Abstract:
People in modern industrialized societies live a blessed life relative to those who do not when it comes to some modern conveniences. While many think nothing of flipping on a light switch or running electric appliances, there are people in third world countries could not imagine such things. As service projects are being undertaken to bring such conveniences to those less fortunate, there often is the harsh reality of a strict budget. An item that commands a large portion of said budget is often the diesel generator used to provide the facility with electricity. Generators serving motor loads are typically oversized due to a large kVA starting requirement. This paper addresses an approach to this problem by temporarily restricting the generator fuel supply by pulling back the rack of the mechanical governor reducing the frequency and voltage output as a motor load is switched onto the system. By reducing the voltage and frequency output of the generator, the motor is switched on at a time when its typically poor power factor and resulting kVA requirement is mitigated by the lower voltage and frequency allowing for a smaller generator to be used.

Abstract:
With airports becoming busier and often struggling with insufficient capacity, the efficiency of the airports resource utilisation becomes more and more important all over the world. The efficiency may be improved by integration of the airport operations which historically were handled in separation. More effective resource utilisation would not only smooth the airport operation but also should have a positive environmental impact. The gate allocation problem is one of the important airport operations, which is often solved without considering the links with other airport operations. Modelling and analysis of new constraints which allow the ground movement information to be taken into consideration in the allocation planning in advance as well as design of appropriate solution methods are discussed. It is observed that when the additional information from the ground movement is incorporated in the allocation planning process the number of expected routing conflicts, both around gates and on taxiways, drops. This should results in a smoother airport operation during the day of operation. Data from Manchester Airport is used in this thesis to build the model, as well as to test and to validate the solution methods.

Abstract:
The energy management system (EMS) of hybrid electric vehicle controls the operation of two power plants; electric machine/battery and typically engine. Hence the fuel economy and emissions of hybrid vehicles strongly depend on the EMS. It is known that considering the future trip demand in devising an EMS control strategy enhance the vehicle and component performances. However existing such acausal EMS cannot be used in real time and would require prior knowledge of the trip vehicle speed profile (trip demand). Therefore rule based EMS which considers instantaneous trip demand in devising a control strategy are used. Such causal EMS are real time capable and simple in design. However rule based EMS are tuned for a set of driving cycles and hence their performance is vulnerable in real world driving. The research question is “How to design a real time capable acausal EMS for a plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that can adapt to the uncertainties of real world driving”. In the research, the design and evaluation of a proposed EMS to deal and demonstrate in scenarios expected in real world driving respectively were considered. The proposed rule based acausal EMS is formulated over the estimated vehicle trip energy and driving information. Vehicle trip energy is the electric (battery) energy required to meet the trip demand estimated using known driving information. Driving information that can be considered are driver style, route distance and road types like urban and extra urban, with traffic as a sub function. Unlike vehicle speed, vehicle trip energy is shown to be relatively less dynamic in real world driving. For the proposed EMS evaluation, a commonly used parallel PHEV model was simulated. For driving information EMS was not integrated to a navigation system but manually defined. Evaluation studies were done for a driver, and traffic was not considered for simplicity. In the thesis, vehicle performance and credentials for real world applicability (real time capability and adaptability) of the proposed acausal EMS are demonstrated for various scenarios in real world driving; varied initial SOC, sequence of road types, trip distance and trip energy estimation. Over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) the proposed EMS vehicle performance is compared to a conventional rule based EMS. The proposed EMS fuel economy improvement is up to 11% with 5 times fewer number of engine stop-starts. Similarly in the validation study, with no prior knowledge of trip vehicle speed profile, the fuel economy improvement is up to 29% with 7 times fewer number of engine stop-starts. The simulation duration of the proposed EMS is as good as conventional rule based EMS. Hence the proposed EMS is potentially real time capable. The proposed EMS can adapt to a wide variation in trip energy (±15%) estimation and still perform better than the conventional rule based EMS. The proposed EMS can tolerate variation in trip demand estimation and no prior knowledge of trip vehicle speed profile is required, unlike other acausal EMS studies in the literature. A new PHEV EMS has been formulated. Through simulation it has been seen to deliver benefit in vehicle performance and real world applicability for varied scenarios as expected in real world driving. The key new step was to use vehicle trip energy in the formulation, which enabled rule based EMS to be acausal and potentially real time capable.

Abstract:
The main goal of this research programme was to explore the neurophysiological correlates of human motor control in real-world scenarios and define mechanism-specific markers that could eventually be employed as targets of novel neurorehabilitation practice. As a result of recent developments in mobile technologies it is now possible to observe subjects' behaviour and monitor neurophysiological activity whilst they perform natural activities freely. Investigations in real-world scenarios would shed new light on mechanisms of human motor control previously not observed in laboratory settings and how they could be exploited to improve rehabilitative interventions for the neurologically impaired. This research programme was focussed on identifying cortical mechanisms involved in both upper- (i.e. reaching) and lower-limb (i.e. locomotion) motor control. Complementary results were obtained by the simultaneous recordings of kinematic, electromyographic and electrocorticographic signals. To study motor control of the upper-limb, a lab­based setup was developed, and the reaching movement of healthy young individuals was observed in both stable and unstable (i.e. external perturbation) situations. Robot-mediated force-field adaptation has the potential to be employed in rehabilitation practice to promote new skills learning and motor recovery. The muscular (i.e. intermuscular couplings) and neural (i.e. spontaneous oscillations and cortico­muscular couplings) indicators of the undergoing adaptation process were all symbolic of adaptive strategies employed during early stages of adaptation. The medial frontal, premotor and supplementary motor regions appeared to be the principal cortical regions promoting adaptive control and force modulation. To study locomotion control, a mobile setup was developed and daily life human activities (i.e. walking while conversing, walking while texting with a smartphone) were investigated outside the lab. Walking in hazardous environments or when simultaneously performing a secondary task has been demonstrated to be challenging for the neurologically impaired. Healthy young adults showed a reduced motor performance when walking in multitasking conditions, during which whole-brain and task-specific neural correlates were observed. Interestingly, the activity of the left posterior parietal cortex was predictive of the level of gait stability across individuals, suggesting a crucial role of this area in gait control and determination of subject specific motor capabilities. In summary, this research programme provided evidence on different cortical mechanisms operative during two specific scenarios for "real­world" motor behaviour in and outside the laboratory-setting in healthy subjects. The results suggested that identification of neuro-muscular indicators of specific motor control mechanisms could be exploited in future "real-world" rehabilitative practice.

This research project is about product development strategy and practice in the automobile industry. Specifically, it concerns the transformation of Rover Group body and tool development capability over four years from 1993 to 1997. A single Rover Body and Pressings organisation was created in 1991. It encompassed the functions of Body Engineering, Press Tool Engineering, and Press Tool Manufacturing. As Engineering Director the Author had the opportunity to directly influence a significant portion of the body product creation process. At the start of the research period the product development performance of Rover Body and Pressings was weak. Major investments in new press equipment could not depend on in-house die technology. Quality and cost delivery incurred customer dissatisfaction. Resulting from the research are three innovations: The Engineering Quality Assurance Procedure was implemented as a disciplined stage/gate quality management system. A focused manufacturing strategy was implemented for die manufacturing based on die size. A new engineering design methodology was established utilising the scientific principles of metal forming technology as an integrated element in the design process. These innovations were applied within the strategic framework of a new model describing a system view of the product creation process for body, at enterprise level. The new product development process strategy was partially applied to two new vehicle programmes. One vehicle has since been initiated and delivered from within the new framework. Strategic targets were defined for product development at Rover Body and Pressings covering product quality, development lead time, press tool cost and programme financial budget. The targets for quality and lead time were met during the research period. Although substantial progress is evident in physical performance the targets for press tool cost and programme budget were not met. The major elements of the product development strategy applied in this research remain in place. The transfer of the strategic model of concurrent engineering to a wider context was demonstrated by applying it as part of the Rover Group product development reengineering project.

Abstract:
At the beginning of American involvement in the Second World War the United States Navy developed a new class of vessel that had a tremendous impact during World War II. This vessel was the Patrol Torpedo boat. Originally designed to conduct torpedo attacks on enemy surface vessels, the PT boat successfully adapted multiple roles in addition to being a torpedo attack craft. The versatility of the Patrol Torpedo boat during World War II serving in these various roles and as an element of the US Navy has not been recognized by recent scholarship. Using primary sources from the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, and secondary sources this paper demonstrates that the Patrol Torpedo boat was a weapon that exemplified economy of force. A small inexpensive naval vessel was able to replace larger ships and work with different elements of the fleet to deny the use of coastal waters to the enemy.

Abstract:
Ford Motor Company embarked on a new engine programme, called the Rocam Engine Programme, in the year 2001. This engine was developed specifically for the European market. The customer demand rate was small initially, but ramped up slowly over time. During the low production volume period, this engine was introduced into the local market to test the publics’ response. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The local market grew considerably in a short space of time. During the same time-period, the European customer demand increased, unexpectedly, by approximately 60 percent. The additional production volume placed an enormous amount of pressure on the Engine Plant facility. Two of the production lines in particular, were taking huge strain. These lines were not producing the demand quantities, and the product quality levels were dropping quickly. The research project is based purely on the lean manufacturing principles and philosophies. The aim of the study is to identify the deficiencies on these two production lines, thereby allowing corrective action to be taken. The research methodology comprised of the following steps: · A literature study was performed to give the reader a better understanding of the principles and philosophies of lean manufacturing. · A second literature study was also performed to get a better understanding of the continuous improvement philosophies of lean manufacturing. · A current state map, which depicts the existing situation on the line, was developed for both production lines. The existing situation was then compared to the fundamental principles and philosophies of a lean manufacturer. In this way the deficiencies were highlighted to management. Several recommendations were made regarding the data obtained in the study. The key ones are as follows: · First-line management needs to be trained and coached into managing their business by using quality, cost and delivery as the key performance metrics. They also have to be trained in team dynamics. This will promote cross-functional brainstorming and problem solving sessions. · The accurate collection and processing of base-measurement data should be treated as cardinal, and road shows by production personnel should be presented every week to top management. This will ensure that data is regularly collected and corrective action is continually taken to improve the current situation. Operating personnel needs to be trained in this discipline. Management needs to be serious about implementing lean production principles by enforcing these road shows. · The objectives of Kaizen, production management and the supporting departments (including maintenance and MP&L) ought to be the same in the interest of maximum productivity i.e. leaning towards world class. · First-line management must develop formal structured plans that will rectify the current on-line situation. Plans must include medium to longterm objective setting. Senior management need to coach the first-line management in this discipline. · Few production systems can be implemented without the necessary infrastructure conducive to supporting it. An infrastructure where production gets involved and takes ownership (policy deployment with regards to lines of communication and responsibility between Area Managers, Production Coordinators, Team Leaders and contractors) is what is required. Lean manufacturing deficiencies on the two production lines have been identified. A detailed implementation plan, which needs to be developed by the Ford Production System department, needs to be given to management. This plan needs to address the identified deficiencies in a timely manner that will assist in the Engine Plant meeting their production targets.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was the development of a new detection method of partial discharge (PD) activity in the stator of an electrical hybrid supercar fed by a silicon carbide converter, for which detection with common methods make it very difficult to separate PD pulses from switching noise. This work focused on the analysis and detection of partial discharges making use of an antenna, a peak detector, and an oscilloscope capable of capturing the electromagnetic pulses emitted during PD activity. Validation of the proposed method was done by comparing the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) detected by this system with the one obtained from an optical method of proven accuracy, with different rise times and samples. Further development of this method, if proved successful on a full stator, can help increasing the overall reliability of the car, potentially allowing for real time detection of PD activity and predictive maintenance before failure of the insulation system in a hybrid vehicle.

Abstract:
The current thesis explores semantic and action effects on visual perception and specifically how higher-level knowledge can co-affect the process of visual perception, along with the well established effects of low level image characteristics, such as colour, image/object saliency and general gist of the scene. Recent evidence on object recognition supports perceptual grouping effects of familiar pairings of functionally interacting objects. This leads to an advantage for their perception as compared with objects positioned in a non-interacting configuration, in cases where there are attentional limitations in perception. Similar effects were previously reported in clinical cases of people diagnosed with neglect (Humphreys & Riddoch, 2001, 2007; Riddoch et al, 2003, 2006), but the fact that they are also present in normally functioning individuals (Green & Hummel, 2006) makes them a clear example of higher order effects on perception. Given the evidence about the abstract nature of the information stored in visual memory and the fact that orientation is part of the spatial information related to an object representation, our first series of experiments aimed at further exploring the nature of this perceptual grouping and whether objects separation would have an effect on it. By combining this paradigm with a paradigm used to explore linguistic factors of perceiving space (Carlson-Radvansky & Radvansky, 1996; Carlson-Radvansky, Covey & Lattanzi, 1999; Carlson-Radvansky & Tang, 2000), we additionally explored the effect of functional interactions at higher levels of post-perceptual processing. We manipulated the locations of various pairs of objects as well as the semantic and functional relationship between them to explore if spatial configurations affect the way people talk about the relationship of the objects in the same way as they affect the same objects‟ recognition. The results revealed a difference, with the same distance manipulation affecting linguistic descriptions of spatial relationships between pairs of objects but having no effect in their perceptual grouping. One of the aims of this thesis is the interpretation of such effects according to a recently growing body of evidence on the interaction between action and perception systems. These systems which were traditionally considered to be two separate disciplines seem to connect, with information from action systems feeding on perceptual systems. Through such an interaction, for example, information about the functionally related objects could lead to their perceptual grouping. A series of experiments have demonstrated effects of action affordances on object perception and their combined results seem to imply pre-attentive effects on object perception independent of the person‟s intention to act on an object (Riddoch, Humphreys, Edwards, Baker & Wilson, 2002; Tipper, Paul & Hayes, 2006; Symes, Ellis & Tucker, 2007).To further explore the role of functional relationships and action affordances in natural scene viewing, a second series of experiments was designed. These experiments also provided evidence to an old debate about the nature of visual memory and its organisation, adding further evidence for the role of semantic relationship and action affordances in the memory encoding of a scene. This series of experiments took advantage of the phenomenon of object prioritization during unexpected object onsets or feature changes while viewing real world scenes (Brockmole & Henderson, 2005a). Using a variation of classic change detection paradigms, eye-tracking data were recorded to measure at which point action affordance manipulations would have an effect and to reveal whether object functionality changes can still produce attention capture (quantified as fixation probability to the object of interest), similarly to previously tested semantic changes. Functionality manipulation was achieved by orientation changes of a critical object in the scene, but in a way which constitutes it non functional to the specific context. By comparing action affordance interference during object onsets against interference during object orientation changes we differentiated between pre-attentive and post-selection mechanisms. Our results indicate that although there is no evidence of pre-attentive modulation of object prioritization, action affordances do have an effect in post-selection mechanisms, with functionally inconsistent objects attracting attention faster and affecting the encoding of an object in the scene representation during memory guided prioritization but not during oculomotor capture. Our results also support the existence of two separate mechanisms for object prioritization. As a summary, this family of semantic relationships, action affordances and the interplay between action and perception systems has been tested during my PhD research from the very early stages of perception until post perceptual and linguistic accounts of the perceived image. Their role in attention capture and their mediating role to visual memory have also been explored using eye-tracking technology and realistic and rich in information real world scenes. Overall my thesis is oriented towards the aspects that tie all these effects together and further explores the role of action affordances in memory encoding.

O tratamento de reabilitação motora compreende o emprego de um conjunto de técnicas terapêuticas que visam incitar a ocorrência da plasticidade cerebral, atividade fisiológica na qual o sistema nervoso central busca estabelecer novas ligações sinápticas para promover a recuperação da função neuromuscular. Observando-se as técnicas atualmente empregadas e fundamentando-se no fato da criança apresentar alta capacidade de sofrer plasticidade neural, decidiu-se desenvolver um sistema mecatrônico interativo como ferramenta de auxílio ao tratamento de reabilitação de crianças com deficiência motora nas pernas. O presente trabalho descreve a implementação deste sistema, composto por uma bicicleta instrumentada, integrada a um ambiente virtual de aparência lúdica, desenvolvidos com o objetivo de proporcionar a execução dos exercícios físicos de forma divertida e cativante, estimulando a ocorrência de uma plasticidade neural mais rápida e eficiente. Ao final do trabalho são relatadas algumas demonstrações práticas realizadas, onde foram avaliados os níveis de motivação das crianças, além de alguns depoimentos médicos a respeito das expectativas do projeto.
The rehabilitation treatment consists in a set of therapeutic techniques that try to stimulate cerebral plasticity. Cerebral plasticity is a physiologic phenomenon where the brain searches for new neural connections to supply the deficient function. lt is known that the young brain has a high cerebral plasticity capacity. Based on this, an interactive mechatronic system was developed to assist the rehabilitation treatment of children with motor disturbances in their legs. This system is composed of an instrumented bicycle and an entertaining virtual world generated by computer, developed to stimulate the child to accomplish the physical activities in a captivating and fun way and, consequently, increasing the cerebral plasticity performance. ln the end of this document some practical experiments were reported, showing the motivation of the children. Some medical opinions regarding the expectations of the project were also reported.

Abstract:
This study used the word processor as a tool for written output to examine the effects of an experiential 'Write to Read' program on typing performance, decoding strategies and successive processing in learning disordered children with motor dysfunction. A case history approach was taken in view of the small number of subjects available, and in order to adequately describe each individual's unique and complex cognitive motor profile. Subjects involved in the study were three male students in a Junior Learning Assistance Class in a Lower Mainland British Columbia school district elementary school. Each of the students had a history of poor motor performance, poor handwriting and delayed reading ability. The three subjects were involved in an eight week intervention program which taught keyboarding and word processing techniques using the 'Write to Read' program, a systematic method of training the motor skills required. It was hypothesized that, if the learning disabled student with poor motor skills could use the word processor as an adjunct to handwriting, the improved legibility would facilitate consistent decoding by the student of his own work, reinforcing acquisition of early reading skills. Within the case history format, a theoretical frame of reference based on the simultaneous - successive information processing model was chosen and a limited time series design measured the effects of the intervention on successive processing as determined by a block sequencing task (Das, Kirby and Jarman, 1980). The data was collected for each student and graphed for visual inspection, graphic analysis and statistical analysis. One subject showed a stable and significant intervention effect, and no stable trends or significant results for successive processing were found in the other two subjects. Rates of word processing output increased over the course of the study and the number of errors declined. All subjects made progress in measures of decoding and word analysis. Implications for future research and professional practice were described.

Abstract:
Holistic processing and left-side bias are both behavioral markers of expert face recognition. In contrast, expertise in Chinese character recognition involves left-side bias but reduced holistic processing (Hsiao & Cottrell, 2009). Here I hypothesized that this reduction in holistic processing may be related to writing rather than reading experience. In Experiment 1, I tested Chinese literates who could read and write Chinese characters fluently (Writers), and Chinese literates who had limited writing practices and thus had reading performance far exceeding their writing ability (Limited-writers). I found that Writers perceived Chinese characters less holistically than Limited-writers. In contrast to what previous research suggested, reduction in holistic processing in Chinese readers depended on writing experience instead of reading performance. In addition, reading performance was affected by font familiarity and context for Limited-writers but not Writers. Writing experience seems to enhance analytic processing and awareness of orthographic components of Chinese characters, which may in turn facilitate reading in unfamiliar fonts. By contrast, both Writers and Limited-writers showed a similar level of left-side bias in processing symmetric Chinese characters, suggesting that left-side bias is a consistent expertise marker for orthographic processing uninfluenced by writing experience. In Experiment 2, I investigate the developmental trend of holistic processing in Chinese character recognition and its relationship with reading and writing abilities by testing Chinese children who were learning Chinese at a public elementary school in Hong Kong on these abilities. I found that the holistic processing effect of Chinese characters in children was reduced as they reached higher grades; this reduction was driven by enhanced Chinese literacy rather than age. In addition, I found that writing performance predicts reading performance through reduced holistic processing as a mediator. Overall, the results of this study suggest that writing hones analytic processing, which is essential for expert Chinese character recognition, and in turn facilitates learning to read in Chinese. This study is also the first to identify Limited-writers as a window onto basic processes of reading.

Abstract:
People with some types of motor disabilities who wish to generate text using a computer can find the process both fatiguing and time-consuming. These problems can be alleviated by reducing the quantity of keystrokes they must make, and one approach is to allow the user to enter shortened, abbreviated input, which is then re-expanded for them, by a program ‘filling in the gaps’. Word Prediction is one approach, but comes with drawbacks, one of which is the requirement that generally the user must type the first letters of their intended word, regardless of how unrepresentative they may consider those letters to be. Abbreviation Expansion allows the user to type reduced forms of many words in a way they feel represents them more effectively. This can be done by the omission of one or more letters, or the replacement of letter sequences with other, usually shorter, sequences. For instance, the word ‘hyphenate might be shortened to ‘yfn8’, by leaving out some letters and replacing the ‘ph’ and ‘ate’ with the shorter but phonetically similar ‘f’ and ‘8’. ‘Fixed Abbreviation Expansion’ requires the user to memorise a set of correspondences between abbreviations and the full words which they represent. While this enables useful keystroke savings to be made, these come alongside an increased cognitive load and potential for error. Where a word is encountered for which there is no preset abbreviation, or for which the user cannot remember one, keystroke savings may be lost. ‘Flexible Abbreviation Expansion’ allows the user to leave out whichever letters they feel to be ‘less differentiating' and jump straight ahead to type those they feel are most ‘salient’ and most characterise the word, choosing abbreviations ‘on the fly’. The need to memorise sets of correspondences is removed, as the user can be offered all candidates for which the abbreviation might be a representation, usually in small sets on screen. For useful savings to be made, the intended word must regularly be in the first or second set for quick selection, or the system might attempt to place the intended word at the very top of its list as frequently as possible. Thus it is important to generate and rank the candidates effectively, so that high probability words can be offered in a shortlist. Lower-ranking candidates can be offered in secondary lists which are not immediately displayed. This can reduce both the cognitive load and keystrokes needed for selection. The thesis addresses the task of reducing the number of keystrokes needed for text creation with a large, expressive vocabulary, using a new approach to flexible abbreviation expansion. To inform the solution, two empirical studies were run to gather letter-level statistics on the abbreviation methods of twenty-nine people, under different degrees of constriction (that is, different restrictions on the numbers of characters by which to reduce). These studies showed that with a small amount of priming, people would abbreviate in regular ways, both shared between users, and repeated through the data from an individual. Analysis showed the most common strategies to be vowel deletion, phonetic replacement, loss of double letters, and word truncation. Participants reduced the number of letters in their texts by between 25% (judged to maintain a high degree of comprehensibility) up to 40% (judged to be a maximum degree of brevity whilst still retaining comprehensibility). Informed by these results, an individual-word-level algorithm was developed. For each input abbreviation, a set of candidates is produced, ranked in such a way as to potentially save substantial keystrokes when used across a whole text. A variety of statistical and linguistic techniques, often also used in spelling checking and correction, are used to rank them so that the most probable will be easiest to select, and with fewest keystrokes. The algorithm works at the level of the individual word, without looking at surrounding context. Evaluation of the algorithm demonstrated that it outperforms its nearest comparable alternative, of ranking word lists exclusively by word frequency. The evaluation was performed on the data from the second empirical study, using vocabulary sizes of 2-, 10-, 20- and 30-thousand words. The results show the algorithm to be of potential benefit for use as a component of a flexible abbreviation expansion system. Even with the overhead of selection of the intended word, useful keystroke savings could still be attained. It is envisaged that such a system could be implemented on many platforms, including as part of an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device, and an email system on a standard PC, thus making typed communication for the user group more comfortable and expansive.

Abstract The preverbal vocalisation up to the first word, feeding skills as well as motor development until the first steps of ELBW preterm infants without disability were compared in this descriptive study to those of healthy full-term infants. In addition, preverbal and feeding skills were studied in relation to gross motor movement patterns. The preverbal development of preterm infants proceeded according to the same temporal schedule as that of full-term infants, however, preterm infants failed to produce several vocalisation skills that full-term infants presented. The preterm infants increased their vocalisation slower than the full-term infants in the beginning of each of the developmental stages. The difference between the preterm and the full-term infants grew when approaching syllables, syllable combinations, and words. The preterm infants reached the first word approximately two months later than the full-term infants. The suckling of preterm infants was either disorganised or dysfunctional, while normal or disorganised in the case of full-term infants. The preterm infants reached the spoon-feeding skills approximately at the same (corrected) ages as the full-term infants, but the transitions to new stages were difficult. Half of the preterm infants suffered from feeding problems while only two of the full-term infants had feeding problems. Both the preterm and full-term infants reached vocalisation and feeding skills in relation to gross motor movement patterns earlier than assumed according to the predominant clinical knowledge. The vocalisation and feeding skills did not seem to be dependent upon the gross motor development
Tiivistelmä Tässä kuvailevassa tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin tiiviissä seurannassa erittäin ennenaikaisina ja pienipainoisina syntyneiden lasten esileksikaalista ääntelyä ensisanaan asti sekä syömistaitojen ja motoriikan kehitystä ensiaskeliin asti. Tuloksia verrattiin terveiden, täysiaikaisina syntyneiden lasten vastaaviin taitoihin. Lisäksi ääntelyn ja syömisen kehitystä tarkasteltiin suhteessa karkeamotoristen taitojen kehitysaikatauluun. Ennenaikaisesti syntyneiden lasten ääntely kehittyi saman aikataulun mukaan kuin täysiaikaisten lasten ääntely. Ennenaikaisesti syntyneet lapset jättivät kuitenkin väliin taitoja, jotka täysiaikaisina syntyneet lapset saavuttivat. Siirryttäessä uusille ääntelyn ja kielen kehitystasoille ennenaikaisina syntyneiden lasten ääntelyn määrä lisääntyi hitaammin kuin täysiaikaisina syntyneiden lasten ääntelyn määrä. Ero ennenaikaisina ja täysiaikaisina syntyneiden lasten kehityksessä kasvoi lähestyttäessä tavuja, tavuyhdistelmiä ja sanoja. This study presents detailed phonetic and acoustic analyses of the speech characteristics of two new cases of Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS). Participants include a 48-year-old female who began speaking with an "Eastern European" accent following a traumatic brain injury, and a 45-year-old male who presented with a "British" accent following a subcortical cerebral vascular accident (CVA). Identical samples of the participants' pre- and post-morbid speech were obtained, thus affording a new level of control in the study of Foreign Accent Syndrome. The speech tasks consisted of oral readings of the Grandfather Passage and 18 real words comprised of the stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, /d/, /g/ combined with the peripheral vowels /i/, /a/ and /u/ and ending in a voiceless stop. Computer-based acoustic measures included: 1) voice onset time (VOT), 2) vowel durations, 3) whole word durations, 4) first, second and third formant frequencies, and 5) fundamental frequency. Formant frequencies were measured at three points in the vowel duration: a) 20%, b) 50%, and c) 80% to assess differences in vowel 'onglides' and 'offglides'. The phonetic analysis provided perceptual identification of the major phonetic features associated with the foreign quality of participant's FAS speech, while acoustic measures allowed precise quantification of these features. Results indicated evidence of backing of consonant and vowel productions for both participants. The implications for future research and clinical applications are also considered.

Nella tesi, è stato indagato un particolare aspetto della disfunzione esecutiva nella MP espressa quando è richiesto di selezionare le parole nel contesto di alternative in competizione, cercando differenze in relazione all'insorgenza clinica dei sintomi motori. A livello neurostrutturale, sono state esplorate le alterazioni della sostanza grigia e bianca nelle sottopopolazioni di MP, verificando se la capacità di selezionare le parole è associata ad indici di integrità della materia sostanza grigia e bianca nelle sottopopolazioni di PD. Infine, a livello neurofunzionale, è stato esplorato se la connettività delle regioni cerebrali associate alla disfunzione esecutiva in MP è modulata dalla riserva cognitiva, un fattore di efficienza cognitiva dovuto ad esperienze di vita cognitivamente stimolanti che possono contribuire alla resilienza nel fronteggiare al meglio la neurodegenerazione. The following study was conducted at an upper secondary school in Sweden and attempts to explore the question of what influences male pupils’ reading habits. Many quantitative international studies, including PISA, PIRLS and IEA Reading Literacy, have sought to answer this question, but only partially succeeded due to the limitations of their methods. Therefore, this study seeks to explore this question in more depth using qualitative methods, including interviews and classroom observations, but also minor tests. Two facts which the previously mentioned international studies have found is that boys and particularly immigrant boys tend to have worse reading results than their counterparts. It is therefore the aim of this study to study four male students in upper secondary school; of which two are native Swedes and the other two are unaccompanied refugee children; one from Afghanistan and the other from Morocco. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, necessity was found to be the single most important factor for the reading habits of these four pupils; especially the two refugees. Both refugees learnt to read under harsh circumstances in madrassas in their respective home countries. Moreover, the Moroccan pupil learnt to speak and read Spanish fluently during his seven years as a homeless child. Furthermore, in the absence of necessity, interest was found to be decisive in determining the pupils’ reading habits. In addition to this, the study theorizes that an interest in reading generally arises before the ability to read and not vice versa. However, teachers can in fact affect their pupils’ reading habits even in upper secondary school.

In recent years, there are signs of economic recovery in automotive industry, which included service related industries, cosmetology, and automotive department stores. In the pursuit of efficiency and refined contemporary, minor maintenance works and quick maintenance of service quality is uneven, has been gradually unable to meet consumer. Therefore, a lot of large chain automotive department stores have set up. This study set Jhen Pian Yi Motor World as the research object to explore the inner and external environment of automotive industry, then apply AHP for the future shop extension of Jhen Pian Yi Motor World, to set up large-scale or regional-based automotive department store in Kaohsiung area. The study results showed the most important decision factor of shop extension in large automotive department store is market variables, the most important factor is demographic variables in regional-based automotive department store. In the choice of shop extension, whether it is the establishment of large automobile department or regional-based automotive department store, Fengshan District is the best location. Decision objectives were different, but at the same level and asked to discuss the differences in terms of decision-making behavior, this study is unique and innovative. The main academic contribution of this study is based on sensitivity analysis, to understand whether the market laggards have a chance to beat the market leader.

Embodied accounts contend that word meaning is grounded in sensory-motor representation. In support of this view, research has found rapid motor priming effects for words like eagle or shoe, which differ as to whether they are typically associated with an up or down spatial direction. These priming effects are held to be the result of motor representations evoked as an obligatory part of understanding the meaning of a word. In a series of experiments, we show that prime words associated with up or down spatial locations produce vertical perturbations in the horizontal movements of a computer mouse, but that these effects are contingent either on directing conscious attention to the spatial meaning of the word, or on the inclusion of the primed spatial direction in the response set, and that this is true even for strongly spatial words such as up and down. These results show that the motor representations associated with such words are not automatically evoked during reading. We discuss implications for claims that spatial representations reflect our embodied perception of the world.

abstract: The activation of the primary motor cortex (M1) is common in speech perception tasks that involve difficult listening conditions. Although the challenge of recognizing and discriminating non-native speech sounds appears to be an instantiation of listening under difficult circumstances, it is still unknown if M1 recruitment is facilitatory of second language speech perception. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of M1 associated with speech motor centers in processing acoustic inputs in the native (L1) and second language (L2), using repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) to selectively alter neural activity in M1. Thirty-six healthy English/Spanish bilingual subjects participated in the experiment. The performance on a listening word-to-picture matching task was measured before and after real- and sham-rTMS to the orbicularis oris (lip muscle) associated M1. Vowel Space Area (VSA) obtained from recordings of participants reading a passage in L2 before and after real-rTMS, was calculated to determine its utility as an rTMS aftereffect measure. There was high variability in the aftereffect of the rTMS protocol to the lip muscle among the participants. Approximately 50% of participants showed an inhibitory effect of rTMS, evidenced by smaller motor evoked potentials (MEPs) area, whereas the other 50% had a facilitatory effect, with larger MEPs. This suggests that rTMS has a complex influence on M1 excitability, and relying on grand-average results can obscure important individual differences in rTMS physiological and functional outcomes. Evidence of motor support to word recognition in the L2 was found. Participants showing an inhibitory aftereffect of rTMS on M1 produced slower and less accurate responses in the L2 task, whereas those showing a facilitatory aftereffect of rTMS on M1 produced more accurate responses in L2. In contrast, no effect of rTMS was found on the L1, where accuracy and speed were very similar after sham- and real-rTMS. The L2 VSA measure was indicative of the aftereffect of rTMS to M1 associated with speech production, supporting its utility as an rTMS aftereffect measure. This result revealed an interesting and novel relation between cerebral motor cortex activation and speech measures.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to investigate the marketing communication practices of car dealerships, in order to identify what factors are considered in the selection of the marketing communication mix incorporated in the marketing communication strategy. Furthermore, identify and establish an understanding of the marketing communication mix elements used by car dealerships in their marketing communication strategies. A qualitative research approach was followed in this paper. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with marketing personnel of various car dealerships in Gauteng, South Africa. In this paper, a qualitative content analysis was followed, and Atlas.ti version 10 computer software was used to generate themes. The study uncovered that car dealerships use various marketing communication mix elements to achieve their marketing communication objectives, such as creating dealership brand awareness, stimulating sales, and closing sales transactions. The study revealed also uncovered that internet is also used by car dealerships in executing marketing communication strategies. The study revealed the internal and external factors considered in planning and executing marketing communication strategies and campaigns. The study further discovered that these marketing communication elements are not used in isolation, but support each other in conveying marketing messages that lead to the attainment of various marketing communication objectives. The findings revealed that despite the use of radio and print media, social media types are increasingly being used by dealerships to share information with existing customers and potential customers regarding the dealerships‟ products and special offers, although the use of social media platforms varied. The study also discovered that car dealerships experience some challenges in planning and executing marketing communication strategies and campaigns. Recommendations to stakeholders in the motor industry and future research directions are provided.
