Abstract:
IntroductionIn 2005 Elizabeth Parker and fellow researchers described the first case of Hyperthymestic Syndrome, a woman going by initials AJ. Thereafter, a handful more of such cases have emerged. Older descriptions of extraordinary memory in medical literature mainly considered semantic and working memories. Jorge Luis Borges in his 1930s short story ‘Funes, his Memory’ writes about his, presumably fictitious, encounter with a man named Ireno Funes who possessed an extraordinary memory and a knack for keeping track of briefest of passing moment. Among many qualities that Funes and AJ share are their extraordinary memories, obsession for keeping track of time, and their problems with abstraction. After describing his extraordinary memory, Borges says of Funes, ‘I suspect nevertheless, that he was not very good at thinking. To think is to ignore (or forget) differences, to generalize, to abstract.’ Similarly, AJ has been described to have impaired abstraction, hypothesis formation and conceptual shifting. Moreover, both Funes and AJ see their capability as a burden rather than a gift. “My memory, sir, is like a garbage heap.” Says Funes.ObjectivesA brief exploration of Jorge Luis Borges’ works in the context of autobiographical memory.MethodsThe comparisons between Borges’ description of his character’s autobiographical memory and findings of modern research techniques will be done qualitatively.ResultsEffort is made to undersatnd Borges philosophy in context of mordern memory research.ConclusionsAn in depth look into Borges’ philosohies linking perception of time, coding of memory, abstration and language can inform further line of research regarding autobiographical memory.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract:
Here Horace's Catius lists restorative foods for drinkers. There seem to be two stages of drinking and two corresponding restoratives: the ‘marcens’ or drooping imbiber may be revived for more by prawns and snails, but not by lettuce, bad for the acidic and vinous stomach, while the man who is further gone needs ham and sausages or anything of that sort from the cook-shops. ‘Immorsus’ causes some difficulty here. It is usually taken with an understood ‘stomachus’ and translated ‘roused’ or ‘excited’ (with wine), but it is surely better to understand not ‘stomachus’ but ‘potor’, giving the elegant balance ‘marcentem…recreabis…potorem…[potor] flagitat immorsus refici’, with both verbs of restoration having the drinker for object. The sense usually given to ‘immorsus’ also seems doubtful: ‘immordeo’ is found only twice in classical Latin and only here in this metaphorical sense, and ‘mordeo’ in such contexts means not to rouse the stomach but to cause it to smart or sting, hardly the effect of wine – cf. Scribonius Largus 188 ‘[aconita] mordet autem stomachum et cor adficit’, Pliny, Nat. 27.133 ‘[radix] gustu acri mordet’.

Dieser Artikel ist zugleich autobiographisches Zeugnis (Kreissler ist 1917 geboren) und historische Analyse. Er zeigt das Ansteigen des „doppelköpfigen“(christlich-sozialen und national-sozialistischen) Antisemitismus während der Ersten Republik. Dem „gemässigten“ verbalen Antisemitismus der Nachfolger Luegers (insbesonders Leopold Kunschaks) antwortete sehr rasch der mörderische Antisemitismus der österreichischen Nazis, der sich in gezielten Morden (des Schriftstellers Hugo Bettauer, des Juweliers Futterknecht und des Philosophen Moritz Schlick) äusserte. Der Fall Moritz Schlick ist besonders aufschlussreich : er zeigt den mächtigen Einfluss der antisemitischen Ideologie im Universitätsbereich und das Verständnis und die Nachsicht, die Medien und Justiz Mördern mit antisemitischen Argumenten entgegenbrachten (selbst wenn nur der Geist und nicht der Körper jüdisch war).

In diesem Aufsatz werden Beiträge zur Philosophie in den Schriften einiger katholischer Priester, Philosophielehrer in Kroatien von 1945 bis 1991, erörtert. Neben Einleitung und Schluss umfasst der Hauptteil der Abhandlung folgende Kapitel: 1. Kurze Übersicht zum Ver-hältnis der kommunistischen Regierung zur Katholischen Kirche in Kroatien von 1945 bis 1991; 2. Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschulen in Kroatien und deren Zeitschriften von 1945 bis 1991 und 3. Philosophische Themen in den Publikationen von einigen katholischen Geistlichen im Zeitraum 1945 bis 1991. Da die Kommunistische Partei in der Zeit von 1945 bis 1991 in Kroatien an der Macht war, hat sie mit ihren repressiven Maßnahmen, Verfolgungen und Morden das gesamte Leben der kroatischen Gesellschaft und die Aktivitäten der Katholi-schen Kirche stark beeinflusst. Im Hinblick auf diese Tatsache werden philosophische Abhand-lungen, die einige Priester als Philosophielehrer verfasst haben, erforscht. Die philosophischen Themen, mit denen sie sich befasst haben, waren vielfältig: die Philosophie von Nikolai Berdjajew; Dialog mit Marx; Beiträge zur Kosmologie, Ontologie, Theodizee; die Philosophie von Baruch Spinoza; Grenzfragen zur Philosophie, Theologie und Naturwissenschaften. Fol-gende kirchliche Philosophielehrer werden in diesem Beitrag erfasst: Josip Kribl, Ivan Devčić, Mijo Škvorc, Tomo Vereš, Božo Milanović, Ante Kusić, Krsto Kržanić, Vjekoslav Bajsić und Rudolf Brajčić.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, using the tenets of Situation-Bound Utterances (SBUs) (Kecskes 2000, 2010) and referring to Pragmatic Act Theory (PAT) (Mey 2001), the verb mordan (‘to die’ in English), and its different realisations are analysed among Persian speakers. Through the analysis of authentic talk in interaction, this study aims to ponder nonstandard (situation-derived) meanings of the term mordan and its different SBUs. The primary focus of the study is on strings of linguistic events as well as the “conventions of usage” (Morgan 1978) or cultural understanding that may lead to standard and nonstandard meanings considering mordan and its different SBUs. The findings suggest that the SBUs regarding mordan, a neglected sociolinguistic context, not only is affected by its actual situational characteristics but also by prior context encoded in utterances used, which manifests culture-specific ways of thinking (Capone 2018; Wong 2010). Overall, 19 SBUs and 7 generic categories were identified with regard to the verb mordan in Persian. This paper exhibits that mordan is a versatile verb, which, when combined with situational/contextual factors, conveys different nonstandard functions that fulfil social needs. This study will also refer to linguistic features underlying SBUs that are influential in assigning various distinct meanings to the verb mordan in Persian.

Przekład na podstawie: „Do We Believe in Penal Substitution?”, Philosophical Papers 26 (1997): 203-209. Przekład za zgodą Wydawcy Artykuł D. Lewisa rozważa dopuszczalność poniesienia kary w zastępstwie za winowajcę w odniesieniu do aktualnie obowiązującego systemu prawa karnego, w którym kara nie pełni funkcji rekompensaty, i do chrześcijańskiej interpretacji śmierci Chrystusa w kategoriach Odkupienia. Może wydawać się, że obecnie kara zastępcza nie jest akceptowana, okazuje się jednak, że de facto akceptowana jest wybiórczo. Przynajmniej niektórzy chrześcijanie rozumieją śmierć Chrystusa w kategoriach spłacenia długu win grzeszników, ale jednocześnie nie dopuszczają możliwości, by przyjaciel mordercy poniósł za niego karę więzienia. Większość z nas uznaje możliwość kary zastępczej w odniesieniu do kar pieniężnych, ale nie w odniesieniu do dowolnej innej kary. W obu wypadkach w przekonaniach na temat dopuszczalności kary zastępczej wyraźnie brakuje spójności. Skoro jednak wybiórcze dopuszczenie kary zastępczej jest tak powszechne, być może nie jest pozbawione sensu.

Der Beitrag beginnt mit Adornos provokanter Aussage »Nach Ausschwitz ein Gedicht zu schreiben, ist barbarisch« und fragt, ob Kunst im Zeitalter der Völker- morde überhaupt noch möglich ist. Im Anschluss untersuche ich Adornos Begriff des Engagements in der Kunst, der ja eng mit dieser Frage verbunden ist, und die Bedeutung von »Auschwitz« in seiner Philosophie. Adornos Vorstellung von »wahrer« Kunst (d. h. Kunst mit einem relevanten »Wahrheitsgehalt«) führt dazu, den Gegenbegriff »falsche« oder »unwahre« Kunst, insbesondere Massenkultur und Popmusik, zu untersuchen. Adorno hätte es wahrscheinlich als eine Art Blasphemie angesehen, über Themen wie den Völkermord Pop- oder Rock-Songs zu schreiben und aufzuführen, aber das hier vertretene Argument ist, dass seine diesbezügliche Meinung auf Vorurteilen beruht, die seine Kunst- und Musikphilosophie negativ beeinflussen. Die Lieder über den Armenischen Völkermord, die von der Heavy Metal-Band System of a Down geschrieben und aufgeführt wurden, dienen dem Autor als ein Beispiel, das ein kritisches Überdenken einiger Aspekte von Adornos Ästhetik fördern soll. In this paper I start with Adorno’s famous and provocative statement “To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric”, aimed at asking whether art was still possible in the age of genocides. Then, I take into examination Adorno’s concept of commitment in art – which is closely related to these questions - and the meaning itself of the notion of “Auschwitz” in Adorno’s philosophy. Analyzing what Adorno called “true” art (i.e. art provided with a relevant “truth content”) leads to take into consideration what he understood vice-versa as false or untrue art, in particular mass culture and popular music. Adorno would have probably considered as a sort of blasphemy or heresy the idea itself to write and perform pop-rock songs about such subjects as genocide, but I argue that his views rely on some prejudices that negatively condition his philosophy of art and especially of music. The songs on the Armenian genocide written and performed by the heavy metal band System of a Down serve here as a profitable example that may be of help to foster a critical rethinking of some aspects of Adorno’s aesthetics.
