Abstract:
We study the number of primes with a given primitive root and in an arithmetic progression under the assumption of a suitable form of the generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Previous work of Lenstra, Moree and Stevenhagen has given asymptotics without an explicit error term, we provide an explicit error term by combining their work with the method of Hooley regarding Artin’s primitive root conjecture. We give an application to a Diophantine problem involving primes with a given primitive root.

Full text
Abstract:
Published data from long-term trials at Moree, New South Wales (1986–1996), and Billa Billa, Queensland (1986–1993), were analysed to determine the factors that influence the incidence of crown rot, caused by Fusarium pseudograminearum, in successive stubble-retained, no-till wheat crops and to examine the feasibility of developing a forecasting system for the disease. Polyetic progress of the epidemics could be described by a form of the logistic growth model with a carrying capacity (K) about 5% higher than the maximum recorded incidence at each site. Infection rate between seasons was positively correlated with yield and in-crop rainfall in the previous season, both of which were indicators of biomass. Infection rate was negatively correlated with rainfall parameters during the summer fallows, which were indicators of conditions favouring residue decomposition. In-crop rainfall, stored soil moisture and temperature parameters were not significantly correlated with infection rates. Multiple regressions based on incidence in the previous season, summer rainfall and either yield or in-crop rainfall in the previous season accounted for 65–81% of the variation in disease incidence at Moree and 86% of the variation in incidence at Billa Billa. Simplified parameters for use in on-farm forecasting systems were explored. The most useful of these was the square root of the product of incidence and either yield or in-crop rainfall, which gave sufficiently accurate predictions at each site to estimate the qualitative risk of crown rot in the following crop. This could be used to decide whether management options such as resistant varieties, rotations or burning were required.

Abstract:
Who is beneficially entitled to the money deposited in a joint bank account? In the great majority of cases, it is clear that the money is jointly owned and will pass on the death of one of the account holders to the survivor. However, things are not always simple and the law then has to decide as to the ownership of the money in a dispute between the surviving account holder and the estate of the deceased. The decision of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in Whitlock v Moree, a case on appeal from the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas is the latest decision on this topic.

Abstract:
The article describes the teaching and learning framework that underpins a Kinship Online Module aimed at delivering online cross-cultural training at the university level. It is based on an existing workshop designed and presented to non-Aboriginal staff and students by Lynette Riley, a Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi woman from Dubbo and Moree. In doing so, this article reflects on the pedagogical framework and adopted learning environment, and describes how the project adopts a ‘cultural praxis’ approach that combines a social constructivist, problem-based immersive learning approach with five complementary pedagogical approaches. These principles underpin the designing of a program that embeds diverse Aboriginal knowledge into this online teaching resource.

Abstract:
A cyclotomic polynomial Φn(x) is said to be ternary if n = pqr, with p, q and r distinct odd primes. Let M(p, q) be the maximum (in absolute value) coefficient appearing in the polynomial family Φpqr(x) with p < q < r, p and q fixed. Here a stronger version of the main conjecture of Gallot, Moree and Wilms regarding M(p, q) is established. Furthermore it is shown that there is an algorithm to compute M(p): = max {M(p, q): q > p}. Our methods are the most geometric used so far in the study of ternary cyclotomic polynomials.

Mitakakis, Teresa Zinovia. "Prevalence and distribution of Alternaria allergens in rural New South Wales, Australia." University of Sydney. Science, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/370.

Full text
Abstract:
In rural inland, south-eastern Australia, allergy to the fungus Alternaria is prevalent and an important risk factor for asthma. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the distribution and factors influencing allergens of Alternaria in the air. As airborne allergenic spores were thought to arise from harvesting of nearby crops, two towns with different agricultural practices were studied. Moree has two crop harvesting periods in summer and autumn whilst Wagga Wagga has one harvesting period in summer. Over two years, air was sampled daily in Wagga Wagga and Moree using Burkard traps. The reliability of measurements from a single site to represent the distribution of airborne concentrations of spores across each town was examined using data from three traps simultaneously, sited 2.0 to 4.9 km apart, over four weeks. Substantial intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were observed between the three sampling sites across both towns (ICC=0.52, 95% CI 0.30-0.71 to 0.76, 95% CI 0.61-0.87) when counts of Alternaria spores were relatively high. The correlation was poor when counts were low. Of more than 365 trap tapes examined, the two microscopic traverses strongly correlated for counts of Alternaria spores (ICC=0.95, 95% CI 0.94-0.96). Alternaria was detected in both towns throughout the two year period with peaks in spore concentrations reflecting the season of crop harvesting in each region. Individual exposure to spores was examined. Thirty three subjects (adults and children from nine families) wore nasal air samplers and personal air samplers both inside and outside their homes. The effects of activity, location, age on the inhalation of Alternaria spores and variation between individuals in the same environment were determined. Every subject inhaled Alternaria spores. Personal exposure to Alternaria in the home environment varied substantially between subjects. Levels of fungal spores inhaled were higher during periods of activity than during rest, and higher while subjects were outdoors than indoors. During outdoor activity, the number of Alternaria spores inhaled ranged from 4 to 794 (median 11) spores/hr. Sources of airborne spores was investigated by sampling air above wheat and cotton crops near the towns during harvesting and non-harvesting periods, in a grain and cotton seed storage shed, and a cotton gin. Substantially higher concentrations were detected above crops during harvesting periods compared to non-harvesting periods. Peaks were associated with harvesting and other activities where plants were manipulated. By regression analysis spore concentrations in both towns were modelled against those detected above crops and with weather variables. Only one crop sampling period (cotton harvest) independently correlated with concentrations in town. Analysis combining all data showed concentrations of spores above crops correlated with spore concentrations in the town when lagged by one day. Variables of rainfall and maximum temperature influenced concentrations in both towns, and wind direction in Wagga Wagga alone. Parents of asthmatic children were asked by questionnaire in which locations symptoms were provoked. Asthma was reported to be exacerbated at grain farms and with disturbance of local vegetation in town and home gardens. Nasal sampling confirmed that activities that disturbed dust or vegetation increased the inhalation of spores. The factors that release allergen from spores were determined in a modified Halogen immunoassay. Approximately 60% of spores released allergen, and the proportion was influenced by isolate, nutrient availability, viability, and not influenced by sunlight or culture age up to 21 days. Germinating the spores significantly increased the proportion that released total allergen and Alt a 1 (p<0.0001). Alt a 1 appears to be a minor contributor to the total allergen released from spores except when spores have germinated. Conclusions: People living in inland rural regions of Australia are exposed to substantial quantities of allergenic spores of Alternaria. Exposure is a highly personal event and is largely determined by disturbance of local vegetation releasing spores such as from nearby crops by wind, harvesting, slashing, transport and processing of produce, and from within town and home gardens. Most spores inhaled are likely to be allergenic, with potency potentially increasing with viability.

Abstract:
Owning and operating airports is an expensive business. For many local governments and private corporations involved, the business of airport management can be extremely lucrative when the facility and the operation are effectively and efficiently administered. For the DoD, airport management is a huge expense. During this time of historic budget reductions, one wonders whether the existing portfolio of military airfields can be sustained. The U.S. Air Force portfolio of airfields currently in place in the European theater is the focus of this research project because the United States has an extensive and long-standing inventory of airfields there. Ultimately, this thesis asks whether significant strategic and political changes necessitate a different approach to U.S. military airport management in Europe. The U.S. Air Force should stay in Europe, but it should convert some of its heavy, main operating bases to more flexible, lighter installations for both economic and strategic reasons.

Most people recur to the consumption of cigarettes in search of pleasure and relaxation to calm the anxiety. It is known that these conventional cigarettes contain chemical additives that aggravate the health of people. In the following research work, the implementation of a cigarette without chemical additives made of the mapacho plant was evaluated, a product that is consumed in the Peruvian jungle, which can offer the same experience that a person has with a conventional cigarette. The final business model of the project and the validations that were made for each quadrant will be presented. Different experiments were carried out with people who smoke commercial cigarettes to validate if the product was accepted. Also, we realized that the mint flavor was requested when we offered the product in the experiments for which we decided to offer this new flavor. After validations and experiments, a final packaging was obtained with two presentations of cigarettes: traditional and mint. The sales of the final products were made through Facebook and directly with the people who already knew about the product. Finally, as a result of sales and expenses, plans and three-year projections of the budgets of the areas of operations, human resources, marketing, corporate social responsibility and finance were developed.

Abstract:
Between the 17th century and the first half of the 19th century, temples figure in good place in the itinerary of travelers. Literature is at first their only reference for identifying and understanding these places of worship. In the middle of the 18th century, Caylus published his Recueil d’Antiquités which privileges the strict archaeological point of view for the study of monuments. This epistemological upheaval is reflected on the ground. From excavation techniques to recording and presentation of data, early archaeologists think of remains as objects of knowledge to understand how religious institutions are organized on a territorial scale. However, it is necessary to wait until the beginning of the XIXe century so that the excavation of the temples acquires a scientific rigor. It was during this pivotal period for the history of archeology that appeared the first theoretical essays on the Greek religion. On the religious topography, we wonder about the interest of having the temples away from the dwellings, about the importance given to the urban sanctuaries, about the path of the faithful during the Great Panathenaeans and the supposed link between the location of the temple and the divinity that is dedicated to it. We are also interested in religious architecture. Beyond the aesthetic and technical considerations, the conjectures relate to the destination of the temples, the architectural orders, the polychrome and its effects in the context of religious ceremonies but also on the hypethrum architecture and the interest of the light for the exercise of worship. Complementary to the monumental approach, sculpture is also approached under the prism of religion. They explain the archaism of the pediments of the temple of Aphaia to Aegina by religious superstitions. They wonder about the representation of the god among the Greeks in that it is different from the representation of man. Finally, when the sculptures are in the state of vestiges, the first archaeologists question the myths

In this work we present a study of Morse and Morse-Bott theories in the context of dynamical systems. We consider a Riemannian smooth, closed n-dimensional manifold M. Given a Morse-Smale function f :M !R, we associate f to the Morse-Smale-Witten chain complex, which recovers the homology of the manifold M (Morse Homology Theorem). More generally, any Morse-Bott-Smale function f :M !R can be associated to the Morse-Bott-Smale chain complex, which is a multicomplex that coincides with the Morse-Smale-Witten complex when f is a Morse function. The Morse-Bott Homology Theorem shows that the homology of thismulticomplex also coincides with the homology of M and its proof has as a particular case a proof for the Morse Homology Theorem.

Abstract:
Though we live in an age of uncertainty, we are constantly surrounded by what is predictable and routine. What happens when the comfort of our understanding is questioned? This body of work developed out of my experimental curiosity and desire to merge the familiar with the unexpected. Incorporating furniture and found objects brings a level of familiarity to the viewer, but manipulating the usual and adding strange elements causes inquiry. All of the components are set up into narrative tableaus and every part is considerably important to the whole. The installation explores humor and fear related to the grotesque and the uncanny, exploring contradictory elements such as: anthropomorphic and foreign, vibrant and static, seductive and repulsive. Each scene reveals no answers but poses only questions, inviting the viewer to fully experience their surroundings and come up with their own conclusions. We often exist between the margins of the known and the unknown but our understanding of this existence is purely individual.
