Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate an alternative mode of transportation for METU and the impacts of spatial transformations generated by the proposed system in an architectural context. This study embraces modern concepts of space-time in the practice of architectural design, and involves a sensitive consideration of the perception of space relative to position, speed and movement. In an urban context, the thesis unfolds spatial transformations affected by new movement technology. While the notions of movement and speed fundamentally shape the image of the contemporary city, METU campus will be reanalyzed within this framework.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this thesis is to assess the financial, technical and social feasibility of investing in modern Automated People Movers (APM) transportation systems, generally known as monorails, in METU campus which presents a unique opportunity to fulfill the modern-day transportation needs of METU campus. This study complements the Presidency Office&rsquo
s long term goal to integrate environmental, social and economic sustainability into the policies, practices and culture of the university and ultimately reduce the consumption of all resources on campus and traffic congestion and accidents. In this context, the consequent cost-benefit effects of the proposed monorail system on campus life were quantified in monetary expressions and the corresponding multi-criteria feasibility assessment including: Break-even Analysis, Cost Effectiveness Assessments and Cost Benefit Analysis have been done successfully. According to these analyses the overall capital cost of system is $46.5 million which covers the 24 months project construction period, and an additional annual operating and maintenance cost of $2 million will span the 30 year project life time. Three different scenarios were proposed for financing the project and relevant break-even points were determined for each of the scenarios. Eventually, it appears that based on the evaluations, constructing such a transit system in METU campus will be cost effective and will certainly enhance the transportation, and will contribute to the institutional improvements and environmental preservation schemes of METU campus.

Redwood, Benjamin Philip. "Analysis, design, optimisation and testing of a gyroscopically stabilized platform." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Mechanical Engineering, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9565.

Full text
Abstract:
Gyroscopic stabilization can be used to maintain an otherwise unstable body in an upright position. Devices equipped with gyroscopes can balance upon a small area or point without falling over when the gyroscopic stabilizing force is greater than a rotational force or moment from an out-of-balance load that causes the device to tip. A new concept for a gyroscopically stabilized platform has been proposed in the form of a schematic diagram. The proposed system comprises of four interconnected gyroscopes that react to the tipping of an inherently unstable external body. The purpose of this research is to evolve a design for, and establish the feasibility of building the proposed stable platform using available materials and technology. If feasible, the gyroscopically stabilized platform will be made at the most practical and economic size. Louis Brennan developed a 37 tonne monorail that was maintained in the upright position with two 3 tonne counter rotating gyroscopes. The Brennan monorail is analysed to better understand the behaviour of a similar coupled gyroscopic stabilization system. The reactions between the components that maintain the monorail in the stable position are studied and comparisons are made between the proposed stable platform and the Brennan system. A mathematical analysis of the proposed system is presented. The equations of motion for the system are derived using the Lagrangian Formalism. The characteristic equation of the system is then determined and from this a set of stability conditions imposed on the design of the physical parameters of the stable platform. The general solutions to the equations of motion are then derived. Expressions that model the behaviour of two of the variables that describe the motion of the stable platform are determined. A systematic approach is adopted for establishing a new concept for the proposed system. Testing of the initial stable platform prototype (Prototype A) showed the system did not behave as intended. The platform was optimised further and this resulted in a second prototype, Prototype B. Prototype B exhibiting the desired oscillatory motion about the vertical of the platform. Predictions made using the mathematical model are compared with empirical results. The mathematical model was found to be an accurate method for predicting the response of the stable platform.

One of the approaches of the term mobility lays upon the link between urban planning, transit and transportation, and the elements and technologies that facilitate the commuting of people and goods throughout the city. Lately, transportation and traffic have become in both, mid-sized and big cities, a barrier to urban and regional development, due to various antagonistic situations experienced when commuting. Management efforts are engendered by the government in an attempt to find solutions for the matter have proved ineffective so far. The city of Goiânia is a city-center hub of activities of a Metropolitan Area, a region with a population of an estimated 2,206,134 residents (IBGE, 2011), and 1,000,000 vehicles cruising its road system (DETRAN, 2001). The struggle for room in the lanes, among passenger cars, freight and passenger transport, is already noticeable during peak hours. The saturation level of the system undermines the effective public passenger transportation. In turn, the management of a Passenger Public-Transportation System that is effectively integrated has failed to reach satisfactory results, considering the organizational traits that have been put in action up to now. This paper proposes an analysis of the deployment of the monorail technology in the Integrated Passenger Public-Transportation in the metropolitan area of Goiânia, by means of a methodology of cost-benefit analysis, depicting a brief characterization of monorail technology, a database on the transport system and the definition of a basic layout of metro route in territorial space. As a product, the result of cost-benefit analysis proposes a basic model of monorail technology implementation in the Metropolitan Public Transport Network in Goiânia, noting advantages and disadvantages of such a model. Last, but not least, final considerations about the methodology and the proposed model will be discussed.

Abstract:
This research focuses on decision-making support methods to choice public urban transport modes and analyzes the operational and functional performances of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Monorail systems. A multicriteria decision aided model (MDAM) in complex scenarios is used in the analysis and has as input data the subjective preferences of stakeholders and the objective and subjective performances of the three modalities in relation to a set of five criteria and 22 subcriteria. This system covers the axes of energy efficiency, cost, economic and financial feasibility, travel quality and environmental impacts. Stakeholders selected with profiles of operator, neighbor, user, equipment and service provider and consultant in urban transport assign their preferences, scoring them on a numerical scale from 1 to 9. In order to apply the model in the region of the city of São Paulo, 138 opinions were collected through evaluation forms and interviews conducted in that region. Each of the three modes, once configured to meet the operational and functional requirements of the transport service defined by a common functional unit, has its performances against the same set of criteria and subcriteria scored on a numerical scale. A global index (GI), which defines the priority of each alternative, is obtained by aggregating the preferences and performances according to an additive function. The MDAM model was applied in a case study that has simulated the operation of the three transport modalities in the stretch between the stations Vila Prudente and São Mateus of the Line 15 of the São Paulo Metro, whose general requirements did define the functional unit of the case. Within the limits and assumptions defined for the case study, the calculated global indices indicated the first preference for the Monorail modal, followed, in sequence, by the LRT and BRT.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Lateral torsional buckling should be taken into account during the design of overhanging steel beams. One special type of overhanging beams is the crane trolley monorails. Lateral buckling of overhanging monorails under idealized loading and boundary conditions has been studied in the past using classical mathematical procedures. This thesis aims to present a detailed investigation of overhanging monorails using finite element analysis. Effects of different loading and boundary conditions were studied in detail. It was found out that the location of loading and supports on the cross section have significant effects on the buckling capacity. Beams having different warping and torsional properties were analyzed. The effects of cross section distortion on buckling capacity were investigated for beams with single and double overhangs. The reduction in capacity due to cross section distortion has been quantified. Based on the analysis results simple design recommendations were developed for lateral buckling of overhanging monorails and they are presented herein.

Abstract:
As Yancey (2003) has pointed out, the intentional character of racially integrated churches tends to lessen the social distance between Whites and minorities. The purpose of this study is to examine how racially hierarchy-attenuating and hierarchy-enhancing environments affect classism and sexism attitudes among congregations. The finding shows that multiracial churches promote H-A environment for class and race diversity, but not for gender equality. The class and race diversity is affected by organizational structure; on the other hand, gender equality is influenced by theologies. This study finds the answers to this discrepancy from the effect of biblical teachings on classist and sexist attitudes and the cumulative effect of structured domination of women.

Racial identity of mixed race individuals is important to understand because of the growing proportion of the population with parents from different racial groups. Having more than one racial heritage has a direct impact on how these children are seen by others as well as how they understand and encounter the world around them. Parents socialize their children in matters of race and discrimination that can impact their racial identity development, which is a component of their overall identity development. The aim of this study was explore how multiracial children are socialized and the impact of that socialization on racial identity formation from a heuristic perspective. Heuristic inquiry is a facet of phenomenology that seeks to understand the researcher’s experience of the phenomenon; therefore, I provided data on my experiences with raising a mixed-race child in a monoracial family. Two other families experiencing the same phenomenon were also interviewed. Themes related to racial profiling, parental perception of the mixed race child’s personality, skin tone, level of respect, and parenting were identified through the five-step analysis process recommended by Moustakas for heuristic inquiry, including immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. This study highlights relevant aspects in the lives of mixed-race children, how that impacts the way society views mixed-race individuals, and how those individuals encounter the world around them.

Wootton, NIKOLAUS. "GFRP-Reinforced Concrete Guideway Beams for Monorail Applications." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/8614.

Full text
Abstract:
Increased demand for reliable public transit is motivating new and innovative transportation solutions. Monorail trains are quickly being established as transportation solutions for dense urban areas, due to their unobtrusive infrastructure. To obtain maximum value from investments made, the infrastructure is required to last longer than typical reinforced concrete. This thesis will explore the use of glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars as reinforcement in concrete guideway beams as a means of avoiding the deterioration problems that plague steel-reinforced concrete. This thesis includes a two part investigation: a full-scale field application of a GFRP-reinforced concrete guideway beam (690 mm x 1,500 mm x 11,600 mm), compared to a typical steel-reinforced beam (both installed on a 1.86 km long monorail test track); and a laboratory study of a scaled-down version of the GFRP-reinforced beam to better predict behaviour beyond typical service load levels. A total of 450 test passes of a two-car monorail train were observed over the two instrumented beams on the track. These passes were performed at vehicle loads ranging from fully unloaded for the first testing phase, up to the maximum allowable design service load. At each stage of testing, vehicle speeds ranged from as low as 5 km/h to as high as 90 km/h, allowing for the dynamic behaviour of the guideway to be observed and quantified. Deflections, strains, and cracks were recorded and compared with code/guideline limitations as well as to numerical predictions to determine which design tools were most effective and could predict behaviour accurately. In the laboratory, the half-scale GFRP-reinforced beam was tested statically to failure, and the behaviour was compared to the same modelling tools used in the field study. Based on the testing performed, the GFRP-reinforced concrete beams performed satisfactorily and met all serviceability requirements, but did not perform as well as the steel-reinforced beam (as a result of the reduced stiffness of GFRP). The use of non-prestressed GFRP-reinforced beams should be limited to applications where spans are of comparable length to the field study. To maintain satisfactory performance, guideway spans significantly longer will need to continue to be design as prestressed beams.

AMHS(Automated Material Handling System) is widely used for transporting materials in fab. However, most of simulation model is not precise enough in speed and location calculation and not efficient. In this research, we proposed a discrete event based mono rail material transport simulation system for more realistic simulation in AMHS. The system includes vehicles and tracks in AMHS. However, stockers and production machines are not included. In this thesis, we use the custom motion frame to plan acceleration and deceleration for vehicles. With collision preventing algorithm, distance between vehicles are kept, and vehicle can prevent collision as a result. By using the motion frame planning technique, the discrete event is simulation system is reduced to New Delivery Request and Vehicle Exiting Track. With the reduced discrete event, the simulation system works more efficient. The animation event is also provided for animated simulation. User can verify simulation by watching process with animation. To make the track layout more realistic, 3-degree Bezier curves is used to simulate curved tracks in system .To fully simulate to collision prevention procedure, motion frame and junction are proposed. When multiple vehicle try to enter same junction, first come first served policy is used to prevent collision. Also, when multiple vehicles are moving on same track, distance should be kept to prevent collision. Since the machine and stocker is excluded in this model, New Delivery Request event is used to simulate delivery request generated by machine and stocker. Two custom track layouts are designed to find best number of vehicle. The performance index is also provided as the vehicle number changed.

Afterwards we will look at the design and production of a two-wheeled monorail gyrocar focusing on the frictional mechanism to achieve balance and stability and carry out experiments. Items to consider include: choice of the rotary engine, voltage, height of the car, width of frictional walls and walking stability test. Lastly we will summarize the stability of a design using a rotary engine of 60mm diameter, 3.7 Volts, a car body height of 50mm, and frictional walls of width 0.7~1mm. In the future, students can use this thesis as a reference to the production method used and carry out further improvement and find different methods to achieve the same results. Through the process of production, the goal of technical education can be achieved.

The overall objective of this research is to design a new hybrid rail switching system for the monorail system. There are many monorails in the world, such as Darling Harbour Monorail in Sydney, Sentosa Express in Singapore, and Tokyo Monorail in Japan. It is a scientific and technological symbol. However, the monorail system still needs great improvement on the switching system. While switching the track, some sections of the track have to move laterally, and some of them need to flip up-side-down. The monorail car has to slow down or stop before track switching completes. In general, it takes 1-2 minutes to switch. That means people have to wait for some time when it is switching. It is not convenient at all for people who are in a hurry. This research developed an innovative track switching system of the monorail to solve the problem. In the current design, the monorail system adopts on-board track changing wheels, which follow the guide rails to complete switching. It can reduce the track switching time extensively. We use SolidWorks to design the monorail car and track prototypes, and evaluate the feasibility of the design. We then built them using the 3D printer. When we performed the speed experiment, we found that the monorail prototype can complete switching with a speed of 0.25 m/s and without waiting, proving the feasibility of our design. The purpose of this thesis is to study the inductive power transfer technique for contactless power transfer monorail systems, and the main feature is the closed-type inductive coupler. In most monorail systems, the power pickups are based on an E shape, however it is not the best one. This thesis proposes a modified pickup which consists of one E core and one I core. The E core forms a closed shape with the I core, hence its coupling coefficient is high and can remove from the track unrestrictedly. The low reluctance feature of the proposed pickup is verified by simulation. Furthermore, an 8cm-length, 4.5cm-width, and 1.2cm-height pickup model is produced and tested. And at the primary subsystem, the frequency is adjusted by PLL. At the secondary subsystem, the buck converter outputs a stable 24V. According to the experimental result, the highest power transfer efficiency of the closed-type pickup is approximately 76%.

Wafer fabrication is a very expensive and promising industry. Recently, Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing industry is blooming, many wafer fabs are constructing or planned to construct. The competition is getting higher and higher. How to plan an effective wafer fab is an important issue, and it will affect the productivity. This research studies the facility layout of wafer fab with an bi-directional overhead monorail system ( OMS ) and develops a cost model which considers both quantitative and qualitative aspects. In the quantitative area, as tradition, this study considers the flow quantities between bays; in the qualitative area, it considers the process, gas piping, and cleanliness relationships between bays. Then, this study uses the method of simulated annealing and the theory of fuzzy set to find a near optimal solution with the minimal cost for the model. This solution corresponds to the best layout for the fab. This study uses a near-practical case as the test example, and we test for pure quantitative, pure qualitative, and integrated three cases. This research also compares the results with the cases with a single-directional OMS.
