Abstract:
The south-east Queensland region is currently experiencing the most rapid urbanisation in Australia. This growth in human population, industry and infrastructure puts pressure on the unique and diverse natural environment of Moreton Bay. Much loved by locals and holiday-goers, Moreton Bay is also an important biogeographic region because its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and saltmarshes provide a suitable environment for both tropical and temperate species. The bay supports a large number of species of global conservation significance, including marine turtles, dugongs, dolphins, whales and migratory shorebirds, which use the area for feeding or breeding. Environmental History and Ecology of Moreton Bay provides an interdisciplinary examination of Moreton Bay, increasing understanding of existing and emerging pressures on the region and how these may be mitigated and managed. With chapters on the bay's human uses by Aboriginal peoples and later European settlers, its geology, water quality, marine habitats and animal communities, and commercial and recreational fisheries, this book will be of value to students in the marine sciences, environmental consultants, policy-makers and recreational fishers.

Abstract:
Italian adventurer and sea captain Celso Cesare Moreno traveled the world lying, scheming, and building an extensive patron/client network to establish his reputation as a middleman and person of significance. Through his machinations, Moreno became a critical player in the expansion of western trade and imperialism in Asia, the trafficking of migrant workers and children in the Atlantic, the conflicts of Americans and Native Hawaiians over the fate of Hawaii, and the imperial competitions of French, British, Italian, and American governments in an important era of imperial expansion during the nineteenth century. This book teases out Moreno's enormous peculiarities and fascination as well as his significance. It examines how he repeatedly sought a role at the center of a globalizing world with gusto and had no qualms about lying or betraying others. Dragged by his uncontrollable polemical passions, the old Captain died alone, unloved by anyone and with no meaningful relations to others. With its focus on Moreno, this book illustrates some of the most puzzling cultural traits of emigrant Italian elites. Called a “carpetbagger,” “land pirate,” “extinct volcano,” among many other derogatory monikers, Celso emerges in this fascinating biography as a multifaceted, chameleon-like personality not reducible to a single epithet.

Rey, Terry. The Prophetess in Fantasy and Imagination. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190625849.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Methodologically departing somewhat from the strongly empirical chapters that precede it, Chapter 9, “The Prophetess in Fantasy and Imagination,” employs art history, literary analysis, and ethnography to consider the place of Romaine-la-Prophétesse in French and Caribbean fantasy and imagination. Raising the question as to why Romaine does not appear as a figure in Haiti’s celebrated artistic culture, save for brief mention in a single poem, the chapter analyzes his appearance in a novel by Victor Hugo, Bug Jargal, and another by the contemporary Cuban author Maya Moreno, In the Palm of Darkness, to assess imbalances between historical fact and literary imagination. It also considers briefly the prophetess’ subtly emergent status as an icon of both black and LGBT pride and liberation. Processes of racial and sexual identity impelled by Romaine’s historical reality and contemporary appropriation are highlighted in this, the final body chapter of the study.
