Abstract:
IntroductionIn 2005 Elizabeth Parker and fellow researchers described the first case of Hyperthymestic Syndrome, a woman going by initials AJ. Thereafter, a handful more of such cases have emerged. Older descriptions of extraordinary memory in medical literature mainly considered semantic and working memories. Jorge Luis Borges in his 1930s short story ‘Funes, his Memory’ writes about his, presumably fictitious, encounter with a man named Ireno Funes who possessed an extraordinary memory and a knack for keeping track of briefest of passing moment. Among many qualities that Funes and AJ share are their extraordinary memories, obsession for keeping track of time, and their problems with abstraction. After describing his extraordinary memory, Borges says of Funes, ‘I suspect nevertheless, that he was not very good at thinking. To think is to ignore (or forget) differences, to generalize, to abstract.’ Similarly, AJ has been described to have impaired abstraction, hypothesis formation and conceptual shifting. Moreover, both Funes and AJ see their capability as a burden rather than a gift. “My memory, sir, is like a garbage heap.” Says Funes.ObjectivesA brief exploration of Jorge Luis Borges’ works in the context of autobiographical memory.MethodsThe comparisons between Borges’ description of his character’s autobiographical memory and findings of modern research techniques will be done qualitatively.ResultsEffort is made to undersatnd Borges philosophy in context of mordern memory research.ConclusionsAn in depth look into Borges’ philosohies linking perception of time, coding of memory, abstration and language can inform further line of research regarding autobiographical memory.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract:
Here Horace's Catius lists restorative foods for drinkers. There seem to be two stages of drinking and two corresponding restoratives: the ‘marcens’ or drooping imbiber may be revived for more by prawns and snails, but not by lettuce, bad for the acidic and vinous stomach, while the man who is further gone needs ham and sausages or anything of that sort from the cook-shops. ‘Immorsus’ causes some difficulty here. It is usually taken with an understood ‘stomachus’ and translated ‘roused’ or ‘excited’ (with wine), but it is surely better to understand not ‘stomachus’ but ‘potor’, giving the elegant balance ‘marcentem…recreabis…potorem…[potor] flagitat immorsus refici’, with both verbs of restoration having the drinker for object. The sense usually given to ‘immorsus’ also seems doubtful: ‘immordeo’ is found only twice in classical Latin and only here in this metaphorical sense, and ‘mordeo’ in such contexts means not to rouse the stomach but to cause it to smart or sting, hardly the effect of wine – cf. Scribonius Largus 188 ‘[aconita] mordet autem stomachum et cor adficit’, Pliny, Nat. 27.133 ‘[radix] gustu acri mordet’.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, using the tenets of Situation-Bound Utterances (SBUs) (Kecskes 2000, 2010) and referring to Pragmatic Act Theory (PAT) (Mey 2001), the verb mordan (‘to die’ in English), and its different realisations are analysed among Persian speakers. Through the analysis of authentic talk in interaction, this study aims to ponder nonstandard (situation-derived) meanings of the term mordan and its different SBUs. The primary focus of the study is on strings of linguistic events as well as the “conventions of usage” (Morgan 1978) or cultural understanding that may lead to standard and nonstandard meanings considering mordan and its different SBUs. The findings suggest that the SBUs regarding mordan, a neglected sociolinguistic context, not only is affected by its actual situational characteristics but also by prior context encoded in utterances used, which manifests culture-specific ways of thinking (Capone 2018; Wong 2010). Overall, 19 SBUs and 7 generic categories were identified with regard to the verb mordan in Persian. This paper exhibits that mordan is a versatile verb, which, when combined with situational/contextual factors, conveys different nonstandard functions that fulfil social needs. This study will also refer to linguistic features underlying SBUs that are influential in assigning various distinct meanings to the verb mordan in Persian.

Przekład na podstawie: „Do We Believe in Penal Substitution?”, Philosophical Papers 26 (1997): 203-209.

Abstract:
In this paper I start with Adorno’s famous and provocative statement “To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric”, aimed at asking whether art was still possible in the age of genocides. Then, I take into examination Adorno’s concept of commitment in art – which is closely related to these questions - and the meaning itself of the notion of “Auschwitz” in Adorno’s philosophy. Analyzing what Adorno called “true” art (i.e. art provided with a relevant “truth content”) leads to take into consideration what he understood vice-versa as false or untrue art, in particular mass culture and popular music. Adorno would have probably considered as a sort of blasphemy or heresy the idea itself to write and perform pop-rock songs about such subjects as genocide, but I argue that his views rely on some prejudices that negatively condition his philosophy of art and especially of music. The songs on the Armenian genocide written and performed by the heavy metal band System of a Down serve here as a profitable example that may be of help to foster a critical rethinking of some aspects of Adorno’s aesthetics.

Scanlon, Thomas. "Diophantine Geometry from Model Theory." Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 7, no. 1 (March 2001): 37–57. http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/2687822.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract§1. Introduction. With Hrushovski's proof of the function field Mordell-Lang conjecture [16] the relevance of geometric stability theory to diophantine geometry first came to light. A gulf between logicians and number theorists allowed for contradictory reactions. It has been asserted that Hrushovski's proof was simply an algebraic argument masked in the language of model theory. Another camp held that this theorem was merely a clever one-off. Still others regarded the argument as magical and asked whether such sorcery could unlock the secrets of a wide coterie of number theoretic problems. In the intervening years each of these prejudices has been revealed as false though such attitudes are still common. The methods pioneered in [16] have been extended and applied to a number of other problems. At their best, these methods have been integrated into the general methods for solving diophantine problems. Moreover, the newer work suggests limits to the application of model theory to diophantine geometry. For example, all such known applications are connected with commutative algebraic groups. This need not be an intrinsic restriction, but its removal requires serious advances in the model theory of fields.

Abstract:
At the time of his death, in 1704, the library of John Locke held 269 volumes of philosophy—but 275 volumes of geography and travel. Works of geography drew on discoveries related in books of travel, but Locke did nevertheless see them as distinct genres. In both, his holdings were extensive. He owned several volumes of maps; the great recent surveys of Africa, America, and Japan printed by John Ogilby; and the descriptions of the world by Abbot, Purchas, Morden, and Moll. It was in books of travel, though, of which Locke owned 195, where his holdings were most remarkable. He owned the massive collections of Ramusio (in Italian), de Bry (in Latin), Thévenot (in French), and Hakluyt and Purchas (in English). He owned accounts of the well-known voy- ages of Hariot to Virginia, de Léry to Brazil, Sandys to the Ottoman Empire, Gage to the West Indies, and Choisy to Siam. He owned as well accounts of dozens of more minor voyages, such as those of Blount to the Levant, Monconys to Syria, Ray to the Continent, Josselyn to New England, and Fryke to the East Indies. No student of Locke’s library has failed to remark upon what Harrison and Laslett, its modern editors, have called its ‘great strength’ in these areas. This is to understate the matter, for it seems that among libraries of its size in late Stuart England, only the library of Robert Hooke (and perhaps that of Robert Boyle) rivalled Locke’s in works of geography and travel.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article discusses the concept of “space” from the point of view of scientific, philosophical and linguistic concepts, describes the historical genesis of this phenomenon, starting from ancient philosophy and mythology to the present. Content characteristics of space in the works of famous philosophers and linguists are given. The purpose of the article is to identify and describe one of the main lexical means of representing the concept of “space”, in this case, verbs, on the basis of two distantly related languages Erzya and Finnish, to reveal common features in the expression of spatial relations in these languages. Materials and Methods. The material of the study was illustrative examples obtained as a result of continuous and partial sampling from texts of various genre and functional styles, including print media, publications of a scientific and educational nature, various dialect and folklore texts included in the linguistic corpus KORP. The main research methods were synchronous and comparative analysis, as well as the method of descriptive and complex analysis of linguistic material. Results and Discussion. One of the central means of conveying spatial relations in the Erzya and Finnish languages are verbs. Along with verbs that have the semantics of movement and location, spatial meanings can express verbs of various semantic groups, such as speaking, non-directional action, state, physical action. The classification of Erzya and Finnish verbs is given, built on the principle of semantic characteristics and including three groups, each of which is represented by two subgroups. Conclusion. The study made it possible to reveal the scientific, philosophical and linguistic essence of the concept of space, taking into account historical processes, as well as to identify ways of its explication on the material of verbal lexemes that have spatial semantics in the Erzya and Finnish languages.

Abstract:
John Banville’s The Sea (2005) has its entire story drawn on memory. Through a close textual analysis, the paper examines the novel through the framework of memory. The paper is structured around the ideas put forth by the philosopher Edward S. Casey and examines how memories play a significant role in forming an identity within the individual and how memories are formed from spaces. Banville through his narrative techniques through the character indirectly presents the reality of the world. His withdrawal into the past by Max in the novel is not part of a theme but rather a unique narrative strategy employed by Banville. An individual has a sense of connection to their world with frequent interactions with the spaces around them. The research investigates how the spaces instigate the journey to the past in the character Max Morden. The sea and the house where Max spent his childhood are the spaces that aid in giving a sense of identity to Max who feels lost after the death of his wife. In a journey of searching for himself, he ends up visiting the place where he spent a holiday vacation during his childhood. It is through the engagement with these spaces and recollected memories from them that the character Max ultimately comes to a self-realization of his lost identity and in the end feels a sense of belonging to the world.

Abstract:
The article considers a number of problems of studying the large Golden Horde cities of the Lower Volga and the monuments surrounding them. Attempts are made to economically model the territories under consideration during the Golden Horde time, reconstruct the social appearance of the Lower Volga settlements of this period, and based on numismatic materials conclusions are made about the chronological stages of the development of various groups of monuments. The burial ceremony is characterized; data on Russian and Mordvin population in cities and their regions is given. Attention is paid to the economic connections of the largest cities of the Lower Volga with their regions in the times of the Jochid Empire.
