Abstract:
Nuclear accidents have occurred at Japan’s fast-breeder reactor Monju and in Tokai Village etc., and incidents involving nuclear reactors damaged due to natural disasters such as earthquakes are anticipated. In this case, conditions such as leakage of radioactivity must be grasped as soon as possible without exposing anyone to radiation. The Monju accident occurred near Tsuruga City in Fukui Prefecture in December 1995. Liquid sodium used as coolant leaked and a fire broke out. The Tokai Village incident occurred at a uranium processing plant in Tokai Village, Naka County, Ibaraki Prefecture, in September 1999. In this case, a uranium solution went critical and two subcontracted employees workers died of radiation exposure.

The present study introduces the subject “Education and maroon community: EJA’s relationship with customs and African traditions in the maroon Communities África and Laranjituba in Moju/PA”, conducted in the Caeté’s Maroon Territory. Antonio Olinto’s work, Alma da África trilogy, a literary text that introduces an Africa with its customs and traditions, political, human and cultural issues since the independence of the ancient colonies grounds the customs and African traditions. The main goal is to research if the EJA’s educative process considers the customs and African traditions of Larajituba and África communities. EJA’s study starts during the process of industrialization and concentration at downtown, nearly 30’s, when the Brazilian system of education gets finally consolided. The first stage of the research was realized with a great bibliographical review, by examining written texts about the black people in Pará and EJA searching out about if the educative process really considers those customs and African traditions. The second stage adopted a Collaborative Research, developed in reunions with 28 participants, among teachers, students and parents, who acted in a mutual supportive, with shared goals and agreed by the group involved. The study concluded that in spite of the effort in provide a curricular proposal for EJA, realized by the Moju’s department of education, with a specific methodology for those remaining maroons, there’s still such a lot of efforts so that the educational process in the Laranjituba e África maroon communities practice the specific methodology of the curricular proposal. The research brings a relevant contribution to the EJA’s guidelines of Moju’s county, as well as to the Enhancement and Specialization courses offered by IFPA training that develops in the county of Moju.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore and analyse factors that influence the low utilisation of natural family planning methods. A theoretical framework adapted from Betty Neuman's Systems Model was used to guide the study. Using Betty Neuman's Systems Model the person or client's behaviour influenced by the continuous interaction with the environment. The factors investigated were the women's personal characteristics, age, occupation, marital status and education, cultural influences which included the relationship between the husband and wife and the religious belief of the women. The last factor investigated was the influence of the info1111ation practices and family planning methods by the health personnel. A descriptive survey design using a personal interview schedule and focus group discussion was used to collect data. The target population consisted of women of child bearing age (15-49 years) living in Mongu urban district, a western province of Zambia. One hundred women participated in the personal interview in their own homes. Twenty women of the same group participated in two focus group discussions conducted at two health centres. Data were analysed and presented using frequency distribution statistics, cross tabulation and content analysis of main themes for open ended questions in categories. The major findings were that age, marital status, occupation, the husband at1d the practices of health performed had either facilitative or disruptive effects on whether the women used natural family planning methods. For example, the results strongly demonstrated that older women had mere knowledge of, and used natural family planning more than younger women. Employed women had more knowledge of, and used natural family planning more than the housewives; those at school and at home. Some women did not use natural family planning because their husbands were not willing. Other women did not use natural family planning because it was not encouraged by the health personnel. Education had very little influence on use of natural family planning methods in this study, compared to previous research studies which had indicated that women with higher education used family planning methods more than those less educated. Although the results could not be generalised due to the convenience sample used, they supported some of the factors identified in previous research studies. A number of implications for nursing practice were outlined and nurses need to be trained in natural family planning in order to increase the number of health professionals who can teach natural family planning methods. The husbands need to be involved in the issues of natural family planning

Abstract:
Under-representation of female teachers in management positions in high schools This mini-dissertation is a study of under-representation of female teachers in management positions in high schools in Bophuthatswana. The statement of the research problem and the aims and methods of research are discussed in chapter 1 . This includes a discussion of the population used for the empirical research and an outline of the chapter division. In chapter 2, terms such as under-representation and management positions are defined. Literature purports that female teachers are under-represented because they do not apply for promotion posts in high schools. Internal factors that are seen as barriers for female teachers to apply for promotion were examined in this chapter. These factors include, among others, lack of self-confidence, lower self-image, fear of success, lack of aspiration and the cinderella syndrome. The role played by traditional and stereotyped beliefs in female teachers' withdrawal from management activities was also considered. Chapter 3 is devoted to a discussion of external factors that are seen to inhibit female teachers from applying for promotion posts. These factors include filtering techniques, tokenism and marginality, mentoring and role modelling, networking, sponsoring and family constraints. Empirical research conducted is reported in chapter 4. The discussion includes the construction of a questionnaire, the population analysis and the interpretation of the data. Finally, conclusions were drawn with regard to literature, as well as empirical research findings. A number of recommendations are made with regard to the research findings.

The objective of the research was to identify areas where there is a greater risk of forest fire disaster in Moju municipality of Pará. The evidence that the use of fire in its territory, the consequences of which may have a significant negative impact on the municipality's cattle ranching, are the support for the choice of location. In this sense, through bibliographic research, documentary, interviews and analyzes, three main maps were constructed. The first was the Forest Fire Hazard Map, in which it was verified which areas would be most likely to suffer from forest fires. The second was the Socioeconomic Assessment Map, whose purpose was to measure the possible demographic, social, cultural, and economic impacts resulting from forest fires in the municipality. The last one was the Forest Fire Disaster Risk Map, which is the product of an algebra of the first two maps. Thus, in the actions of environmental risk management for the municipality, the mapping done will help in the decision making by the managers. Also, the way the mapping was done provides the basis for the formation of a manual that can be used by the Pará Military Fire Brigade in other municipalities.

Abstract:
The in service inspection (ISI) of MONJU fast breeder reactor vessel is performed in a severe environment at elevated temperature (about 200 °C ) and high-level radiation field (about 10Sv/h). Liquid sodium is used as the coolant of MONJU reactor. A horizontally polarized shear (SH) wave electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is used to perform the volumetric inspection of the MONJU reactor vessel. In this paper, the magnetic flux density and the sound pressure distributions for the SH wave EMAT with a so-called Halbach magnet structure are analyzed from room temperature up to 240°C. The magnetic flux density and the sound pressure of the EMAT decrease with the increase of temperature. At 200°C, the relative reduction of the peak magnetic flux density and the relative thermal demagnetization at liftoff distance 0.5mm are less than 9% and 2%, respectively. This thermal demagnetization can be understood by analyzing the distribution of the permeance coefficient. As a result, the Halbach magnet structure can be used at elevated temperatures without large performance reductions as compared to its performance at room temperature. The Halbach EMAT will demonstrate good performance not only at room temperature but also at high temperature up to 240°C. This new structure EMAT is suitable for MONJU reactor vessel ISI.

Abstract:
CERES is plant system analysis code for LMRs (liquid metal cooled reactors) developed by the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI). To verify the CERES code, analyses were performed by using the result of the plant trip test of the prototype FBR (fast breeder reactor) “MONJU” at 40% rated power. The verification work was performed as a joint research of CRIEPI and JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency). Following three verification analyses were performed mainly. (I) Analysis concerning the primary/ secondary/auxiliary cooling system (the plenum in the reactor vessel (R/V) was modeled in R-Z 2-dimension). (II) Analysis concerning the thermal-hydraulic characteristics in the plenum of R/V (the plenum was modeled in 3-dimension). (III) Analysis concerning the flow characteristics inside the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) (the plenum in the IHX was modeled in 3-dimension). Analytical results by the CERES code showed good agreement with the results of the test of the “MONJU”. Fundamental abilities of the CERES as a plant dynamics calculation code had been verified through these analyses. Additionally, some characteristic flows in plena of “MONJU” became clear by these analyses.

Abstract:
Safety of the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor ‘MONJU’ was confirmed at the Installation Permission stage by a series of plant behavior analyses which covered anticipated accidents hypothesizing conservative conditions for various safety reviews. In order to quantify the conservativeness of these analytical conditions, the same series of accidents have been simulated based on actual plant performance data measured during the commissioning tests, to predict more realistic plant accident behaviors. The new analytical results show that the safety margin of the maximum mid-wall temperature of fuel-pin clad increases about 100°C compared to the formerly derived value from the safety review. The main reason of this difference is that the safety review assumes the reactivity worth of the control rods in case of plant trips is at the minimum level required for a reactor shutdown. This recent revised margin has been evaluated to be equivalent to about 10% of the potential increase of plant thermal output.

Abstract:
This paper reports a part of realistic safety margin analysis of Japanese prototype fast breeder reactor MONJU, based on actually measured plant characteristics during a commissioning operation under up to 40% electric power generation mode. In order to evaluate realistic integrity margins against design-phase evaluations and against the limit values, the thermal stresses of critical component parts after a typical thermal transient event, i.e., a manual reactor trip, were derived through serially combined thermal transient and structural analyses. The results of thermal transient and structure analysis confirmed that the evaluation values of the structural stresses at the reactor vessel outlet nozzle, at the upper tube sheet of the intermediate heat exchanger, and at the evaporator feed water inlet tube sheet are well within the design evaluation values.

Abstract:
A numerical analysis of the thermal stratification in the upper plenum of the MONJU fast breeder reactor was performed. Calculations were performed for a 1/6 simplified model of the MONJU reactor using the commercial code, CFX-13. To better resolve the geometrically complex upper core structure of the MONJU reactor, the porous media approach was adopted for the simulation. First, a steady state solution was obtained, and the transient solutions were then obtained for the turbine trip test conducted in December 1995. The time dependent inlet conditions for the mass flow rate and temperature were provided by JAEA. Good agreement with the experimental data was observed for the steady state solution. The numerical solution of the transient analysis shows the formation of thermal stratification within the upper plenum of the reactor vessel during the turbine trip test. The temporal variations of temperature were predicted accurately by the present method in the initial rapid coastdown period (∼300 seconds). However, the transient numerical solutions show a faster thermal mixing than that observed in the experiment after the initial coastdown period. A near homogenization of the temperature field in the upper plenum is predicted after about 900 seconds, which is a much shorter-term thermal stratification than the experimental data indicates.

Abstract:
The present paper describes and clarifies the main difficulties arising in the 3D numerical simulations using finite element method of the remote field eddy current effect in magnetic steam generator tubes. The 2D axisymmetric and full 3D simulations are compared with experimental results from outer discontinuities in Monju fast breeder reactor steam generator tubes. Very good agreements were obtained between measurements and 2D simulations. The influences of several parameters are evaluated by 3D simulations: convergence error of the iterative matrix solutions, pattern of the mesh discretization, the boundary limit and finite element interpolation order. The computational cost of the remote field 3D model in Monju steam generator tubes and the numerical aspects of the 3D simulations are discussed in detail in the paper.

Abstract:
Flow network models of the upper plenum of reactor vessel and the primary inlet plenum of intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) of MONJU were advanced and each model was validated by the measured data obtained in the previous system start-up tests (SSTs). Then the whole plant dynamics in a plant trip transient of MONJU were simulated by incorporating these flow network models. The natural circulation in the primary and secondary heat transport systems were also validated by these test results. From these validations, we concluded that the plant dynamics model incorporated the advanced models in Super-COPD code could simulate the whole plant dynamics in good accuracy both in the transients and natural circulation conditions and that it was applicable to predict the next SSTs.

Abstract:
For the prototype sodium-cooled fast reactor, MONJU, the mechanical energy and structural response under energetics caused by neutronic power excursion during Unprotected Loss of Flow accident (ULOF) were preliminarily analyzed. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the integrity of the reactor vessel against the mechanical load induced by the energetics. Conservative energy production was assumed in order to confirm the robustness of the safety design of MONJU. Mechanical energy was evaluated with the code in which mechanistic modelling of core expansion was implemented. The mechanical energy, which were obtained by analyzing the expanding behavior of core materials after energetics, were about one order of magnitude below the thermodynamic work potential calculated by assuming isentropic expansion of the fuel vapor to one atmosphere, which was often used as an indicator to express the severity of the energetics. Structural integrity was then evaluated with coupled fluid-structure dynamics code using the obtained mechanical energy. No or very small circumferential residual strain of the reactor vessel was evaluated in most analytical cases, and even in the most conservative energy production case, the residual strain was only 0.008 % so that the integrity of the reactor vessel is maintained. The result obtained in the present study shows that MONJU has enough robustness against the mechanical load under energetics.

Abstract:
Breeding bird surveys were initiated on George Washington Carver National Monument, Missouri, in 2008 to assess temporal changes in the species composition and abundance of birds on the park and to improve our understanding of relationships between breeding birds and their habitat and the effects of management actions, such as invasive plant species control and tree thinning, on bird populations. Birds were sampled using point counts with 70 variable circular plots located on a systematic grid of 100 x 100-m cells (originating from a random start point). All birds seen or heard on a plot during a 5-min sampling period were recorded. In the 13 years since initiating our breeding bird surveys on the park, birds were surveyed on as many of the 70 variable circular plots as possible each year, resulting in 520 cumulative plot visits. Surveys have yielded records for 100 different species of birds. Ninety-seven of the species recorded are classified as permanent or summer residents to the area, two are classified as transients in the area, and one as a winter resident to the area. Six breeding species recorded are considered species of conservation concern for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region, the bird conservation region in which George Washington Carver National Monument is located. Of the 97 breeding species recorded, ten species in grassland habitat and six in woodland habitat occurred in numbers large enough to calculate annual abundances with some degree of confidence. Trends in abundance were classified as uncertain for most species, which means that there were no significant increases or decreases, but it is not certain that trends were < 5% per year. The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in woodland habitat was stable. The Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) in grassland habitat was in moderate decline, and the Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in grassland habitat was in steep decline. Comparing population trends (i.e., changes in population size over time) on the park with regional trends for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region suggests that the bird community at George Washington Carver National Monument is faring similarly to that of the region as a whole. Trends in the park’s popula-tions of Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) and Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) in grassland habitat and Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) in woodland habitat were uncertain, whereas they declined significantly in the larger region, which could be a result of management on George Washington Carver National Monument. Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) population trends, while uncertain in grassland habitat on the park, increased significantly in the region. The Red-bellied Woodpecker utilizes trees for foraging, which are sparse in the grassland habitat on the park. Declining diversity and richness values suggest that park habitat is declining in its ability to meet the requirements of many of the park’s breeding bird species. This decline in species richness could reflect habitat management practices, but it could also reflect the influences of larger-scale factors such as weather or climatic conditions on vegetation. Therefore, continued monitoring of birds and their habitats on George Washington Carver National Monument as management and weather and climatic conditions change is essential for park management.
