Abstract:
Elena Essel (Msc) spoke to Ebony Torrington, Managing Editor of BioTechniques. Essel is a molecular biologist in Matthias Meyer's Advanced DNA Sequencing Techniques group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany). Essel studied biology at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Erlangen, Germany) for her bachelor's and in Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (Halle an der Saale, Germany) for her master's. Essel worked in Meyer's group on DNA extraction of very degraded material for her master's thesis. Meyer is an expert in developing new cutting-edge methods for researching ancient DNA, with a focus on skeletal remains, and more recently on sediment remains. Essel now focusses on DNA sampling and extraction aspects of the pipeline at Meyer's lab for the ancient DNA workflow.

Abstract:
Abstract Handel was born on 23 February 1685 in Halle, a German city on the river Saale, a substantial tributary of the Elbe. The birthdate is not recorded on the entry in the register recording his baptism (as Georg Friedrich Handel) on 24 February at the Ober-Pfarr-Kirche zu Unser Lieben Frauen (the Rectory Church dedicated to Our Lady, which stands in Halle’s market-place), but it is attested by other biographical sources from Handel’s lifetime.

Abstract:
Between 1990 and 2010 the city of Halle/Saale underwent a period of urban decline, loss of jobs and population. This chapter examines how different rationalities and practices of governing vacant housing have formed in the context of intersecting local, regional and national policies and projects in Halle/Saale. It draws attention to the conflicting rationalities and messy actualities of devaluing certain types of housing while reclaiming and promoting others. The chapter focuses on two districts, one centrally located with mainly early 20th century buildings and the other one peripherally located with pre-fabricated and standardized GDR housing from the 1960s. Different problematisations of vacancy are explored: while vacancy was mobilised as an opportunity for creative re-use and investment in the central district, it was seen as a sign for a lack of demand and excess in the peripheral district. Even though the existence of a large share of publicly- and municipally-owned rent-controlled housing has cushioned processes of social segregation, the social geography of Halle/Saale is changing as a result of these messy actualities of abandonment.
