Abstract:
Abstract ‘Atlas’ and ‘Monika’ alstroemeria (Alstroemeria hybrida L.) were grown in cooled (12 to 16C) and noncooled (15 to 18C) gravel substrate in four temperature-controlled greenhouse compartments having mean day/night air temperatures of: 20/14, 20/13, 22/13, and 24/14C. Total flower production of ‘Atlas’ in all compartments was 1.6 times greater than for ‘Monika’. The greatest production of ‘Atlas’ occurred with 20C average daytime air temperatures combined with root substrate temperatures 12C to 14C, which favored year-round production. Warmer day temperatures tended to improve flower grade and stem length of ‘Monika’; however, the higher yield in cooler air temperatures outweighed the contributions of warmer air temperatures to quality. ‘Atlas’ stems were significantly longer and of better quality than ‘Monika’ in all temperature regimes.

Abstract:
In the last fifty years, there has been a concern in the theatre world especially in Europe, about how to train actors to be open and responsive. One of the most respected and well-known teachers in this area is Monika Pagneux who taught for many years in Paris and now aged in her seventies, works as a freelance artist around the world. Her area of expertise is movement for actors. The aim of her work is to develop not only a responsive body but also an open and alive actor who is able to be creative in a disciplined yet risk-taking manner. This thesis is an investigation of the world of Monika Pagneux, including her fundamental principles and platforms of teaching movement for actors. A portrait of her work will be drawn and her influence on other performing arts practitioners. The data comes from three sources: my own field notes based on six weeks of classes in Australia and Paris, additional class notes by a movement expert and ten responses to an open ended questionnaire by former students. Their answers provide insights into the impact of her teaching professionally, in their lives and how they were transformed by her practice.

Abstract:
HYFLOW is a system promoting the expansion of low-carbon energy sources, perfectly in line with the objectives of the latest EU climate improvement regulations. The concept of the project is Power-to-Fuel (PTF) conversion, which will thus enable the production of low- or even zero-emission synthetic fuels so-called e-fuels with high energy density, a wide range of applications and closed-loop CO2 emissions. The technology is based on a revolutionary approach involving the integration of a high-temperature co-electrolysis system together with a Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) reactor for the synthesis of liquid fuels, with a view to utilizing the energy and CO2 from the combustion of e-fuels in a closed loop. The HYFLOW project is being developed by researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology, consisting of: Arkadiusz Baran, Katsiaryna Martsinchyk, Monika Lazor, Pavel Shuhayeu headed by team leader Aliaksandr Martsinchyk at the Faculty of Power and Aerospace Engineering.

Full text
Abstract:
This report details the climate (temperature, precipitation, drought, and streamflow) of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (NRA) during 2020. Gridded GIS maps are used to present broad-brush conditions across the region for each month. This regional presentation is compared to detailed data from Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS), weather stations in Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN), and data from USGS stream gages. Prior to analysis, a set of data quality control checks were performed by the authors in accordance with an established National Park Service protocol (Rocky Mountain Climate Working Group 2010). Key points summarizing calendar year 2020 are presented as bullets in the Conclusion section at the end of the report. There was significant spatial and month to month variability in the data that provided exceptions to these generalizations, so an examination of the regional maps is key to understanding the climatic patterns for 2020. Readers can download the data used in this report and make custom climate graphs and tables of their own by visiting www.ClimateAnalyzer.org.

Abstract:
Since their introduction to the United States in the 1960s, monk parakeets (Myiopsittamonachus) have thrived. Monk parakeets often construct nests on man-made structures, such as electric utility facilities and cell phone towers. Monk parakeets are non-native and not protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Their status at the State level varies considerably─from no regulation to complete protection. Thus, it is best to consult with the appropriate local wildlife management agency before initiating any control efforts. The monk parakeet is a popular cage bird, and although imports from South America have ceased, many are available in the U.S. through captive breeding and from individuals who take young birds from nests.

Mendelsohn, Mark, John Tiszler, and Tarja Sagar. Vegetation monitoring in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills region: 2014?2020 annual report. National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2300992.

Full text
Abstract:
Our Inventory & Monitoring team surveyed over 200 Terrestrial Native Vegetation Monitoring Plots in the Santa Monica Mountains and Simi Hills (SAMO) Region over the first seven years of this program?s history, 2014?2020. During this period, the park experienced a large wildfire in 2013 followed by historic drought, and then in 2018 the largest wildfire in the region?s recorded history, succeeded by well-timed rainfall. The goal of this monitoring program is to detect and understand the nature of vegetation change, for example in drought or post-fire environments, providing a knowledge base for developing effective management strategies. Our metrics include vegetation cover, species richness, shrub/tree abundance, survival, and recruitment. In general, SAMO experienced widescale native shrub dieback during the extended drought. Dry shrublands that subsequently burned to the ground in 2018 converted into a rich and widespread green-up with the substantial rains received in 2019, producing a very diverse assemblage of wildflowers (including many fire followers not seen in many years) and a strong recruitment of our native shrubs via resprouting and seedlings into 2020 across most of the park?s more pristine areas. We documented post-fire expansions in several populations of the federally endangered Braunton?s milkvetch. Non-native herbaceous species such as mustards dominated previously disturbed lands and expanded their coverage following the 2018 wildfire. The data we collected will be available for advancing the science of fire ecology, and informing future park management and interpretation programs.

Abstract:
Once common and widespread in Southern California, California red-legged frogs (Rana draytonii) began declining sometime in the middle of the 20th century. They were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1996. Three small and isolated populations remained in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties by the start of the 21st century. The nearest population of California red-legged frogs to Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is critically small, located 15 km to the north, yet there is evidence of persistence, including successful reproduction each year it has been measured. A potential solution to alleviate small population size and isolation is to reintroduce a species back to habitable historical locations nearby. In 2011, we initiated a project to reintroduce California red-legged frogs back to the Santa Monica Mountains, where historical records showed they were once widespread. We developed a procedure to transfer partial egg masses into tadpole rearing pens located within streams determined to be suitable for the species. This translocation protocol outlines our procedure and results for the first five years of the project. It is our hope that this protocol will guide and inform similar conservation efforts for California red-legged frogs in other parts of their range as well as other amphibian conservation efforts throughout the world.
