Abstract:
Chapter 3 assesses Greek and Roman medical treatises on pregnancy, maternal health, birth, and the early nurture of an infant to explore the Roman perception of the foetus and the developing infant. It presents archaeological and epigraphic evidence for birth and death in childbirth, and it analyses published skeletal studies to gain insight into differing weaning practices and methods of infant care in different regions and social environments. Finally, it examines artefactual and religious evidence connected with fertility and the birth and health of infants to understand how parents sought divine help for their children.
