Abstract:
Nelson Morpurgo was born to a Histrian family in Cairo. Raised between Cairo and Milan, he met Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and several other Futurists and, ultimately, helped secure a place for futurism in Cairo from the 1920s through to his departure in the 1940s. He organized theatrical performances, painting exhibitions, radio shows, cultural events and debates. My paper analyzes the cultural and linguistic bilingualism that this interstitial figure developed. Morpurgo’s activity is understood in three different ways: first, as the trans-national experience of a Futurist vanguard; second, as emblematic of the Italian community in Cairo; and third, as representative of the complexities of Egyptian cosmopolitanism. His writings allow us to reframe the relationships between the Egyptian arabophone scene and the often multi-lingual, eclectic foreign community. Morpurgo negotiates a position between the ideologically incongruous cultural lives of Marinetti and the local surrealist vanguard.

This book is based on the papers given at a conference in Cambridge, March 20-21, 2015, held in memory of Anna Morpurgo Davies, on various aspects of the prehistoric Aegean writing systems (Cretan Hieroglyphic, Linear A and Linear B) and their Cypriot relatives, including not only the material classified as Cypro-Minoan, but the Cypriot syllabary that developed from this in the early Iron Age and went on in use well into historical times, used to write both Greek and at least one non-Greek language of the island.

Comme le soulignent en particulier les auteurs de cet article, "it is apparent that the process of decipherment cannot yet be considered as completed... Often there is no agreement about the vocalic value of the consonantal signs; is it possible to attribute to some signs a double or even triple vocalization or should we assume that normally each sign has only one vocalization?... All to often it remains unclear whether the uneveness depends on a lack of systematic organization in the script itself or on the inadequacy of the modern decipherment..".

Artykuł przybliża losy zwierząt (przede wszystkim koni), wykorzystywanych w trackie działań wojennych podczas I wojny światowej.

Abstract:
The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is considered moderately sensitive to salinity stress. Yields can be adversely affected by salinity at EC levels of 2 to 3 dS·m–1. In vitro screening and selection for salinity tolerance may be faster and more reliable than traditional field assessment. A modified nodal cutting bioassay was developed based on that of Morpurgo (1991) and used to rank the salinity tolerance of several potato cultivars, wild Solanum species, and their hybrids. Nodal cuttings were cultured in Murashige and Skoog (1962) basal medium which included NaCl at 0, 40, 80, and 120 mM. After 4 weeks at 25C and 16/8 h day/night period, vegetative growth parameters were assessed. Hybrids derived from S. chacoense outperformed hybrids of other wild species, their wild parents, and S. tuberosum cultivars. `Russet Burbank' and `Kennebec' were more salinity-tolerant than the three other cultivars tested.

Abstract:
SUMMARY This paper investigates the syllable structure of Cyprian, an ancient Greek dialect written with a syllabary. Based on the corroboration of orthographic and metrical evidence, Cyprian is found to have a syllable structure which maximizes onsets to allow clusters of equal or rising sonority (see also Deecke 1884, Meister 1894, Thumb & Scherer 1922, Lejeune 1972, and Masson 1983). This analysis is different from the traditional view of Greek syllable structure which considers all intervocalic consonant clusters to be hetero-syllabic (Hermann 1923, Meillet 1934). The support for the traditional view of Greek syllable structure is critiqued and found to be unreliable. Competing views on Cyprian syllabary which were largely motivated by a desire to defend the traditional view of Greek syllable structure are also critiqued (Morpurgo Davies 1987, Viredaz 1983, Miller 1994, and Woodard 1994). These alternative explanations of the Cyprian syllabary are found to be needlessly complicated and to employ ad hoc devices. Finally, the traditional reconstruction of Proto-Greek is evaluated against Steriade's (1982) proposal, which allows complex onsets of equal or rising sonority. Steriade's proposal is found to be the more sensible.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Castiglioni, P., R. Tommasini, M. Morpurgo, and M. Di Rienzo. Modulation of pulmonary arterial input impedance during transition from inspiration to expiration. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(6): 2123–2130, 1997.—We investigated whether respiration influences pulmonary arterial input impedance during transition from inspiration to expiration in five anesthetized, spontaneously breathing dogs. Impedance (Z) was separately assessed for heart beats occurring in inspiration, in expiration, and during the transition from inspiration to expiration (transitional beat). Transitional beats were scored by the ratio between the fraction of beat falling in expiration and the total beat duration [expiratory fraction (Efr)] to quantify their position within the transition. In transitional beats, input resistance linearly increased with Efr; Z modulus at the heart-rate frequency (fHR) decreased up to −50% for Efr = 50%. Z phase at fHR was greater than in inspiration for Efr<40% and lower for Efr >50%. Unlike blood flow velocity, mean value and first harmonic of pulmonary arterial pressure were correlated to Efr and paralleled the changes of input resistance and Z at fHR. This indicates that respiration influences Z through modifications in arterial pressure. The evidence of important respiratory influences on Z function may help the pathophysiological interpretation of dysfunctions of the right heart pumping action, such as the so-called cor pulmonale.

Abstract:
This article analyzes how Anna Franchi and Willy Dias (Fortuna Morpurgo) utilized the language of tourism in their irredentist writings during the first two years of World War I. I look at how they adopted specific features of travel guidebooks to create a nationalistic geographical fantasy. I argue that the two authors’ similar approaches have the same two-fold goal: to teach about the geography, history, and even the existence of the contended areas; to induce their readers to “imagine” the nation (in Benedict Anderson’s terms) as a community ideally united, within and beyond the state’s borders, by a common cultural, linguistic, geographical and ethnic heritage. Inspired by Risorgimento ideology and by irredentist historians, Dias and Franchi rooted such heritage in Greek and Roman history and myth and in the Venetian identity of the contended lands. I show how, through discursive strategies of inclusion/exclusion, Dias and Franchi represented the Mediterranean civilization as antithetic to German and Slavic “barbarism.” Drawing upon the work of historians of the Adriatic Littoral, I place Dias’ and Franchi’s works in the broader context of the history of the representation of the contended provinces in irredentist discourse. Through the lens of the Sociology of Tourism, and the Semiotics of Tourism I look at how the two authors produced an ideologized vision of landscape.

Abstract:
It has long been known that HLuvian sign 383, an oblique stroke (\), when added to another sign, indicates the presence of a postvocalic r: see the references cited by Laroche, HH 205. The “thorn”, as it is often called, may indicate /r/ alone, or a sequence /ra/ or /ri/. The now standard transliteration ra/i is thus a cover symbol for all three possibilities. The actual reading in any particular case may be determined only on comparative grounds, internal or external. As examples of /r/, /ra/, and /ri/1 may cite respectively dat.-loc. pl. (“FINES”)I + ra/i-ha-za = /irhanza/ “boundaries” (cf. Hitt. irḫa- “idem”), pret. 3rd sg. i + ra/i = /ira/ “went”, and pres. 3rd sg. i + ra/i = /iri/ “goes”.Hawkins, Morpurgo-Davies and Neumann, HHL 171 f, have argued that in internal and final position the combination 209 + 383 (), in addition to i + ra/i, may also indicate ri+i = /ri/. That is, in combination with a vowel sign V, the “thorn” may indicate the sequence /rV/ instead of/Vra/i/. Note that the HLuvian syllabary has no CV sign for /ri/, while sign 412 (and less often sign 103) spells /ru/. Evidence for the reading ri+i comes from alternations such as abl./inst. DEUS-na-ri+i beside deus-na-ti-(i) “by/from the god(s)” or tu-pi-ri+i beside tu-pi-ti-i “strikes”.

Abstract:
The thermal denaturation of laccase from the Japanese lacquer tree (Rhus vernicifera) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The endotherms of holo-laccase, type 2-Cu-depleted laccase and apo-laccase were deconvoluted into two independent two-state transitions, providing evidence for a domain structure of the protein. The correlation of the two transitions with the bleaching of copper optical bands and the decrease of the transitions' enthalpy on Cu removal show that the process involves the denaturation of Cu sites. No detectable unfolding of secondary structure was observed, since the thermal transitions, characterized by low overall specific enthalpy, did not modify either the laccase c.d. spectra in the beta-fold region or the maximum wavelength of the fluorescence emission. On chemical denaturation, however, the emission was red-shifted by about 20 nm. The laccase behaviour is substantially different from that of stellacyanin, a protein containing a single blue Cu ion, in which the thermal transition had higher specific enthalpy and induced a large change of the c.d. spectrum in the beta-fold region. The laccase denaturation behaviour is similar to that of ascorbate oxidase from zucchini (courgette; Cucurbita pepo) [Savini, D'Alessio, Giartosio, Morpurgo and Avigliano (1990) Eur. J. Biochem. 190, 491-495], suggesting a structural analogy. In both proteins heating may cause a change of tertiary structure through modifications of Cu co-ordination with loosening of the bonds between the structural domains at the interface of which the trinuclear Cu cluster is located.

Abstract:
Two different Cu2+-depleted derivatives of bovine serum amine oxidase (BSAO) have recently been prepared, which contain about 0.5 mol/dimer of phenylhydrazine-reactive topa quinone (TPQ) cofactor and, depending on the reagents used, about 0.2 or 0.7 residual Cu2+/dimer [Agostinelli, De Matteis, Sinibaldi, Mondovì and Morpurgo (1997) Biochem. J. 324, 497-501]. The benzylamine oxidase activity of both derivatives was < 5% and increased up to ≈ 20% on incorporation of Co2+, irrespective of the residual Cu2+ content, which was unaffected by the treatment according to atomic absorption and ESR spectroscopy. The residual Cu2+ ions appeared to be distributed one per dimer and to be bound to inactive subunits, whereas Co2+ was bound to active subunits. The change in the active site had an appreciable influence on the kinetic behaviour. With several amines, the kinetic parameters, Km and kc, measured for Co2+-BSAO were different from those for native BSAO. This excludes the possibility that the catalytic activity was due to residual Cu2+. Furthermore, Co2+ restored to nearly native level the intensity of the TPQ 480 nm band and the reactions with phenylhydrazine or benzylhydrazine, which had been slowed down or abolished, respectively, in Cu2+-depleted samples. The CD spectrum, measured for the derivative with low Cu2+ content, was compatible with Co2+ binding to the copper site. The amine oxidase activity of the Co2+ derivative, which cannot form a semiquinone radical as an intermediate of the catalytic reaction, strongly suggests that the Cu+-semiquinone is not an obligatory intermediate of BSAO catalytic pathway.

Abstract:
NN-Diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) was able to bind, at 1.0 mM concentration, only about 50% the Cu(II) ions of bovine plasma amine oxidase. Under reducing conditions, this Cu(II) was removed with inactivation of the enzyme. Up to 90% activity could be recovered by treatment with excess Cu(II). The organic cofactor, sensitive to carbonyl reagents, was reduced in the half-Cu-depleted protein and no longer bound phenylhydrazine. The fully reacted protein, in the presence of 10 mM-DDC, lost 50% Cu(II) upon storage at -20 degrees C, but in this case the residual Cu(II) was in the DDC-bound form and the cofactor was in the oxidized state, as it could still bind phenylhydrazine. In the presence of DDC, the rate of reaction with phenylhydrazine was always low, even at 50% DDC saturation, and all derivatives showed identical modifications of the optical and e.p.r. spectra with respect to the phenylhydrazone of the native protein. It is concluded that the two Cu(II) ions are not equivalent, that removal of a single Cu(II) is sufficient to inhibit the re-oxidation of the organic cofactor, and that both Cu(II) ions are in some way involved in the reaction with phenylhydrazine. After reaction with DDC, the optical and e.p.r. spectra of 63Cu(II)-amine oxidase and of 63Cu(II)-carbonic anhydrase [Morpurgo, Desideri, Rigo, Viglino & Rotilio (1983) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 746, 168-175] are very similar and show distorted equatorial co-ordination to Cu(II) of two sulphur atoms and two magnetically equivalent nitrogen atoms.

Abstract:
Objective: To study the antiparkinsonian activity of new 1,2-substituted imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acids in dopaminergic transmission suppression tests in mice and rats. Materials and methods: On a model of reserpine extrapyramidal disorders, the derivatives of imidazole-dicarboxylic acids (IEM2258, IEM2248, IEM2247) were injected into the lateral brain ventricles of the mice 30 minutes after injecting reserpine at the doses of 0.1–0.5 mmol. Locomotor activity was analyzed in the Open-field test 2 hours later. In the catalepsy model, the studied agents were injected, using a pre-implanted cannula, with a simultaneous intraperitoneal injection of haloperidol. The severity of catalepsy was assessed with the Morpurgo method. Amantadine was used as a comparator drug in all the tests. Results: It was shown that IEM2258 significantly increased the main indicators of locomotor activity in the Open-field test at all the studied doses. The value of the antiparkinsonian effect of IEM2258 at doses of 0.4–0.5 mmol significantly exceeded that of amantadine. The antiparkinsonian effect of IEM2247 was maximally expressed and was significantly different from those in the control and comparator group at doses of 0.2 and 0.3 mmol. For all the experimental groups, a significant decrease in the manifestations of catalepsy in comparison with control indexes was determined. Discussion: The results made it possible to suggest the involvement of imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acids derivatives in the process of experimental improvement of dopaminergic neuromodulation and efficiency in animals. Conclusion: The data showed a significant dose-dependent antiparkinsonian activity of new imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid derivatives, which makes it promising to develop these agents and to further search for effective and safe antiparkinsonian drugs in this pharmacological class.
