Abstract:
This paper describes my research project and body of work, which investigates social inequalities through the different language and functions of everyday objects. The research moves on from my previous Honours research project on the dou ble nature of caravan parks in NSW and looked at the changing demographics of these locations. I noted the increase of semi-permanent, residential 'homes' for low income earners and the unemployed, in these holiday locations. This paper examines broader social issues of homelessness and social inequalities within our society. I look at the complexities in the definitions of homelessness and the ways in which people find themselves in the position where they rely on welfare agencies and government support. I also investigate different representations of homelessness by artists and other social commentators, ranging from the hopeless victim to the vagrant. This section locates my social concerns with the context of theoretical debate and artistic representation. I have used everyday and mundane objects in my artworks to discuss these social concerns. Everyday objects posses a language and commonality that is familiar to all members of society. This language is developed from the different historical, cultural and functional qualities that everyday objects possess. I discus this in relation to the development of the everyday object in artistic practices from the early 20th century to today. Of specifically importance to my practice is the influence of contemporary German artists and their manipulation of objects to make works with political and social content. Throughout this paper I have discussed individual art works which illustrate my social concerns and the practicalities of the everyday. Revealing how I juxtapose certain objects to question the uneven nature of travel and home, with regards to possessions and mobility. Additionally I challenge the normal functions of objects to reveal new absurd possibilities of use.

Abstract:
Iran also called as Persia, with the area of almost 1.5 million square meters, and a population of more than 75 million people, with the civilization dating back to almost 5000 years ago, with a long history in Art and Architecture, has been experiencing rapid social and historical changes during the time, From secular modernism to traditionalized transitions. Various changes in many fields within time have been a key factor for influencing the social and daily life of the people. In other words, History of architecture in Iran has been clearly reflecting sociocultural aspects of people’s life. There used to be an apparent harmony and balance between the cultural needs of people and the diagrammatic features and spatial arrangements of architecture. Despite all these remarkably valuable characteristics, the contemporary architecture of Iran has been recently walking on the edge line, meaning that it is losing the connection to its unique context. ‘Moving out of the box’ is a study aiming to Design one holiday house according to sociocultural needs of one Iranian family and also an approach for the reestablishment of some local and traditional architectural features.

Gibson, Gregory Dean. "Moving forward : the "save the Kogawa house" campaign and reconciliatory politics in Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/12605.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the symbolic implications of preserving Canadian author Joy Kogawa’s childhood home in the name of “reconciliation.” The house features prominently in Kogawa’s acclaimed semi-autobiographical novel Obasan, based in part on her experience of Japanese Canadian internment during World War II. From 2003 to 2006, the house was poised for demolition until a non-profit land trust secured the house’s protection through a campaign guided by ideals of “hope, healing, and reconciliation.” In the current global climate of redress, the oft-invoked terms “reconciliation” and “healing” are increasingly evacuated of meaning, and are consequently dismissed simply as empty rhetoric. I sought to determine how these terms operated in the context of the Kogawa House. In order to assess the site’s capacity to engage reconciliatory ideals, I consulted and analyzed fundraising materials published by campaign organizers, letters of support from the public, and relevant media reports. I argue first that the real-world history of internment converged conceptually with Obasan’s fictionalized telling of these events so that the house and Kogawa herself became cognitive metonyms for the larger injustice. As a result, collective/national healing and reconciliation could be metonymically enacted through more familiar modes of interpersonal reconciliation. For example, Kogawa’s long-awaited “homecoming,” a deeply meaningful moment for the author herself, could become a gesture of symbolic restitution for all Japanese Canadians’ lost property. The second argument central to this thesis is that the historically dark period of Japanese Canadian internment, and its legacies, was made more intelligible and coherent for various stakeholders through the overlapping narratives constructed around saving the Kogawa House. I contend that what was at stake in this heritage preservation project was not only post-war relations between Japanese Canadians and the nation that betrayed them, but also the dominant Canadian narrative of multiculturalism—that Canada is a country that embraces diversity and upholds human rights. This reconciliatory project maintained the coherence of this vital Canadian myth. I conclude by claiming the Kogawa House as a successful model for community-based projects aimed at sustainable reconciliation, where ongoing engagement with past injustices is vital to deterrence and non-repetition of future ones.

McLeod, Christine. "Changing places- Resilience in children who move." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1844.

Full text
Abstract:
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that over 40% of all Australian children moved at least one time in the census period from 1996 to 2001 (ABS, 2001). The literature varies in the impact that this has on children. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between residential relocation, resilience and the emotional, behavioural and academic adjustment of children 8-12 years of age who had moved. Risk factors as identified in the literature as well as the relative impact of resilience were examined. By studying how adjustment occurs in the context of resilience, possible areas for prevention and intervention may be developed for the large numbers of children who move. Results showed that the sample population was in the normal range in academic and behavioural terms. The sample was found to have repeated more grades than average; however the children did not exhibit significant behavioural or emotional consequences. A number of demographic factors have been indicated in the literature as affecting adjustment after residential relocations, yet these were generally not found to be significantly associated with adjustment for this study population. Socioeconomic status was the only factor other than resilience to have been significantly associated with adjustment. Possibly due to the developmental stage of the participants, only the resilience subscales of interpersonal strength and school functioning were found to be significant in their positive association with adjustment, leading to fewer behavioural and academic problems. While the children in this study have all had the potential stress of moving house, the demographic characteristics of this sample would suggest that they might not have had to encounter multiple life challenges or adversities. This conclusion may help explain the lack of significant effects of demographic factors on the adjustment of the children in this sample. Results highlight the importance of good schooling and that the core business of schools in building and enhancing the intellectual functioning of children, is a vital component in the development of resilience. These findings suggest that different aspects of resilience may be important for different developmental stages and different life stressors. The distinction between cause and effect when examining resilience factors is discussed and it is suggested that outcomes in one context may be treated as influences upon outcomes in another context.

Eastwood, Janet Elizabeth Robbins. "Better and happier and freer than before: agency and subversion of genre in Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50335.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways challenge and subvert the genres of fairy tale, Arabian Nights romance, and Victorian sensibility, respectively, and the ways in which the protagonist of each tale defies the constraints imposed by family and her or his own internal narrative to gain self-knowledge and agency. Jones’s protagonists, Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain, are initially stifled by cultural and familial expectations and by their own internalization of these beliefs. It is not until they are forced into circumstances far different from those they are used to that Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain begin to question their beliefs about their own potential and about the world around them. During their adventures, they apply pre-existing skills and gain new practical abilities and knowledge, developing a stronger sense of identity, a surer command of language, and the ability to perceive truth amid pretense. Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain subvert their own expectations and genres to gain agency. Jones uses wordplay and humour throughout her protagonists’ journeys, and visually represents magic, creativity, and freedom through the use of colour, particularly blue and multi-coloured objects, and through flowers and gardens.

Abstract:
The diploma project on the theme: "The system for monitoring the safe movement of robotized devices and systems in the SH" contains 80 pages of text, drawings - 21 , tables - 10 , sources - 15 and 7 attachments. The urgency of the topic of the project is dictated by the fact that in recent years people increasingly make their homes "smart". This is due to the fact that the systems of this building can save time, increase the level of comfort and increase the safety of the user.
However, along with the integration of robotized systems and devices, there is a question of the safety of their functionality in the environment where they work. In particular, there is a problem of the safe movement of mobile devices in the "smart house", where they can cause damage to themselves and property of owners, not to mention the health of the users themselves. A solution to these problems may be a single monitoring system for the safe movement of robotic devices in the SH, which will monitor the positions of robots, lay a safe route and report it.
The purpose of this project is to develop a monitoring system to ensure the safe movement of robots in the smart house. Object - methods and means of determining the location and possible path of moving robotic devices and systems of different types in conditions of space constraints and the presence of obstacles.
Subject - algorithms for monitoring location and laying safe routes for robotic devices and systems in SH.

Abstract:
This paper looks to examine the intersection of personal memory, physical space and emergent media. Looking at varying examples within psychology, visual arts and philosophy, the argument is raised that the dominance of film and media's presentation of physical spaces and structures now tends to dominate our perception of space, and become intertwined with our own reveries and travels. Using the work of philosopher Gaston Bachelard as a launchpad for enquiry, we consider the personal and collective function of memory and how it engages with the action of experiencing films, media, arts, images, and ecological objects.

Abstract:
Horse and buggy transportation is spreading as rapidly as its Amish and Old Order Mennonite users are, as are buggy crashes with motor vehicles. This study examines the primary causes of 76 reported horse and buggy crashes in Pennsylvania in 2006. The main crash types identified include a motorist rear-ending a forward-moving buggy, motorist failing to pass a buggy, buggy struck while crossing an intersection, and buggy struck while making a left turn. While causative factors varied for each crash type, major factors include the motorist or buggy driver incorrectly comprehending speed differentials, the motorist acting carelessly around the buggy, and miscommunication between the motorist and buggy driver. Within these crash types, buggy conspicuity was neither a major issue nor a possible cause in most.

Assefa, Emrakeb. "An investigation into the popularity of American action movies shown in informal video houses in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002871.

Full text
Abstract:
The early 1990s saw a major change in the Ethiopian history in so far as Ethiopian media consumption practices was concerned. With the change of government in 1991, the ‘Iron Curtail’ prohibiting the dissemination of Western symbolic products within the country was lifted which in turn led to a surge in demand for Western predominantly American media texts. In order to supply this new demand, informal video houses showing primarily American action movies were opened in Addis Ababa. There was a significant shift in Ethiopians’ films consumption practices which were previously limited to watching films produced by socialist countries mainly the former Soviet Union. This study set out to probe reasons for the attraction of American action movies shown in video-viewing houses in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia amongst the urban unemployed male youth. Particularly, it examines how the meanings produced by and embedded in the cultural industries of the West are appropriated in the day-to-day lives of the youth. The importance of video houses as a shared male cultural space for Ethiopian unemployed youth and the watching of American action movies in this space are the main entry and focus of this study. Using qualitative methods such as observation, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, the study explores what happens in this cultural space and how one makes sense of the impact of American media on local audiences. The findings of the study point to the embeddedness of viewing practice in everyday life and the importance of local contexts in understanding text-reader interaction. This is shown by the male youth’s tendency to use media messages as a mode of escape and a symbolic distancing from their lived impoverished reality. The study also seeks to highlight that the video houses as cultural space have contributed to the creation of marginal male youth identities in the Ethiopian patriarchal society. As such, these and other findings, the study argues, highlight the deficiencies of the media imperialism thesis with its definitive claims for cultural homogenisation as effect of globalisation of media. As such, this study should be read as emphasising the capability of local audience groups in Third World country like Ethiopia to construct their own meanings and thus their own local cultures and identities, even in the face of their virtually complete dependence on the image flows distributed by the transnational culture industries.

Carobolante, Jean-Baptiste. Electronic Thesis or Diss., Normandie, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020NORMC036.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to achieve two objectives: first, to produce a general analysis of contemporary cinema of spectre where we define its genesis with Ringu (Hideo Nakata, 1998). What distinguishes spectral films from ghost films is the fact that their patterns are intimately linked to technological, social and metaphysical doubts of our contemporary societies. The concept of spectre, defined throughout this research, is intrinsically linked to the history of art and the philosophy of the image and perception. This is how we arrive at the second objective: to propose a theory of our contemporary relationship to the image based on this cinematographic genre. The initial theoretical intuition is that we live in times where the image has a predominant political value, to the point of influencing action and that we can find, in the image itself, the material for thinking about this growing influence. Thus, the "spectral" cinema, as a cinema where the spectre is defined as "an invisible form which will do everything to make itself visible", is to us the very cinema where this power of the image and its part of incarnation are played out

High aging population and low birth rate will be a serious global problem. According to the definition of the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), if the population aged 65 and above is more than 7% of the total population, it will come to the aging society. The aging society will come up with the problems of social economy, family structure, health care and house nursing, etc. Based on theory of planned behavior and "brand image" facet, the purpose of the study was aimed to explore the intention toward seniors moving into elderly house. 250 valid questionnaires were collected from seniors aged 60 and over, living in Taichung. Data was measured and analyzed by SPSS 22.0 statistical tool. The results showed that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavior control of seniors’ moving into elderly house significantly affected seniors’ behavioral intention. Above all, perceived behavioral control was the main factor of moving to the elderly house for seniors. However, brand image showed no significant impact. Overall study was proved to reach the explanatory power of 58%, indicating that this mode effectively explained the seniors’ behavior intention toward moving into the elderly house. Abstract:
Radiotherapy for tumours in the thorax and upper abdomen is challenging since they move notably with breathing. To cover the whole extent of tumour motion, relatively large margins are added to treatment volumes, posing a higher risk of toxicity for surrounding organs-at-risk (OARs). The Mid Position (Mid-P) method accounts for breathing motion by using deformable image registration (DIR) to transform all phases of a 4DCT scan to a time-weighted average 3DCT scan (Mid-P CT). The Mid-P strategy results in smaller treatment volumes, potentially boosting the delivery of hypofractionated treatments. To bring the Mid-P approach to the Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC), an in-house Mid position software module – RunMidP – was optimized. The module reconstructs the Mid-P CT and estimates breathing motion amplitudes of tumours and relevant OARs. In addition, this project presents a set of experiments to evaluate the performance of the Mid-P method and its feasibility for clinical implementation. The experiments were conducted throughout three different studies using 4DCT data from 18 phantoms and 23 patients. In Study A, the accuracy and image quality of two DIR algorithms (Plastimatch and Elastix) were assessed using quantitative metrics applied on either warped images or manually delineated contours. The reproduction of the patient’s mean position by the Mid-P CT and the estimation of motion amplitudes were compared to a soon-to-be Mid-P commercial software developed by Mirada Medical Ltd. In Study B,similar experiments were performed, this time using a more rigorous reference – “true” Mid-P CT scans and “true” motion estimations. In Study C, the image quality of Mid P CT scans was assessed quantitatively and qualitatively. Both Plastimatch and Elastix registration showed comparable registration accuracy, although Elastix showed superior image quality of reconstructed Mid-P CTs. Based on contour metrics, the registration error was less than 2 mm. In-house Mid-P CTs showed a slightly lower match to ground truth Mid-P CTs than the ones reconstructed by the Mirada prototype due to differences in DIR methods and small shifts to the original image geometry. Higher image differences were found in the diaphragm lung interface, where the patient's anatomy moves faster due to breathing, and in homogeneous regions such as the air regions in the bowel. On the other hand, differences (estimated-predicted) in motion amplitudes smaller than 1 mm were observed in 37 moving tumours (78.7%), showing a good performance of the Mid-P algorithm. Regarding the image quality, improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio and removal of image artefacts in Mid-P CTs are great advantages for using them as the planning CT. Clinicians also gave a good assessment of the suitability of Mid-P CT scans for treatment planning. No significant differences were found in the performance of the RunMidP compared to other Mid-Position packages, although worse scores were given to the CCC dataset than the dataset from another hospital. The in-house Mid-position algorithm shows promising results regarding the use of the software module in radiotherapy for lung and upper abdomen cancer. Further exploration must be given to improve the registration accuracy, image quality of the input data, and speed up the reconstruction of the Mid-P CT scan.

Abstract For a metropolis, the development of public institution, for example parks, is crucial subject, whether for the growth of economy or the rise of living standard. In the process of urban development, the government has no choice to demolish the original building and institution. However, the process of demolishing faces much difficulty in recent years, including severe resistatnce of the residence. The government was forced to spend much time in planning to get consensus. In order to minimize the discontent of the residents and collect their opinions, social workers are assigned to take part in the demolishing process, and are expected to facilitate the completion of the process by using their professional communicating skills. The methodology of this research is qualitative approach. The author used in-depth interview skill to interview with eleven social workers who ever took part in demolishing cases to understand their roles in the process and how they see their own role. Furthermore, the author could analyze if there are conflicts between their roles and social work professional autonomy, and the reflective thinking of social workers. The conclusion of this research are as follows: (1) Professionalism are related to both age and working years. (2) People who work with different target groups will have different points of view. (3) There are certain viewpoint gaps between policy-makers and first-line workers in “professionalism”. (4) The arrangement inside bureaucratic system induces the limitation of professionalism. (5) Social workers are not given a “clear-defined ” role in the whole deconstruction process.

The main goal of this study is to make a comparison in the movie aesthetics between Ang Lee’s《Brokeback Mountain》and Yimou Zhang’s《House of Flying Daggers》. The study is carried out by employing the methods of reference analysis and content analysis, and is mainly discussed in three aspects: thematic content, image narration, and audio presentation. Initially, the study bases the theory on the reference analysis of movie aesthetic theories, movie image aesthetics, movie audio aesthetics, movie genre, and Chinese movie aesthetics. Subsequently, from examining most of the previous works of Ang Lee and Yimou Zhang, the study can deduce the inclination and characteristics of the themes of their movies and their audio-visual aesthetics. Ultimately, from the scrutiny of Ang Lee’s《Brokeback Mountain》and Yimou Zhang’s《House of Flying Daggers》, this study reached the following conclusions: 1、In the aspect of Thematic Contents: Both Ang Lee’s《Brokeback Mountain》and Yimou Zhang’s《House of Flying Daggers》are Romances – the love that endures life and death.《Brokeback Mountain》takes the impression of a Western film; 《House of Flying Daggers》, Wuxia (Martial Arts and Action).《Brokeback Mountain》involves the issue of homosexuality while《House of Flying Daggers》presents the issues of the contrasting ideas in pursuing honor or reclusion. 2、In the aspect of Image Aesthetics: From the suppressed tone of the movie; clearly structured, delicate, and fluent narrative montage, montage of thoughts, and rhythmic montage cuts; and the visual motif of the “Brokeback Mountain”, the movie 《Brokeback Mountain》highlights the “harmony” and the “Brokeback Mountain” shared in the hearts of Jack and Ennis. It is more of an objective social realism aesthetics based on humanities. On the contrary, 《House of Flying Daggers》utilizes the substantial grace of the Tang dynasty, skills of martial arts, and peculiar the movement of camera to create the visual model of the concept of the “ambush”. The progressive status of love between Mei and Jin, and the well-arranged rises and falls of the emotions in love, are designed in a beauteous visual space. The movie is thus more of an expressionist idealism aesthetics. 3、In the aspect of Audio Aesthetics: 《Brokeback Mountain》comprises philosophical dialogues and language of love in the film; the western country music in the 1960’s and 70’s, including songs such as Swing, Rock and Roll, and Blues, that conveys a cultural sense, while embroidering the atmosphere of love; and the motif of “imagery of Brokeback Mountain”, motif of “love”, which unites the visual sense with the audio, become the main off screen music, enriching the description on the low-profiled love of Jack and Ennis in the audio level. 《House of Flying Daggers》contains the artistic language of love and dialogue; the folklore-styled “In the North there is a Beauty” changing from the song in the film, conveying the message of luring the enemy, expressing the thoughts of honor, to off screen music, writing the concept of psychological “ambush"from the audio level; and the theme of love , being background music following the progression of love, while penetrating the love between the two in the atmosphere. In summary, 《Brokeback Mountain》is a clearly structured, delicate, fluent audio-visual narrative that is full of culture. 《House of Flying Daggers》is a heavily stylistic audio-visual narrative composed of exquisite visual designs and abundant sound effects – full of artistry. Lastly, this thesis proposes suggestions: about Ang Lee and Yimou Zhang’s film context, formula, and expectations.

Abstract:
“Prestige and Prurience: The Decline of the American Art House and the Emergence of Sexploitation, 1957-1972” presents a historical narrative of the art house theatre during the 1960s and its surrounding years, examining the ways in which art theatres transformed into adult theatres during the 1960s and 1970s. Beginning in earnest in the immediate post-war period, art houses in America experienced a short period of growth before stagnating in the middle 1950s. With the release in 1957 of the erotically charged Brigitte Bardot film …And God Created Woman, a new era of art houses followed, one that is characterized by the emergence of sexualized advertising, content and stars. As the 1960s came, sex films like The Immoral Mr. Teas played on art film marketing strategies and even screened in many art houses. Gradually, sexploitation films began to dominate art house programs and replace European art films and Hollywood revivals. In this transitional period, however, sexploitation films used key strategies to emulate many art film characteristics, and likewise art films used sexploitation techniques in order to maintain marketability for American distribution and exhibition. By studying the promotion and programming used by art house theatres during this period, this thesis identifies and announces a number of key trends within the dynamic period for art houses. The period is distinguished by its convergence of practices related to prestigious and prurient signs, merging art and sex in ways unique to the era and to the circumstances by which sex films infiltrated art houses and art films pandered to salacious interests. It presents a new perspective on the history of art houses, art cinema, American exhibition, sexploitation films, hardcore pornography and censorship.
