Abstract:
Abstract The following is an interview with activist Monica Jones conducted by Che Gossett and Eva Hayward. In this interview, Jones talks about her activism against the criminalization of sex work, recounting how the program Project ROSE, which was a revealing collaboration between the university and the police, functioned through carceral logics to detain and then according to a carceral economy of innocence, criminally prosecute or “reeducate” sex workers or those profiled as sex workers. Jones shows how the university is part of the carceral continuum and is a site of Black trans and sex worker and prison abolitionist struggle, which has intensified in the current organizing against police on campuses and entanglement of university and the prison-industrial complex and the policing functions of administration and university governance. Jones also shows how this is an HIV/AIDS activist issue given that the criminalization of sex work is bound up with from gentrification, displacement, and how that is exacerbated with COVID-19.

Abstract:
The article presents the figure of Monica, mother of Augustine, highlighting her spirituality as a Christian mother, underlining especially three elements. First, the fact that Monica is a middle-class woman, in relationship to women of high social rank, of whom we know the stories, told by Gregory of Nissa, Gregory of Nazianzus or Jerome. Later, the article points out how Monica is the image of the Church, and not just a domestic example of a Christian mother. Finally, the article shows that Monica, as “mother”, plays a role in the society, not only with respect to her children, but also expresses the identity of the mother. In Monica, the woman as “mother” is “subject” of rights, is “uxor” according to Roman law.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines the erasure of Monica in five hagiographies of Augustine written by the Order of Hermits of St Augustine in the fourteenth century. It investigates how the character of Monica functions as a foil to Augustine's religious doubt in his Confessions and why that emphasis was problematic for the Augustinian Hermits. The essay will demonstrate that the presence of Monica was incompatible with the hermits’ desire to showcase Augustine's eremitism as the cornerstone of his religious practice. In order to emphasize Augustine's devotion to the eremitical life, the hermits denied any substantial presence to Monica, who was a problematic reminder both of Augustine's doubt about monasticism and of the hermits’ doubts about the legitimacy of their parentage. This study explores the hermits’ doubt about the role of Monica in Augustine's religious formation, and how that doubt was indicative of their institutionalized way of looking at their faith.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the attempt to reconstruct the historical memory of the Holocaust in the novel by Polish writer Monika Schneiderman “Fałszerze pieprzu. Historia rodzinna”. The writer questions the issue of Polish-Jewish relations, the responsibility and guilt of Holocaust witnesses to its victims. The author, who has a complex identity, seeks to find out for herself why her Polish family did not show enough sympathy for the suffering of Jews during World War II, including her Jewish relatives. As such indifference on the part of Poles to Holocaust victims was quite common, Monica Schneiderman tries to explain this by examining the relations between societies who lived side by side for centuries in the pre-war period, concluding that the two neighbouring nations lived in separate communities that were not open to each other. Based on the reproduction of the history of her own family, the author seeks answers to difficult questions of universal human values – perception and understanding of others, empathy, compassion. In her works Monica Schneiderman shows the need to include these recently “closed” but extremely important topics in the public discourse.

Abstract:
Many works have been devoted to the study of the molecular genetic diversity of Artemia in different regions; however, there are regions such as Crimea, the largest peninsula in the Black Sea, which has seen few studies. Artemia specimens from several Crimean hypersaline lakes were analyzed using the mitochondrial marker cytochrome oxidase C (COI). The analyzed individuals from bisexual populations formed clades with the species A. salina, A. urmiana, A. sinica, and A. monica (=A. franciscana). A. sinica and A. monica had not been recorded in Crimea previously. In Lake Adzhigol, the three species A. urmiana, A. sinica, and A. monica were found at the same time, which has not been noted anywhere before. In the Crimean lakes, a total of 10 haplotypes were found, six of them for the first time: Once for A. monica, once for A. sinica, and four for A. salina. Those haplotypes may be regarded as endemic to Crimea. In the 1990s, experiments were carried out in Lake Yanyshskoe using mainly purchased cysts of Artemia, so A. monica and A. sinica were introduced into Crimea and could then have easily been spread by birds to other Crimean lakes.

Abstract:
Contact interaction in a wheel-rail pair and its corresponding stress-strain state for various combinations of materials of this pair and the weights of passenger and freight cars were considered. The materials under study were steel and high-strength cast iron based structural material MoNiCa with strength and wear-fatigue characteristics close to steel ones. The load on each wheel was: 53.9 and 294.3 kN for an empty and loaded freight car, 146.8 kN and 230.5 kN for an empty and loaded passenger car. The bottom surface of the rail was rigidly fixed.Young's modules were adopted as follows: 200 GPa for steel and 165 for MoNiCa. The results of finite element calculations of the three-dimensional stress-strain state showed that the largest von Mises stresses of 613.08 MPa occur in the wheel (steel)-rail (steel) pair of the loaded freight car. For all types of loading, the lowest stresses (15.8 % – 16.7 % less than in the steel-steel pair) are observed in the wheel (MoNiCa)-rail (MoNiCa) pair. This indicates the appropriateness of using MoNiCa for the manufacturing elements of the wheel-rail system.

Abstract:
Introduction: The WHO MONICA Project (Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease) was initiated in 1982. The purpose was to evaluate to what extent mortality trends could be explained by changes over time in the population load of conventional cardiovascular risk factors. To test this hypothesis, time trends in cardiovascular event rates have been correlated with trends in levels of risk factors in 35- to 64-year-old men and women in 38 populations. In most MONICA populations, the study has covered a period of 10 years or more. Methods: All acute myocardial infarction and stroke events have been registered in a population-based setting in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties from 1985 and onwards. The total population is approximately 510,000 inhabitants. In the frame of the WHO MONICA Project, the same strict criteria have been used in all years. Another part of the MONICA Project is population risk factor surveys. In Northern Sweden the first survey took place in 1986 and the following surveys were performed in 1990, 1994, and 1999, including the age group 25 - 74 years (the first two surveys were of the age range 25 - 64 years). Results: From 1985 to 2000, in total 18,105 suspected stroke events, aged 25 - 74 years, were scrutinized and validated at the central stroke office in Northern Sweden. Of these, 13,908 were found to fulfil the MONICA criteria of an acute stroke. During the period 1985 to 1998, in total 13,228 cases of suspected acute myocardial infarction, aged 25 - 64 years, were registered. Of these, 8,744 fulfilled the MONICA criteria for acute myocardial infarction. In the four surveys, in total 9,000 randomly selected men and women were invited for survey. Of these 6,952 (77%) participated in the surveys. Conclusion: From 1985 and onwards, the WHO MONICA project has been going on in Northern Sweden. During the whole time the same strict WHO criteria have been followed.

Abstract:
This research presents the results of tribo-fatigue behavior of austempered ductile cast iron MoNiCa and gives a comparison with standard grades of steel and cast iron. Due to the possibility to combine the castability of cast iron and toughness of steel in one material, new structural material MoNiCa attracted attention of industry and science because of economic benefits and high performance at the different application areas. After successful former experiments the main directions of further development of research for solving relevant practical wear and fatigue problems in rail-wheel system were framed. The complex experimental studies have demonstrated that MoNiCa is consistent with heat treated steels including the rail steels: required tensile strength of rail steel ranges from 1180 MPa to 1280 MPa when rolling surface hardness have to be from 38 HRC to 44 HRC whereas new structural material showed higher tensile strength up to 1400 MPa and slightly higher hardness up to 50 HRC. Herewith the workability of frictional couple cast iron MoNiCa/steel 20MnCr5G exceeds work performance of steel/steel system by 14 %.

HSU, Maria Min-Hui. "An Investigation into the Importance of «Inculturation» in the Image of Our Lady in Relation to Visual Arts in Religious Education according to Monica Liu." Foro de Educación 18, no. 1 (January 4, 2020): 167–87. http://dx.doi.org/10.14516/fde.677.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of «inculturation» in the religious images drawn by Monica Liu (Ho-Pei), a unique artist who promoted Religious Art and Education in Taiwan. Monica Liu adopted Western Christianity into Chinese art to create paintings that reflect her love for nature as well as Our Lady who is deeply venerated in the Catholic Church and regarded as the mother of humanity. This paper is a qualitative research based on an interview conducted with Huang Wan-Yun, a protégée of Monica Liu who had a very close relationship with the latter during the last ten years of her life. This research is also based on some writings that Monica left behind and several articles written about her by acquaintances. The culture and faith expressed by Monica Liu through Our Lady’s images help us to deeply understand the value and relationship between religious art and faith. In addressing the needs of the secular world, religious art has encountered difficulties in terms of contemporary aesthetics. Monica’s distinct aesthetic considered «moral virtues» important to modern or contemporary art and their absence could result in distorted values. Therefore, true mission work in the field of religious art has to be close to everyone’s heart, as well as emphasize the importance of inculturation through natural representations and create awareness of taboo in art, which involves «additional and supplementary» elements in original artworks.

Hi, everyone. I am Monica Hakimi from the University of Michigan Law School, and I would like to welcome you to our panel on cyber power and its limits. The topic almost does not need an introduction. We all know just from reading the news that our collective dependence on cyberspace is also a huge vulnerability, and state and non-state actors exploit this vulnerability to do one another harm. They use cyber technologies not just to spy on one another, but also, for example, to interfere in national elections, to steal trade secrets or other valuable information, to disrupt the activities of political, military, or economic institutions, and at times to cause physical destruction or death.

Abstract:
This is the panel on the use of defensive force against non-state actors. We thought we would use the campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS, to take stock on where we are on the question of when, if ever, states may use defensive force against non-state actors in other states.
