Abstract:
Thesis (M.ED.) --University of Limpopo, 2009.
This study focuses on the morpheme le in Northern Sotho. It is sometimes confusing to establish the correct semantic function which the morpheme le expresses; and also to classify it into a certain word category. This study suggests the morphological features which the morpheme le bears in terms of its word categorization. The morpheme le in Northern Sotho can be used as a conjunction, a demonstrative pronoun, an agreement, a preposition, a copulative, an adverb and a complement as well. It is suggested in this study, ways of identifying the semantic function of the morpheme le in various contexts. This study reflects that the morpheme le in Northern Sotho can be used to denote: possession, accompaniment, location, additive focus, existentialism and honorifics.

Abstract:
Raw text data online has increased the need for designing artificial systems capable of processing raw data efficiently and at a low cost in the field of natural language processing (NLP). A well-developed morphological analysis is an important cornerstone of NLP, in particular when word look-up is an important stage of processing. Morphological analysis has many advantages, including reducing the number of word forms to be stored computationally, as well as being cost-efficient and time-efficient. NLP is relevant in the field of medicine, especially in automatic text analysis, which is a relatively young field in Swedish medical texts. Much of the stored information is highly unstructured and disorganized. Using raw corpora, this paper aims to contribute to automatic morphological segmentation by experimenting with state-of-art-tools for unsupervised and semi-supervised word segmentation of Swedish words in medical texts. The results show that a reasonable segmentation is more dependent on a high number of word types, rather than a special type of corpora. The results also show that semi-supervised word segmentation in the form of annotated training data greatly increases the performance.

Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040150/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The issue of simple and compound negation morphemes system in French language has always attracted a lot of interest. However, diachronic linguistics tackles this question in an uneven way according to different periods of French language’s history. Thus, although it is regularly mentioned, no detailed study about system of negation in pre-Classical French (1550-1630) exists so far. Therefore, this work has dual benefits for linguistics research: on the one hand it sheds a new light on the question of grammatical markers of negation in French; on the other hand it renews questions on the pre-Classical French language, which has been a topic of growing interest over the last two decades. The goal of this research is first to offer a detailed description of the organisation and operation of the system of simple and compound negation grammatical markers (non, ne, ne…pas, ne…point, ne…jamais, etc.) according to their different usages as they appear in a large text corpus of pre-Classical period (1550-1630). Their competition is also investigated. Morphosyntax and semantic methods turned out to be very efficient, as well as the theoretical framework of language psychomecanics whose postulates allow an in depth analysis of the issues and intricacies involved in this research

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of explicit teaching of morphemic analysis on vocabulary learning and comprehension and its transfer effects to novel words with sixth grade students. Because research states that vocabulary and the ability to decode unfamiliar words is vital for comprehension, an increase in vocabulary learning and comprehension was predicted. A sixth-grade reading class with low reading assessment results was specifically taught twelve affixes and roots chosen from a bank of morphemes tested in classroom theme and state reading assessments. The 18 students received pre and post assessments on comprehension and vocabulary with an additional post assessment on transfer effects. Results showed significantly higher post-assessment scores, but no visible improvement on student transfer to novel.

'Shang' and 'xia' in Mandarin are a pair of morphemes that cover a wide range of uses. They are used to describe not only vertical spatial orientation but slso abstract relations such as temporal or possessive relations. Besides semantic versatility, 'shang' and 'xia' are also characterized by syntactic complexity: 'shang' canbe used as a localizer (a post-position), a verb, a deetrminative, and an adjective; 'xia', as a localizer (a post-position), a verb, a determinative, an adjective and a measure. The nature of the semantic relationship among the varions senses of 'shang' and amog the various senses of 'xia' is the interest of this thesis. 'Shang' and 'xia' are hypothesized to be two polysemous words. Evidence is provided in support of the hypothesis by presenting the core-periphery prototype structures of the two polysemous words. With the help of fesearch in non-objectivist approaches to semantics, the problem of polysem is tackled. Among non-objectivist approaches, the prototype approach and image schemas are the skeleton of the analysis. The results show that systematic relationship among the various senses of 'shang' and 'xia' each constitute a radial category. In the radial category of both 'shang ' and 'xia', the prototypical schema is verticality, which motivates other non-prototypical schemas by metaphorical extension, metonymy, or image schema transformations.

Mulaudzi, Phalandwa Abraham. "A descriptive analysis of the morphology of the Tshiguvhu dialect of Venda." Diss., 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17535.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study an attempt is made to describe the morphological apects of Tshiguvhu. In chapter 1, it is indicated that historically, there was extensive early contact between Vhaguvhu and Balobedu and Tlokwa. In ,chapters 2 and 3, nouns and pronouns are analysed morphologically. Some similarities and differences between Tshiguvhu and Tshivenda are highlighted. These differences are ascribed to influences from Lobedu and Tlokwa. In chapters 4 and 5, the form of the verb and the use of verb forms in various tenses, where applicable, are described morphologically. Some verb roots and extensions have been influenced by Northern Sotho dialects whereas some have not. In chapter 6, the morphology of adverbs, interrogatives, conjunctions, ideophones and interjections are briefly described. In conclusion, it is indicated that Tshiguvhu is a dialect of Venda because of its cultural and historical bonds with Venda, although linguistically it shares some features with certain Northern Sotho dialects.
