Abstract. Deciphering the seismic character of the young lithosphere near the mid-oceanic ridges (MOR) is a challenging endeavor. In this study, we determine the seismic structure of the oceanic plate near the MORs, using the P-to-s conversions isolated from good quality data recorded at 5 broadband seismological stations situated on the ocean Islands in their vicinity. Estimates of the crustal and lithospheric thickness values from waveform modeling of the P receiver function stacks reveal that the crustal thickness varies between 6 and 8 km with the corresponding depths to the lithosphere asthenosphere boundary (LAB) varying between 43 and 68 km. However, the depth to the LAB at Macquire Island is intriguing in view of the observation of a thick (~ 87 km) lithosphere beneath a relatively young crust. At three other stations i.e., Ascension Island, Sao Jorge and Easter Island, we find evidence for an additional deeper low velocity layer probably related to the presence of a hotspot.

Abstract:
This study provides regional-scale data on drivers of horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) presence along the northcentral Gulf of Mexico coast and has implications for understanding habitat suitability for sparse horseshoe crab populations of conservation concern worldwide. To collect baseline data on the relationship between environmental factors and presence of horseshoe crabs, we surveyed four sites from the Fort Morgan peninsula of Mobile Bay, Alabama (AL) to Horn Island, Mississippi (MS). We documented number, size and sex of live animals, molts, and carcasses as metrics of horseshoe crab presence and demographics for two years. Data were compared to in situ and remotely sensed environmental attributes to assess environmental drivers of occurrence during the time of study. Overall, greater evidence of horseshoe crab presence was found at western sites (Petit Bois and Horn Islands) compared to eastern sites (Dauphin Island, Fort Morgan peninsula), mediated by a combination of distance from areas of high freshwater discharge and interannual variation in weather. Higher sex ratios also were found associated with higher occurrence, west of Mobile Bay. Land cover, particularly Bare Land and Estuarine Emergent Wetland classes that are common to western sites, was most predictive of live animal and to some extent carcass occurrence. Our findings suggest that small-scale variation in habitat quality can affect occurrence of horseshoe crabs in sparse populations where density is not a limiting factor. Data from molts and carcasses were informative to supplement live animal data and may be useful to enhance ecological assessment and support conservation and management in regions with sparse populations.

Abstract:
At the beginning of Book II of Utopia, Thomas More describes the adventures of a hypothetical navigator who approached the isle of Utopia: actually the navigator is none other than us, readers who, through this reading-navigation are approaching the idea of Utopia. However, the Utopians wish to protect themselves from our approach, having built a dangerous harbor, with “shallows on one side and rocks on the other.” “Since the other rocks lie under the water, they are very dangerous. The channels are known only to the Utopians, so hardly any strangers enter the bay without one of their pilots; and even they themselves could not enter safely if they did not direct their course by some landmarks on the coast”. Utopia has two meanings, the book and the island; the reader/navigator must avoid shipwreck on the reefs. The various references and meanings of the work, which are as many landmarks on the coast, frequently change places. Thus it is necessary to find one’s orientation through the evermoving game of such indications.

Abstract:
Context Monitoring the status of albatross populations and identifying the factors driving observed trends remain international conservation and management priorities. The shy albatross is endemic to Australia and breeds only on three Tasmanian islands. Aims To provide a reliable total population estimate for shy albatross, including an assessment of demographic trends for each of the three populations where possible. We consider also key drivers of population trends for each population, particularly the potential role of fisheries by-catch, with an overall aim of determining the status of the species. Methods Aerial photography and ground surveys were used to estimate the number of annual breeding pairs and trends in adult and juvenile survival rates were calculated using mark–recapture methods. At-sea distribution data was used to identify population specific trends in the overlap of shy albatross and fisheries to evaluate the potential influence of fisheries by-catch on the populations. Key Results The Albatross Island population increased post-harvesting but has recently stabilised at around 5200 breeding pairs, less than half its estimated historic size. This trajectory change appears driven by a decrease in juvenile survival. The small (170 breeding pairs) Pedra Branca population has recently declined, probably due to reduced breeding success associated with the increasing population of Australasian gannets (Morus serrator) on the island. The largest population (on Mewstone) comprises at least 9500 breeding pairs. Trends for this population are unknown. However, this paper demonstrates that these birds have greater overlap with trawl and longline fishing effort and are consequently at higher risk of fishing-related mortality. Conclusions Given the extent of fisheries overlap, survival rates for Mewstone individuals are likely to be lower than the Albatross Island population. Combined with recent trends on Pedra Branca and Albatross Island, we suggest that the current status of the shy albatross is likely to be stable at best and quite possibly decreasing. Implications The concerns raised about the conservation status of shy albatross reinforce the importance of continued population monitoring focussed particularly on establishing the trend of Mewstone. A thorough assessment of interactions with trawl fishing operations also is a management priority for this species.

We found evidence for an additional low-velocity layer below the expected LAB depths at stations on Ascension, São Jorge and Easter islands. The layer probably relates to the presence of a hot spot corresponding to a magma chamber. Further, thinning of the upper mantle transition zone suggests a hotter mantle transition zone due to the possible presence of plumes in the mantle beneath the stations.

Abstract:
Recent improvements of the transient electromagnetic (TEM) method provide unprecedented capabilities of imaging geological features in the uppermost few hundred metres of the subsurface. This is documented with an example from the island of Mors, Northern Jutland, Denmark, where 2655 TEM soundings have been acquired as a part of Viborg County’s hydrogeological investigation programme. Horizontal aspects of the interpreted TEM soundings are presented in thematic maps revealing variations of resistivities in specified depth intervals and depths to the resistivity basement, i.e. the deepest recorded low-resistive layer. Vertical aspects are displayed in cross-sections.The dense coverage of TEM soundings, combined with borehole logs, allows the precise delineation of major geological features. These comprise the Mors salt diapir, intricate systems of buried Quaternary valleys and several glaciotectonic complexes, all contributing to a complicated geological framework for the island. The layers above the salt diapir, which have been subject to severe erosion, are distinctly imaged in the thematic maps, even though they are frequently dissected by buried valleys. At least four generations of buried valleys can be identified on the basis of their preferred orientations; these were mainly formed during early glaciations. Large parts of the island were glaciotectonically deformed during the Late Weichselian subsequent to valley formation, and it is suggested that the presence of deep valleys may have affected the process of glaciotectonic deformation.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines the nature and behavior of secondary H(igh) tones in Koshikijima Japanese, a highly endangered dialect spoken on three small, remote islands in the south of Japan. This dialect generally has a mora-counting prosodic system with two distinctive accent types/classes (Type A and Type B), and displays two H tones, primary and secondary, in words of three or more moras: The primary H tone appears on the penultimate and final moras in Type A and Type B, respectively, whereas the secondary H tone occurs at the beginning of the word redundantly. Koshikijima Japanese displays regional variations with respect to the secondary H tone, particularly regarding its domain/position, its (in)dependence on the primary H tone, its interaction with the syllable, and its behavior in postlexical phonology. This paper examines how the secondary H tone behaves differently in three distinct accent systems of the dialect: (i) the system described by Takaji Kamimura eighty years ago, (ii) the one that is found quite extensively on the islands today, including Kamimura’s native village (Nakakoshiki) and Teuchi Village, and (iii) the system observed in Kuwanoura Village today. Comparing the three accent systems, this paper also proposes historical scenarios to account for the different behaviors of the secondary H tone across time and space.

Abstract:
Becky Conekin et al. identify the Queen's Coronation and its mediation by television in 1953 as the defining moment in post-war British modernity (Conekin, Mort, Waters 1999). The population of the Highlands and Islands mostly watched this event on 16mm film, via the mobile cinema shows provided by the Highlands and Islands Film Guild. Film assumed the audio-visual functions of television because the geography of the Highlands and Islands did not readily accommodate television broadcasting. Television arrived slowly and unevenly. This paper traces arrival of television into the Highlands and Islands and the uncertainty over accessibility and quality of reception. It argues that whilst the Scottish Education Department assumed that the mobile cinema service had been succeeded by television; the inherent problems of delivering television enabled the more communal, educative, legitimate and reliable cinema to prevail. This asynchronous relationship compels us to recognise the geography of British modernity. Drawing on archival sources, oral history interviews and media histories, this paper presents an account of the Highland experience of a transition typically aligned with an urban perspective.

Abstract:
Abstract Archaeology of north-eastern Poland has been poorly recognized owing to vast forest areas and numerous lakes. This particularly refers to the Warmian-Masurian Voivodship, where forest covers over 30% of its area. Prospection of forested areas has become possible in Poland just over 10 years ago with the Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). These techniques allow obtaining 3-D documentation of recognized and also unknown archaeological sites in the forested areas. Thanks to ALS/LiDAR prospection a significant number of archaeological structures have been identified also in the Warmia and Masuria regions. Among them oval-shaped hillforts, surrounded by perfectly spaced concentric moats and ramparts, located mainly on islands and in wetland areas, have raised particular attention. Based on field prospection and results of preliminary excavations, these objects have been considered as Iron Age hillforts. One of the best preserved objects of this type is on the Radomno Lake island, located several kilometres to the south of Iława town. Integrated geoarchaeological prospection of this hillfort emphasized benefits of using LiDAR in combination with results of geophysical prospection and shallow drillings. Applied methodology enabled to document the hillfort shape, and to study its geological structure and stratigraphy. The results clearly indicate that integration of LiDAR data with geophysical prospecting is indispensable in future archaeological surveys. It is a perfect tool for remote sensing of archaeological objects in forest areas, so far not available for traditional archaeology.

Abstract:
Starting from the premise that all empire building involves ideological constructs justifying the violence that accompanies such efforts, this article concentrates on elucidating the case of the Portuguese in Asia, specifically in Japan. Although well beyond the formal Portuguese thalassocracy in Asia, the Japanese islands were exposed for about a century, between 1543 and 1640, to the informal presence of Portuguese traders and missionaries. The symbiotic relationship between these two groups was based on the experience that, in Japan, the trade was difficult to conduct, for violence was always lurking beneath the surface of the trading relationship. We know of several instances when such violence actually exploded into major armed clashes, and many other times violence was narrowly averted through the mediation of the missionaries.Based on original research in the archives of Portugal and Spain, this article analyzes the records that the leaders of the Portuguese who came to Japan in the sixteenth century, the so-called capitães mores, have left behind. Finding that a significant number of these men were or later became members of the Order of Christ or were closely related to such members, it then explores their mindset through a survey of the function of this military order in Portuguese society of the late Middle Ages. The result is a group portrait of thirty-seven men who may be considered a representative sample of the Portuguese leading both the formal and informal empires in Asia. This portrait will clarify why both Japanese and Portuguese authorities agreed, at least during the second half of the sixteenth century, that the Jesuit missionaries were an indispensable presence in Japan.

Abstract:
Giovanni Casaretto (1810–1879) was appointed by King Charles Albert of Savoy-Carignano, Kingdom of Sardinia (now part of Italy), as the botanist and mineralogist of a planned circumnavigation of the globe. The royal frigate La Regina left Genoa on 8 November 1838, arrived at the Island of São Sebastião (State of São Paulo, Brazil) in January 1839, and then stopped at the Island of Santa Catarina (Brazil) and Montevideo (Uruguay), where Casaretto made considerable collections. From Montevideo the frigate sailed towards the Malvinas/Falkland Islands, however, due to a terrible sea storm, was badly damaged and returned to Rio de Janeiro for repair. From the end of April to December 1839 Casaretto collected in Rio de Janeiro and surroundings, and also bought about 100 collections made by Riedel in the “provinces” (now states) of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and about 500 collections made by Clausen in Minas Gerais. Due to the precarious conditions, the frigate started her return, with two stops in Salvador (Bahia) and Recife (Pernambuco), where Casaretto gathered botanical specimens, arriving at Genoa in May 1840. He organized his herbarium into 162 bundles, with 3,007 collections corresponding to 13,667 specimens from Brazil and Uruguay, and 122 collections corresponding to 477 specimens from Gibraltar. He numbered his collections in consecutive numerical order, although with several inconsistencies; therefore, Casaretto’s numbers are not collection numbers, but are herbarium numbers. In his Decades he described 100 new species from Brazil (98 spp.) and Uruguay (2 spp.). An analysis of the letters that he sent to Giuseppe Moris showed that the dates written on the first page of each Decas do not correspond to the real publication dates. Casaretto’s concise biography is presented, the voyage of La Regina is described and illustrated, and collection dates, localities, Casaretto’s herbarium numbers and plant groups are summarized in a table. Specific epithets dedicated to him, and Casaretto’s unpublished names either published in synonymy under other taxa or validly published by other authors are presented and discussed.

Aim and area of study: In the present paper we estimated the age of four monumental Pinus canariensis of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) by means of tree-ring analysis. Many tree-ring series have been accurately studied and many missing rings have been determined.Material and methods: The trees were dead and the samples analysed were big disks. We measured numerous radii and crossdated the individual tree-ring series, paying particular attention to the existence and location of missing rings. We have distinguished between missing outer rings (MORs) and missing inner rings (MIRs) and analysed the possible causes of both.Main results: We determined an average of 8.8% total missing rings (MRs) for these long-lived trees, with a maximum of 96 MRs in a series of over 500. We have tried to establish a tree-ring chronology on Gran Canaria Island, also having the tree-ring series from Inagua site, but the long individual tree-ring series analysed do not crossdate between them. Research highlights: We consider the Canary pine a species hard to conducting dendroecological studies, especially if the samples come from managed old trees, in which a large amount of known and potentially unknown missing rings can hampered dating. Even knowing the difficulties involved in dendrochronological analyses of P. canariensis, we can confirm that it is a long-lived species, which can grow to over 500 years, and some of whose growth changes could be associated with certain historical and ecological events.

Abstract:
The identification of glaciotectonic structures is an exclusive field for the structural geologist. The structures comprise a series of different types and regimes. The sequential development of the glaciotectonic structures reflects superimposed subglacial and proglacial deformation processes. The glaciotectonic structures may involve earlier formed structures thus superimposed by the glaciotectonics, or the glaciotectonic structures may eventually be overprinted by neotectonic deformations. Four different superimposed settings may be distinguished: 1) glaciotectonic deformation superimposed on pre-Quaternary tectonics, 2) glaciotectonic deformation superimposed on earlier formed glaciotectonic structures (superimposed deformation involving two or more glaciodynamic events), 3) glaciotectonic deformations superimposed sequentially in the same glaciotectonic unit (two or more glaciotectonic phases in the same glaciodynamic event), and finally 4) neotectonic deformation superimposed on glaciotectonic structures. Examples of type 1 are taken from the deformed Palaeogene diatomites with ash layers at Hanklit, Mors, and Hestegården, Fur. Dokumentation of glaciotectonic deformation superimposed on halokinetic structures is demonstrated from Erslev, Mors, and further examplified by structures occurring at Junget on the north side of the Batum salt diapir in Salling. Type 2 is examplified by glaciotectonic structures in the Skarrehage mo-clay pit on Mors. An example of Elsterian glaciotectonics superimposed by Saalian glaciotectonics is recorded from the hilly island Møborg, central part of western Jylland. The classic glaciotectonic site Møns Klint is described as a combination of an imbricate fan and an antiformal stack formed by the Young Baltic ice advance in the Late Weichselian superimposed by a regressional re-advance from the east. Type 3 is exemplified by the glaciotectonic complex at Feggeklit. Type 4 is described from the island of Fur where glaciotectonic structures are cut by neotectonic faults roughly parallel to the main E-W trend of Limfjorden.

Abstract:
Abstract While recent work has made it abundantly clear that the metrical foot is fundamental for any understanding of the accent pattern of Japanese and its dialects, other features of these pitch accent systems are directly linked to the constraints aligning tonal melodies with prosodic structure. This paper presents some results on the microvariation in the pitch accent systems of the dialects of Kagoshima Prefecture: the main Kagoshima City dialect, and the separate dialects of Koshikijima island and the southernmost Kikaijima island (Ryukyu archipelago). All these dialects, except for the Kagoshima City dialect, are in serious decline in terms of numbers of speakers. We show that the accentual microvariation in Kagoshima Japanese is due to a simple reranking of the basic constraints aligning the accentual melodies HL and H. The difference in tone-bearing unit between dialects (syllable- vs. mora-counting behavior), difficult to analyze as a parameter setting, follows from the ranking of constraints against tonal contours on moras and syllables.

Abstract:
We investigated time allocation and diel rhythms in foraging northern gannets (Morus bassanus). Chick-rearing adults on Funk Island, Newfoundland, Canada, were equipped with different types of data loggers. We found no effects of the devices on the birds' behaviour or breeding success. A total of 25 foraging trips were recorded from 16 birds. Foraging- trip durations (median 13.5 h, range 3.0–39.2 h) showed a bimodal distribution, coinciding with a partitioning of foraging trips into 1- and 2-day trips. Some individuals were consistent in performing either 1- or 2-day trips. During foraging trips, gannets were flying, on average, 44% of the time. Foraging activities exhibited a clear diel rhythm. Flight and diving activity was concentrated during early morning and late afternoon, with reduced activity during midday. Gannets were inactive at night. Flight time between the terminal dive of a foraging trip and arrival at the colony was significantly longer during 2-day trips (94 ± 22 min; mean ± SD) than during 1-day trips (51 ± 22 min). Water masses visited differed between 1- and 2-day trips. We could find no evidence for a clear dual foraging strategy, although birds were exploiting more distant waters during 2-day trips, as has been found for many procellariform species.

A new species of the morphogenus Rhysocaryoxylon Dupéron (Rhysocaryoxylon madsenii Sakala & Gryc sp. nov.) is described from the Lower Eocene of the Fur Formation, Mors island, Denmark. This permineralized fossil angiosperm wood is semi-ring-porous with distinct growth ring boundaries, vessels solitary or in radial multiples of 2–5, perforation plates exclusively simple, and tyloses abundant. Rays are 1–5-seriate and heterocellular with a body composed of procumbent cells and 1–4 rows of upright marginal cells. Axial parenchyma is reticulate with numerous prismatic crystals both in chambered cells and idioblasts, forming long chains up to 12 cells high. Its equivocal botanical affinities within the family Juglandaceae are discussed.

Examination, utilizing scanning electron microscopy, of 58 specimens ofHoploparia stokesi(Weller) from the Maastrichtian portion of the Lopez de Bertodano Formation, Seymour Island, Antarctica, leads to the conclusion that cuticular ultrastructure may be used to distinguish molted from deceased remains of nephropid lobsters. Molted cuticle is characterized by deterioration, or loss, of lamination in the inner endocuticle whereas cuticle, during the intermolt phase, exhibits lamination throughout the endocuticle as well as the exocuticle. Diagenetic effects may obscure lamination throughout the cuticle. These observations confirm that Salter's position is typical of molted remains in fossils. Furthermore, partial remains ofH. stokesigenerally are molts. Preservational quality of molted remains tends to be better than that of corpses.

Abstract:
Almost nothing has been reported on the natural history of any of the world’s 92 species of cave cirolanids, including those from saltwater caves (anchialine). Over 1400 specimens ofBahalana geraceiCarpenter, 1981 were collected in two caves from 1978–2018; size-frequency data provided insight into population structure. Some specimens were maintained alive over multiple years to study rarely reported activities for cave cirolanids: feeding, molting, growth, longevity, and reproduction. Photographs document these phenomena. Mating occurred after gravid females shed both halves of reproductive molts. Females can have multiple broods (iteroparous) with ~2.0–3.5 years per reproductive cycle: egg production (~9–24 months), mating, brooding (5–6 months), release of 6–55 mancas (2.3–3.3 mm long), and oostegite molt (~2–13 months after manca release). Estimated lifetime fecundity is 58 mancas per female; probable range is 20–120. In Lighthouse Cave, females outnumbered males (~4:1), grew larger (16.8 vs. 9.5 mm), and lived longer. Growth rates were slow: ~1–2 years for three instars of post-marsupial manca development (from ~2.3–4.0 mm); estimated adult growth rate was 0.8 mm/year (1.6 molts/year) for males, and 0.5 mm/year (1.5 molts/year) for females. Longevity estimates for females are 25–28 years with 23–30 instars, vs. 6–8 years for males with 13–15 instars. Males from Major’s Cave were nearly as numerous and as large (14.8 mm) as females; estimated longevity for males is >20 years. Longevity estimates of >20 years appear to be the longest for any isopod species. Female longevity probably increased by being starvation resistant, surviving multiple broods, cannibalizing smallerB. geracei, and living in a low-stress environment. Populations appear to be stable, relatively large, and not currently threatened.

AbstractTwo of Melville's early works are contrasting attempts to report on what he saw and experienced during his stay in some islands of the South Pacific. Typee is presented as a sober, philosophical account of mores and religion, thus in keeping with the more ethnographic interests of travelers's reports. Mardi is an avowed work of fiction. While cannibalism serves to focus interest in the first, human sacrifice has this function in the second. Melville could find previous authors to support his approach in the first book but, even though he studied available works on mythologies, found no scholarship to help with the second issue. It is argued that the second work, albeit a fiction, makes the greater cognitive advance and helps discern the perils scholars had to face in the colonialist era.

Abstract:
The main aim of the conducted research was to determine the presence of allochthonous plants in the area of the protected natural reserve - The Great War Island. The research was conducted during the vegetation season of 2020. Thirty four allochthonous plant species were recorded and classified into 19 families. Asteraceae (8 species), Fabaceae Poaceae and Sapindaceae (3 species each) had the highest species diversity. Phytogeographic analysis of their primary distribution areas has shown that most belong to the category of floral elements of the "adventitious" areal type. The chorological spectrum is dominated by species of North American origin (58.8%), while in the biological spectrum the most common are therophytes (38.2%). Chronological spectrum analysis has shown the highest prevalence of neophytes (64.7%). Seventeen species have the status of invasive, 16 naturalized, while one species (Morus alba) is characterized as ephemerophyte. The most frequent neophytes on the Great War Island are Acer negundo, Ailanthus altissima, Amorpha fruticosa, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, while among neotophytes, Echinocystis lobata and Symphyotrichum lanceolatus stand out in terms of frequency of occurrence. The geographical position of the Great War Island, due to which it is exposed to periodic floods, high levels of groundwater, strong influence of anthropogenic factors and the biological characteristics of allochthonous species are the main factors enabling them to inhabit this area. Results of this research should be the basis for the development of a strategy for monitoring the condition and planning control measures for the unwanted plant species, in order to protect the indigenous flora. Only careful and responsible management of landscapes of outstanding features such as The Great War Island and taking appropriate preventive measures can prevent the settlement, domestification and further spread of allochthonous plants.

Abstract This article reviews the medical aspects of the humanitarian assistance mission Joint Task Force Operation Pacific Haven from September 1996 to April 1997. It reviews the effectiveness of the deployable medical units used to support the medical screening, treatment, and processing of more than 6,600 Kurdish evacuees applying for political asylum in the United States. The distinct cultural mores and language barriers of the Kurdish population made the provision of even basic medical care a challenge. Designed for combat service support, these deployable medical units were successful in the performance of the comprehensive public health and humanitarian assistance medical support mission because of the support of two on-island military treatment facilities. In short, for military medicine to successfully conduct humanitarian assistance and/or disaster relief missions, deployable medical units need to be designed, equipped, staffed, and trained to perform these operations.

Abstract. Understanding distribution patterns, activities, and foraging behaviours of seabirds requires interdisciplinary approaches. In this paper, we provide examples of the data and analytical procedures from a new study in the German Bight (North Sea) tracking northern gannets (Morus bassanus) at their breeding colony on the island of Heligoland. Individual adult northern gannets were equipped with different types of data loggers for several weeks, measuring geographic positions and other parameters mostly at 3–5 min intervals. Birds flew in all directions from the island to search for food, but most flights targeted areas to the (N)NW (north–northwest) of Heligoland. Foraging trips were remarkably variable in duration and distance; most trips lasted 1–15 h and extended from 3 to 80 km from the breeding colony on Heligoland. Dives of gannets were generally shallow, with more than half of the dives only reaching depths of 1–3 m. The maximum dive depth was 11.4 m. Gannets showed a clear diurnal rhythm in their diving activity, with dives being almost completely restricted to the daylight period. Most flight activity at sea occurred at an altitude between the sea surface and 40 m. Gannets mostly stayed away from the wind farms and passed around them much more frequently than flying through them. Detailed information on individual animals may provide important insights into processes that are not detectable at a community level.

AbstractFrom 1989 to 1996, excavation and surveys were carried out at dozens of sites and intersite areas in the southwestern Peten by the Defensive Systems Subproject of the Vanderbilt Petexbatun Regional Archaeological Project and by subsequent related Vanderbilt investigations. The excavations and analyses explored fortification systems, related settlement, and artifactual evidence. Beginning at about a.d. 760, the major centers of the Classic Maya civilization in the Petexbatun region were fortified by a massive expenditure of labor on defensive walls of masonry, usually surmounted by wooden palisades. As warfare accelerated, major centers and later even small hilltop villages were located in highly defensible positions and were fortified by walls, palisades, moats, and baffled gateways. Despite these efforts, all major centers were virtually abandoned by the early ninth century. By a.d. 830, only the island fortress of Punta de Chimino and a very reduced and scattered population remained in the Petexbatun region.

Abstract. A two-dimensional morphometric programme, recently designed to measure fossil skeletons of the silicoflagellate genus Corbisema, was used to investigate specimens of the C. apiculata–C. triacantha complex found in a sample from the Fur Formation on the island of Mors, Jutland, Denmark. The semi-automated programme measured the lengths of the basal sides and radial spines, the basal side curvature, and the location of the pikes (if present) from a photographic database (N=469). As a result, two distinct morphological groups were revealed based on their radial spine length : basal side length ratio and the presence or absence of pikes: group A (ratio of 1 : 1.3, no pikes) and group B, with the latter subdivided into B1 (ratio of 1 : 7, with pikes) and B2 (ratio of 1 : 6, no pikes). Group A (C. triacantha sensu lato) possesses a small basal ring with relatively straight basal sides and long radial spines, while group B has a large basal ring with curved basal sides and short radial spines. In B1 specimens (C. apiculata sensu stricto) the pikes are positioned 0 to 1 µm away from the junction point of the strut and basal ring. This would suggest that B1 double skeletons are likely to be in the Star-of-David configuration, while A and B2 double skeletons (which lack pikes) are likely to be in the corner-to-corner configuration. Compared with the previously published biometric studies of extant Stephanocha (Stephanocha speculum complex in the Southern Ocean and S. medianoctisol in the Arctic Ocean), the results are somewhat different: although C. triacantha sensu lato (group A) is similar to the modern species of Stephanocha, the latter have smaller basal ring diameters, whereas specimens of C. apiculata sensu lato (types B1 and B2) have large basal rings. If their cell diameters are calculated, B1 is the largest, with S. speculum being the smallest – about half the size of B1. This could suggest that the relationship between radial spine length and mean basal ring size has shifted over geological time.

Abstract:
Abstract. Despite progress in reconciling refractory trace elements and isotopes with the structure and dynamics of the mantle inferred from geophysical constraints and dynamical modelling, mass balances of key elements and observations of noble gases in the mantle have remained enigmatic. This paper reviews arguments that most issues can be resolved if the full implications of the major-element heterogeneity of the mantle are taken into account. A reconciliation of refractory trace elements and their isotopes with the dynamical mantle, proposed and quantified by Hofmann, White and Christensen, has been strengthened by work over the past decade. The apparent age of lead isotopes and the broad refractory-element differences among and between ocean island basalts (OIBs) and mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) can now be quantitatively accounted for with some assurance. It has been proposed recently that noble gases reside in a so-called hybrid pyroxenite assemblage that is the result of melt from fusible pods reacting with surrounding refractory peridotite and refreezing. Hybrid pyroxenite that is off-axis may not remelt and erupt at MORs, so its volatile constituents would recirculate within the mantle. Hybrid pyroxenite is likely to be denser than average mantle, and thus some would tend to settle in the D" zone at the base of the mantle, along with some old subducted oceanic crust. Residence times in D" are longer, so the hybrid pyroxenite there would be less degassed. Plumes would sample both the degassed, enriched old oceanic crust and the gassy, less enriched hybrid pyroxenite and deliver them to OIBs. This model can account quantitatively for the main He, Ne and Ar isotopic observations, and for the poor correlation of unradiogenic gases with refractory-element enrichment in OIBs. The difficulty with mass balances can be traced to the common inference that the MORB source is strongly depleted of incompatible elements, which leaves a deficit of key elements and seems to require a hidden reservoir that is enriched and undegassed. However it has recently been argued that conventional estimates of the MORB source composition fail to take full account of mantle heterogeneity, and in particular focus on an ill-defined "depleted" mantle component while neglecting less common enriched components. Recent estimates have also been tied to the composition of peridotites, but these probably do not reflect the full complement of incompatible elements in the heterogeneous mantle. New estimates that account for enriched mantle components are capable of satisfying mass balance requirements, although some additional uncertainties apply to argon. The result is that the MORB source is depleted by only about a factor of 2, relative to the primitive Earth.

Abstract:
Abstract Seabirds are upper trophic level predators, and are often highly sensitive to changes in the availability of their prey. Altered prey assemblages resulting from fluctuations in oceanographic conditions may be mirrored by shifts in seabird diet. Long-term studies of dietary change in seabirds therefore provide valuable insight into the nature of environmental shifts within the systems in which they forage. In recent decades, the Agulhas region in South Africa has undergone significant oceanographic change related to warming and intensification of the Agulhas current. Concurrent with this change, the population of Cape gannets Morus capensis at Bird Island, Algoa Bay, has grown rapidly, probably as a result of an increased availability of its dominant prey items, sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus. Using one of the longest and most complete time-series available on diet of a seabird (spanning 34 years), we tested for changes in composition and the abundance of dominant prey species of this population. These observed changes were also compared with acoustic survey estimates of their biomass, and annual catch data. Since 1979, the prey composition has remained similar, but the dietary contribution of sardine and anchovy, which fluctuated inversely to each other, increased over the study period. These shifts seem to be reflective of fluctuations in the stock size of sardine and anchovy. Conversely, a third species, saury Scomberesox saurus, dominant in the non-breeding diet of the 1980s, decreased significantly in dietary abundance over the following two decades. It is likely that dietary shifts of Cape gannets at Bird Island were related to climate-mediated oceanographic change. The implications of such changes are discussed.

In the winter of 1859, the Boston poet Julia Ward Howe sailed for Cuba; and in the winter of 1860, Ticknor and Fields published an account of her travel.A Trip to Cubaappeared only months after the same firm had published Richard Henry Dana's story of his “vacation voyage,”To Cuba and Back. These two narratives responded to a burgeoning American interest in the Caribbean island that promised recuperation to American invalids and adventure for military “filibusters.” Howe's narrative demonstrated a self-conscious familiarity with antebellum travel writing more broadly, however, as she playfully resisted yet ultimately upheld various conventions of a genre that had become a staple of the American literary marketplace. “I do not know why all celebrated people who write books of travel begin by describing their days of seasickness,” she noted, before discussing her own shipboard illness. She followed similar cues as she blended elements of autobiography, the social sketch, nature writing, and political and social commentary. Across 250 “sprightly” pages, readers were offered a familiar melange of humorous portraits, detailed descriptions of “foreign” institutions, and extensive commentary on local customs and social mores.

Abstract:
AbstractWater plays an important role in most processes within the Earth's mantle, e.g. transport phenomena, differentiation and seismic properties. This paper reviews the various aspects of water in the mantle, with a special emphasis on the water content in nominally anhydrous minerals, especially lower-mantle minerals. The saturation of the upper mantle with respect to water is calculated as a function of pressure, based on available water-solubility data obtained for upper-mantle minerals. The result indicates that the upper mantle is saturated at pressures between 2 and 4 GPa for bulk water contents of 250 to 700 ppm wt., as retrieved from measurements on mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) and ocean island basalts (OIBs). Whereas up to 4000 ppm wt. of H2O could be dissolved in the upper mantle at pressures corresponding to 410 km depth, such a value is less than the 1.5–2.5 wt.% solubility stored in the hydrous phases of the transition zone. Water solubility in mantle perovskite is still controversial, because of the difficulty of synthesizing samples free of impurities. Reported data indicate that water solubility in perovskite decreases with increasing temperature and Al content. Water partitions preferentially into ferropericlase rather than into perovskite, and its water solubility increases with the incorporation of trivalent cations.

AbstractThis essay analyzes the martyrdom of Fathers Alejandro López (1604-1655) and Juan de Montiel (1632-1655) at the court of the Sultan of Magindanao, Muhammad Dipatwān Qudrāt (or Kudarat), better known as Cachil Corralat (1581-1671). Abstract:
AbstractMikhail Bulgakov is renowned for his challenge to the dry literary canons of the Soviet regime through his fantstical works of colorful content and unorthodox form, such as Sobach'e serd'tse (Heart of a Dog) and Master i Margarita. But Bulgakov is much mort than an exotic exception to Soviet puritanicalness. His works also include the highly practical and realistic, such as the tragic war-time works "Zapiski iungo vracha" (Notes of a Young Doctor) and Belaia gvardiia (The White Guad). Bulgakov's literary challenge to Soviet censorship also took direct forms. including two works that brazenly satire and examine the utterly taboo subjest of state censorship: the play, Bagrovyi ostrov (The Crimson Island) and Teaal'nyi roman (Theatrical Novel). Bulgakov's challenge to power also extendel to the epistolary, in the form of letters he sent to the Soviet government (and were read by Stalin) that contain attacks against the Soviet censorship bureau. In this real-life drama of Bulgakov versus Soviet censorship, we witness the icredible creativity and bravery of the artist, as well as discover his original and informative theory about how Soviet censorship operated. Let us begin our examina tion of this drama with the censorship bureau itself, how it first functioned and how it came to focus its sights on Bulgakov.

Moris Morley & Chris McGillion (eds.). Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2005. xi + 286 pp. (Cloth US$ 65.00)There are perhaps few countries other than France for which the ratio of academic word per population is higher than Cuba. Notwithstanding its symbolic significance over the past fifty years, it is important to remember that we are talking of a small island of something over ten million souls exporting sand and sugar. Even the Cuban diaspora has benefited from this arguably undeserved notoriety, and hardly a week goes by without yet another exile memoir. Over the past two weeks (this is being written in mid-August 2006), the attentionmeter once again jumped as Fidel’s illness and the temporary (?) transfer of power was documented by the global media. Given all this attention, new books on Cuba face a daunting challenge: to say something new about a place that has been much studied, but which, in many ways, has remained the same for the past half century. Is there something we don’t yet know?
