Mon, Ya-Feng. Film Production and Consumption in Contemporary Taiwan. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789089648884.

Full text
Abstract:
This book uses the potent case study of contemporary Taiwanese queer romance films to address the question of how capitalism in Taiwan has privileged the film industry at the expense of the audience's freedom to choose and respond to culture on its own terms. Interweaving in-depth interviews with filmmakers, producers, marketers, and spectators, Ya-Fong Mon takes a biopolitical approach to the question, showing how the industry uses investments in techno-science, ancillary marketing, and media convergence to seduce and control the sensory experience of the audience-yet that control only extends so far: volatility remains a key component of the film-going experience.

Haldimann, Matthias, Andreas Luible, and Mauro Overend. Structural use of Glass. Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed010.

Full text
Abstract:

Recent architectural trends and technological developments have brought about unprecedented opportunities and exciting changes in the use of glass in buildings.
Structural engineers currently have a bewildering array of glass products and configurations to choose from and a wide range of normal and exceptional loading conditions to consider, but very few unified reference texts for undertaking these tasks. This book attempts to redress this issue by providing an overview of the recent developments in this field thereby providing a basis for the understanding of the structural performance and design of glass in buildings.
Each chapter draws on the latest developments in practice and research and contains contributions from various international glass experts. The mix of general and specialist content ranging from rules of thumb to fracture mechanics and novel applications to post-breakage performance make this book useful to practitioners and researchers. Furthermore, the text is supplemented by tables of the major codes of practice and by an extensive list of references.
The book is primarily for structural engineers and researchers who have an interest in structural glass. It will be used by senior undergraduates, post-graduate students, researchers and practicing engineers.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the saga of George M. Pullman's “model town,” which he originally envisioned as a way to reform the senses of the working classes and achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution to the labor problem. With his construction of a model town, Pullman believed he could tame the sensory values of his workers by promoting “self-restraint” and the refinement of “coarse tastes.” In the end, however, Pullman's effort to regulate workers' sensory lives yielded resentment that culminated in a railroad strike in 1894. This chapter first discusses the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and how it raised concerns about a radical mob bent on stifling—even reversing—Chicago's economic modernization. It then considers Pullman's ambitious plan to build a corporate town south of the city that would retrain workers' senses to ease the conflict between labor and capital without sacrificing the bottomline of his Palace Car Company. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the Pullman Strike of 1894 sparked by suffering and discontent in the model town.

Abstract:
Behavioral finance is useful only if it can be applied to help people make better decisions. This chapter offers reflections on the good, bad, and ugly of practical applications of behavioral finance in a commercial banking setting. It explores the difficulties of nonexperts experimenting with behavioral finance, and how effective applications require a unique mix of expert knowledge and the ability to effect change through a business. Principles of good applications of behavioral finance are also presented, with information on how to start using behavioral finance within an organization. The importance of senior management’s acknowledging that behavioral finance practitioners do not necessarily know the correct answer and that they will need to use randomized control trials to learn is also discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the importance of gender, a key concept for this book, in the examination of the punishment–body relation, and reviews findings on the look of the body and the management of physical, gendered appearance within the restricted and complex politics of imprisonment. It focuses particularly on the role of dress in custody and on various consumptive props used by women to manage their gendered identities and performances in various prison moments and stages. It argues that women’s imprisonment is gendered and combines a mix of penal and patriarchal controls and impositions on women that come together to form a sense of double oppression.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the film career of D. A. Pennebaker. Pennebaker's key word is “interesting.” In numerous interviews, he has referred to events, subjects, and topics that have a certain “attractive” quality, in the sense that they demand attention, as interesting. In this way, he has insisted that a filmmaker “must shoot only what interests you.” His diversity of interesting films encompasses hybrid forms in which components of “documentary” mix with heightened dramatic elements associated with fiction film. These films include Daybreak Express (1953–57), an avant-gardist look at New York City; Jane (1962), a study of the actress Jane Fonda; Depeche Mode 101 (1989), and Only the Strong Survive (2002).

Dressler, Wolfgang U., Basilio Calderone, Sabine Sommer-Lolei, and Katharina Korecky-Kröll. Experimental, Acquisitional and Corpus linguistic Approaches to the Study of Morphonotactics. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/978oeaw87141.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume unites six contributions on morphonotactics of consonant clusters and its difference to phonotactics (in a narrow sense). Morphonotactics comprises that part of phonotactics (in the large sense) which is due to interaction with morphology. It deals prototypically with clusters which are due to morphological concatenation as in the word-final consonant cluster in Ger. (er/sie) mach-t '(he/she) make-s', which is morphonotactic vs. its phonotactic homophonous equivalent Macht 'power'. The opening chapter introduces into the area of morphonotactics and into the following five chapters which deal with German or French morphonotactics or both. The first represents the first corpuslinguistic analysis of German morphonotactics based on a large electronic corpus, the second investigates phonetic processing in both languages, the remaining three, equally distributed between both languages, with the impact of (mor)phonotactics on processing and language acquisition. Thus, this volume unites phonological, morphological, phonetic, psycholinguistic, corpuslinguistic and typological perspectives integrated into a series of experimental approaches. The volume publishes selectively results of a bilateral research project funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines how Abraham Lincoln and Owen Lovejoy were brought together by a common vision to end slavery. Lincoln, a Springfield lawyer, and Lovejoy, a Princeton pastor, met for the first time at the Springfield State Fair in Illinois on October 4, 1854. At that time, both Lincoln and Lovejoy were angered by the Kansas–Nebraska Act championed by Illinois Democratic senator Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln wanted the Whigs and Lovejoy wanted the Republican Party to lead the “fusion” movement uniting all those opposed to Douglas's law and advocating the restoration of the Missouri Compromise. In a speech, Lincoln declared, “This...real zeal for the spread of slavery, I cannot but hate.” Lovejoy, one of those in attendance, identified with Lincoln's emotion and conviction, as his brother, Elijah, was murdered by a pro-slavery mob. This chapter first discusses the beginning of the Republican Party in Illinois before turning to his and Lincoln's election to the Illinois House of Representatives on November 7, 1854.

Abstract:
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. The distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music and its critiques have become something of an industry in film music studies lately. There are articles, sections of journal issues, conference sessions, and other activities organized on the topic. As I argued inHearing Film(2001), I have never found the terminology particularly useful, though as many have suggested, we can’t throw out all sense of the distinction that the vocabulary tries to describe. The problem, however, amps up exponentially when video games and Web sites are added to the mix. The use of music in “new media” challenges most of film music studies’ assumptions and presumptions, and these new practices demand new approaches and vocabulary. This chapter focuses on the challenges posed to film music studies models by digital media practices.

Full text
Abstract:
Max Scheler’s contribution to the development of phenomenology is marked perhaps most distinctively by his analysis of the emotions. Rather than treat the emotions as merely subjective or psychological, he grants them their own integrity and privileged means of access. The purpose of this chapter is to show how his phenomenological analysis of the emotions offers unique insights into the nature of moral and political responsibility. There are three main sections to this chapter. The first section provides a brief biographical sketch, highlighting those who were most instrumental in Scheler’s approach to phenomenology. The second section examines how Scheler’s phenomenological analysis of the emotions overcomes the reductive approaches to the emotions in Modernity including Husserl’s own approach to the emotions. The third section clarifies how Scheler articulates the distinctive sense of solidarity necessarily entailed in the social relations and acts shared by members of a community.

Abstract:
This chapter turns more directly toward organized crime. It identifies the Chicago Heights boys and the mix of social capital processes, specifically the social closure and brokerage opportunities, that allowed this segment of the Chicago Outfit a near half century run as a highly profitable, successful criminal operation. Illegal activities associated with organized crime provided an avenue for social mobility. While these illegal operations existed from the beginning of Chicago Heights' incorporation as a city in the early 1900s, the 1920s saw a dramatic increase in the size and scope of these operations as Prohibition created a tremendous black market opportunity for illegal liquor. Exhibiting a strong entrepreneurial sense and a willingness to use violence to accomplish their goals, a select group of Italian residents in Chicago Heights allied themselves with Al Capone to gain control of the illegal liquor, gambling, and prostitution trades in the Heights.

Full text
Abstract:
In On Generation and Corruption 1. 10 and 2. 7 Aristotle discusses mixing and mixtures. Recent scholars tend to read the two texts together, thus treating the production of homoeomers in GC 2. 7 as a process of mixing the material elements. I argue that the tendency to treat homoeomers as mixtures of material elements is incorrect: GC 1. 10 explains the mixing of bodies that have already been produced from the elements, whereas GC 2. 7 explains the processes that produce compound bodies from simpler constituents. In GC 2. 7 only the primary contraries mix in the formation of a homoeomer: material elements cannot be constituents of mixtures for theoretical and physical reasons. This makes sense of the production of homoeomers in GC 2. 7 despite worries about mixing the material elements. For Aristotle, the production of homoeomers is simultaneously a process of mixing the primary contraries and generating the homoeomers from the destruction of material elements.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It is no good any longer having any opinion upon anything.’ After the death of his wife, the handsome politician Phineas Finn returns from Ireland to the parliamentary fray. In his absence the political and social world has subtly changed, parties and policies no longer fixed and advancement dependent upon scheming and alliances. His private life lays him open to the scandal-mongering press, and the wild accusations of an unhinged rival; but much more than his reputation is at stake when he is accused of murdering a political opponent. Trollope shows a remarkably prescient sense of the importance of intrigue, bribery, and sexual scandal, and the power of the press to make or break a political career. He is equally skilled in portraying the complex nature of Phineas's romantic entanglements with three powerful women: the mysterious Madame Max, the devoted Laura Kennedy, and the irrepressible Lady Glencora (now Duchess of Omnium). The fourth of Trollope's Palliser novels, Phineas Redux is one of his most spellbinding achievements, and the first modern ‘media’ novel.

Abstract:
E important sa devii „open mind”, daca n-ai reusit intre timp. Altfel sagetezi perspectivele si altfel vei fructifica oportunitatile ivite. Dar e important sa treci peste angoasa existentiala a vietii si reusitei. In fapt, ele ar trebui sa reprezinte balansul perfect pentru atingerea telului. Si atunci, ce e important? Pai, sa le luam pe rand.

Talen, Emily. Neighborhood. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190907495.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is written in support of those who believe that neighborhoods should be genuinely relevant in our lives, not as casual descriptors of geographic location but as places that provide an essential context for daily life. “Neighborhood” in its traditional sense—as a localized, place-based, delimited urban area that has some level of personal influence—seems a vanished part of the urban experience. This book explores whether 21st-century neighborhoods can once again provide a sense of caring and local participation and not devolve into enclaves seeking social insularity and separation. That the localized, diverse neighborhood has often failed to materialize requires thorough exploration. While many factors leading to the decline of the traditional neighborhood—e-commerce, suburban exclusivity, internet-based social contact—seem to be beyond anyone’s control, other factors seem more a product of neglect and confusion about neighborhood definition and its place in American society. Debates about the neighborhood have involved questions about social mix, serviceability, self-containment, centeredness, and connectivity within and without. This book works through these debates and proposes their resolution. The historical and global record shows that there are durable, time-tested regularities about neighborhoods. Many places outside of the West were built with neighborhood structure in evidence—long before professionalized, Western urban planning came on the scene. This book explores the compelling case that the American neighborhood can be connected to these traditions, anchored in human nature and regularities of form, and reinstated as something relevant and empowering in 21st-century urban experience.

Abstract:
Whose Blues is about the way in which we define, interpret, and make sense of the blues in a postmodern moment more than a century removed from the music's origins in the Deep South. If "Blues is black music," as some contemporary claimants insist, what should we make of the International Blues Challenge held annually in Memphis, with its all-comers mix of nationalities and ethnicities? If there's "No black. No white. Just the blues," as another familiar meme would have us believe, why do some Chicago blues people hear that proclamation not as a call to transracial fellowship, but as an aggressive attempt at cultural appropriation and the erasure of traumatic racial histories sounded by the music? In Whose Blues, author Adam Gussow, an award-winning blues scholar and blues harmonica player, surveys the contemporary blues scene and the long and tangled history out of which it emerged, keeping his eye out for the paradoxes--the "bad facts"-- that enable revisionist scholarship and unsettle conventional understandings. Using blues literature as a cultural anchor, Gussow also offers a plain-language introduction to the tradition's major writers and themes, including W. C. Handy, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and the Black Arts Movement.
