Full textThe oceanic region located off the Senegalese and Mauritanian coasts is one of the most productive one in the world ocean. This is due to the upwelling system, which occurs during the winter season in this region. This seasonality is very specific. In particular, it differs from the well-known upwelling systems located along the eastern coast of the tropical oceans but further poleward such as along Morocco and the Iberian peninsula, the Californian coast, the Peru-Chili and the Benguela. These upwelling systems are maximum in summer. Several studies have investigated their sensitivity to global warming. Early studies have suggested that their intensity may increase in the future, but recent observations do not clear give robust evidence of this behavior. The winter senegalo-mauritanian upwelling system has been largely excluded from these studies, in spite of its crucial role for the socio-economical development of the populations of the surrounding region, whose food and income strongly depend on the halieutic resources. In this context, this study proposes an evaluation of the representation of this system in the CMIP5 climate models, and its response to climate change. Our analysis is based on characteristics of the upwelling in terms of wind forcing and sea surface temperature signature. In spite of some diversity in the model’s ability to represent the senegalo-mauritanian upwelling system, the results suggest that its intensity may rather decrease in the future, primarily because of a reduction of the wind forcing. In a second hand we propose an analysis of the inter-annual to decadal variability of the intensity of the upwelling based on recent reanalyses. This study focuses on the link with the monsoon and with large scale climate modes such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Atlantic Multi- decadal Oscillation (AMO). The link with the decadal variations of the West African Monsoon (WAM) during the opposite season is relatively clear. It is associated with anomalous trajectories of the ITCZ. The indices characterizing the upwelling are not always correlated with each other, showing that they are not yet very robust. They nevertheless indicate a marked variability at the decadal timescale partly associated with the AMO

Full textThe southern end of the Canary current system comprises of an original upwelling center that has so far received little attention. This Ph.D. Thesis focuses on the dynamical functioning of the Southern Senegal-Gambia Upwelling Center (SSUC). We are interested in the upwelling circulation and thermohaline structure on the shelf between the coastline and 100-200 km offshore. Our focus is on the upwelling period (November to May). The main originality of the SSUC compared to other upwelling centers stems from its conti-nental shelf that is broad and shallow (20–30 m over tens of kilometers). The normal state of the system comprises the classical upwelling front but also a well-defined inner-shelf front that separates cold upwelled waters from nearshore warmer waters. We investigate its dynamical functioning using analysed satellite images, in situ data and state-of-the- art 3D numerical simulations. Through a fine-scale analysis of the physical conditions of the SSUC, this work poses the basis of an integrated approach to the Senegalese marine environment functioning. A first part of results is based on the careful examinations and analysis of over 1500 satellite images of sea surface temperature scenes contextualized with respect to wind conditions. Analysis confirm the regularity and stability of the SSUC dynamical functioning (as manifested by the recurrence and persistence of particular SST patterns). The analyses also reveal subtle aspects of its upwelling structure : shelf break cooling of surface waters consistent with internal tide breaking/mixing ; complex interplay between local upwelling and the Mauritanian current off the Cape Verde headland ; complexity of the inner-shelf/mid shelf frontal transition. The amplitude of the diurnal cycle suggests that large uncertainties exist in the SSUC heat budget. The studies limitations underscore the need for continuous in situ measurement in the SSUC, particularly of winds. The dynamical functioning of SSUC is also investigated by means of numerical simulations, using the hydrodynamical Regional Ocean Modeling System ROMS (∆x ≈ 2 km). Different simulations have been carried with varying forcings (climatological or synoptic wind ; fine-scale adjustments of heat flux in coastal area ; presence or absence of tides). Numerical solutions show a good agreement with available satellite and in situ observations. These solutions clarify the dynamical functioning of the system especially in terms of circulation, location of cold water upwelling but also fate of upwelled water through a Lagrangian analysis. We show in particular that the northern part of the SSUC is the main upwelling area. Waters that upwelled in this area predominantly come from the southern of the SSUC, through advection by the Mauritanian current. Lagrangian analysis also revealed the dynamics associated with the coastal area of nursery and nuance the conceptual retention scheme previously admitted. The sensitivity of the dynamics of SSUC to atmospheric forcings is modest with nevertheless some modulations of the cross-shore exchanges that may be important to the ecosystem

Full textThe study of the aeolian material in the sedimentary archives of the NEATO contributes to document the paleoclimatic changes in this region. However, the interpretation of these records is complicated by the fact that proxies used in the deep sea sediments to reconstruct the provenance regions and the associated atmospheric transport patterns remain poorly constrained. A study of the aeolian deposits in the present-day climatic context was carried out on the West African margin in order to improve our understanding of the proxies. In this frame, a mineral dust deposits trap was installed in 2006 on the Senegalese coast, providing a unique aeolian deposits time series with a temporal resolution better than a week. The first part of this study consists in a multi-proxy analysis of the aeolian deposits collected from 2006 to 2009 (including grain-size distribution, clay mineralogy and strontium and neodymium isotopic ratios) and the subsequent development of a calibration of these tracers in terms of provenance regions and transport patterns in the present-day climatic context. In a second part, this calibration was (1) tested against sea surface sediments of the NEATO and then (2) used to decipher the aeolian terrigenous signal recorded during the last 26 000 years in the MD03-2705 core (18°05N; 21°09W). This PhD work contributes to document in which ways this initial present-day calibration of the aeolian proxies can contribute to improve our understanding of the terrigenous signal in NEATO

Full textAlong the coast of North-West Africa, among the richest waters over the word, fish supply is important at both socio-economic and cultural levels. In this region, the small pelagic fish are the most abundant marine resources and are monitored using hydroacoustic stock assessment methods since more than three decades. These surveys have allowed providing to local authorities a sound scientific basis for deciding about the management of pelagic fisheries. A specific challenge is to know the representativity of these surveys with respect to the stocks targeted. In this work, we confirm this representativity for Sardinella aurita stock while for S. maderensis, a part of the stock could have not been sampled and for pour Ilisha africana and Ethmalosa fimbriata these surveys are not the best tool. Furthermore, Northward shifts in the distribution of sardinella in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem are recorded in this work and have been attributed to the redistribution of upwelling intensity and productivity, resulting in the abundance of sardinella decreasing in the inter-tropical coastal region. Here for the first time using independent observational time series, we report a robust northward shift in S. aurita since 1995 and attribute it to the strong ocean warming in the region. The observed spatial shifts in biomass in the last 20 years are of the same order of magnitude as those recorded for surface isotherms. Such changes will impact policy considerations in the management of food security in several West African countries and should be considered with respect to “Intended Nationally Determined Contributions”

Full textThe North West African upwelling system off Morocco, Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal is the most productive system in the world in terms of primary productivity. This productivity results in a large fish biomass dominated by small pelagic fish which are the main living resources exploited in the region. In a context of shared management of fisheries resources by several countries in the region, understanding the factors that control the spatial distribution of populations of small pelagic fish and the evolution of their abundances is a crucial issue for fisheries and the socio-economic development of the region. The main objective of this thesis is to describe the seasonal and interannual variations of the marine environment of the Canary upwelling along the Northwest coast of Africa and to link these variations with the spatio-temporal dynamics of the main small pelagic species of commercial importance of this zone. We have used different sets of data available and developed different approaches in order to have a complete view of the functioning of this ecosystem. Thus, we have combined satellite data, acoustic scientific survey data, fishing statistics and analysis of otolith shapes. Along th NW African coasts ( 10° - 35° N), our data allowed us to identify three regions with a well-differentiated seasonality and intensity of upwelling. The region has a high latitudinal and temporal variability of environmental conditions. The southern part of the zone (between 10° and 24° N) is characterized by warmer and richer Chlorophyll-a waters than the northern part. The majority of the variability of the environmental parameters studied is due to seasonality (> 60%). During the study period (2002-2012), we noted a significant warming trend ranging from 0.01° C to 0.04°C. yr-¹ and a general reinforcement of ipwelling, but a downward trend in Chl a concentration in the whole study area. There is a south-north latitudinal gradient of the phenology of the phytoplankton bloom (period, duration and magnitude of the bloom). However, there are no significant interannual trends in phytoplankton bloom phenology or correlations or trends with the physical parameters of the environment studied (SST, upwelling index, wind). The Canary current ecosystem is characterized by the sardine/ Sardinella pair, Anchovy, althought present in this ecosystem, plays no more important role than in other upwelling systems. The relationships between the abundances of anchovies, sardines and sardinella with environmental parameters have been studied at different scales using generalized additive models (GAM). The results of our study indicate that the spatial and temporal variations of the abundance of anchovy and sardinella are controlled more by the thermal gradient than by the biological productivity. The sardine seems to be more controlled by an "optimal upwelling and temperature windows". We were able for the first time to demonstrate the existence of a temporal alternation of abundance between anchovy and sardine as is known in other upwelling systems. Finally, in order to contribute to the knowledge of population structure of the round sardinella that concern scientists and fisheries managers, we conducted a study of the shape of otoliths. The possible existence of several stocks of sardinella in connection with oceanographic structures do not support the current management policy which considers a single stock off the African NW coast

Full textThis thesis focuses on the study of the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as restoration tools of marine resources and fish stocks management in tropical West Africa. The study involves three MPAs. The first one is the Bamboung MPA, a marine reserve located in estuarine areas (with marine influence), closed to fishing since 2004. The second is the Urok Islands MPA established in 2005 and located in the biosphere Reserve of Bijagos archipelago in the coastal part of Guinea-Bissau. It is divided into three areas and fishing is allowed there with a fishing pressure becoming stronger from the central area to peripheral area. The third MPA is the Banc d‟Arguin National Marine Park located along the coast of Mauritania. It was created in 1976 and fishing activities are restricted. Many AMP were evaluated worldwide and the results are in the main part positive. In tropical zones, the variability of environmental parameters affects the spatial and temporal organization of fish assemblage. Therefore, the MPA establishment in a tropical zone has raised questions about their effectiveness inrelation to the influence of environmental parameters. According to the AMP, spatial or temporal approach will be used to answer questions. Comparison analysis will be used. The analysis of biological data comes after those of the physicochemical parameters that show strong seasonal variability in each MPA. This result justifies the choice of seasonal analysis of biological data in order to minimize the influence of environmental variations.Regarding the Bamboung MPA, the results of global approach clearly confirm that it is an effective tool for restoring marine resources. The seasonal approach shows this role in cold season, but not in hot and wet seasons. In 9 years of protection, the Bamboung MPA contributed to attract big fish in the Bamboung bolon. The spillover effect in Bamboung MPA is not clearly demonstrated according to our results. A downward trend of biological indicators according to the distance to the MPA has been observed especially in hot season and wet season. Similarly, the analysis of indicators related to reproduction does not show that the Bamboung MPA improve fish reproduction. Regarding Urok Islands MPA and Banc d’Arguin National marine Park, the results do not confirm that these AMP are fish stock management tools (improved yields of fishing activities and fish reproduction). However, for Urok islands MPA the observed trends suggest a biomass concentration in the central area, an equilibrium role played by the intermediate area and a role of fish biomass provider of the peripheral area. For Banc d’Arguin National Marine Parc, the inside area seems to contribute to the enrichment of the external area by transferring fish biomass. Non-specific results could be explained by the small data collected in the MPAs. So the idea to conduct a short-term biological monitoring and to analyze reproduction indicators in population level has been considered for the three MPA to find clear results on their role in the management of fish stocks
