Smith, Ian, and Andrea Frangi. Use of Timber in Tall Multi-Storey Buildings. Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed013.

Abstract:

Since the dawn of civilization, timber has been a primary material for achieving great structural engineering feats. Yet during the late 19th century and most of the 20th century it lost currency as a preferred material for construction of large and tall multi-storey building superstructures. This Structural Engineering Document (SED) addresses a reawakening of interest in timber and timber-based products as primary con-struction materials for relatively tall, multi-storey buildings. Emphasis throughout is on holistically addressing various aspects of performance of complete systems, reflecting that major gaps in knowhow relate to design concepts rather than technical information about timber as a material. Special con-sideration is given to structural form, fire vulnerability, and durability aspects for attaining desired building performance over lifespans that can be centuries long.

Abstract:
Materiali per lo studio del diritto antidiscriminatorio is intended to provide a picture of most relevant legislation and jurisprudence in this sphere, at both European Union and national level. Divided into seven thematic sections – Sources, Gender, Age, Disability, Nationality, Race and ethnic origin, Religion and personal convictions – this collection sets up a direct comparison between European legislation and jurisprudence and the Italian enactment decrees. In this manner the editors, Chiara Favilli and Maria Paola Monaco, propose both to academics and to those working in the sector an innovative and useful instrument for combating discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, ethnic group, religion, age or sexual orientation.

Abstract:
Biological materials present the conventional materials scientist with alternative ways of achieving durability, recyclability, and adaptability. Technical materials are commonly designed to resist the initiation of cracks; biological materials control disaster by initiating failure where it can be more closely controlled and the strain energy can be more easily absorbed, at the same time controlling shape so that stress concentrations are avoided in sensitive areas. Most materials are hydrated and soft, achieving stiffness by dehydration and mineralization. The low energy of the predominant hydrogen bonds allows relatively easy breakdown and recycling of the units of biological materials. Since most biological materials are metabolically accessible (obvious exceptions are keratins and wood) they can be recycled and repaired in situ, adapting the organism to changing circumstances internally and externally. At the molecular level, liquid crystallinity is a driving force.

Alternative Concrete – Geopolymer Concrete. Materials Research Forum LLC, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21741/9781644901533.

Full text

Abstract:
Concrete is the most versatile, durable and reliable material and is the most used building material. It requires large amounts of Portland cement which has environmental problems associated with its production. Hence, an alternative concrete – geopolymer concrete is needed. The general aim of this book is to make significant contributions in understanding and deciphering the mechanisms of the realization of the alkali-activated fly ash-based geopolymer concrete and, at the same time, to present the main characteristics of the materials, components, as well as the influence that they have on the performance of the mechanical properties of the concrete. The book deals with in-depth research of the potential recovery of fly ash and using it as a raw material for the development of new construction materials, offering sustainable solutions to the construction industry.
