Abstract:
In Sub-Saharan Africa, two out of five children are malnourished and malnutrition causes almost half of the child deaths (45%). Mothers are the primary caretaker of children's health, but unfortunately, most of the mothers, are not empowered in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the role of mother’s empowerment in the reduction of malnutrition (stunting, wasting, and underweight) among children under five years of age in twenty-two Sub-Saharan African countries. Cross-sectional data from the most recent Demographic Health Survey (2011-2016) of twenty-two countries are used to analyze the relationship between mother's empowerment and child malnutrition through the binary logistic regression analysis. Results show that the countries with low empowerment, the prevalence of malnutrition is high. Mother empowerment is found to be a statistically significant predictor in reducing malnutrition. Mother’s education, body mass index, and age at first birth proved to be a strong predictor for reducing malnutrition. Household wealth index and household locality also have a statistically significant impact on the reduction of malnutrition. At the household level, malnutrition of children can be minimized by empowering boosting their self-esteem, self-confidence, economic resources, social resources, awareness and decision making.

Abstract:
SummaryIn contrast to the extensive knowledge on the association between women’s empowerment and the nutritional status of children under the age of five, relatively little is known about the influence of women’s empowerment on adolescents’ nutritional status. This study aimed to assess the association between women’s empowerment and gender inequalities in adolescent nutritional status. Data were from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) covering the period 1997 to 2015, and consisted of 16,683 observations from 13,396 adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 years born in 6781 families. Three indicators of women’s empowerment were used: mother’s education, mother’s bargaining power and mother’s working status. Multivariate linear regression with robust standard errors was used to examine whether and how these indicators of women’s empowerment influenced adolescent nutritional status. Interaction terms were added to analyse how the association between women’s empowerment and adolescent nutritional status differed by gender. The results showed that mother’s education and mother’s working status were significantly associated with adolescent nutritional status, particularly with height-for-age. Adolescents of well-educated mothers had a higher height-for-age while those who were raised by mothers with a blue-collar job had a lower height-for-age. Although no gender differences were found for height-for-age, gender differences for BMI-for-age were obvious, with boys having a lower BMI-for-age than girls. Interactions between indicators of mother’s empowerment and gender showed that the gender gap in BMI-for-age was smaller for adolescents of more educated mothers. However, further analyses of food consumption patterns showed that boys whose mothers were more educated consumed more fast food and had higher instant noodle consumption than girls, thus suggesting gender bias in new disguise.

The incidence of single-parent families has been rising continuously where the divorce has become a popular solution for people in seeking the final clarity towards the marriage problems. This figure is consistent with the current trend worldwide upon this topic of single mothers. An enormous increase in the number of single mothers due to divorce has become a reasonable approach for the people in seeking the final clarity towards the marriage problems. In Malaysia, single mothers can be classified as in two variables which are parental death and spousal separation or divorce; parenting is a tough job without a spouse helping in a child's development. Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Stunting is a condition of failure to thrive under 5-year-old due to chronic malnutrition causing the children become too short for their age. The contribution of this research is to prevent and reduce stunting through Stunting Early Detection training. AIM: The objective of the current research is to develop a model for mother empowerment in preventing and intervention stunting in children through stunting early detection training. METHODS: Phase I is the development of a mother empowerment model in the prevention and intervention of stunting in children using a survey with a cross sectional design. Phase II is the implementation of the model using Quasi Experimental Nonrandomized Prepost Control Group Design. RESULTS: The results of the study obtained that mothers who had good characteristics increased their knowledge 0.423 (p = 0.000). Mothers who have good knowledge increase their mother commitment 0.230 (p = 0.004), mothers who have a good commitment reduce stunting in children 0.448 (p = 0.000), mothers who have good knowledge increase family support 0.236 (p = 0.040), and good family support reduces stunting 0.257 (p = 0.011). CONCLUSION: A new finding is the formation of a Mother Empowerment Model in the Prevention and Intervention of Stunting through Stunting Early Detection Training where mother commitment is the most influential factor.

Abstract:
Exclusive breastfeeding is very important for baby's growth and development. In 2015, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Bali Province still has not reached the expected target number. The motivation of a mother is crucial in giving exclusive breastfeeding for six months. One of the factors that influence the motivation of exclusive breastfeeding is the mother’s employment status. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the employment status of mothers with the motivation of exclusive breastfeeding. This study was a correlative study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 90 nursing mothers who had babies aged 0-6 months obtained by purposive sampling technique. Data collection was used a questionnaire. The chi-square test showed p value 0,003 (p < 0.05) which means that there was a relationship between the employment status of mothers with the motivation of exclusive breastfeeding. The results of this study is expected to be a picture for health workers to provide health promotion about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and to improve community empowerment in an effort to increase the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding. Mothers is expected to actively seek information about exclusive breastfeeding so that the mother's motivation in giving exclusive breastfeeding increases.

Abstract:
Introduction: The diagnosis of autistic disorder may impose stress on the child’s parents especially the mother of the baby. Raising a child with autistic disorder reduces parents' quality of life. This study examined the effect of group therapy using a cognitive approach on empowerment in the mothers of children with autistic disorder. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was carried out with 80 mothers of children with the autistic disorder. They referred to Autism Society Rehabilitation Center in Tabriz, Iran. The mothers were randomly allocated into intervention and control groups. The intervention group was divided into 4 groups of 10, and each group participated in 10 sessions of group therapy using the cognitive approach. The control group received the routine care. Data were collected using the Family Empowerment Scale (FES) before the intervention and two months after the intervention. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics [t-test, χ2, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)] via the SPSS software. Results: The independent t-test showed that the means of total empowerment and its dimensions had no statistically significant differences before the intervention. However, after the intervention, such differences between the groups were statistically significant (P < 0.001); so that the mothers in the intervention group achieved higher scores on empowerment and its dimensions compared with the control group. Conclusion: Group therapy using the cognitive approach can be used by healthcare professionals in rehabilitation centers for empowering the mothers of children with autistic disorder.

Abstract:
Empowerment is often cited as a fundamental component of health promotion strategies. Anecdotes suggest that Save the Children's integrated nutrition project empowers local women and health volunteers. The aim of this research was to document the degree to which this is being accomplished. Using qualitative methodologies, we conducted a cross-sectional assessment to compare self-reported changes in identified empowerment domains among 17 program health volunteers and 20 mothers involved in a child nutrition intervention and among five Women's Union leaders and five mothers in a non-intervention comparison commune. Intervention mothers reported increased knowledge, confidence, and information sharing about child-care and feeding, while non-intervention mothers reported minimal changes in these domains. Both intervention health volunteers and non-intervention Women's Union leaders expressed improvements in knowledge, confidence, and relationships with community members. In this study we found that the relative increases in empowerment were greater for mothers than for health volunteers. Intervention mothers reported more sharing of information on child relationships with community members than Women's Union leaders. The increased information sharing has positive implications for spread of key messages to families that did not directly participate in intensive feeding and the sustainability of the intervention's impact. Future research should focus on developing culturally specific concepts of empowerment to better understand the effects of empowerment efforts. This study's identification of empowerment domains will inform future empowerment studies in Vietnam.

Abstract:
Women's empowerment considered vital in child nutrition and being considered important throughout the first 1000 days of life. Inadequate access to food and child feeding practices are the root causes of nutritional problems in children. Mothers play an essential role in parenting, particularly when it comes to child feeding. However, there are no systematic review available in regarding the correlation between women's empowerment and child nutrition. The aims of this study is to review the correlation between women's empowerment and nutritional status in children, more research should use a longitudinal study design to conduct pathway and lifecycle analysis in appropriate populations to clarify the relationship between women's empowerment and nutritional status in children. We included English materials published between Science Direct, Pubmed, Research Gate and Google Scholar was used to find studies related to women's empowerment and children's nutritional status between 2016- 2021. 1025 studies were generated using tittle and abstract. We scanned the whole text of 538 of them, as well as 25 other research that the authors were aware of. Only 8 papers met our criteria for inclusion. Within three categories of empowerment, information was extracted and synthesized: resources, agency, and achievement. Accessing and distributing resources for household childcare is a challenge. Agency is a process of women's empowerment that includes mobility, decision-making, authority, motivation, skill, knowledge, and mother's role, all of which can help mothers improve their children's nutrition. The well-being of family members, nutritional status, and anthropometric rise as age progresses are all benefits of women's empowerment. Women's empowerment was found to be connected with nutritional status WAZ, HAZ, WHZ, and child anthropometry in general, however the data were inconsistent. These inconsistencies were most likely caused by population features, situations, or methods/ conceptualizations of women's empowerment, as well as the specific domains researched. This study also found that different categories of women's empowerment may have varied relationships with child nutrition. Future study should focus on harmonizing definitions of women's empowerment, as well as determining which essential dimensions it should contain and how it should be quantified. In order to determine which policies and programs enhance women's empowerment and, as a result, foster child nutritional well-being, rigorous evaluation work is also required.

Abstract:
Christian social workers are called by both faith and professional ethics to welcome refugees. The Syrian conflict has created the largest refugee crisis the world has ever known, and while women and children are extremely vulnerable, the unique needs of refugee mothers are often overlooked in both policy and practice. Great importance is placed on motherhood roles in both Western and Arabic cultures, and providing targeted support to uplift refugee mothers can have significant positive ramifications as Syrian refugees resettle into their new lives. Guided by Brené Brown’s insights on empathy and drawing parallels from crossover stories of Biblical women in both Christian and Islamic traditions, the author uses sacred connections to build empathy and enact social change. This paper highlights ways that Christian social workers can adopt a matricentric (mother-focused) approach and provides a recommended interfaith model for intervention with Syrian refugee mothers.

Abstract:
Background Approximately one-third of women reflect on childbirth as a traumatic experience and the way women appraise their birth experience is significant to their postnatal wellbeing. This study aimed to identify and compare experiences of childbirth for mothers who reflect on birth as a traumatic or non-traumatic event. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 mothers in the postpartum period who appraised their birth as either traumatic or non-traumatic. The data were analysed using thematic analysis to elicit themes and subthemes. Results Thematic analysis revealed two contrasting themes relating to whether women felt empowered or powerless during birth. Empowerment was associated with women's trust in their maternity care, the sense of control they felt over their body and birth and the extent to which they felt informed of their options. Being powerless was associated with distrust towards healthcare services, feeling as though they lacked control over the process and feeling ‘in the dark’ about what was happening. Conclusions Women's sense of empowerment during birth is an important contributor to the appraisal of childbirth as a traumatic or non-traumatic experience. Empowerment is largely determined by the dynamic between a mother and the support around her.

Abstract:
Background: Approximately 1.4 million or 13% of all children who die each year could be prevented with widely-available vaccines. Objective: We examined if women’s empowerment improved child immunization using data on 1,056 mothers with young children from Nepal. Methods: The study utilized the 2006 Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, a nationally-representative sample of 10,793 women from 8,707 households across Nepal. We selected all mothers with first child between the ages of 12 and 23 months at the time of interview. This resulted in a sample of 1,056 mothers. Results: Among the measures of women’s empowerment, mothers’ education was significantly associated with child immunization. The odds of being fully immunized for children of mothers with secondary education were 5.91 times the odds for children of mothers without any formal education. Other measures of women’s empowerment – women’s age at birth of first child, gap in age between spouses, women’s knowledge about sexually-transmitted diseases, their role in intra-household financial, health and mobility decisions, and their perceptions toward wife beating – were not associated with child immunization. Among control variables, mothers who received antenatal care were 3.31 times as likely to immunize their children as mothers who did not receive any antenatal care. Other such barriers to health service use such as cost of care, distance to health services, and quality of health services were not significant. Conclusions: To improve child immunization, Nepal should strengthen its antenatal care services. Additionally, over 56% of mothers in Nepal had no formal education; to improve child health in the long run, the country should focus on education of women and girls.

Maintaining involvement in sport and exercise activities is a challenge for mothers with young children. This study therefore qualitatively explores the experiences of 7 mothers who have managed to remain physically active in team sports exploring how the team environment might meet their psychological needs. We analyze the results through Self-Determination Theory (SDT). Semistructured interviews were thematically analyzed to reveal the following themes: perceived benefits of sport, perceived benefits of being part of a team, needing time out from being a mother, social support and empowerment and self-determination. Feelings of competence, autonomy and relatedness were interwoven to these themes thus demonstrating the applicability of SDT to this domain.

Abstract:
The strategy for reducing infant mortality rates (IMR) requires an integrated approach between community empowerment to increase access to education for mothers of infants and toddlers, one of which is a class for mothers of children under five. The success of the Mother Class Of Toddlers program is very dependent on the support and participation of the community. Health cadres have an important contribution to improving the community's ability to achieve optimal health status. Community service activities aim to train the skills of posyandu cadres as Toddler Class Cadres through the empowerment of posyandu cadres in optimizing the implementation of mother-to-five classes. The target of the activity is 15 active Posyandu Cadres in the Curup Timur District, Kepahiang Regency, Bengkulu. The average posttest score was 93.67 after the training, indicating there was an increase in the knowledge score of cadres. The average value of the skills of the toddler class cadres is 81.29. It means that almost all cadres have good knowledge and skills as toddler class cadres after training. Posyandu cadres have played an active role as Class Cadres for toddlers by managing toddler classes well when mentoring is going well.

This article examines the concept of empowerment in the context of a supplementary food program in a rural community in Ghana. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to understand key empowerment processes and outcomes for women and their children. While the women felt positively about the outcomes of the program, they were less satisfied with program processes. Self-determination of the mothers and service-provider conduct were predictive of positive outcomes. The qualitative data served to temper the positive quantitative outcome data in showing that mothers are dependent on the food program. The findings were discussed in terms of the concept of empowerment and its implications for social change and program improvement.

Abstract:
Post-natal care and traditional post-partum practices have important bearings in maternal and child health outcomes. A study was conducted to understand the traditional post-partum practices by the tribal mothers in rural areas of Vikramgad taluka, Maharashtra, India. A qualitative methodology has been adopted by using data collection methods like focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews. Key informant interview methods were adopted to understand the mother’s post-natal diet, personal hygiene, physical activity and rest, neonatal feeding and care practices during pregnancy. Respondents reported that the mother in the post-partum period, locally called balantini , has to follow certain specific practices regarding diet, hygiene and rest to keep herself and her baby healthy. The study reflects on how traditional beliefs and practices affirm gender biases, traditional beliefs and practices when it comes to new mothers and their care. To address the health needs of these ‘last women’, the government and civil society have to work for the reduction of poverty, removal of harmful practices, gender equity and empowerment.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Globally, 2.6 million stillbirths occur each year. Empowering women can improve their overall reproductive health and help reduce stillbirths. Women empowerment has been defined as women’s ability to make choices in economic decision-making, household and health care decision-making. In this paper, we aimed to evaluate if women’s empowerment is associated with stillbirths. Methods Data from 2016 Nepal Demographic Health Surveys (NDHS) were analysed to evaluate the association between women’s empowerment and stillbirths. Equiplots were generated to assess the distribution of stillbirths by wealth quintile, place of residence and level of maternal education using data from NHDS 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016 data. For the association of women empowerment factors and stillbirths, univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Results A total of 88 stillbirths were reported during the survey. Univariate analysis showed age of mother, education of mother, age of husband, wealth index, head of household, decision on healthcare and decision on household purchases had significant association with stillbirths (p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, only maternal age 35 years and above was significant (aOR 2.42; 1.22–4.80). Education of mother (aOR 1.48; 0.94–2.33), age of husband (aOR 1.54; 0.86–2.76), household head (aOR 1.51; 0.88–2.59), poor wealth index (aOR 1.62; 0.98–2.68), middle wealth index (aOR 1.37; 0.76–2.47), decision making for healthcare (aOR 1.36; 0.84–2.21) and household purchases (aOR 1.01; 0.61–1.66) had no any significant association with stillbirths. Conclusions There are various factors linked with stillbirths. It is important to track stillbirths to improve health outcomes of mothers and newborn. Further studies are necessary to analyse women empowerment factors to understand the linkages between empowerment and stillbirths.

Abstract:
Background: Childhood cancer is a stressful experience for patients and their families; it has a profound effect on families emotionally, psychologically and financially. The mother's supportive role affects the child's treatment outcomes and the health of all family members. Aims: This study was conducted to describe the experiences of mothers of children with cancer. Methods: A total of 14 mothers of children with cancer were recruited using purposive sampling. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted using a qualitative inductive content analysis. Data were analysed using Graneheim et al's (2004) approach. Findings: According to data analysis, the mother's supportive role can be depicted across four subthemes: ‘being genuinely present with a sick child'; ‘keeping the family together and strengthening its cohesion'; ‘providing compassionate collaborative care for peers'; and ‘empowering the self and taking charge of one's own life'. The main overarching theme extracted from this study was ‘sacrifice'. Conclusion: This study results suggest that the mothers’ supportive role is relying on their own personal power, in which they not only give the care to the child, family and counterparts, but also drive personal growth and empowerment of mothers. A deeper understanding of mothers’ experiences of their supportive role may enhance the quality of care and promote further paediatric approaches to palliative care.

Abstract:
This study aims to show signs of emotional distress experienced by mothers of children with disabilities. Comprehensive and interpretative study, conducted in the city of Timbaúba/Pernambuco/Brazil, with six mothers of children with disabilities. The empirical material was produced by interviews, following the premises of the Oral History proposed by Bom Meihy and then interpreted in the light of the thematic analysis technique. The mothers' narratives are marked by feelings of ambiguity, neglect, sadness, denial, guilt, self-pity, self-contempt and frustrations. The stories revealed that mothers have the power to overcome and are able to adapt themselves to the experience of taking care of a disabled child. The narratives provided reflections on the complexity of being a mother, in particular, the issue of disability, suggesting the need for multidisciplinary actions aimed at personal empowerment and autonomy in caring for a child, with a view to the child's rehabilitation and inclusion in society.

Abstract:
Previous studies have investigated how Chinese and Korean immigrant mothers adjust to life in the US in order to understand their lives and help them to adapt to the new culture. Based on acculturation and mobile media theories, this study explores particularly how Chinese and Korean immigrant mothers’ child-rearing practices in the US are mediated by mobile media. Guided by the theoretical framework of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), we conducted 16 in-depth interviews with Chinese and Korean immigrant mothers. Findings reveal that while going through the acculturation process, Chinese and Korean immigrant mothers attempt to play the traditional social role of mother as defined in their home countries when utilizing mobile media in their new home. Mobile media have symbolic meanings of empowerment and can be used as tools to deal with prejudice in the host country. This study also suggests that mobile media may mediate Chinese and Korean immigrant mothers’ acculturation processes when adopting different types of acculturation strategies (e.g., integration or separation). Implications for practice and future studies are further discussed.

Abstract:
Introduction The World Health Organization recommended a set of five neonatal care practices that are most essential for good health of a newborn. As good essential newborn care (ENC) practice reduces the risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality, this paper focuses how women’s multidimensional empowerment index is associated with this practice through the skilled antenatal care. To the best of knowledge, no such study has been conducted yet. The composite index of women’s multidimensional empowerments was constructed using family decision, intimate partner violence, social status, healthcare access and economic status of women; and skilled antenatal care was defined if a pregnant woman received eight or more checkups during pregnancy from skilled health professionals. Materials and methods Data extracted from Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, 2017–18 have been utilized in the study. A total of 2441 mothers have been considered who delivered their last live birth at home within three years preceding the survey. A mediation analysis was performed considering the structural equation modeling to find out the adjusted association of women’s empowerment on both skilled antenatal care and good ENC practice, but the unadjusted associations were also checked using a chi-square test. To test the indirect as well as total effect of women’s empowerment through skilled antenatal care on good ENC practice, bias-corrected standard errors were estimated using a bootstrapping sampling. Results Good ENC practice was considerably low in Bangladesh with 7.6% of newborns receiving the practice. Both adjusted and unadjusted analyses showed the significant association of women’s empowerment with both skilled antenatal care and good ENC practice. The study revealed that the indirect effect of high empowerment through skilled antenatal care was greater than its direct effect on good ENC practice. Conclusion This study explored that the prevalence of good ENC practice can be accelerated through women’s empowerment, where skilled antenatal care plays an important mediating role in improving good ENC practice among highly empowered mothers. The study suggests that a woman should follow the latest guidelines recommended by WHO for antenatal care follow-up. Policymakers can modify some of the maternal and child health care interventions based on the research findings.

Abstract:
Despite various efforts to achieve women’s empowerment, many women in developing nations still face desperate situations. In countries where social welfare services for the poor do not exist, mothers are expected to support their children by any means possible, including by begging. This is the case in Ethiopia, where poor mothers, especially in urban areas, engage in begging to support their families. To learn more about the lived experiences of these women we conducted qualitative interviews with 17 mother beggars who were identified through purposive sampling. From the interviews, we identified the following themes: begging as a better option; begging as a solution to a crisis; begging as a family identity; and challenges of begging. Children were considered assets as well as burdens by the mother beggars, who believed that more money could be made by using children, while acknowledging the stress of looking after their children when begging. Understanding the realities of these situations can help determine suitable responses to the needs of poor mothers raising children in the absence of strong state welfare systems.

This qualitative research is focused on understanding the literacy practices of children and their mothers in a social and cultural context of the state of San Luis Potosí, central Mexico. I will address the results of field work analysis based on the historical cultural approach. I will show how a mother’s participation in literacy practices with a group of elementary school first graders detonated their process of empowerment and generated new social practices that arose from the actors in the educational community, through symmetrical relationships between children, mothers and teachers. The main results addressed are the acceptance of a mother’s participation in literacy practices in her context; intercultural relations identified in social practices through orality, reading, and writing, with reflection on the social and cultural context of their reality and with the performance of a play; and finally, the generation of new social practices in the classroom and in the context.

This paper is carried out to assess the relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards participation in toddler mother classes. This needs to be done because participation in attending the class of under-five mothers is still low due to the customary patterns in the existing market system that most people will come to these markets on market day to meet household needs. The problem in previous research with community empowerment interventions through the use of the MCH handbook studied in the toddler mother class, was guided by the facilitator namely the midwife in the local village, but it was still not used maximally because not all mothers were willing / able to read and study it. This paper proposes exploring the relationship between knowledge of attitudes and knowledge with the participation of toddler mother classes. The method used was descriptive analytic, cross sectional, the population in this study were all mothers of toddlers aged 2-5 years as many as 1204 people, cluster sampling, a sample of 89 people, with an instrument in the form of a questionnaire. Chi square statistical test obtained attitudes and knowledge value p = 0,000 with knowledge value OR = 34.5 and attitude OR = 59.7. The role of women in Minangkabau plays a strategic place in fostering people, including in younger generation in "tahfiz’s house" activities. Problem that usually arises is the authority of women in doing activities outside, especially in the Nagari Tanjung Barulak. The women in Nagari Tanjung Barulak are not only active at home as Limpapeh Rumah Gadang who act as mothers for the children but also as "mothers" for children in Nagari. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. The techniques of Data collection are interviews, observation and documentation. The result of research shows that women has vital roles in stir Tahfiz's house in Nagari Tanjuang Barulak, Batipuh District. It means there was no contradiction in fostering people in terms of religion. In terms of Minangkabau customs, the role of women also has its own place, and can play a role in two functions, namely the function as mother or Bundo Kanduang in the community and family as well as Bundo Kanduang in the midst of the people.

Abstract:
In this article I will argue that systemic institutional conditions contained within a family structure result in oppression and obscurity for mothers. In countering this somewhat gloomy assertion, I will introduce a feminist theology of obscurity as a means of actualizing personhood for mothers and acknowledging the concomitant empowerment to be found within motherhood.

Abstract:
Background: Disempowerment is both a cause and effect of unplanned pregnancies in young girls and women. An “Empowerment of Disadvantaged Young Mothers” program was implemented between January 2017 and March 2018 in western Viti Levu, Fiji, to improve young mothers’ knowledge of reproductive health, chance of employment, self-reliance and agency. Aim: To evaluate the outcomes of the “Empowerment of Disadvantaged Young Mothers” program implemented by the Viseisei Sai Health Centre, Lautoka, Fiji. Methods: This is a mixed method retrospective study using quantitative and qualitative data from project records. Findings: There were 89 participants in the program who resided across 22 communities. Almost 75% reported not using a contraceptive as the reason for their unplanned pregnancy. Analysis of pre- and post-program assessment found increases in the number of mothers employed (5.6% vs 27.3%; p=<0.001), registered with National Employment Centre (14.7% vs 47%; p=0.002) and accessing a Pap smear (27.3% vs 60.6%; p=0.003). A third of the participants described feeling “motivated”, “empowered”, “inspired” or “increased confidence” to achieve their original career or educational goals as a result of attending the training. Most reported that the workshops had changed their perspective and given them new hope for their future, with a “reduced sense of isolation” in finding a support network. Conclusion: This empowerment project made substantial increases in the rates of employment and uptake of reproductive health and support services amongst the young mothers, as well as an overall decrease in sense of isolation and improvement in social wellbeing. They felt more “empowered” and “motivated” to make positive changes in their lives to enhance their financial independence and improve quality of life for themselves and their children.

Abstract:
Background: The condition of failure to thrive in toddlers due to chronic malnutrition and making children too short for their age is called stunting. Purpose: This research was conducted to analyze the risk factors of stunting in children. Methods: The study was conducted from mid-May to mid-August 2020. This study developed a model for maternal empowerment in preventing and managing stunting using a cross-sectional design, then implementing the model using a quasi-experimental non-randomized pre-post control group design. The population involved was all mothers with children under five years old in Posyandu Ngariboyo, Candirejo, and Plaosan, obtaining 250 mothers. Meanwhile, the study sample was 150 mothers who had children under five years old in Posyandu Ngariboyo, Candirejo, who met the inclusion criteria. Results: Mothers with good characteristics increased their knowledge of stunting prevention and control by 0.42 times (p=0.01). Mothers with good knowledge increased their maternal commitment by 0.23 (p=0.01), and mothers who had good commitment reduced stunting by 0.45 (p=0.01). Furthermore, mothers with good knowledge increased the family support by 0.24 (p=0.01). In addition, good family support also reduced stunting by 0.26 (p=0.01). Conclusion: Mother's knowledge contributes to the prevention and management of stunting. Children's physical health, family support, nutritional status, and home environment are also important factors in stunting prevention and management. Family support is needed by mothers to realize their commitment to carrying out early detection, prevention, and control stunting.
