Abstract:
This contribution represents a short introduction to the African travel notebooks, or ‘Chronicles’, of Mabel Virginia Anna Bent (1847-1929) - wife of the explorer James Theodore Bent (1852-1887) - and some of the resources consulted during research into the publication of these notebooks. What follows is based on a presentation made at the SCOLMA conference, the University of Birmingham, on 2 July 2014.The 19th century is studded with the derring-do of explorers in Africa and elsewhere, but we have relatively few first-hand records of husband-and-wife partnerships. And Mabel and Theodore Bent really were one of the great British travelling partnerships in terms of their results, the distances covered, and the sheer physical efforts involved over a period of nearly twenty years of journeying together between 1880 and 1897. In particular, Theodore's work in today's Zimbabwe made the couple into explorer-celebrities, and accounts of them at travellers’ soirées, or sharing passenger lists with famous names, such as Stanley, are common. The couple regularly feature in the major relevant bibliographies - archaeological, ethnographical, and travel - to this day.

Abstract:
In this article, a follow-up of her 2014 contribution in this journal on Hungarian women’s Holocaust diaries, Vasvári discusses six war diaries from 1944-45, which until recently lay forgotten in archives or in private hands. Two of the diaries are by Jewish victims, Anna, Mrs. Sándor Devényi (referred to in the article by her pseudonym, Margit Stellar, Mrs. József Krauss) and Jenő Lévai, who describe their persecution, while the others are by one cleric, Pius István Zimándi, and by three gentile women of various backgrounds, Dr. Mária Mádi, Klára Szebény, and Mrs. Miklós Horthy. Mádi, who kept the longest diary among all five diarists, from 1941 to 1945, consistently condemned the political situation in Hungary, before and after the Nazi occupation, while Zimándi did not. Szebény wrote only about the period after December 1944, when she and her children were trapped in Buda during the siege of Budapest, and Mrs. Horthy avoided all comment about what happened in Hungary before her family was taken prisoner by the Nazis in November 1944 and subsequently kept under house arrest in Germany.

Abstract:
Several hours before dawn on 5 August 1835, a Washington slave slipped into his mistress’s bedroom, axe in hand. Anna Maria Thornton awoke to see a drunken Arthur, her longtime house slave and the son of her trusted cook and maid, Maria, threatening her with, she believed, murder. Luckily for Mrs. Thornton, Maria was in the room and, “being fortunately awake, seized him & got him out” while her mistress sounded the alarm to the neighbors. Shocked and horrified, Mrs. Thornton recorded in her diary the attack and Arthur’s escape, subsequent capture, and criminal indictment (Thornton, Aug.—Oct. 1835). Some of Washington’s less reputable citizens reacted with hate and violence. In the ensuing days, out-of-work white mechanics gathered at the steps of the city hall, looking for a scapegoat for the disorder Arthur represented. On 12 August the mob turned its wrath on the vulnerable free black community. The “Snow Storm,” named for a victim of its destruction, free black Beverly Snow, was Washington’s most infamous riot. The crowd burned Snow’s restaurant, along with several other symbols of free black success (Werner 1986: 243–45; Curry 1981: 99–100).

Abstract:
Now Church History’, wrote John Henry Newman in 1843, ‘is made up of these three elements—miracles, monkery, Popery’, so that anyone sympathetic to the subject must sympathize with these. Much the same, however, could be said of Christian art. The young Southey on a visit to Madrid stood incredulous before a series of paintings depicting the life of St Francis. ‘I do not remember ever to have been so gready astonished’, he recalled. ‘“Do they really believe all this, Sir?” said I to my companion. “Yes, and a great deal more of the same kind”, was. the reply.’ The paradox was that works of genius served the ends of a drivelling superstition, a dilemma resolved in the 1830s by the young Augustus Pugin, who decided that the creation of decent Christian architecture presupposed the profession of Catholic Christianity. The old Protestant hostility to graven images was in part a revulsion from that idolatrous popish veneration of the Virgin and saints which had inspired frescos, statues, and altar-pieces in churches and monasteries throughout Catholic Europe; but what on earth did a modern educated Protestant make of the endless Madonnas, monks, and miracles adorning the buildings which he was expected as a man of cultivation to admire? At the very least, he required a sympathetic instruction in the meaning of the iconography before his eyes, and some guidance about its relation to the rest of what he believed. The great intermediary in this process was Ruskin; but there was at least one odier interpreter of Catholic art celebrated in her day, Mrs Anna Brownell Jameson, whose most popular works, Sacred and Legendary Art, Legends of the Monastic Orders, and Legends of the Madonna, told the Englishman what he could safely think and feel amid the alien aesthetic allurements of Catholicism.

I am writing to provide further information in response to inquiries about my recent article on performance issues in Gorecki's music (Tempo 211). The symposium I referred to, at which the composer was present, was titled ‘The Gorecki Phenomenon’, and, in addition to my own, included presentations by Adrian Thomas, Luke Howard, David Kopplin, Mark Swed, and Maria Anna Harley, who organized and chaired the event (and translated the commentaries of Mr Gorecki, who had much to say). This session, along with entire ‘Gorecki Autumn’ at the University of Southern California, was organized to celebrate the endowement of the Directorship of the Polish Music Reference Center by Dr Stefan and Mrs Wanda Wilk, founders of this important resource on Polish music in North America (the website can be consulted at http://www.usc.edu/dept/polishmusic/). Abstract:
Background:bDMARDs are among the most effective therapies in the management of inflammatory arthritides, but they are associated with potentially severe adverse events (AEs), particularly infection. Tapering strategies of bDMARDs for patients in remission/low disease activity (R/LDA) have demonstrated comparable efficacy to standard-dose treatments, but their safety profile has not been studied yet. Objectives:To compare the number and the causes of hospital admissions in RA patients in R/LDA continuing or tapering bDMARDs.Methods:Consecutive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) evaluated between 2011 and 2017, were assigned, based on treating physician’s discretion, to continue the standard dose (STD) of bDMARDs or to undergo a predetermined tapering strategy (TAP), after being in R/LDA for two consecutive visits at least 3 months apart. Down-titration of bDMARDs was obtained by a stepwise increase of the dosing interval to achieve a reduction of about 30% (e.g. administration of etanercept every 10 days instead of weekly). Demographic, clinical data and concomitant treatments were retrospectively retrieved from the electronic charts of the outpatient clinics. Information about hospital admissions, including main diagnosis, period and duration of hospitalization, and death were retrieved from the Regional Healthcare System Database. For the STD group, the observation period started with the occurrence of remission and finished with one of these events: loss of remission, switch to another bDMARD, withdrawal of the bDMARD, severe AE, death, end of the study period in (December 2017). For the TAP group, the observation period started with tapering onset and finished with one of these events: reduction of the dosing interval due to either a relapse (according to a DAS28 increase) or to a subjective, symptomatic relapse (according to the patient’s definition), switch to another bDMARD, withdrawal of the bDMARD, severe AE, death, end of the study period in (December 2017).Results:81 patients were included, of whom 40 underwent TAP. Demographic, clinical and treatment data are shown in table 1. Baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups, except for the number of previous bDMARDs before observational period entry that was slightly higher in the STD group (STD 1.0±0.9 versus TAP 0.5±0.8, P=0.11).Table 1.Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients in remission or low disease activity.NO TAPERING(n=41)TAPERING(n=40)p valueMean age (yrs)57±1158±130.563Mean disease duration (yrs)12±912±70.897Starting bDMARD to tapering/monitoring (months)52±4567±410.128Mean monitoring period (months)22±2419±230.632Taking sDMARD at any time ((n (%))40 (98%)37 (92%)0.359Taking glucocorticoids29 (71%)28 (70%)0.999Mean prednisone dose (mg/day)2.5±2.92.1±2.70.527DAS28 at the time of tapering or first LDA/REM2.3±0.82.3±0.90.863Previous bDMARDs >1 (n (%))10 (24.4%)4 (10%)0.140In the STD group, 14 hospital admissions occurred, while in the TAP group there were 7 admissions (p=0.128). Abstract:
This paper poses a parallel analysis of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway and Jean Rhys’s Voyage in the Dark, two novels set in London around the First World War that complement one another with regard to representation of women in the city. In focus are Woolf’s and Rhys’s heroines who belong different social classes. With a view to producing a fuller picture of the London strata of the time, the essay concentrates on a dual front: it examines the position the protagonists enjoy in respect to their gender as well as in respect to their social status. While Rhys’s Anna is a young woman from a distant colony, that is an outsider with no permanent residence in London, Woolf’s Clarissa Dalloway, however seemingly privileged, is greatly disadvantaged by her restricted experience of the metropolis. The essay argues that in these two novels London is a source of double marginalisation – a city unjust to the colonial subjects but unjust to women of all strata. As a theoretical background, the essay uses the concept of gendered geographies of power, which are supposed to help us reveal how different power structures affect the cityscape on both macro and micro level.

Abstract:
Immediately before and shortly after the collapse of socialism in 1989, a large number of private publishing houses were founded in Hungary. Some of them began their career by republishing the novels of selected popular Hungarian women writers of the preWorld War II era that had been banned following the Soviet occupation of the country in 1945. The lack of comprehensive literary criticism on the works of women authors drove the new publishers to rely on the so-called “oral canon” of collective memory, which had saved some of their names from oblivion. To grab the attention of prospective readers, the books selected for publication were provided with modern book cover designs, reflecting new, but still patriarchal values. After a brief overview of how prewar literature was censored after 1945, focusing on the editors’ inevitable reinterpretation of the writings of Renée Erdős, Mrs. Kosáry Lola Réz, and Anna Tutsek through book cover designs, Kádár aims in this paper to survey in what ways and how successfully the re-editions of the novels by women writers have contributed to their inclusion in the literary canon since 1989.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of writings and illustrative material by Canadian travel writers Anna Jameson, Mina Hubbard, and Margaret Laurence, that attempts to reconcile the masculinist focus of postcolonial criticism and the charges of cultural imperialism levied against feminist criticism with the role postcolonial and feminist theories play in understanding women's travel narratives. I argue that Jameson's 1838 Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada, Hubbard's 1908 A Woman's Way through Unknown Labrador, and Laurence's 1963 The Prophet's Camel Bell provide maps of the political, cultural, and physical features of the areas through which the women travelled, and of their own social and cultural positions. Their mapping is also done through more graphic media---including Hubbard's cartographic work, Hubbard's and Laurence's photographs, and Jameson's unpublished sketches---which reflect and complicate the written negotiations of gender and imperialism in which the three women engage.
Because my aim is to reconcile theoretical contradictions, I examine in detail books that clearly dramatize colonialist or anti-imperialist approaches and considerations or exemplifications of issues of gender. Not surprisingly, the three writers draw very different maps of those subjects, as a function of their disparate geographical and historical contexts. This study reveals, however, that the maps themselves are drawn with similar tools, which include an anti-racist philosophy and an acute awareness of women's position in their own and the visited societies. Thus Jameson makes philosophical connections between mid-nineteenth-century feminist and anti-racist theoretical approaches; Hubbard provides insights into an early twentieth-century woman traveller's relationship to First Nations men who have both more and less power than she; and Laurence serves as a witness to and astute reporter on oppression of mid-twentieth century women by specific colonial and patriarchal forces.

Carlsson, Ella. "Mars : plasma environment and surface." Doctoral thesis, Luleå, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-16797.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis treats parts of the solar wind interaction with the Martian atmosphere and the water-related features known as gullies. The composition of the escaping plasma at Mars has been investigated in an analysis of data from the IMA sensor, which is a part of the ASPERA-3 instrument suit onboard the European satellite Mars Express. The goal of the investigation is to determine if there are any high abundances of escaping ion species incorporating carbon, such as in CO_2^+ . The most abundant ion species was found to be O^+ and O_2^+, followed by CO_2^+. The following ratios were identifed: CO_2^+/O^+ = 0:2 and O_2^+ /O^+ = 0:9. The escaping plasma, in form of ion beam events, has also been correlated to the magnetic anomalies found on the surface, where no clear association was found. Similar ion beams have also been detected on Venus, which does not have any crustal magnetic fields, and hence the fields are not required for the formation process of the beams. The ion beams' dependence of the direction of the solar wind convection electric field has also been studied, where a correlation was found, suggesting that the ion beams are accelerated by this field. The studies mentioned above are important in order to understand the evolution of Mars and its atmosphere, as well as plasma acceleration processes at non-magnetized planetary bodies. On 5 December 2006 the ASPERA instruments of both Venus Express and Mars Express detected a large enhancement in their respective background count level. These readings are associated with events of SEPs (Solar Energetic Particles), which are believed to be coupled with the CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejection) identified 43 ¡ 67 hours after the SEPs. The CMEs occurred on the far side of the sun (with respect to the locations of Venus and Mars), which indicates that these events can a®ect the space weather in areas situated 90 degrees in both azimuthal directions in the heliosphere with respect to the target. During this event the heavy ion outflow from the atmosphere of Mars increased by one order of magnitude, suggesting that EUV flux levels significantly affect the atmospheric loss from unmagnetized bodies. The gully formations have been investigated with data from the MOC, MOLA and TES instruments onboard the satellite Mars Global Surveyor. The features suggest that there has been fluvial erosion on the surface of Mars. The shallow and deep aquifer models remain the most plausible formation theories. Gully formation processes are important to understand since their eroding agent may be liquid water.

Tampu, Iulian Emil. "Morphological characterization of neural tissue microstructure using the orientationally-averaged diffusion MRI signal." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Avdelningen för medicinsk teknik, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-158153.

Full text
Abstract:
Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is a powerful tool for thecharacterisation of neural tissue microstructural features. The role of neural projectioncurvature on the diffusion signal was recently studied for three temporal regimes of the diffusion pulse sequence in search for a description of the different decay trends in the orientationally-averaged diffusion signal reported in in vivo human studies. This work experimentally investigates the effects of neural projection curvedness in one of these regimes, namely the short diffusion time regime. Multi-shell diffusion MRI acquisitions on fixed rat spinal cord were performed using a custom number of diffusion gradient directions on a vertical bore pre-clinical MRI scanner capable of generating 3000 mT/m. Diffusion was probed in three different q-values ranges [450, 970], [600, 1400] and [1500, 1750] mm-1 using diffusion pulse durations of 1.4,2 and 2.5ms, respectively. Noise correction was performed on the diffusion data and the orientationally-averaged signal was computed for each shell using a weighted mean. The signal from selected regions in the sample was then fitted to a power law. Results show that gray matter areas exhibit a signal reduction with variable decay trends in the range of diffusion sensitivity values used here. This suggests that gray matter microstructure features are pictured by the orientationally-averaged signal in the high diffusion sensitivity regime and, as theoretically suggested, neurite curvature might play a role in characterizing the signal decay. These preliminary results may prove useful in the development of models for the interpretation of the diffusion signal and the design of acquisition strategies that aim to study the high diffusion sensitivity regime.

Abstract:
Integral part of the French Plan Navarre, the operation Atlante was conducted by the French and Vietnamese forces during the first half of 1954, against the Lien Khu V (a Vietminh stronghold established in Annam since the end of the WW II). France expected to take the initiative in the south of the 16th parallel in supporting the first massive involvement of the new Vietnamese Armed Forces. France wanted to prove the credibility of a Vietnamese Government acting in the framework of the French Union. Aréthuse, the first phase of the operation, achieved the conquest and the pacification of the Phu Yen, the first Vietminh province. The second phase, Axelle, took place during the battle of Dien Bien Phu and the beginning of the negotiations in Geneva, forcing the troops to carry out fierce fighting in order to block a robust Viêt-minh offensive towards the south of the Mountain Plateaux. The situation continued to get worse during June and July, after the end of Atlante, in the strict sense. This thesis emphasizes on lessons learned from these operations of pacification : civilians and the military have to cooperate closely in accordance to co-ordinated plans ; you cannot improvise forces just like that, and it is hazardous to build plans based upon fragile, poorly supervised and under-trained units. Pacification is a course of action belonging to wartime. To achieve their goals, units have to act with a very favourable balance of power (from 15 to 20 vs. 1)

Wutikuer, Otkur. "Fabrication and Characterization of 4H-SiC MOS Capacitors with Different Dielectric Layer Treatments." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Halvledarmaterial, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-144984.

Full text
Abstract:
4H-SiC based Metal-Oxide Semiconductor(MOS) capacitors are promising key components for next generation power devices. For high frequency power applications, however, there is a major drawback of this type of devices, i.e. they have low inversion channel mobility that consequently affects the switching operation in MOS Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). Carbon clusters or excess carbon atoms in the interface between the dielectric layer and SiC is commonly considered to be the carrier trapping and scattering centers that lower the carrier channel mobility. Based on the previous work in the research group, a new fabrication process for forming the dielectric layer with a lower density of the trap states is investigated. The process consists of standard semiconductor cleaning, pre-treatments, pre-oxidation, plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and post oxidation annealing. I-V measurements of the dielectric strength showed that the resulting layers can sustain proper working condition under an electric field of at least 5MV/cm. C-V characteristics measurements provided the evidence that the proposed method can effectively reduce the interfacial states, which are main culprit for a large flat band voltage shift of C-V characteristics, in particular under annealing at 900°C in nitrogen atmosphere.

Abstract:
AbstractThe cognitive framework of conceptual spaces proposes to represent concepts as regions in psychological similarity spaces. These similarity spaces are typically obtained through multidimensional scaling (MDS), which converts human dissimilarity ratings for a fixed set of stimuli into a spatial representation. One can distinguish metric MDS (which assumes that the dissimilarity ratings are interval or ratio scaled) from nonmetric MDS (which only assumes an ordinal scale). In our first study, we show that despite its additional assumptions, metric MDS does not necessarily yield better solutions than nonmetric MDS. In this chapter, we furthermore propose to learn a mapping from raw stimuli into the similarity space using artificial neural networks (ANNs) in order to generalize the similarity space to unseen inputs. In our second study, we show that a linear regression from the activation vectors of a convolutional ANN to similarity spaces obtained by MDS can be successful and that the results are sensitive to the number of dimensions of the similarity space.

Abstract:
AbstractInflammation is one underlying contributing factor in the pathology of acute and chronic kidney disorders. Phagocytes such as monocytes, neutrophils and dendritic cells are considered to play a deleterious role in the progression of kidney disease but may also contribute to organ homeostasis. The kidney is a target of life-threatening autoimmune disorders such as the antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV). Neutrophils and monocytes express ANCA antigens and play an important role in the pathogenesis of AAV. Noninvasive in vivo methods that can quantify the distribution of inflammatory cells in the kidney as well as other organs in vivo would be vital to identify the causality and significance of inflammation during disease progression. Here we describe an noninvasive technique to study renal inflammation in rodents in vivo using fluorine (19F) MRI. In this protocol we chose a murine ANCA-AAV model of renal inflammation and made use of nanoparticles prepared from perfluoro-5-crown-15-ether (PFCE) for renal 19F MRI.This chapter is based upon work from the COST Action PARENCHIMA, a community-driven network funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) program of the European Union, which aims to improve the reproducibility and standardization of renal MRI biomarkers. This experimental protocol chapter is complemented by two separate chapters describing the basic concept and data analysis.

Abstract:
AbstractThe impacts of climate change are already being felt, not only in terms of increase in temperature but also in respect of inadequate water availability. The Mkomazi River Basins (MRB) of the KwaZulu-Natal region, South Africa serves as major source of water and thus a mainstay of livelihood for millions of people living downstream. It is in this context that the study investigates water flows abstraction from headwaters to floodplains and how the water resources are been impacted by seasonal climate variability. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) pattern classifier was utilized for the seasonal classification and subsequence hydrological flow regime prediction between the upstream–downstream anomalies. The ANN input hydroclimatic data analysis results covering the period 2008–2015 provides a likelihood forecast of high, near-median, or low streamflow. The results show that monthly mean water yield range is 28.6–36.0 m3/s over the Basin with a coefficient of correlation (CC) values of 0.75 at the validation stage. The yearly flow regime exhibits considerable changes with different magnitudes and patterns of increase and decrease in the climatic variables. No doubt, added activities and processes such as land-use change and managerial policies in upstream areas affect the spatial and temporal distribution of available water resources to downstream regions. The study has evolved an artificial neuron system thinking from conjunctive streamflow prediction toward sustainable water allocation planning for medium- and long-term purposes.

Abstract:
The present research deals with a modified optimization algorithm of harmony search coupled with artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the optimal cutting condition. To this end, several experiments were carried out on AISI 1045 steel to attain required data for training of ANNs. Feed forward artificial neural network was utilized to create predictive models of surface roughness and cutting forces exploiting experimental data, and Modified Harmony Search algorithm (MHS) was used to find the constrained optimum of the surface roughness. Furthermore, Simple Harmony Search algorithm (SHS) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) were used for solving the same optimization problem to illustrate the capabilities of MHS algorithm. The obtained results demonstrate that MHS algorithm is more effective and authoritative in approaching the global solution than the SHS algorithm and GA.

Abstract:
Abstract It is well known that drilling fluid is a key parameter for optimizing drilling operations, cleaning the hole, and managing the rig hydraulics and margins of surge and swab pressures. Although the experimental works present valid and reliable results, they are expensive and time consuming. On the other hand, continuous and regular determination of the rheological mud properties can perform its essential functions during well construction. More uncertainties in planning the drilling fluid properties meant that more challenges may be exposed during drilling operations. This study presents two predictive techniques, multiple regression analysis (MRA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), to determine the rheological properties of water-based drilling fluid based on other simple measurable properties. While mud density (MW), marsh funnel (MF), and solid% are key input parameters in this study, the output functions or models are plastic viscosity (PV), yield point (YP), apparent viscosity (AV), and gel strength. The prediction methods were demonstrated by means of a field case in eastern Iraq, using datasets from daily drilling reports of two wells in addition to the laboratory measurements. To test the performance ability of the developed models, two error-based metrics (determination coefficient R2 and root mean square error RMSE) have been used in this study. The current results of this study support the evidence that MW, MF, and solid% are consistent indexes for the prediction of rheological properties. Both mud density and solid content have a relative-significant effect on increasing PV, YP, AV, and gel strength. However, a scattering around each fit curve is observed which proved that one rheological property alone is not sufficient to estimate other properties. The results also reveal that both MRA and ANN are conservative in estimating the fluid rheological properties, but ANN is more precise than MRA. Eight empirical mathematical models with high performance capacity have been developed in this study to determine the rheological fluid properties based on simple and quick equipment as mud balance and marsh funnel. This study presents cost-effective models to determine the rheological fluid properties for future well planning in Iraqi oil fields.

In Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference. SPE, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/207800-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In recent years great interest has risen towards surrogate reservoir models based on data-driven methodologies with the purpose of speeding up reservoir management decisions. In this work, a Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN) based on a Capacitance Resistance Model (CRM) has been developed and tested on a synthetic and on a real dataset to predict the production of oil reservoirs under waterflooding conditions. CRMs are simple models based on material balance that estimate the liquid production as a function of injected water and bottom hole pressure. PINNs are Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) that incorporate prior physical knowledge of the system under study to regularize the network. A PINN based on a CRM is obtained by including the residual of the CRM differential equations in the loss function designed to train the neural network on the historical data. During training, weights and biases of the network and parameters of the physical equations, such as connectivity factors between wells, are updated with the backpropagation algorithm. To investigate the effectiveness of the novel methodology on waterflooded scenarios, two test cases are presented: a small synthetic one and a real mature reservoir. Results obtained with PINN are compared with respect to CRM and ANN alone. In the synthetic case CRM and PINN give slightly better quality history matches and predictions than ANN. The connectivity factors estimated by CRM and PINN are very similar and correctly represent the underlying geology. In the real case PINN gives better quality history matches and predictions than ANN, and both significantly outperform CRM. Even though the CRM formulation is too simple to predict the complex behavior of a real reservoir, the CRM based regularization contributes to improving the PINN predictions quality compared to the purely data-driven ANN model. The connectivity factors estimated by CRM and PINN are not in agreement. However, the latter method provided results closer to our understanding of the flooding process after many years of operations and data analysis. All considered, PINN outperformed both CRM and ANN in terms of predictivity and interpretability, effectively combining strengths from both methodologies. The presented approach does not require the construction of a 3D model since it learns directly from production data, while preserving physical consistency. Moreover, it represents a computationally inexpensive alternative to traditional full-physics reservoir simulations which could have vast applications for problems requiring many forward evaluations, like the optimization of water allocation for mature reservoirs.

Abstract:
Abstract In the wake of today's industrial revolution, many advanced technologies and techniques have been developed to address the complex challenges in well integrity evaluation. One of the most prominent innovations is the integration of physics-based data science for robust downhole measurements. This paper introduces a promising breakthrough in electromagnetism-based corrosion imaging using physics informed machine learning (PIML), tested and validated on the cross-sections of real metal casings/tubing with defects of various sizes, locations, and spacing. Unlike existing electromagnetism-based inspection tools, where only circumferential average metal thickness is measured, this research investigates the artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted interpretation of a unique arrangement of electromagnetic (EM) sensors. This facilitates the development of a novel solution for through-tubing corrosion imaging that enhances defect detection with pixel-level accuracy. The developed framework incorporates a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based EM forward solver and an artificial neural network (ANN), namely the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN). The ANN is trained using the results generated from the FDTD solver, which simulates sensor readings for different scenarios of defects. The integration of the array EM-sensor responses and an ANN enabled generalizable and accurate measurements of metal loss percentage across various experimental defects. It also enabled the precise predictions of the defects’ aperture sizes, numbers, and locations in 360-degree coverage. Results were plotted in customized 2D heat-maps for any desired cross-section of the test casings. Further analysis of different techniques demonstrated that the LSTM-RNN could show higher precision and robustness compared to regular dense NNs, especially in the case of multiple defects. The LSTM-RNN is validated using additional data from simulated and experimental data. The results show reliable predictions even with limited training data. The model accurately predicted defects of larger and smaller sizes that were intentionally excluded from the training data to demonstrate generalizability. This highlights a major advance toward corrosion imaging behind tubing. This novel technique paves the way for the use of similar concepts on other sensors in multiple barriers imaging. Further work includes improvement to the sensor package and ANNs by adding a third dimension to the imaging capabilities to produce 3D images of defects on casings.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Hydrates formation in subsea pipelines is one of the main reliability concerns for flow assurance engineers. A fast and reliable assessment of the Cool-Down Time (CDT), the period between a shut-down event and possible hydrates formation in the asset, is of key importance for the safety of operations. Existing methods for the CDT prediction are highly dependent on the use of very complex physics-based models that demand large computational time, which hinders their usage in an online environment. Therefore, this work presents a novel methodology for the development of surrogate models that predict, in a fast and accurate way, the CDT in subsea pipelines after unplanned shutdowns. The proposed methodology is, innovatively, tailored on the basis of reliability perspective, by treating the CDT as a risk index, where a critic CDT threshold (i.e. the minimum time needed by the operator to preserve the line from hydrates formation) is considered to distinguish the simulation outputs into high-risk and low-risk domains. The methodology relies on the development of a hybrid Machine Learning (ML) based model using datasets generated through complex physics-based model’ simulations. The hybrid ML-based model consists of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier that assigns a risk level (high or low) to the measured operating condition of the asset, and two Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for predicting the CDT at the high-risk (low CDT) or the low-risk (high CDT) operating conditions previously assigned by the classifier. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is validated by its application to a case study involving a pipeline in an offshore western African asset, modelled by a transient physics-based commercial software. The results show outperformance of the capabilities of the proposed hybrid ML-based model (i.e., SVM + 2 ANNs) compared to the classical approach (i.e. modelling the entire system with one global ANN) in terms of enhancing the prediction of the CDT during the high-risk conditions of the asset. This behaviour is confirmed applying the novel methodology to training datasets of different size. In fact, the high-risk Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE) is reduced on average of 15% compared to the NRMSE of a global ANN model. Moreover, it’s shown that high-risk CDT are better predicted by the hybrid model even if the critic CDT, which divides the simulation outputs in high-risk and low-risk values (i.e. the minimum time needed by the operator to preserve the line from hydrates formation), changes. The enhancement, in this case, is on average of 14.6%. Eventually, results show how the novel methodology cuts down by more than one hundred seventy-eight times the computational times for online CDT predictions compared to the physics-based model.
