Abstract:
<p>The sense of loss of a mother leads Anna Morgan to her imagined black identity. Being a Creole from Dominica, Morgan is alienated both in her home country and in London. Du Bois’s notion of double consciousness substantiates Morgan’s sense of alienation. The racial issue here is not only socially constructed, but it is also personally constructed, as Morgan does not consider England as her homeland although she is as white as English people. people. The character is struggling from identity conflict, as she internalizes the impact of the British colonialization to the black people in Dominica. She feels more black than white because of the image of blackness that she creates from the image of her mother and black women in general, as nurturing, warm and domestic. In addition to that, the geographic location contributes to Morgan’s sense of loss.</p>

Abstract:
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, language teachers have been asked to rapidly react and adapt to constantly changing teaching environments in order to understand their students’ needs in L2 learning and make judgments in conditions of uncertainty. The COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the need to understand how teachers’ identities evolve during such difficult times and situations. In response to this need, this study reports the findings from my qualitative case study on a Korean English teacher’s identity shift. Drawing upon Foucault’s (1983) notion of ethical self-formation, I examined how the Korean English teacher negotiated and developed her identity to adjust to drastically changing working environments as she weighted the benefits and challenges of online and offline education, particularly for novice Korean EFL learners. Data were collected through various sources from an experienced Korean English teacher, called Anna, at a regional foreign language center in South Korea over the course of two years. Due to the pandemic, she had to make the transition from offline to online teaching. Further, her center closed one year after the outbreak of the pandemic, and she was reassigned as a travelling teacher in a multi-school program for underachieving English students. The findings reveal that Anna became more agentive in searching for and utilizing multiple resources for teaching, showing her reflective and action-oriented practices to involve in ethical, practiced, and productive identity work (Miller, Morgan, & Medina, 2017). The findings contribute to expanding our understanding of the transformative potentials of language teachers’ identity.

From Colin Radford we have inherited the ‘fiction paradox’: How can we be moved by creatures of fiction? Answers recently offered by aestheticians presuppose a false theory of emotion and are inconsistent with emotional phenomenology as well as facts about human evolution, physiology, and anatomy. I argue that Kendall Walton's ‘Charles’ can genuinely fear the slime and yet avow that he does not consider it dangerous—all without being irrational. The solutions offered by Morreall, Moran, Hyslop, Boruah, Lamarque, and Neill are rejected as inadequate. Knowledge of how we can be moved probably lies outside philosophy altogether—in cognitive neuroscience.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to analyse and examine which images the morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the tabloid paper Aftonbladet choosed to use on their front pages when reporting about the terrorist attack in Stockholm 2017. We also wanted to examine if there were any differences or similarities between morning newspapers and tabloids images on their front pages.    Before our study we did a mapping where we examined how many images, between April 8 and April 30,  the two newspapers used when portraying the incident on their front page. The mapping helped structuring our process by creating categories before deciding which images we wanted to examine more closely. We conducted a qualitative study and used semiotic image analysis, visual rhetoric analysis, metonymy, metaphor and index. We analysed twelve pictures; seven from Aftonbladet and five from Dagens Nyheter.          By examining this we established that there were both differences and similarities between the newspapers. The biggest difference was that Aftonbladet used more dynamic images while Dagens Nyheter used more approximations. Aftonbladet´s images portrayed the attack with dramatic, close-ups images where the images felt more realistic and Dagens Nyheter portrayed the attack with more objective images. A similarity that we found was that both newspapers used images of authoritarian people and implied that the society stands united against the terror. We also found that the suspected terrorist, Rakhmat Akilov, was presented as a threat from the outside that destroyed “our” western world.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sports tourism is a newly faceted sector within tourism that is swiftly gaining popularity in Sweden. Today, a majority of the population know someone who has taken part in a fitness- holiday; thereby giving credence to its increased development. This study aims to analyze what the concept of sports tourism means to companies and customers, but also how this growing trend has affected the smaller companies in the Swedish tourism industry over the last five years. Both companies and customers postulate that fitness-holidays will continue to increase in demand as it gains traction. This essay aims to not only analyze the sorts of developments the customers are requesting, but also to see if their demands coincide with the developments that companies are looking to produce. A qualitative method has been applied to answer the questions posed in this essay; two interviews were conducted with smaller companies that sell fitness-holidays on the Swedish market. To examine the customers’ perspectives on the future developments; three additional group interviews were conducted with nine participants. The main theories that have been used for the analysis are the Service Supply Chain-model by Lisa Ellram, Wendy Tate and Corey Billington (2004), as well as the Tourism Industry Supply Chain by Xinyan Zhang, Haiyan Song and George Q. Huang (2009). The discussion on the concept of sports tourism is primarily based on a model created by Tom Robinson and Sean Gammon (2004). The results of the study reveal that it is difficult to extrapolate one general definition for the concept of sports-tourism; the definition varies in conjunction with the company and the customers’ experience. The developments in this sector has increased sales for the smaller companies who view their products to be unique offerings on the Swedish market; therefore, they feel they are not that affected by the other companies. The developments that consumers are requesting correspond quite well with the developments the companies are working to implement; both sides concur that flexibility and sustainability are the biggest challenges for the future.

Abstract:
Learning from traumatic events: a comparative case study of governmental close protection policies in the aftermath of the murder of Olof Palme and Anna LindhViolent and threatful crimes against politicians are as despicable as any other crime acts against citizen. However, if politicians are targeted solely due to their position – the act can seriously damage the state and central government. This paper compares reports of government commissions and investigations which were initiated after the murder of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme in 1986 and secretary of state Anna Lindh in 2003. The purpose is to analyse and compare the conclusions and distinguish the main arguments that led to those conclusions and decipher similarities and differences through the lens of Tom Christensen’s instrumental perspective as well as Peter May’s social policy learning theory. The methodological approach of a qualitative method for this study fosters a deeper understanding of the ideological stances. Furthermore, the qualitative approach of conducting interviews with officials in various government positions has allowed for a more nuanced and thoughtful analysis. Together with the commissions and report, the interviews provide a holistic perspective of the two timeframes. The research question has been posed as follows: When comparing government commissions regarding the close protection of the central government, which essential similarities and differences can be distinguished? The result suggests that, an ideological change regarding main threats against the central government has taken place. The main policy discussions in the aftermath of the murder of prime minister Olof Palme was terrorism and if it could have been prevented at the time being. One major policy change was the build-up of the Swedish counter-terrorist unit. The main policy discussions in the aftermath of the murder of Anna Lindh was the issue of citizens with severe mental illnesses and how to detect those that pose serious threats to the central government at an earlier stage. Furthermore, given the conclusions of the commissions and reports, it is possible to determine that ”social policy learning” has occurred as according to Peter May’s theory. However, the study also notes an crucial exception; government officials in need of close protection can henceforth conform the structure of it and determine whether they want it or not.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractMargaret Ann Harvey was born on 18 May 1792 in St Peter Port, which is the capital city of Guernsey, the second-largest of the Channel Islands; and died there on 4 April 1903 at the reported age of 110. In this contribution, her exceptional age is thoroughly validated. Considering the data collected on her parents and siblings, there is no possibility of an erroneous linkage, as the name of Margaret and Ann appears only once in the birth records, her family’s birth intervals were narrow, and the dates of death of her siblings have been checked. As she did not have children, her name was not found in civil registration records after her marriage in 1823 until her death in 1903. This lack of records might have made it difficult to prove that the person who died at age 110 in 1903 was the same person who married in 1823 at age 30. Fortunately, she was enumerated in six successive censuses from 1851 to 1901, and a comparison of the ages reported in these censuses and her exact ages shows only minor deviations. Moreover, numerous letters and her numerous diaries help us to follow her life during that long period. Upon reaching age 100, she became famous in Guernsey. Thus, there are many photos of her and press articles about her life. These data support the reliability of the reported chronology of her life events, and thus allow us to validate this exceptional case. Accordingly, we can state that Margaret Ann Harvey Neve is the first documented female supercentenarian. As in the case of recently deceased supercentenarian Emma Morano, her life spanned three successive centuries – albeit one century earlier.

Abstract:
AbstractThe second ASCL conference was held in February 2020, about 1 month after the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was documented in the United States and before evidence of community spread. Since then, COVID-19 has become a global pandemic that has disproportionately infected, hospitalized, and killed ethnic and racial minorities in the United States (Jacobson et al., Am J Prev Med 61(5):644–651, 2021; Moore et al., MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 69:1122–1126, 2020; Shiels et al., Ann Intern Med. https://doi.org/10.7326/m21-2134, 2021; American Cancer Society, Cancer facts & figures 2021. American Cancer Society, Atlanta, 2021). According to a report of provisional life expectancy estimates from the National Center for Health Statistics, the life expectancy for US Hispanics decreased 3 years (81.8–78.8) between 2019 and 2020. As a result, the life expectancy advantage held by Hispanics over non-Hispanic whites narrowed by 60%, suggesting poorer health and mortality outcomes for the US Hispanic population. It is estimated that 90% of this decline in the life expectancy gap is the result of mortality caused by COVID-19 (Arias et al., Provisional life expectancy estimates for 2020. National Center for Health Statistics, Hyattsville, 2021). Some speculate that this disease disparity exists because Hispanics and other underrepresented groups receive the greatest exposure to the virus. They are more likely to live in densely populated areas and multigenerational households; use public transportation; and have essential public-facing jobs in the service and healthcare sectors, where working from home is not an option (American Cancer Society, Cancer facts & figures 2021. American Cancer Society, Atlanta, 2021; Hooper et al., JAMA 323(24):2466–2467, 2020; Balogun et al., JAMA Oncol 6(10):1531–1532, 2020). If infected, they are also more likely to experience severe symptoms of COVID-19 because of comorbidities such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and other chronic conditions (Hooper et al., JAMA 323(24):2466–2467, 2020).

Abstract:
This essay looks at five Romantic-era women writers who invoke Mary Tighe in their works by name, quotation, or epigraph--Anna Maria Porter, Anna Letitia Barbauld, Alicia Lefanu, Lady Morgan, and Felicia Hemans--to consider what these invocations suggest about lines of affiliation, the construction of aesthetic communities, and attempts to shape or forecast reception. It argues that these woman writers create a citational network through the figure and work of Mary Tighe, to call attention to her significance and therein establish their own histories of influence and reception. Their citational practices produce a more expansive version of what Gerard Genette designates the ‘epigraph effect’ in Paratexts, affording opportunities for writers to signal their place in a cultural tradition, to acknowledge or choose their peers and predecessors, and to proleptically instantiate their consecration in a particular literary pantheon. They effectively create a canon of their own by building citational networks.

Abstract:
This chapter emphasizes how head nurses were in danger of losing their caps from so many Hitler salutes under the new hospital regime after the Brownshirt raid in 1933. It refers to uniformed doctors dressed up in white coats that were devoid of any technical expertise, which replaced the Jewish doctors that were taken as prisoners. It also mentions Dr. Mohamed Helmy’s memory on the bizarre treatment methods that the new staff introduced, which often put patients in mortal danger. The chapter cites Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg, who explicitly welcomed the subjugation of Arab nations to the will of Europe in his book The Myth of the Twentieth Century. It discusses the Nuremberg Laws that was introduced by the Nazi government in 1935 that was meant to capture its murder victims and astonished Dr. Helmy at the extent to which Muslims were spared by the law.

Abstract:
The De Morgan family continued to grow with the addition of George Campbell in 1841; Edward Lindsey in 1843; Anne Isabella in 1845. As she was raising her brood, Sophia’s interest in larger forms of consciousness played out in the practice of mesmerism, which was in some ways a reaction against contemporary medical practice. Snug in his library, De Morgan wrapped up his investigations of algebra, and set out to incorporate logic into his literalist view of reason. He built on ideas of logic as reason that were first proposed by Richard Whately. William Whewell acted as a sounding board for his ideas, while the Scottish philosopher William Hamilton was a fierce opponent.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the VaR of the MSCI emerging market index (MSCI-EMI) developed by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) is estimated using linear, nonlinear time series and ANN. In this context, the aim of the study is to estimate the VaR exceedance of the MSCI-EMI as a global financial risk indicator compared with traditional time series methods and ANN. In addition, the most effective method on this index is determined by statistical information criteria, and the comparative evaluation of the model selection criteria is carried out. The period of analysis is between December 1987-April 2020 with monthly frequency and VaR exceedance obtained with ARMA-GARCH, TGARCH, EGARCH, GJR, and ANN models. Confidence levels of models, VaR exceedance, and Kupeic statistics are obtained. VaR exceedances are examined through the superior model.

Abstract:
The article examines the role of secondary and tertiary characters in the novel “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy in creating an artistic whole work, in illustrating the typicality and uniqueness of life situations, in revealing the depths of the human psyche. The study of a complex roll call of images, consideration of parallels between characters, analysis of the similarities of characters in the final text and versions, as well as some episodes that were not included in the novel, allows you to show the movement of the writer’s thought and his attitude to the characters, to understand the author’s system of values. As in his earlier works, in Anna Karenina, Tolstoy depicts the spiritual world of a person and illuminates in detail the inner struggle of the individual. But when creating Anna Karenina, the writer turned not to particular oppositions of heroes, but tried to create a hierarchy containing all human qualities and traits, basing it on the only possible divine idea that embraces everything. The author of the work compares the images and behavioral characteristics of the secondary characters in the final text and draft materials, noting several significant figures and situations not included by the writer in the novel.

Abstract:
The article for the first time compares the techniques of depicting the inner world of the characters of the unfinished novel from the times of Peter I with the techniques of psychological characterization of the novel “Anna Karenina”. A comparative analysis of the elements of poetics of the two novels is undertaken in order to identify similarities or, conversely, to underline the differences between artistic means of historical novel and the novel “Anna Karenina”. Both works were created after Tolstoy had experienced a radical revision of the existing aesthetic views in the early 1870s, which led to the renewal of the system of artistic principles familiar to him. Based on the results of comparison, a conclusion is made about the thematic points of convergence between two novels, about the proximity of the elements of plot construction, the use of a single form of psychological analysis, the similarity of artistic techniques in describing psychological state of characters in the state of acute mental crisis. The undertaken research shows that in the novel devoted to Peter I and in the novel “Anna Karenina” Tolstoy recreated the mental perturbance of the characters, their thoughts, feelings, experiences reflected in their body language almost exclusively with the help of artistic detail, contrasting lexical pairs (“friend–foe”, “light–dark”, “clear–dim”), as well as a specific creative technique — semantic selection: repetition of one or two words, phrases, exclamations, that express psychological state of characters.

Abstract:
