Abstract:
Descartes’s exposition of his search for truth in the Discourse on the Method draws on Montaigne’s self-presentation in the Essays as well as on the recurrent metaphors of the “Apology for Raymond Sebond.” In his construction of reliable knowledge he is assisted by Montaigne’s demolition of existing knowledge-structures. Though claiming to achieve certainty on issues Montaigne proclaims philosophically doubtful (such as the existence of God and the nature of the soul), he emphasizes God’s transcendence of human reason; nor does his dualism deny the embodied nature of human experience, on which Montaigne insists. But, contrary to Montaigne, Descartes insists on the gulf between humans and animals.

Abstract:
In 1580, Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) published a book unique in its title and in its content: Essays. A literary genre was born. At first sight, the Essays resemble a patchwork of personal reflections, but they engage with questions that animate the human mind, and they tend toward a single goal: to live better in the present and to prepare for death. For this reason, Montaigne’s thought and writings have been a subject of enduring interest across disciplines. This Handbook brings together essays by prominent scholars, who examine Montaigne’s literary, philosophical, and political contributions and who assess his legacy and relevance today in a global perspective. The chapters of this Handbook offer a sweeping study of Montaigne across different disciplines and in a global perspective. One section covers the historical Montaigne, situating his thought in his own time and space, notably the Wars of Religion in France. The political, historical, and religious context of Montaigne’s Essays requires a rigorous presentation to inform the modern reader of the issues and problems that confronted Montaigne and his contemporaries in his own time. In addition to this contextual approach to Montaigne, the Handbook establishes a connection between Montaigne’s writings and issues and problems directly relevant to our modern times, that is to say, our age of global ideology. Montaigne’s considerations, or essays, offer a point of departure for the modern reader’s own assessments. The Essays analyze what can be broadly defined as human nature, the seemingly never-ending process by which the individual tries to impose opinions upon others through the production of laws, policies, or philosophies. Montaigne’s motto—“What do I know?”—is a simple question yet one of perennial significance. One could argue that reading Montaigne today teaches us that the angle by which we view our lives defines the world we see, or, as Montaigne wrote: “What matters is not merely that we see the thing, but how we see it.”

Abstract:
Montaigne’s informal and often provocative way of thinking and writing has had a longlasting influence in Europe. This article addresses the reception of Montaigne’s Essays from 1580 unto the present day, in France and beyond. The main topics are the French editions of the Essays, Montaigne’s French readers through the centuries – admirers as well as adversaries –, the numerous translations of the Essays in Europe and beyond, and their worldwide readership. Special attention is given to the country-specific imitations and interpretations, as exemplified by some famous Montaigne readers. Editors, translators, and other readers tend to create their own Montaigne according to their needs, norms, and values.

Abstract:
This article shows how Montaigne’s Essays can clarify the problem of historical periodization by demonstrating the differences between early modern, modern, and postmodern sensibilities. These terms have arisen in the wake of disputes over Jacob Burckhardt’s interpretation of the Renaissance, offering the appearance of a more value-free alternative to his period scheme. An examination of the Essays, however, reveals that these terms are not mere chronological markers but embody crucial, normative differences. In contrast to the modern sensibility that perceives selfhood as the product of historical and cultural context, Montaigne regarded it as reflected in, rather than shaped by, his context. This early modern tendency engendered in him a form of radical relativism akin to that of postmodernism, a form of relativism that appeals to twenty-first-century readers and that can provide a new orientation in a complex world.
