Ally, Hadija Mussa. "Genetic diversity and structure of the superabundant whitefly populations, vectors of viruses causing diseases of cassava in three East African countries (Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda)." Thesis, La Réunion, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LARE0012.
Full textHigh population of the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, a cryptic species complex had been associated with the vectoring and spread of viruses causing two diseases of cassava in East Africa: the cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). Among the B. tabaci species, sub-Saharan Africa 2 (SSA2) was the vector associated with an epidemic of CMD since the 1990s in Uganda. However, this species is now replaced by the SSA1 and led to development of another epidemic by CBSD since the mid 2000s. The spread of both diseases toward South and West Africa is feared with this new supposed invader. In my thesis I have used ecological data and molecular approaches (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) to better understand the factors driving the presence of the superabundant whitefly populations on cassava in East Africa. We have analyzed: i) species abundance, diversity and distribution (geographic and host plants) along a transect survey over three East African countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, ii) the genetic diversity and structure of current populations of B. tabaci species, and iii) comparing genetic changes between the old and new populations collected in 1997 and 2017, respectively. This study involving large number of samples provided insights of a more complex picture than expected. SSA1 was found to be the source of the some observed outbreaks although other species, notably IO and sub-group 3 of SSA1 (SSA1-SG3) have also shown this capability. The observed outbreaks are therefore not just related to a single species in East Africa. In addition, we showed that the species community and its genetic diversity differ from one country to another, involving different epidemiological situations, without any clear pattern of invasion detected between the countries. Analysis of old samples did not show the involvement of a new species or the emergence of a new population in 20 years, although the dynamics within the whitefly genetic groups was observed over time. Our results contributed new knowledge on the super abundant populations on cassava in Eastern Africa and help develop targeted control measures for the local populations

Full textThe study of species and genetic richness of crops pest vector of plant viruses in a biological context of invasion in continental environment, is essential for understanding the mechanisms that underlay viral emergencies in sub-Saharan Africa. The cryptic Bemisia tabaci species complex is composed of many species, including the Sub-Saharan group of species that are subservient to cassava in Africa. They are directly involved in the vection of many viruses causing cassava mosaic disease (CMD) or the cassava brown streak diseases (CBSD). These diseases cause severe yield losses in cassava crops, which are among the leading starchy root crops in the African continent. Unfortunately very few studies on the vector of these diseases had been made in numerous African countries where the disease is of great concern. The diversity of whiteflies species on cassava in some countries remains broadly unknown. Furthermore, little information is available on the gene flow within species and between genetic subgroups recently described within these species. It is in this context that we conducted a genetic study on 898 samples from Central Africa and 667 samples from Cameroon using nuclear (microsatellites) and mitochondrial (COI) markers. These analyzes have allowed the characterization of the genetic variability at the intra- and inter-species level. The possible effect of factors such as the host plant and the geographical origin of analyzed individuals, often reported as genetic structuring factors in the species B. tabaci were also tested for (i) determining the nature of the species in circulation in these countries, (ii) understand the distribution of these populations, (iii) assess the extent of their diversity and genetic, structure, and (iii) consider the contribution of this knowledge in the management of whitefly populations in Central Africa. We were able to describe the presence of 6 species of B. tabaci complex and 5 subgroups of a species (SSA1) of this complex in CAR and Cameroon (SSA1-SG1, SG2-SSA1, SSA1- SG1 / 2, SSA1-SG3, SSA2, SSA3, MED, MEAM1 and IO). The abundances of whitefly populations on cassava coincide with levels of "outbreak" in all sampled areas, highlighting the status of these countries as in an epidemic area. This thesis has allowed also highlighting the role of the species SSA1 and its subgroup -SG1 with a specific haplotype P9H9 / P18F5 in the proliferation and expansion of the African cassava mosaic in Central Africa. Populations of this species and this particular haplotype were detected as dominant and polyphagous in sampled countries. Similarly, in Cameroon, it was emphasized that the invasion and overgrowth of this haplotype could be achieved through a process of invasion by hybridization with resident populations. Current data on the distribution of the dominant haplotype in both countries tend to show that not only the Cameroon and the CAR are affected by this wave of invasion but could be also in the neighboring countries

Full textOver the last thirty years, numerous revetments were excavated in several locaties in Africa south of the Sahara. These remains were not often the sublect of a systematic study. We would like here to make an evaluation of these techniques of ornamentation and protection which are revetments and to analyse the related material cultures. After giving a general outline of the study area, the working conditions and the methodology selectec, wa describe in a first part the geographical distribution of sites. The geographical distribution of sites will display six great concentration zones which are: 1) the region of lake chad, 2) the junction of the Bénoué and the Mayo Kebi in Cameroon, 3) the banks of lake Kainji in Nigeria, 4) the Yiruba area in Nigeria, 5) the Ajatado area in Togo and Bénin, 6) those situated in the northern of Togo. To these areas are added a few isolated sites. The second part deals with the materials used and the techniques. It seemed that the oldest pavements excavated up to now date back to the vith and viith century and are situated in the mean valley of Niger, on the banks of lake Kainji. During this period of pavements, births, influences, declines and renewals are observed as well as the continuous or discontinuous evolution of materials and techniques. The third part is devoted to the functions of pavements in traditional architecture: aesthetic and or that of soil preservation in public, worship, and private places. Datings allowed to determine a rather old cultural background and to define indicators specific to one or several populations according to the various periods

Full textThe object of this thesis is the review of the conflicts and mythological love endeavors depicted in the Africa Proconsularis mosaics in the Late Antiquity period. In the meantime, one of the main aims is the study of the subject of the mosaics, the manners of the figurative assimilation, the evolution of the concept, and also the relation between the mosaic makers and a culture considered as a foreign one.For each mosaic are highlighted the respective contributions of the iconography and literature. The structural and conjectural components of each image, meaning the setting of the actions, the characters, the models and the iconographic formulas, and the methods of the production are examined more narrowly; questioning the insistence of imprints, interchange- ability between subjects. We are putting into question theories which has become over time as a dogma, such as the total dependence of the mosaic of Africa Proconsularis to the artistic trends of the time and the inability to separate from the hegemony of the arts alias the major; and we will try to demonstrate that the African mosaic makers were not mere imitators, but truly innovators. Moreover, other approaches are needed to put the mosaics within their architectural and decorative context. These approaches will allow addressing issues related to semantic relations, aiming to find out the modality of the insertion in the rest of the Empire, but also to investigate the validity of certain theories, such as the existence of a codification as a regulator linking the scenes presented and the architectural contexts. Finally, the replacement of the mosaic, in the artistic production encompassing all the other disciplines, taking into consideration all the geographical, historical, social particularities, and the cultural aspects of Roman Africa during the Late Antiquity, which give evidence that it is difficult or impossible to measure the exact relationship between administrative function, financial status and cultural level of the elite sponsors. Instead of, continuing to discuss about the existence of only an elitist culture that adheres to all the aristocracy of the Empire, it would need to exceed some a priori and talk about diversity and differences rather than only similarities

Full textMultidiscipline has definitely marked the journey of Assia Djebar. The Algerian French writer has devoted interest in literature as well as the arts. Her infatuation with the arts hasn’t been without influence towards her writing. The fact is above all remarkable in the level of numerous explicit references, both intertextual and interdiscursive, that her stories have made their rounds in cinema, in art, in music, in photography and in mosaics. It is from these references that we hypothesize a relation to the arts, implemented in a more implicit style in Djebar’s prose, that is to say an openess to defining her poetics. Therefore, for us it is a matter of putting into place writing procedures, in the Djebarian style, which in return for their movements and changes, are capable of creating effects as well as techniques that will be used in other art forms that are generally produced. Intermediality allows us to envision this type of work. Whereas, intertextuality puts emphasis above all on texts, interdiscursivity on discourse, and interartiality on the esthetical characteristics of artistic productions ; intermediality gathers these concerns, without neglecting to consider the technical dimension inherent to the phenomena of meaning which lends shape to their semiotic subject matter.
