investigated. The problem isthe influence on yield through a chromatograph due to flowretaining. Designing and testing of different retaining systems isalso included in this report. All four initial principles proved to be plausible splittingtechniques. However, only two principles appeared to be feasiblefor direct implementation in devices comparable withchromatographs. One of the less feasible principle is covered byseveral patents. The other is difficult to manufacture in order tomeet the strict requirements associated with e.g. chromatographs. The testing of different retaining systems showed that smallertube inner diameter and how the tube is winded can reduce theretaining system influence on the yield significantly. The splitting techniques in this report are all feasible splittingtechniques, and the report can be used as a solid foundation fordevelopment future laboratory instruments.
Bandbreddning studerades således i olika formerav flödesfördröjningssystem.

Hedman, Karolina. "Differences in tumor volume for treated glioblastoma patients examined with 18F-fluorothymidine PET and contrast-enhanced MRI." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för fysik, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-173693.

Abstract:
Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and malignant primary brain tumor. It is a rapidly progressing tumor that infiltrates the adjacent healthy brain tissue and is difficult to treat. Despite modern treatment including surgical resection followed by radiochemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, the outcome remains poor. The median overall survival is 10-12 months. Neuroimaging is the most important diagnostic tool in the assessment of GBMs and the current imaging standard is contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Positron emission tomography (PET) has been recommended as a complementary imaging modality. PET provides additional information to MRI, in biological behavior and aggressiveness of the tumor. This study aims to investigate if the combination of PET and MRI can improve the diagnostic assessment of these tumors. Patients and methods: In this study, 22 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria, diagnosed with GBM, and participated in all four 18F-fluorothymidine (FLT)-PET/MR examinations. FLT-PET/MR examinations were performed preoperative (baseline), before the start of the oncological therapy, at two and six weeks into therapy. Optimization of an adaptive thresholding algorithm, a batch processing pipeline, and image feature extraction algorithms were developed and implemented in MATLAB and the analyzing tool imlook4d. Results: There was a significant difference in radiochemotherapy treatment response between long-term and short-term survivors’ tumor volume in MRI (p<0.05), and marginally significant (p<0.10) for maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), PET tumor volume, and total lesion activity (TLA). Preoperative short-term survivors had on average larger tumor volume, higher SUV, and total lesion activity (TLA). The overall trend seen was that long-term survivors had a better treatment response in both MRI and PET than short-term survivors.  During radiochemotherapy, long-term survivors displayed shrinking MR tumor volume after two weeks, and almost no remaining tumor volume was left after six weeks; the short-term survivors display marginal tumor volume reduction during radiochemotherapy. In PET, long-term survivors mean tumor volumes start to decrease two weeks into radiochemotherapy. Short-term survivors do not show any PET volume reduction two and six weeks into radiochemotherapy. For patients with more or less than 200 days progression-free survival, PET volume and TLA were significantly different, and MR volume only marginally significant, suggesting that PET possibly could have added value. Conclusion: The combination of PET and MRI can be used to predict radiochemotherapy response between two and six weeks, predicting overall survival and progression-free survival using MR and PET volume, SUVmax, and TLA. This study is limited by small sample size and further research with greater number of participants is recommended.

Abstract:
Cardinal Richelieu is traditionally accredited with defeating the power of the grands, the upper echelon of the French nobility, as part of his supposedly successful project for monarchical absolutism. Modern historians have recast Richelieu as a nobleman of his time, who advanced himself within the social and political hierarchies through marriage alliances and patronage. He therefore worked hard to forge alliances with the grands rather than trying to destroy them. Yet his ministry was riven by persistent noble conspiracies and rebellions, which have gone largely without systematic investigation. This study examines the nature and causes of that unrest during Richelieu’s final six years, offering a radical re-assessment of the opposition and the politics of the period. Noble conspiracy was not just a by-product of government by a first minister, but reflected the factional nature of Richelieu’s approach. Factional rivalry was exacerbated by the emergence, after 1638, of a struggle for the anticipated regency. After this, Richelieu took a more hostile approach to his adversaries, forcing them to adopt strong countermeasures in order to preserve their positions. Richelieu’s opponents were surprisingly successful in asserting their independence. As well as enjoying widespread domestic support, they allied with the Habsburg powers to engineer military rebellion, posing a major threat to the Cardinal and undermining the war effort against Spain. The Spanish set their stall out for a long-term war, expecting that Richelieu’s opponents would eventually gain power and negotiate peace on more flexible terms. The ability of the grands to re-assert themselves was still a dominant characteristic of French politics. Richelieu’s legacy, on his death in 1642, was a highly volatile political situation in which success was still a long way off for France. These findings suggest the catalytic impact of Habsburg power on France’s internal divisions, which should consequently be seen as integral to the forging of the ancien régime.

he main proposal of this research has been connecting the ancient chivalry plots with a group of modern Spanish novels, which present interesting and similar points of view, however important differences. It is pretended searching how the materials have been treated in similar ways, as well as how it has been looked for the narrative strategies that have allowed creating singular novels. Historical and lyrical novels, bildungsroman, even tales, will have influenced in these last ones along the past twentieth century.

Abstract:
The smartphone is omnipresent and is cherished and held close by people. It allows for constant connection within a digitally connected society, as well as for many other purposes such as leisure activity or informational purpose. Within the Information Systems studies deeper investigation is required as to what impact this “taken – for – granted” mobile access to information and mobile apps has for individuals and society and if a “technological addiction”can be developed when using the smartphone for everything during the day on such a constant basis. The aim of this study was to understand the role of the smartphone in society and to shed light on this unclear relationship between the constant use of a smartphone and its development towards an addictive quality. To reach a conclusion, in depth – interviews were conducted with participants about their relationship to the smartphone and their smartphone use based on questions derived from literature on mobile communication technologies and the types of digital addictions existing. The results are that the smartphone is a device that seamlessly integrates into our daily lives in that we unconsciously use it as a tool to make our daily tasks more manageable, and enjoyable. It also supports us in getting better organized, to be in constant touch with family and friends remotely, and to be more mobile which is a useful ability in today’s mobility driven society. Smartphones have been found to inhabit a relatively low potential to addiction. Traits of voluntary behaviour, habitual behaviour, and mandatory behaviour of smartphone use have been found. All of these behaviours are not considered a true addiction. In the end, it seems that the increase of smartphone use is mainly due to the way we communicate nowadays digitally, and the shift in how we relate to our social peers using digital means.

Sellwood, Jane Leslie. "Telling "I"'s: figuring the female subject in linking narratives by Anna Jameson, Sara Jeannette Duncan and Mavis Gallant." Thesis, 1995. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/9447.

Abstract:
The linking short narratives explored in this study-- Anna Jameson's Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada, Sara Jeannette Duncan's The Pool In the Desert and Mavis Gallant's Home Truths— employ first-person narrators to both comply with and subvert dominant ideas of the gendered female subject. In addition, these representative linking narrative texts demonstrate that choices to do with form, as well as subject and theme, may both support and subvert the discourses of the time and place in which they are written. My exploration of these three representative texts draws from W.H. New's fragmentation theory of short narratives, Gérard Genette's narrative theory of voice and mood, Paul de Man's problematization of generic distinctions between autobiography and fiction, and Julia Kristeva's theory of the speaking subject as text in process and vice versa. Jameson's Romantic "I" uses the miscellany's flexible form of linking short narratives autobiographically to both reify and recuse nineteenth-century genre conventions of travel narrative and the gendered position of women in Europe and Canada. As the Recusant "I," first person narration in Duncan's quartet of stories figures splits not only between female desire and gender codes, but also between creative imagination and conditions of exile. With a psychopoetics of the unsaid, the Remembering "I" of Gallant's linking narratives figures female subjectivity as a process of both psychology and history. These women-authored linking narratives challenge assumptions that first-person narration is univocal, and therefore problematize distinctions between autobiography and fiction. In their uses of the linking narrative form, they also challenge aesthetic criteria that privilege wholeness and unity— of the novel, for example— in concepts of mimesis dominating representations of reality in their respective periods. These first-person linking narratives use the voice of the "I" subversively, telling the doubled position of the female subject in the discourses of genre and gender.

For enterprise resource planning (ERP) system developers to help their clients (enterprises) obtain of firm resources without constraints of time while facing intense global competition, maximum profits, and even achieve sustainability, they must persistently invest R&D resources to develop effective management functions for information systems to satisfy customer’ needs for management needs or engage in customized projects to provide management functions that conform to customer’ core competitiveness. However, project implementation ultimately implemented depends on several factors, including development cost. In practice, before starting a project, senior project managers or system analysts first estimate its development cost using experience rules. The estimation result provides an important reference for decision makers. Information is lacking during the early phase of project planning. Before the completion of system analysis and design, this weakness generally influences the smoothness of the initial estimation process and may cause an unreasonable or unexpected gap between the estimated and actual development cost. If the estimated development cost of a project exceeds the expected cost or the price that the customer is willing to pay, the probability of the project going ahead is reduced. On the Conversely, if the estimated cost is far significantly below the actual cost, the project will negatively impact firm’ business performance. The software industry significantly differs from general manufacturing in numerous aspects. Development and production costs of software products primarily derive from the investment of human resources. Software is a virtual intelligence product with a customer service orientation. How to estimate project development costs during the early stage of development thus is an important challenge for software developers. This study reviewed literature on cost estimation and mployed information systems recently developed by a large domestic DRP developer as a database. Using multivariate analysis and artificial intelligence techniques, this study analyzed development cases involving this company to develop a cost estimation model for software development projects and compare it with other models, in the hope of estimating project development cost efficiently and accurately. Using the proposed cost estimation model and process, project decision makers or sales departments can rapidly react to initial project cost, increasing their decision making quality, cost estimation speed and accuracy, and also ensuring the project is reasonably profitable.

Housing mortgage is one of the main business functions of financial institutions. During the past few decades, the key factor of approving the loan has mainly focused on the value of mortgage. Credit scoring for housing mortgage has become a very important task as the credit industry can benefit from improving cash flow, insuring credit collections, reducing possible risks and implementing better managerial decisions. More and more attention has been paid to credit scoring, and resulting in many different useful techniques, known as the credit scoring models, have been developed by the banks and researchers in order to solve the problems involved during the credit evaluation process. Generally, two essential linear statistical tools, discriminant analysis and logistic regression, were most commonly applied to construct credit scoring models. However, the above two methods are often been criticized for lack of precision and strong model assumptions. Other credit scoring techniques is needed to conduct credit scoring task when the underlying data pattern is nonlinear. Among these newly adopted techniques, the artificial neural networks (ANNs) has gained serious attention due to its capability to capture subtle and nonlinear functional relationship among variables. However, ANNs has also being criticized for its long training processing time, hard to identify the relative importance of potential independent variables, and certain interpretative difficulties. The objective of the proposed study is to explore the performance of data classification by integrating artificial neural networks with the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) approach. The rationale under the analyses is firstly to use MARS in modeling the classification problem, then the obtained significant variables are used as the input variables of the designed neural networks model. To demonstrate the inclusion of the obtained important variables from MARS would improve the credit scoring accuracy of the networks, credit scoring tasks are performed on one bank housing mortgage dataset. As the results reveal, the proposed integrated approach outperforms the results using discriminant analysis, artificial neural networks, classification and regression tree (CART) and multivariate adaptive regression splines in terms of highest credit scoring accuracies and lowest expected misclassification costs and hence provides an efficient alternative in handling credit scoring problems.
