Full textOur work reflects upon the affinity between a figure of speech – the paradox – and the moral discourse, as it emerges and evolves from Montaigne to La Bruyère. We study the appropriation of a linguistic form and its revaluation as a stylistic trait. The comparative examination of the theoretical descriptions of the paradox, and their application to our corpus examples reveal the gradualness of the figure, and the variety of its discursive actualizations. By promoting a global, continuist and contextualized approach to the paradox, we stress out its functionality as well as its propensity to shape the reflection and the writing of the classical moralists
Chaufour, Marie. Thesis, Dijon, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012DIJOL038.
Full textThis dissertation is about the emblematical expression in the work of Jean Baudoin. At first Marguerite de Valois’s lecturer, he was sent to England by Marie de Médicis in order to translate L’Arcadie de la Comtesse de Pembroke, in 1624. Baudoin belonged to the House of the Cardinal de Richelieu and was one of chancelier Séguier’s protégés. As soon as 1634, hejoined the first members of the Académie française and took part in the writing of its statutes. Eighty six pieces of work are attributed to this prolific author and translator, most of which are translations significant of the orientation he gave to his work: the “Discours politiques” on Tacite’s work by Scipio Ammirato (1618), La Sagesse Mystérieuse des Anciens by Francis Bacon (1619), Mythologie by Natale Conti (1627) or Monita et Exempla politica by Justus Lipsus (1606 & 1650). The iconographical tradition is paramount in Jean Baudoin’s work, as well as the emblematical expression. The Recueil d’Emblemes divers, first published in Paris in 1638-1639 is the focus of the present dissertation. This collection of emblems was designed by Jean Baudoin, but he was largely influenced in its writing by previous translations. Two other pieces of work translated by Baudoin are essential to the thorough study of the Recueil d’Emblemes divers: the adaptation of Cesare Ripa’s Iconologia (First part 1636-1637, First and second part 1644) and the translation of Esope Phrygien’s Fables in 1631. The present work will first focus on how Baudoin constantly put himself and his work at the service of the reinforcement and affirmation of the French monarchy and of the moral edification of the reader. Then, we will study the connections between these three major works which enable to understand the importance of emblematical expression in Jean Baudoin. To do so, three main aspects will be studied: the renewal of the emblematical form/ genre, the creation of an allegorical vocabulary whose aim was the codification of the representation of power and monarchy, and a study of engraving, of it functioning in the text and of its production processes

The study is conducted according to a discourse analytical method with emphasis on textual analysis. The texts chosen for analysis were written during the 1980s and 1990s by art historians who advocate different standpoints.
Riocreux, Ingrid. Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040154.
Full textBased on quantitative data, this study shows how essential negation is in the understanding of moralistique as a literary genre that can be identified as such through precise formal elements. I examine many aspects of negation, including the questions of scope, internal and external negations, restricted negation, forclusion, implicit negation, prefixal and lexematic negation and polarity scales. Not only is negation a linguistic scheme (involving various morpho-syntactic as well as lexical patterns) but it also works as a stylistic device which the moralists make a constant and specific use of. Whereas it is commonly held that negation is pragmatically ambiguous, I argue that, in focusing on the moralist as a spectator of society, the critiques have implicitly considered negation to be mostly descriptive. While correct, this interpretation should be qualified. The main aspect of the moralists’ negation rests in its polemical power. The moralists intend to rectify a biased use of words resulting from a false conception of moral values. Therefore, these writers do not say what things are as much as what they are not. From Pascal’s apophatic views, through La Rochefoucauld’s negative anthropology and Vauvenargues’ refusal of artificial morality, to Chamfort’s prenihilistic philosophy, negation appears as a new way to get a better understanding of the evolution of moralistique

Full textBy having recourse to La Bruyère’s Characters, this work aims at reassessing a question that has been let aside by scholarly studies dedicated to « the philosophy as a way of life ». This question deals with the new relation between speech and action which is believed to have occurred in the 16th-17th centuries in the West. Through different hypotheses, we have chosen to examine the role played by the Machiavellian type of speech, or the logic of the domination. Being at the same time a way to access knowledge, a mode of self-constitution and a relationship to politeia, this logic is the place where the Modern knowledge gradually falls within and also turns us away from an access to La Bruyère’s text that can release its potential of ethical reformation – its psychagogy. In order to gain access to this potential, we have in turns to distance ourselves from the discursive logic of domination and to renew with this other relation to language, to oneself and to politeia that this logic constantly brings into disrepute, in other words to this Socrastic relation to be found in the philosophical production of the Antiquity to which the Characters refer to

Full textIn this thesis, I intend to offer a new vision of Ivan Goncharov’s works (1812-1891), major Russian novelist of the XIXth century and author of the famous novel Oblomov. I analyse all the works of the novelist : A Common Story (1847), Oblomov (1859), the Frigate Pallas, the Ravine (1869) and some of his less known short stories. I try to show how one could consider Goncharov as a moralist. My thesis is organized around three major themes. Firstly, I address the fundamental role of the comic elements in Goncharov’s literary production as I focus my attention on the strong intertextuality between Goncharov and other major authors of the XIXth century, such as Pushkin or Gogol. My second part is dedicated to the question of food and the body in Goncharov’s creation. I ponder over the symbolic representation of meals and cooking throughout his works. I also discuss the construction of bodies in his literary production, and more specifically in his travel writing. Finally, I examine Goncharov as a « painter » of the Russian society as I study his rich diversity of portraits of women, his considerations on marriage and his strong criticism of human passions, a fundamental argument of my thesis which stands perfectly in line with this vision of Goncharov as a moralist

Full textMy thesis relates to Pierre Nicole’s moral writings (1625-1695). He was a member of the port-royal group and wrote many controversial works. He also left the “Essais de morale” which were widely read till the French Revolution. Against the advances of molinism and secular ethics, Nicole is concentrated on reasserting the basic principles of augustinism in theology and morals. My work studies the nature and the implications of this reassessment of traditional augustinism. Its purpose is to show how Nicole expresses the concerns of Christian consciousness in a period which was not only Augustinian but also Cartesian and whose main concern was man. The age-old legacy of Augustinian thought is altered both by Cartesian rationalism and by an approach which frees itself from theocentrism and gives priority to the human point of view. Nicole is more concerned by the consequences of dogmas for the daily life than by dogmas for the own sake: he plays an important part in the progress of Christian apologetics towards morals in the second half of the seventeenth century. Moreover, the practical concern of the moralist, who is willing to exercise an influence upon behaviors, makes him an accomplished practitioner of the form in his writings because their audience depends on it. In order to define the specificity of Nicole’s work it is also necessary to situate it in relation to the forms of the seventeenth century moral writings. My work, being at the point where the history of ideas and the history of forms converge, is strengthened by the conviction that one cannot be apprehended without the other

Full textGatti, Laura. Paris 3, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA030081.
Full textDuring the period 1908-1916, the "moralists" of "La Voce" maintain, contrary to the aesthetics of Croce at that moment prevailing in Italy, the organic relationship between art and moral, form and contents, and the superiority of the critical notion of "grandeur" to that of "beauty". Nevertheless, Slapter, Boine and Jahier write texts that evidence their dissolved and fragmentary style. Through the study of the "construction" process of the texts, the thesis aims to define the graphical, structural and narrative properties which distinguish the fragmentary writing in Il mio Carso, Frantumi, Ragazzo and Con me e con gli alpini. By following a perspective of genetic criticism and textual analysis, the thesis studies all the different phases in the realisation of the works, i. E. Sketches, outlines, rough copies, final copies, printed versions and published texts. The analysis shows that on one hand these texts are what "remains" of the breaking-up of the discourse categories and the disintegration of the literary genders, and on the other hand that these still contain - on a formal as well as on a thematic level - traces of an aspiration for unity and totality. The poetics of the fragment in the "moralists" is the expression of the irremediable fracture that characterises the beginning of the twentieth century : the awareness of incompleteness as the only possible image of totality

Full textThis study deals with the religious, ethical and political aspects of the work of abraham a sancta clara, a preacher in vienna under leopold i. His religious teaching maintains the apologetic tradition of the counter-reformation, favouring the practice of marian devotion, and the cult of saints. However one also detects a willingness to diffuse the themes of the "pietas austriaca", with clear political implications. His moral conceptions are influenced by the tradition of contempt for the world. He denounces the faults of his contemporaries, but his observations largely reinforce commonplaces. Simultaneously, he presents a social ethic. By putting society in agreement with sacred order, he extols respect for the principles of the division of tasks and hierarchy. His conception of social relations is soteriological. Under the influence of neo-stoicism, he glorifies the martyr, the ideal image of the christian. A political dimension is inherent in his preaching. A patriot, he exalts the virtues of the germans and is on guard against foreign influences. He calls for the fight against the turks. As a propagandist, he praises the austrian dynasty, comparing Leopold i to Saint Leopold, and he designates austria the chosen nation of the new alliance

Full textThis PhD dissertation seeks to put in situation three moralists: on the one hand, Marie Linage and François de la Rochefoucauld, both living in the French 17th century and, on the other hand, Nicolás Gómez Dávila, a Colombian author of the 20th century. Why are they our contemporaries, in spite of the temporal and geographical distances? Initially, because of a tradition: the fragmentary writing. Then, because of an intention: to examine the human nature. We try to understand the specificity of the use of the fragment in each of them (questions without answer, maxims and scholiums, respectively), as well as the characteristics of their respective access to the question relating to man. In addition to essays, our dissertation comprises critical editions of the two French authors and a translated selection of the texts of the Colombian

Full textThe man from the classical moralist is the operative model which allows the knowledge of real men; the latter retain their obscurities, but the knowledge of the model is enough to enlighten moral behaviour. This knowledge proceeds from the study of the body, sexed, subject to ageing, on which personal existence is based; then it claims the exact notion of the part of the reason, that cannot be played but in healthy body, to the service of the heart intended to like order, but which may be disturbed by the force of unmastered passions. Passions are not vicious, but sin has thrown them into disorder; their original excellency is revealed when, ordered again to good, they become as many virtues. The accommodation is the means for man to recover harmony with himself, with his surroundings and with his condition, a reordering which makes him a true hero. So men cannot be achieved but within political society, this good reality without other finality than this achievement. The king, the true exemplary wiseman, god's lieutenant, is the firmest warrant of this finality. In spite of its failings, court shapes an harmonious microcosm, it's the glass case of the virtuous seeming. There, nobility and dignity must nature be natural, that's to say the gifts must be something of their own. That's why war, the terrific result of sin, must be an occasion af moral reconquest, of a return to order; things are quite similar for justice, an harmonic and royal one. La bruyere didn't say anything new about it, but he has worded it with quite a new artistic exactigness, along with an astonished, discomforted attitude

The present dissertation exposes the thought of Gilles Lipovetsky by examining specifically his book The post-moralistic society, in which the author treats in detail the ethical issue in contemporaneity. Under the French philosophical tradition scope, Lipovetsky proposes a study of more specific social phenomenons, by having as central object the hypermodern society. In this society determined by consumption, the ethics puts itself under new parameters. In the book mentioned above, the author is dedicated to understanding the paradoxes that circulate the discussions around the ethical issue, he notes that an ethics of post-obligation, whose purposes is the full satisfaction of the subjective desires of individuals in the most variety of actions, today determines the social relations of individuals in the social spheres. The author's theory concerning to the ethics of post-obligation brings significant elements for a better understanding of the religious issue, especially in its ethical dimension. The contributions of the author pointed to the emergence of a secularized religion to gravitate in the given social setting, whose characteristics are exposed in this dissertation. By opposing the considerations of Lipovetsky with the theories of other authors, it is possible to realize the existence of convergent and divergent points in the ethical proposals that they present. Lipovetsky's analysis shows itself pertinent to the discussion concerning to the possibility of a global ethics, common to all peoples

Full textMy aim was to study how the works of vauvenargues, (luc de clapiers, marquis de. . . 1715-1747) were received from 1746 (first edition of "l'introduction a la connaissance de l'esprit humain" to 1947 (bicentenary of his death). I have chosen to explain the facts in a chronological order. This study is made up of five chapters : 1. The philosophers' friend (1746-1789) - 2. Vauvenargues and the romantic criticism - 3. Vauvenargues' works from 1870 to 1920 - 4. Vauvenargues during the interwar years (1920-1939) - 5. Vauvenargues' works from 1939 to 1947. Considered as a minor writer int the french literature, vauvenargues was nevertheless the subject of several articles in which the commentary on his works and his biography were very often mixed up. Thus a "legende de vauvenargues" was born, which only came to an end soon after the second world war

Full textThe idea behind the work “Prescribing & writing: questioning the portrait of the poet as a moralist (Michaux, Char, Jabès & Jaccottet)” came from the observation of a misleading but incredibly frequent use of the term “moralist” in the 20th Century literary criticism, specially when applied to describe poets. The misuse of the term “moralist” turned out to be the consequence of its impressionist and versatile definition in the field of the 20th Century studies. Referring to a 20th century writer as a moralist implies, without anachronism intended, that there is some sort of continuity of this type of writing from the Grand Siècle to modern times. In addition, the very artificial link we could indeed try to establish between the two poetics, through the hypothesis of a trans-secular moralist poetics, seems indeed to leave aside a whole other aspect of our poets’ work. If the elements of an ethic we may find in their work are undeniable, the metapoetic reflection is just as important, if not more. The hypothesis of these poets as moralists do not enable the critics to read together the ethic and the poetics which cannot be dissociated, because they are one. The common denominator of our four poets is their incredible ability to create an “art poétique who is also an “art de vivre” and conversely. Michaux, Char, Jabès and Jaccottet shape an ethic which is a poetics and a poetics which is an ethic, so that the relationship to the reader they program also corresponds with the relationship to the other, inside the human community. Don’t these corresponding shapes of the ethic and the poetics evoke another sapiential and literary model than the seventeenth century moralists?

He ties general interest to the peoples' history, and founds all gouverments on the love of power's grounds, denying the existence of innate moral sentiments. His opposition against Rousseau's assumptions then reinforces his utilitarism. Altthough subjects like convention, laws and public are present in his political philosophy, he does not take into consideration obligation and liberty, the central themes of contractual theory. In this study, we expose the controversy focusing on the difficulties of both theories' elaboration

Full textThe present study addresses the multifaceted relationships between Balzac and the French literary 17th century. It consists of three parts: first, an analysis of Balzac’s own memorial selection of 17th-century political and literary events, followed by a detailed exploration of the variety of modes of attendance, practices and functions assumed by the “Grand Siècle” in La Comédie humaine, and finally of an evaluation of the range and consequences of the development of moralist-type thinking within prose narrative fiction. First, this research work allows for a renewed questioning of some foundations of Balzacian poetics. Secondly, the different methods of reception of the 17th century in the novel cycle built by Balzac between 1829 and 1850 highlight new reading circulations of La Comédie humaine by means of specific network-type textual devices. And finally, this study shows the permanence of problems linked with the development of the genre of the novel from the 17th to the 19th century. Hence, it invites to a revision of some deep-rooted prejudice of literary history, as much about Balzac than against the “classical Grand Siècle”

The object of this study is the question of the validity of the right by asking that the law is effectively. This is an ontological question. Only through a reflection on the validity of the right you can get a definition that has a positive content. The right is a matter of supply and not merit. The method used was the description, analysis and comparison of arguments between jusmoralistas theories and positivist theories that make up the theoretical foundation used. The approach of legal positivism in Brazil is deficient, made caricatured, without reference to seminal works and world discussed. In order to alleviate this deficit, this research seeks to clarify the theoretical controversy between legal positivism strictly sensu and the jusmoralismo. In addition, keeping the essential difference between legal philosophy and legal theory, this research aims to expand the contents of strictly sensu positivist theory. The thesis presents as a contribution to updating and contextualizing the legal strictly sensu positivism with normative positivism.
