Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/10425.

Abstract:

FEDERICO, LUCA. "L'apprendistato letterario di Raffaele La Capria." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/1005664.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In Anna Seghers’ short story, Gita delle ragazze morte (1943-1944) and in Claudio Magris’ Esterno giorno – Val Rosandra (1982), a group of high school friends and their trip on the eve of World War I provide the narrative nucleus around which individual micro-histories meet macro-history. In the proposed analysis, the reason for the deprivation is identified as an element common to the two texts. In Seghers’ story, the temporal distance is cancelled out in a continuum, whereas Magris’ story operates through multiplication and fading between different typologies of texts: novel, screenplay, film, Goethe’s Faust, and short story.

Abstract:
The essay analyses the cult of St. Cresci and its origins. St. Cresci is considered to be one of the companions of St. Miniato, and it is believed he was martyred ‘sub Decio’ in the 3rd century. St. Cresci’s legend must be interpreted in the context of the Florentine hagiographic production of the 11th century, when the local clergy tried to resuscitate old and long forgotten cults of saints whose relics they possessed. The paper argues that the legend of St. Cresci was ‘invented’ to be opposed to that of St. Miniato. Indeed in the 11th century Ildebrando, bishop of Florence, strongly promoted the cult of Minias in order to support his claims on the lands of the newly founded monastery. It was after this that cathedral’s canons, in opposition with their bishop, proposed the martyrial figure of St. Cresci; the cult of which got a great importance under the Medici, and especially during the reign of Cosimo III.

The monastery of San Miniato, formerly Black Benedictine, in 1373 was entrusted to the care of the Monte Oliveto’s monks with the favor of pope Gregory XI. The paper retraces the reasons of this passage of observance, which took place during a difficult period for the city of Florence, engaged in the War of the Eight Saints, and in the context of an almost generalized crisis of Benedictine abbeys, analyzing the resumption of regular life and institutional innovations, such as the temporary mandate of abbots; until the site was abandoned after the mid-sixteenth century.

Abstract:
The paper dwells on Giovanni Gualberto’s relations with San Miniato al Monte and the Apostolic See, and questions some consolidated historiographical paradigms to highlight the elements of continuity the new ‘Vallombrosan’ foundations held with the Benedictine monastic tradition. The thesis is that the very hard opposition to Abbot Ubertus did not lead to a break with the Abbey of the Mons Forentinus. The reinterpretation of the Florentine reforming movement shows how Giovanni Gualberto’s rebellion was linked to practical and disciplinary rather than doctrinal aspects, and how the subversive thrust of his positions, both in terms of Eucharistic theology and the validity of the sacraments administered by unworthy priests, was emphasised by the deforming point of view of the controversies of the time, mainly in the vision of Peter Damiani.

The essay, starting from a survey of the tradition of documentary sources related to San Miniato, focuses on the archival papers concerning the abbey in the late Medieval and Modern period, trying to indicate some historical-archival research paths. It is pointed out that much of the documentation is now dispersed or can only be consulted through erudite transcriptions, and possible forms of collating texts are outlined. At the end there is a memorial of 1533 which offers an insight into the conditions of the religious community and the damage the abbey suffered during the siege of Florence period.

The essay focuses on a documentary corpus that belonged to the San Miniato archive: the papers of Banco di Francesco Botticini, which came to the monastery at the beginning of the 15th century. Botticini’s legacy can be reconstructed in about fifty parchments (represented here in an Appendix as register or excerpt), and offers interesting evidence on the Boccaccio’s family, linked to Banco Botticini by neighborhood relations and common acquaintances. Eleven ‘Olivetan parchments’ bear references to Boccaccio and are able to show different but still close relationships: from the sincere ones with messer Giovanni to the stormy with his brother, Iacopo, up to the long-lasting bond with the Iacopo’s sons, heirs of Boccaccio, who remained in the legal guardianship of Banco Botticini for many years.

The article examines the dedications to San Miniato martyr in the Tuscan area during the Middle Ages. On the basis of the specific literature, while not excluding that other titles may be recovered from specific studies on territories in the future time, it is hypothesized that in the dioceses of Fiesole, Florence and Pistoia the preservation of these titles is linked to the presence of the Vallombrosan monks who, since the origins of their Order, were linked to the memory of the ancient Christian martyr.

Abstract:
With the needs for full structural state awareness and health monitoring as well as emerging challenges of Urban Air Mobility (UAV) and Future Vertical Lift (FVL), Health and Usage Monitoring systems (HUMS) need to be more accurate, robust and reliable than ever before. In active-sensing guided-wave networks in particular, conventional Damage Index (DI)-based approaches have been the industry standard for decades because of their computational simplicity and ability to do the damage detection and quantification tasks. However, under specific circumstances, like for specific actuator-sensor paths within a network or due to varying operational conditions, DIs can suffer from various drawbacks that make them prone to inaccurate and/or ineffective damage quantification. This study builds on previous work by the authors where DIs were used to train single-output Gaussian Process regression models (SOGPRMs) for robust damage quantification, and the accuracy limit of SOGPRMs was shown to depend on the evolution of the chosen DI formulation with damage size. In this study, multi-output GPRMs (MOGPRMs) are used instead in order to leverage information about damage size from multiple actuator-sensor path DI values. It is shown that the proposed approach can overcome the different shortcomings of DI evolution with damage size in the different path by capturing the correlation between the DI evolution for different paths. The proposed framework is applied for an Al coupon with simulated damage, and the damage size quantification results are compared with those of SOGPRMs. It is shown that the information fusion approach exhibited by MOGPRMs gives more accurate damage size estimations compared to SOGPRMs.

Abstract:
Abstract In this work, we proposed new sample preparation technique (combination of mechanical and chemical method) for inspection of intermetallic bondballs. The use of this new method will provide more accurate estimation of the percentage of intermetallic formation area. The procedure to perform the sample preparation is: 1. Grind unit from the bottom side of the package until the bulk silicon die is visible. 2. Dipping the unit into KOH 50% solution at 100 to 110 degree C to remove the bulk silicon 3. Dip unit in HF : DI water (1:10) at room temperature to remove any diffusion layers, metal lines, barrier metal and inter-dielectric layers. Then clean the unit by using Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) 4. The images are imported into Image-Pro software to calculate the percentage values.

Abstract:
Abstract Pickering emulsions are stabilized by solid particles that occupy the fluid-fluid interface, physically preventing coalescence. Their stability in brine, where interparticle electrostatic repulsion is negligible and van der Waals (vdW) attraction dominates, makes them attractive for applications in porous media. Recent studies postulate that inter-droplet particle networks assemble in brine and aid Pickering emulsion stability to coalescence. This work experimentally assesses the effect of increasing interparticle vdW attraction on particle network strength and emulsion stability. We grafted 6 nm, 12 nm, and 20 nm silica nanoparticles with varying densities of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prevent aggregation and dispersed them in either brine or deionized water (DI). We characterized the PEG-coated nanoparticles with thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic light scattering to determine PEG grafting density, diameter, and zeta potential. To generate oil-in-water emulsions, we sonicated dispersions of variable nanoparticle concentration and decane in equal volumes. We imaged the emulsions with microscopy and centrifuged them for 15 minutes at 5000 g of acceleration, using the volume of decane released after centrifugation as a measurement of emulsion coalescence to the applied force. Nanoparticle characterization confirmed successful grafting of PEG to the silica surface. We compared trends in emulsion stability as a function of salinity and particle diameter to changes in the relevant interparticle forces described by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. Analysis of microscopy images showed an increase in emulsion droplet diameter with decreasing nanoparticle concentration, salinity, and increasing nanoparticle diameter. Through centrifugation we observed that lower PEG grafting densities tended to produce more stable emulsions, suggesting that particles with high grafting densities and consequently high steric repulsion tended to repel and prevent formation of strong particle networks. Emulsions generated in DI coalesced more easily, indicating that electrostatic repulsion dominated relative to vdW attraction and that particle networks did not form. In brine, where electrostatic forces were screened out by counterions, the emulsions better resisted coalescence, consistent with the formation of a particle network. The strength of the network was inferred from the difference in emulsion stability to coalescence in DI and in brine. We measured a greater brine-DI stability difference of 3.7× for the larger 20 nm PEG-coated nanoparticles, compared with 3.3× and 2.2× for the 12 nm and 6 nm PEG-coated particles, respectively, further supporting the role of particle networks on emulsion stability.

Abstract:
In the last few years, a significant research effort has been made for developing and enhancing Direct Injection (DI) for compressed natural gas (CNG) engines. Several research projects have been promoted by the European Community (EC) in this field with the objective of finding new solutions for the automotive market and also of encouraging a fruitful knowledge exchange among car manufacturers, suppliers and technical universities. This paper concerns part of the research activity that has been carried out by the Politecnico di Torino, AVL List GmbH and Siemens AG within the EC VII Framework Program (FP) InGAS Collaborative Project (CP), aimed at optimizing the control phase of a new injector for CNG direct injection, paying specific attention to its behavior at small injected-fuel amounts, i.e., small energizing times. The CNG injector which was developed within the research project proved to be suitable to be used in a DI SI engine, featuring a pent-roof combustion chamber head and a bowl in piston, with reference to both homogeneous and stratified charge formation. Fuel flow measurements made by AVL on the four-cylinder engine revealed a good linearity between injection duration and fuel mass-flow rate for injection durations above a reference value. In order to improve the injector characterization at short injection durations, an experimental and numerical activity was designed. More specifically, a multidimensional CFD model of the actual injector geometry was built by Politecnico di Torino, and purposely-designed simulation cases were carried out, in which the needle-lift time-history was defined on the basis of experimental measurements made by Siemens. The numerical model was validated on the basis of experimental data concerning the total injected-fuel amount under different conditions. Then, the model was applied in order to evaluate the dynamic flow characteristic by taking also the inner geometry of the injector valve group into account, so as to establish a correlation to the needle lift measurements done by Siemens for injector characterization. In the paper this dynamic behavior of the injector is analyzed, under actual operating conditions, and its impact on the nozzle injection capability is discussed. The simulation results did not show significant oscillations of the stagnation pressure upstream of the nozzle throat section, and thus the resultant mass-flow rate profile is almost proportional to the needle-lift one. As a consequence, in order to characterize the injector flow behavior in the nonlinear region (short injection duration), the measurement of needle lift is sufficient.

Abstract:
Secondary atomization of droplets (in the partial or full fragmentation regime) in multiphase and multicomponent fuel §ows is a promising technology that can minimize fuel consumption, improve the combustion dynamics, reduce anthropogenic emissions, stabilize fuel injection in a combustion chamber, and reduce the equipment wear [1, 2]. The most promising secondary atomization schemes involve droplet droplet collisions in intersecting fuel jets [3], droplet collisions with a solid surface in the form of walls, rings, meshes, and ledges [4], microexplosion, and pu©ng [5]. As a result of a microexplosion, the droplets of multiphase and multicomponent fuels break up to form an array of liquid fragments with a size of 1 100 μm [5]. The aim of this work is experimental research of pu©ng and microexplosion in secondary droplets. The number and radii of secondary fragments (child droplets) were analyzed by Shadow Photography (SP). Three approaches have been used to improve the accuracy of the experimental ¦ndings and to estimate their repeatability in a series of experiments. The measurements did not deviate by more than 5%. From the experiments conducted, the present authors managed to ¦nd the cause of signi¦- cant di¨erences in the characteristics of child droplets being formed in the course of microexplosion and pu©ng of two-liquid droplets for di¨erent formation regimes and identical heating conditions. After the research ¦ndings have been generalized, it became possible to determine the ranges of variation for the main parameters at which the maximum amount of child droplets with the required component composition could be obtained. In particular, the authorshave singled out the maps with multiple input parameters that can be used in the technologies of secondary fragmentation for the intensi¦cation of fuel mixing and combustion, puri¦cation of liquids, intensi¦cation of phase transitions, and heat exchange in power generation units.

Abstract:
In the last few years, the debate among designers and sustainability experts has brought attention to many different behavioural change approaches and techniques and particularly on “gamification” processes able to better motivate and engage students or even nudge people (consumers) to more environmentally and socially responsible habits (Mousumi, 2021).But since 2011, most of the contradictions about “gamifying” boring or unpleasant experiences have been loudly shared by game designers and thinkers worldwide (Bogost, 2014). It seems that the goal of changing people’s unsustainable behaviours can be achieved by designing brand new sustainable experiences instead of gamifying the unsustainable ones (Yusoff and Kamsin, 2015).This change of perspective represents the foundation of applied games, and it has been deeply studied during the applied research MUV2020 (723521 – muv2020.eu), led by the PUSH design laboratory within the Horizon2020 framework in the field of sustainable urban mobility (Di Dio et al., 2020).From June 2017 to August 2018, the research consortium has run extensive user research across Europe and developed a mobile app game based on the main gain mechanic of recording personal urban travels and a game narrative of sport. From September 2018 to February 2020, the consortium had run several tests in more than 20 cities to study the value of different interactions in terms of engagement and sustainability impact. After the COVID-19 outbreak, further experiments have been carried out by the research project spin-off’s MUV Benefit Corporation (muvgame.com). Thanks to more than 16.000 downloads, 500.000 kilometres recorded, and the CO2 reduction algorithm (validated in April 2020 according to ISO 14064-2), this contribution shows how various game dynamics nudged, with a different rate of efficacy, MUV’s players commuting behaviours. This contribution will extensively deepen applied and persuasive games, MUV App user research and game design, actual field data analysis on engagement rate and sustainable impacts.

Biheri, Ghith, Khaled Elmaleh, Ashrf Amoura, and Abdulmohsin Imqam. "The Impact of High TDS of Utica Shale on High Viscosity Friction Reducer Performance: Experimental Study." In SPE Eastern Regional Meeting. SPE, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/211865-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In unconventional reservoirs, a novel polyacrylamide called high viscosity friction reducer was utilized throughout the previous decade to transport proppant. The product's advantages included freshwater use reduction, a more than 30 percent reduction in chemical use, and a decrease in the footprint of equipment such as trucks and tanks. Nonetheless, high TDS could limit the effectiveness of HVFR in providing better hydraulic fracturing treatments. This study investigates the impact of Utica's high TDS on HVFR using a flow loop test. The study investigates the consequences of the following four factors. The effect of TDS using DI water, 10% and 30% of the Utica-produced water concentration. Two pipe sizes (i.e., 1/2 and 3/4) are applied to determine the pipe's loop size. The effect of HVFR concentration on friction reduction utilizing three HVFR concentrations (i.e., 0.5, 1, and 2 gpt). The impact of temperature on HVFR and friction reduction using room temperature of 21°C and reservoir temperature of 65.5°C. The results demonstrate that HVFR provided a significant friction reduction utilizing DI water and at high TDS concentrations where friction reduction exceeds 67% using 10% or 30% of the Utica-produced water concentration. In addition, the result indicated that HVFR was strongly affected by a temperature of 65.5 °C (150 °F), where the friction reduction was around 40%, compared to a room temperature of 21 °C (70 °F), where the friction reduction is almost 70%. Furthermore, the outcomes showed that HVFR prepared with fresh water showed a significant friction reduction at low HVFR concentrations of 0.5 and 1 gpt, where the friction reduction was approximately 60 and 70%, respectively. Increasing the HVFR concentrations to 2 gpt did not improve the friction reduction compared to 1 gpt, where the friction reduction was around 66%. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the effect of Utica Shale produced water, fluid concentration, and temperature on the performance of HVFR as fracture fluids by evaluating the friction reduction across a flow loop test.

Stubblebine, Michael, Ladan Amouzegar, and Ivan Catton. "Passivation and Performance of Inorganic Aqueous Solutions in a Grooved, Aluminum Flat Heat Pipe." In ASME 2013 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2013-65641.

Full text
Abstract:
Aluminum heat pipes have traditionally been incompatible with water and water-based fluids because they quickly react with the casing to generate non-condensable hydrogen gas (NCG). The NCGs inhibit the operation of evaporation and condensation based devices, eventually plugging the condenser end of the heat pipe. The heat pipe is then unable to remove heat from the condenser and the device fails. Terdtoon [1] found that these events often happen so rapidly between aluminum and water that measurements cannot even be taken. The present work tested two different, patented inorganic aqueous solutions (IAS) in a flat heat pipe setup. Grooved aluminum plates were used as the heat pipe wick and the tests were run with the heating section raised above the condenser. Compatibility between the working fluid and aluminum heat pipe was established by running the device to dryout and then reducing the heat flux to check for hysteresis. De-ionized water (DI water) was also tested, as a baseline, to establish that it did indeed fail as expected. Operating performance of each mixture was obtained from zero heat input until dryout was reached for multiple angles of inclination. The data show that both IAS mixtures are compatible with aluminum heat pipes and exhibit performance similar to that of a copper and water heat pipe. IAS and aluminum heat pipes could replace existing copper and water devices and deliver similar performance while reducing overall weight by more than three times. An IAS and aluminum heat pipe could also replace existing aluminum and ammonia combinations, currently favored in aerospace applications, to allow for increased performance and a larger operating temperature range while maintaining low device weight.

Abstract:
Structures used in naval applications are often subjected to marine or other aqueous environments during their work-life. It has been observed that many composites absorb moisture when exposed to such environments, which can lead to material damage and degradation of mechanical properties. The addition of salt to the water solution may have additional impacts on the material degradation over time. Furthermore, many of these applications require that the material be subject to stresswave loading environments like impact that may cause dynamic fracture. In this experimental study, the effect of water absorption on the Mode-I dynamic fracture behavior of carbon-epoxy composites is investigated. Specifically, the effects of moisture uptake and the role of saline on the critical dynamic SIF are investigated. Samples were hygrothermally soaked in an elevated temperature bath (70 °C) of either ASTM standard sea water or distilled water. The elevated temperature accelerates mass absorption, making experimental observation possible on a more reasonable timeline than natural aging. Soaking durations varied between 3.5 hours to excess of 4 months to explore the role of soak time on dynamic fracture behavior. Pre-cracked specimens were impacted using a unique long-bar striker device at 4 m/s, and the resulting Mode-I (opening mode) fracture behavior investigated. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used in conjunction with ultra-high-speed imaging to track the crack tip surface displacements, and an elastodynamic solution was leveraged to extract the stress intensity factors (SIF) at fracture initiation. The dynamic fracture toughness of the soaked samples was compared with results from a group of unsoaked, ambient condition samples. The results indicated that the ambient condition samples had a consistently higher Mode-I SIF than any of the soaked conditions. The difference between the ambient condition SIF and the soaked conditions was observed to be approximately 60% for the 3.5 hour soaks, 40% for the 2 day soaks, 50% for the 2 week soaks, and 80% for the samples soaked for longer than 4 months. The SIF reduction is thought to be due primarily to matrix and interface degradation. No statistically significant difference in the SIF was observed between samples soaked in DI water versus salt water.

Abstract:
Integrated Modification Methodology (IMM) has already been applied in established metropolitan contexts, such as Porto Maravilha in Rio de Janeiro, the neighbourhood of Shahrak-e Golestan in Tehran, and Block 39 in New Belgrade. When Unitec Institute of Technology’s Associate Professor of Urban Design Dushko Bogunovich came up with the idea of a comparative analysis of two sprawling metropolitan contexts – Auckland and Milan – he and Massimo Tadi, Director of the IMMdesignlab in Milan and Associate Professor at the School of Architectural Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, decided to apply IMM to a sample area of low-density suburban Auckland. The project presented in this book was developed in a joint international design workshop organised by Politecnico di Milano, IMMdesignlab and Unitec Institute of Technology. The workshop was held at Politecnico di Milano, Polo Territoriale di Lecco (Italy), from 25–29 May 2015, and the team, comprising 14 international students from different design disciplines, was coordinated by Tadi and Bogunovich, assisted by engineers Hadi Mohammad Zadeh and Frederico Zaniol (IMMdesignlab). The outcomes of the workshop were then further developed by IMMdesignlab to demonstrate how, by adopting IMM, it is possible to retrofit, renovate and reactivate an inefficient and energy consuming neighbourhood into a more integrated and sustainable one.

Photo degradation kinetics of insensitive munitions constituents nitroguanidine, nitrotriazolone, and dinitroanisole in natural waters. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41900.

Abstract:
Herein the matrix effects on the kinetics of aqueous photolysis for the individual munitions constituents of IMX-101: nitroguanidine (NQ), dinitroanisole (DNAN), and nitrotriazolone (NTO) are reported along with the environmentally relevant kinetics and quantum yields. Photolysis potentially represents a major degradation pathway for these munitions in the environment and further understanding the complex matrices effects on photolytic kinetics was needed. Aqueous systems are of particular interest due to the high solubility of NQ (3,800 ppm) and NTO (16,642 ppm) compared to the traditional munitions trinitrotoluene (TNT, 100.5 ppm) and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX, 59.9 ppm). Environmental half-lives (and quantum yields) were found to be 0.44 days, 0.83 days, and 4.4 days for NQ, DNAN, and NTO, respectively, under natural sunlight. In laboratory experiments using nominally 300 nm bulbs in a merry-go-round style reactor in DI water the relative rate of photolysis for the three munitions constituents followed the same order NQ > DNAN > NTO, where DNAN and NTO reacted 57 and 115 times more slowly, respectively, than NQ. In the various environmentally relevant matrices tested in the laboratory experiments NQ was not significantly affected, DNAN showed a faster degradation with increasing ionic strength, and NTO showed a modest salinity and pH dependence on its rate of photolysis.
