Full textThis study focuses on the morpheme le in Northern Sotho. It is sometimes confusing to establish the correct semantic function which the morpheme le expresses; and also to classify it into a certain word category. This study suggests the morphological features which the morpheme le bears in terms of its word categorization. The morpheme le in Northern Sotho can be used as a conjunction, a demonstrative pronoun, an agreement, a preposition, a copulative, an adverb and a complement as well. It is suggested in this study, ways of identifying the semantic function of the morpheme le in various contexts.

Full textThe issue of simple and compound negation morphemes system in French language has always attracted a lot of interest. However, diachronic linguistics tackles this question in an uneven way according to different periods of French language’s history. Thus, although it is regularly mentioned, no detailed study about system of negation in pre-Classical French (1550-1630) exists so far. Therefore, this work has dual benefits for linguistics research: on the one hand it sheds a new light on the question of grammatical markers of negation in French; on the other hand it renews questions on the pre-Classical French language, which has been a topic of growing interest over the last two decades. The goal of this research is first to offer a detailed description of the organisation and operation of the system of simple and compound negation grammatical markers (non, ne, ne…pas, ne…point, ne…jamais, etc.) according to their different usages as they appear in a large text corpus of pre-Classical period (1550-1630). Their competition is also investigated. Morphosyntax and semantic methods turned out to be very efficient, as well as the theoretical framework of language psychomecanics whose postulates allow an in depth analysis of the issues and intricacies involved in this research

'Shang' and 'xia' in Mandarin are a pair of morphemes that cover a wide range of uses. They are used to describe not only vertical spatial orientation but slso abstract relations such as temporal or possessive relations. Besides semantic versatility, 'shang' and 'xia' are also characterized by syntactic complexity: 'shang' canbe used as a localizer (a post-position), a verb, a deetrminative, and an adjective; 'xia', as a localizer (a post-position), a verb, a determinative, an adjective and a measure. The nature of the semantic relationship among the varions senses of 'shang' and amog the various senses of 'xia' is the interest of this thesis. 'Shang' and 'xia' are hypothesized to be two polysemous words. Evidence is provided in support of the hypothesis by presenting the core-periphery prototype structures of the two polysemous words. With the help of fesearch in non-objectivist approaches to semantics, the problem of polysem is tackled. Among non-objectivist approaches, the prototype approach and image schemas are the skeleton of the analysis. The results show that systematic relationship among the various senses of 'shang' and 'xia' each constitute a radial category. In the radial category of both 'shang ' and 'xia', the prototypical schema is verticality, which motivates other non-prototypical schemas by metaphorical extension, metonymy, or image schema transformations.
