Abstract:

Abstract:
The utopia is an ethic, the ethic is an utopia. The foundation of the morality is bound up with utopia. That is clear in the biblical tradition. Firstly the christian personalism. The morality is to be found in the response to the other person, or to the call of christ who integrate all of others. Here, the system of values founded on the universal principle is not possible. That is the prime moment of the life previous to the identity of the transcendental "for me", the anarchical moment far from any arche : l'u-topia (u-topos). Then, the tradition of the damythologization. The demythologization is the descralizeation on the nature and the history. Neither arche, nor telos, god invite us to the new world. Neither jew, nor greek, the chistian identity destroies the sacral and ontological identity ; she goes against superstitions of the place. It is here that the man is the condition of god. The hope of the man is the humain. To this spirit of demuthologization joint the technique. Beyond the soteriological horzon, the technique humanize the man because of the eschatological conjunction of "otherly than to be" (novum) and the eschatic referent (eschaton)

Grigoletto, Simone. "Only Through Moral Complexity: The Case of Supererogation." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3425231.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research work will focus on two morally relevant issues: the nature of the experience of a moral agents and a possible account of the concept of supererogation. Even if, at a preliminary stage, these two subjects look to be unrelated, it will become clear how they both are expressions of the complexity typical of the moral domain. I will endorse, as a starting point, the approach of moral phenomenology as defined by Maurice Mandelbaum. A phenomenological study is then intended as the analysis of what it is like to perform a given act from the perspective of the first-person. Accordingly, the experience of the moral agent appears to be manifold and heterogeneous. On a normative level, the best moral account that allows the management and the comprehension of such complexity seems to be moral pluralism. In particular, I will distinguish between two sorts of pluralism: methodological pluralism (about the different ways of moral reasoning) and axiological pluralism (about the different values that we take to have ultimate relevance). These denominations represent two ways of understanding morality in virtue of its complexity. As such, the approach of moral complexity relies on the acknowledgment of the manifold structure of morality. In this regard, I will consider the account offered by Charles Larmore in his Patterns of Moral Complexity. His admission of different and equally valid moral principles does not only explain something essential about our moral experience, but it will also become particularly helpful as I will try to apply his theory to the justification of supererogatory acts. Supererogation, as I will highlight, is a moral concept that relies on the existence of the many levels of morality and on the many possible achievements of the good. In this way, a clear distinction between the Right and the Good will provide the theoretical space for this category of acts. I will define this as the need of complexity, that is, the need of a multilevel theoretical structure that resembles the distinction between precepts and concepts that gave birth to the concept in the Christian tradition. I will try to show how the loss of moral complexity is the first responsible of the theoretical struggles that the major monist theories (in particular Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics) face when confronted with the justification of supererogatory acts. These theoretical approaches usually tend to be anti-supererogationists for a clear reason. When the level of the Right and the level of the Good merge into the same category there is no easy way to give an account of morally good acts that go beyond the call of duty. I believe that the endorsement of a pluralist system will solve the so-called problem of supererogation by reestablishing a clear distinction between the two faces of morality: the deontic and the evaluative. This is why, in the final chapter, I will introduce the Multiple Sources Dynamics as possible explanation, on a normative level, of how supererogatory acts can be performed. A system that provides multiple sources of the good has the tools to explain the establishment of our moral obligations and, at the same time, it can explain how we are able to see and foster some other good that lies beyond the level of requirements. In the present work, moral pluralism will be taken to be a sort of inference to best explanation of different morally relevant issues. This claim will be warranted by highlighting how moral pluralism can explain why our moral experience is so essentially complex (to the point of facing true moral dilemmas) and by showing how it can provide a satisfactory account of the concept supererogation. If these two subjects (which will be considered, at this point, directly related) are proved to hold true, the endorsement of a pluralist system will be considered the preferable option over the other normative systems.

Abstract:
This thesis's subject is the setting up of philosophy workshops aimed at inmates serving some time in jail. Our educational project allows them to learn and exchange on philosophical topics related to moral dilemmas. In prison, the teacher's main role is to prepare the inmates for their release and teach them how to understand better the world in which they live. Our research founds its framework for this purpose. The issue raised in this particular work is «To what extent can the use of discussions on moral dilemmas between inmates take a part in their moral development and/or behaviour ?». Our first hypothesis deals with the mobilisation of the rational dimension in their own judgement, in order to give them the opportunity to develop and increase their previous state of moral behaviour. The second hypothesis takes into account the emotional and affective dimension as regard the wording of moral judgements, as it might alter the rational approaches. On the methodological aspect, we focus on the qualitative side that is to say on the content analysis. Starting from the transcript of the discussions on moral dilemmas, we proceed to the coding of the units of meaning of the verbatim, in connection with the values guiding the theory of the stages of moral development of Kohlberg. Then, we apply the content analysis method to reach the sharp understanding of the learners' arguments. At last, from the whole discussions, we grasp the level of the prisoners' moral development and draw their profile of moral educability. This reflexive work on the dilemma aims at the subject's moral educability, based on the premise of a still possible educability. The outcomes of this research, by assessing the potential of the moral educability of the detainees, could alter a decision making on the judicial level. Our research also shows that some arguments can't be related to Kohlberg's grid. Indeed, the theory of moral development levels does not take into account the presence of family values, idealized for detained people. We therefore postulate the existence of a new stage of moral development, of a postconventional level, which could be called "stage of unconditional respect for family values". It would have, as a guiding principle, the absolute preservation of one's family members

Abstract:
In this thesis, our general aim is to describe the general organization of moral cognition, i. E. The set of psychological mechanisms involved in the formation of moral judgments. More precisely, we claim that, to achieve a full understanding of our moral psychology, we need to distinguish between three different kinds of moral judgments: moral judgments about what happens (good or bad), moral judgments about agents' dispositions (praiseworthy or blameworthy) and judgments about agents' responsibility for a given event. For each kind of moral judgment, we describe the underlying mechanism, and the way it interacts with the others. Finally, we draw some conclusions for moral psychology and philosophy

This research establishes methodology to measure morale as a function of productivity. Relationships between morale, ability, training, and experience are linked to productivity so that managers can incentivize employee productivity more precisely. The data from this survey are effective at the individual level, but are more useful on an aggregate scale, using a theoretical regression. The survey and regression are theoretical, and provide managers valuable information about employees’ productivity and factors that affect it over time. Follow-on research should test the survey’s viability, adjust data collection procedures and the regression equation, and examine the cost-benefit analysis of modeling morale.

Abstract:
To study Baudelaire’s morals is to represent the personal morals of Baudelaire through his sentiments, his poetic and "philosophic" ideas. Baudelaire possesses an indomitable volition to live in the ideal universe. "The taste for the infinity", the spontaneous sentiment for the beauty push him to surmount the adverse circumstances of his life; this instinct of "pass over" contain a germ which can be transformed into the light, a factor of the moral beauty. In short, the substance of Baudelaire’s life is translated by the duty that the exceptional spirit in the quotidian world must perform, in other words, by the devotion for the humanity, namely, by the art. The principal idea of Baudelaire' morals, which is expressed by the charity, by the brotherliness, is neither preachified, nor pedantic by the didactic tone, but "the inspired morals which is imbibed, invisible, in the poetic material"

Abstract:
In the Renaissance, short fiction is defined by fictional narratives inspired from reality and claiming to be truthful. These are often narratives staging different social groups and representing all human types. In my analysis of a number of collected sixteenth-century novellas, I noted that great emphasis was laid on social structures (couple, family, social group, location) that represent the basic framework of communal life. However, these works, which at first sight seem pregnant with ideological implications, often stage characters that, for various reasons and at different levels, are made to choose particular paths. Thus, all the debates and polemics raised in these narratives relate to two kinds of morality, one individual and the other communal. The objective of this study is therefore to look into the different representations, and determine the interference, of these two moralities in the novella genre. Scrutiny of the different social, religious, political and cultural codes enabled me to establish the existence of this interference and its impact on the fabric of literary texts. In depicting life in sixteenth-century France, the story-tellers developed a new way of viewing men in their relation to society and the world. As a result, they were able to invent a new morality, thus changing the very perception of the individual

Abstract:
The goals of sustainable manufacturing, as articulated by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), are to reduce the intensity of material use, energy consumption, emissions and unwanted by-products - while maintaining or improving the value of products to society and to organizations. Benefits that can be achieved through this practice include improved working conditions, public image, staff morale, customer loyalty, brand value, profits, sales turnover, product performance, reduction in waste generation and staying ahead of regulatory concerns. Achieving such goals begins early in the product design phase with consideration toward materials used and processes invoked in manufacturing. Ultimately, a full sustainability assessment must include the product's End-of-life (EOL) impact, factoring environmental impacts of landfill and recycling emissions. This paper focuses on using an End-Of-Life impact assessment for a set of materials and processes commonly used in the aerospace industry. Available data and best practices are used to forecast the final EOL impact of an aerospace product for a given set of materials and processes. The approach is able to quantify costs incurred to advance manufacturing processes and can be used to inform top management on sustainability decisions. The approach could be extended to assess the complete aircraft, including its Beginning of Life.
