Abstract:
In this article, the author examines the causes, course and results of the Ottoman military campaigns in the Peloponnese in the second quarter of the 15th century. The author comes to the conclusion that the raids of the Ottoman commander Turahan Bey in 1423, 1431 and 1435 were rather local acts of aggression aimed at intimidating the Morean despots and were intended to prevent the expansion of Byzantine influence in Greece and in the north of the Peloponnese. At the same time, the Ottoman campaign against the Peloponnese in 1446 had the character of a punitive expedition. Sultan Murad II personally led the invasion of the Morea, which speaks of the desire of the Ottomans to eliminate the center of resistance in this region once and for all. The shameful vassalage, which the Despotate of Morea fell into after the sack of the Peloponnese by the Ottomans, actually put an end to the attempts of the despot Constantine Palaiologos to create a strong, independent and self-sufficient state in the place of the Morea.

Abstract:
The cultural politics of Catholic restoration under Mary Tudor have been as crucial to the historical legacy of Thomas More as More's image was to the regime's own historical self-presentation. Not only did the Marian period see the first reappearance in print of many of More's writings after twenty years, the overwhelming presence of More's figure and work in official Catholic discourse, especially from 1556 onwards, also generated many instances of implicit Morean echoes pervading a great variety of Marian literary texts and genres. This essay analyses a number of such hidden presences of More within classical translations of the period, from John Brende's History of Quintus Curtius, which was issued almost simultaneously with the 1553 Marian edition of More's Dialogue of Comfort, to George Colvile's Boethius and Nicholas Grimald's De officiis (both published in 1556), whose appearance coincided with the preparation of More's English Workes for print. As it emerges, such implicit echoes and allusions to More's life and writings not only reshaped the classical works themselves, both updating them and enriching them with additional cultural and political significations; above all they helped to invest the program of Marian religious restoration with the credentials of classical learning promoted by the early Tudor humanists.

Abstract:
The history of the literary reception of Thomas More's Utopia in Portugal has been a tale of omissions, censorships and deferred translations that highlight a flaw within the Portuguese cultural system. Indeed, it is somewhat ironic that such a representative work of both Western literature and thought, historically associated with the opening of the world's geographical horizons, and which ascribed to a Portuguese sailor, Raphael Hythloday, the discovery of an ideal place, was first translated into Portuguese only in the second half of the twentieth century. However, the first decade of the twenty-first century seems to bode a more auspicious literary fortune for More's Utopia within the Portuguese literary idiom: not only has an edition of More's work finally been translated from the original Latin, but also two novels were published in 2004, A lenda de Martim Regos, by Pedro Canais, and Rafael, by Manuel Alegre. In the context of both books' plots, they rewrite the complex traits of the character of the Portuguese sailor and discoverer of the ideal island. The same reinvention of the character of Raphael had already been attempted, in 1998, by José V. de Pina Martins in his long dialogic Morean narrative, Utopia III. In this essay, I will focus both on the documental sources related to Portuguese culture that are at the root of More's Utopia and on some relevant aspects of the reception of the character of Raphael Hythloday within the aforementioned novels.

Abstract:
A függelékben továbbá megtalálható a közel másfél száz verssor irodalmi fordítása. The study examines the origins and characteristics of a unique Byzantine ‘epic’ in the Chronicle of Morea : the description of the Battle of Pelagonia and the exploits of Sir Geoffroy de Bruyères. Although the professional literature agrees on that the episode is likely based on folk poetry and oral tradition, many questions (such as literary crosstalk, intertextual connections, the author’s intentions etc.) remain unanswered. The study presents the historical context of the Chronicle, examines the person of Sir Geoffroy de Bruyères and the potential intertextual relations of his epic, and analyses the Hungarian relations of the Battle of Pelagonia. The literary translation of the nearly 150 lines of the battle is attached in the appendix.

Abstract:
Perhaps the most notable achievement of the so-called renaissance in Morean studies in recent years has been to provide the historiography with a new focus, namely the phase of More's career that begins in the aftermath of Utopia (1516) and concludes with his imprisonment in 1534. Hitherto, interest in that period was confined largely to the domestic scene celebrated in Holbein's famous portrait and drawings, the household at Chelsea as a centre of humanist culture, Christian piety and cosy family virtue. Yet this was the period of More's public career in which he served as a councillor to Henry vm and in a number of major administrative posts before his elevation to succeed Cardinal Wolsey as lord chancellor in 1529. It was also the period in which he assumed a leading role in the campaign against the Reformation in England, partly as a prosecutor of heresy on behalf of the Crown, but more spectacularly as a polemicist, specifically commissioned by the Church to defend orthodox doctrine against the challenge of the reformers – a task on which he expended some million words in the period between his tract against Luther in 1523 and the changed circumstances which induced a more devotional literary mode in the much acclaimed Tower Works.

Abstract:
The isle of Utopia might be seen as a possible earthly Paradise, achieved by enlightened people in quest of perfection on earth. It has most of the elements of an urban paradise but there remain aspects of the postlapsarian working world. In no way is it Eden. This paper will look for unexpected paradisiacal elements in Thomas More’s writings and propose an assessment of his representations of after-life. A rapid survey of his major works will show the evolution of a lifetime in quest of heaven, and will attempt to draw a draught of More’s Paradise and of the road leading to it.

For these redshifts, the data of observed apparent magnitude and luminosity distance are used for the comparison with the obtained theoretical values.

Abstract:
Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), the nineteenth century French painter, accumulated more than a thousand ancient and modern prints during his career. This thesis presents the first thorough study of these prints, treating them as the print collection of an artist. It contains the first catalogue of the prints owned by Moreau, which have all been kept at the Gustave Moreau Museum in Paris. Based on this catalogue, quantitative research reveals the main trends of Moreau’s print collection with precise figures. The most important prints in his collection are then discussed and Moreau's taste in prints is compared with that of other contemporary artists such as Degas and Giacomelli. Some newly discovered visual sources of Moreau are also identified. Finally, the system used to organise his collection and his taste in prints are compared with those of other pre-nineteenth century print collectors and theoretician. Placing Moreau’s print collection in a broader context than the nineteenth century reveals the complex features of Moreau as a print collector, giving him a special position in the history of print collections

Abstract:

Abstract:
Some domestic waste incinerators [1] have operated successfully with refractory tile systems for tube protection without using mortar to bond the tiles to the tube walls. Most tile protection systems installed around the world employ a paste of mortar behind the tiles to develop a rigid fixing system, with the presumption that the mortar provides another layer of tube protection behind the tiles. This paper examines the issues behind these approaches to tube wall protection and propose some guidelines for the use of refractories in these systems.
