Watson, Rebecca Leigh Hagen. "La Monica: A Study of Early Baroque Performance Practices as Applied to Philipp Friedrich Böddecker' s Sonata sopra "La Monica"." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/613349.

Abstract:
In the course of this work, examples of early baroque ornamentation extracted from historical vocal treatises will be applied to Philipp Friedrich Böddecker's "Sonata sopra 'La Monica.'" This study will demonstrate that Böddecker's sonata for bassoon and basso continuo is derived from a popular vocal tune of the 17th century and therefore an informed early baroque instrumental performance practice for this work can be extracted from early Baroque Era vocal performance treatises. Additionally, testimonies from authentic performance practices of the early Baroque Era will be applied to this work in an effort to create a guide to a historically informed performance.

Vianna, Ana Faria Hadad. "A arqueologia do trabalho vocal proposto por Francesca Della Monica." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/EBAC-9TDLM7.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to analyze the teaching methodology Francesca Della Monica, Italian artist and pedagogue, considered one of the most important researchers of today on vocal work, especially with regard to the archeology of voice and the use of your full artistic potential, is in the field of Music or Theatre. It is intended to highlight your commands in this methodology and its imagistic symbolic approach in the treatment of speech, the multiple spatial dimensions of action and vocal gestures of voice as well as the importance of considering, in vocal action, the actor's subjective space in which transitions voice and where she is a producer of meaning itself. The methodology used in addition to literature review, document analysis and semi-structured interviews, focused fieldwork, with the accompaniment of artistic and pedagogical Della Monica in six periods in which taught five workshops for theater groups and artists in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. As a result, we present an analytical description of the philosophical foundations that underpin the proposed Della Monica, as well as several of their practical activities.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the discursive position of 'goddess feminism', in relation to some of the difference- and eco feminist positions from the1960s and until today. In focus are the texts of the two goddess feminists, Monica Sjöö and Starhawk. The thesis contributes to a historiographical (re)situating of their political and religious narratives. It also contributes to an elaborated understanding of these goddess feminists and the goddess feminist discourse they are part of. The tentative feminist figuration 'the goddess identified feminist’ is articulated as a tool to discuss the religious and political discourse of goddess feminists as part of contemporary feminist and environmental political conversations and practices. Donna Haraway’s and Karen Barad’s post humanist theoretical interventions are used to explore and discuss the affinities between goddess feminists (re)negotiation of the subject/s 'goddess/nature/human' – and the (re)negotiation of 'nature/human’ made by new materialist/post humanist difference- and eco feminists of the 2000s. Rosi Braidotti’s writings on sexual difference, becoming and feminist figurations further informs the conclusions drawn in the thesis. Drawing on the methodological approaches of Clare Hemmings and Mieke Bal in the analysis of story-telling and subject construction, a contribution is also made, to the understanding of how story-telling as part of a discourse, produces meaning and asymmetric subject relations. In particular the thesis shows how a compassionate feminist storytelling involuntarily produces subject positions through, essentialist dualisms, hierarchical ordering and othering. In parallel, the thesis also discusses alternative narrative strategies that focus on both the discursive boarders and affinities.

Abstract: This cohort study type was carried out in Campinas-SP, in Jardim Santa Mônica District, and had in view the annual incidence of toxocariasis and its socioeconomic risk factors and its association to breathing and dermatological signals and symptons. The studied population was constituted by seventy two childrens, from 4 to 15 years old, who attented to the reagion teaching institution's early period and who presented negative serology in a first imunoenzimatic serological inquiry (ELISA). To all of them, it was applied a closed questionnaire, which aimed to identify socioeconomic variant. Throughout a year, another questionnaire was also monthly applied to all of them, wich aimed to identify if the child had presented any sign or symptom of breath or dermatological disease in the previous thirty days. This information was monthly crossed with the one obtained in these children's clinical reports in the health basic unit to which they were connected. After six months, new serology was accomplished in all children and three of them presented positive serology to T. canis infection. Other three ones left the cohort, by abandon, after this second assessment. After more six months, new serology was achiwed and, from sixty six children analysed, two turned out to be T. canis seropositive. At the end of the study, it was possible to estimate a rate of 7,2% cases of Toxocara canis infection for each hundred children/year. It has not been verified a substantial difference in the incidence of infection relate to the variants analysed in this study

Abstract:
This study is about the artist Monica Sjoo’s (1938-2005) painting God giving birth (1968) that was accused of being blasphemous and obscene in the early 1970s. God giving birth could have had much in common with Niki de Saint-Phalle’s She – a cathedral (1966), both works suggesting a mother goddess image. The main difference however can be found in the fact that Monica Sjoo’s painting had connection to the women’s movement in the 1970s. Monica Sjoo’s artwork responded to other feminist artwork of that period. Among several feminist artists during the period about 1968-1985, an iconography was in use that focused on vulvar imagery, experience of childbirth and goddess images. In particulary the mother goddess was embraced. The female body in art was re-sacred and invested with meaning connected with women’s cycles of birth-death and rebirth and the earth as a mother goddess.

Tshabalala, Maramane Monica. "An empowerment approach to parental involvement in the primary school / Tshabalala Maramane Monica." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/3110.

Abstract:
Parental involvement in education is accepted as an important aspect of learner academic achievement. In fact, there is research evidence that associates high learner achievement with high rates of parental involvement. However, judging by the poor levels of achievement attained by learners in, for instance, areas like reading, writing and numeracy in primary school grades, the question rises as to whether parental involvement is consciously promoted in primary schools. This empirical research intended to investigate how parental involvement is currently promoted in primary schools. The literature review revealed the basic obligations of schools and parents as expressed in Epstein's six typologies of parental involvement, which form the basis of all endeavours towards enhancing parental involvement. Consequently, it is concluded that strategies or programmes aimed at promoting parental involvement, must embody parenting, communication, volunteering, learning at home, participation in decision-making and collaboration with the community. In this regard, the child's environment should be regarded as an ecology consisting of the school, home and community. The main empirical research finding indicates generally, that the meaning attached to parental involvement falls short of its essence, and focuses on response activities from both school staff and parents. The main recommendation, therefore, is advocacy that begins with empowering all stakeholders with regard to the essence of parental involvement. In this regard, the Empowerment Approach to Parental Involvement (EAPI) recommended in this research, proposes a model that empowers individual schools and the community, through a school-based and cluster-based focus. The EAPI model presents a series of actions leading to a modus operandi that recognises the power of zenzele (do it yourself) for schools and parents, and masakhane (doing it for ourselves together) for school clusters and the community. Both concepts utilise principles based on ubuntu and express the adage: "it takes a village to raise a child."

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the novel Brick Lane (2003), by Monica Ali, focusing on the process of empowerment of the protagonist Nazneen. By making use of the concepts of place and non-place proposed by Marc Augé, I intend to examine passages from the novel that characterize the feeling of not-belonging experienced by the character. Nazneen resorts to the memories of her childhood with her sister Hasina in Bangladesh in order to escape the physical space of Brick Lane, which is a non-place for Nazneen, who is unable to reconstruct her identity fragmented in the process of dislocation from one culture to another. Considering the historical and cultural aspects of Bangladesh, Nazneens homeland, this work intends to discuss the experiences of the protagonist and other diasporic subjects in the novel as well as to analyze the crucial role played by Hasina (and her letters) in the narrative. The present multicultural and cosmopolitan context of London will also be investigated, with a discussion of real situations affecting immigrants and their representations in the novel. This dissertation also considers the gendered nature of contemporary migratory movements which offer new perspectives on the consequences of diaspora. I will also analyze selected passages from the novel that highlight the gradual process of autonomy experienced by Nazneen who, eventually, feels at home again

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes President William Jefferson Clinton's self-defense during the first four months of 1998. The study focuses on Clinton's denial of the sex scandal with White House intern Monica Lewinsky when the story broke out in the Washington Post on January 21, 1998. William L. Benoit's theory of Image Restoration is used to examine each strategy's distribution. Benoit's framework consists of identifying strategies used by denial to clarify and repair a positive image despite negative public accusations. The study employed a content analysis as the research methodology. There were a total of 1,392 sentences contained in twenty-four articles from the Washington Post, only articlesfrom the Post were included in the initial search. Research was conducted using microfilm of the Washington Post full-text articles during the time period of interest: January 21, 1998 to April 20, 1998. The dependent variables were the number of sentences devoted to the amount of the Washington Post coverage given to the strategies utilized by Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Clinton's staff, Clinton' s lawyer, Clinton's friends, the media, Al Gore, and the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, the sentences were coded on the basis of image restoration theory and strategy categories defined by Benoit. The data showed the strategy of denial was employed at the highest rate among all strategies during the three selected time periods. Specifically, the denial strategy was used the most frequently with 348 quotations (25%). In the short run, Clinton's popularity among followers was not damaged, but in the long run, he faced impeachment proceedings. Therefore, the strategy of denial is not always a clarification action. This study indicates that the strategy of denial merely complicates and prolongs the whole process; therefore twisting Benoit's original definition.

Abstract:
This essay focuses on the topics of sexism and the function of gender and oppression in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane. Instances in the novel are related to real world incidents in order to show how Ali, in spite of her Western upbringing and perspective, has accurately depicted several problematical cases of injustice in Muslim culture. Even though Ali has been criticized for her, supposedly, incorrect portrayal of Bangladeshis in London, this essay will argue that the topics of the novel remain relevant in the larger scheme of Muslim society.

Palmer, June Monica. "The impact of educators' emotional intelligence on their roles as managers of change / June Monica Palmer." Thesis, North-West University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/2337.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of Emotional Intelligence (EI) on the educator's role as a manager of change. The study explored the role of the educator as manager of change, to what extent EI contributes to workplace success and how change impacts disadvantaged, mixed and ex-Model C schools. The ultimate purpose was to develop a possible framework to assist educators to manage the process of change in an emotionally intelligent way. In developing such a framework, the focus was on the following aspects: To present an overview of the educator as manager of change. To delineate EI as important contributor to workplace success. To explore the change management process in disadvantaged, mixed and ex-Model C secondary schools in the Gauteng Province and the Eastern Cape Province. The literature study revealed that the emotional well-being of the educator and the learner is increasingly recognised as an important predictor of success in school, family and work life. Furthermore, EI is widely accepted as foundational to getting along with others in the workplace, as well as being a primary managerial and leadership competency. EI is also believed by many to be the determinant of who advances most quickly in an organization, and EI skills may be particularly useful when the organization is undergoing change. Emotionally intelligent managers are therefore better able to cope with the inevitability of change within the organization, tolerate uncertainty, build employee commitment, motivate others, communicate effectively, manage conflict, reduce employees' anxiety and thus enhance performance. The empirical study consisted of a structured questionnaire distributed to a sample population of educators and learners in the Gauteng Province and the Eastern Cape Province. It was aimed at gathering information about the process of change in six secondary schools and how educators and learners cope with change. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with members of the School Management Team (SMT) and the School Governing Body (SGB) members at each school. The main findings of the empirical investigation revealed that educators and learners lack the tools to deal with change in school and in their everyday lives effectively. An EI competency framework for change was proposed to assist educators to deal with change in an emotionally intelligent way. The framework was structured to provide Gauteng and Eastern Cape schools with a usable tool for implementing EI so that they may cope effectively with change.

Abstract:
This study focuses on how the HIV and Aids pandemic affects educators in primary schools and how these educators need to be supported to cope more resiliently with the challenges posed by the HIV/Aids pandemic. This study needed to understand how primary school educators experienced the impact of the HIV/Aids pandemic, both professionally and personally. Educators in general are personally affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially. Affected educators are professionally affected by the HIV/Aids, when they are burdened by a large numbers of orphans in their classes, absenteeism of learners and colleagues, poor performance of both educators and learners, high workload and multiple roles they have to perform. The impacts, both personal and professional, are mostly negative. However, to date no study has focused on the impacts of the pandemic on primary school educators. In this study, a phenomenological design was followed. Interviews were conducted with a carefully recruited sample of participants (i.e. primary school educators affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic either in their families or by having orphans in their classes) in the Vaal Triangle area. The researcher recruited participants by means of snowball sampling. Fifteen affected educators participated in this study. Primary school educators interviewed, noted poor emotional, spiritual, physical and social health. They also reported that they do not cope with their duties as educators effectively. Affected primary school educators are in need of comprehensive support to deal with the HIV/Aids pandemic related stressors from the DoE, SMT's, colleagues and the community at large. Affected educators noted that they need to be supported, by means of team work with colleagues and the community; medical support; amongst others HIV education for learners, educators and parents and practical support and counselling for dealing with difficulties created by the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Ahmed, Elsayed Abdullah Muhammad. "East meets West : gender and cultural difference in the work of Ahdaf Soueif and Monica Ali." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54113/.

Abstract:
My thesis looks at encounters between East and West in the novels of Ahdaf Soueif and how similar issues and themes can be seen in Monica Ali's 'Brick Lane' , a novel that brings together Bangladesh and the UK. It is divided into five chapters. Chapters 1 to 4 focus on the socio-historical contexts of Egypt and British Colonisation and themes in two major novels by Ahdaf Soueif, 'In the Eye of the Sun' (1992), and 'The Map of Love' (1999). Chapter 5 takes a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on Monica Ali's 'Brick Lane' (2002). My selection of texts has been based on thematic similarities and the ethos that the novels manifest despite their different contexts. In this study, I aim to offer an analysis of the specificities of the novels in question and of their commonalities. Soueif and Ali have been widely published and read, and they have received recognition and accolades from the media and the academy alike. Both Soueif and Ali have stepped across cultural dividing lines to claim a voice of their own, creating a meeting ground based on plurality and openness to various cultures. They can be categorised as diasporic Muslim writers who write in English in Soueif's case in an exilic environment, investigating the misconceptions that exist in the spaces between East and West. My way of seeing and/or narrating is hybrid insofar as it draws on Egyptian and British cultures. My goal is to strengthen a view of Britain and Egypt as contemporary multicultural societies where hybrid cultural identities are questioned throughout. I wish to argue that Britain, Egypt and South Asia easily inhabit shared histories which have shaped and influenced each other. All share rich histories and humanist values, which if better understood, could be seen to complement and sustain each other.

Abstract:
My research has been a critical analysis, developed from the perspective of my own artistic interventions, dialogue and debate, gained through my practice as an artist. As part of my investigation, I have developed a series of artworks utilising video and photography. The work deals with issues of migration, family, home, place, identity and travel in connection to my own biography. I have undertaken four research field trips to Brazil, London, Angola, Cape Verde and Portugal. In order to create my practical research work, I participated in programmes of residencies with galleries and foundations in those countries and I have also worked with my own family network. I have been analyzing theoretical issues related to auto-biography and identity in relation to alterity, diaspora, and hybridity within contemporary post colonial art practices. I have examined theories raised by my artwork in relation to notions of travel and migration and to psychoanalytical theory , film studies, feminist postcolonial theory and psycho- geography, I connected these notions to concepts of post-modern theories. Subsequently I have been examining models of the artist as a producer, researcher, traveller, and self-ethnographer. The work that I have developed for this research are: An Ocean Between Us (2012) a short video work and some photographs connect to this work; a series of photographs entitled Erosion (2013) and the main installation piece of the research, Once Upon a Time (2012), a tryptic video. I presented the work I have been producing for my practice-based research in three exhibitions in Lisbon, Portugal in October and November 2012 respectively in Carpe Diem and Plataforma Revolver, and in January 2013 at the gallery Appleton square.

Abstract:
Santa Monica Bay and its vast beaches are important Los Angeles icons, while also providing significant ecosystem services to over millions of recreational visitors annually. Contaminated runoff from numerous watersheds surrounding the Bay, especially the 87% urbanized Ballona Creek Watershed, have historically resulted in poor water quality along areas of the Bay shoreline. Decades of monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) along the Bay’s shoreline has been associated with NPDES wastewater discharge and stormwater programs. Many projects have been implemented throughout the watersheds (e.g. sewer improvements, biofiltration systems, low-flow diversions (LFDs)) to lessen flows of runoff from contaminating surf zone recreational waters. Despite decades of monitoring, there has been no long-term assessment of trends in shoreline FIB, especially in response to implementation of projects to improve water quality. The goal of this study was to assemble 30 years of monitoring data (1988-2017) for E. coli and enterococci to assess trends along the entire shoreline of Santa Monica Bay. Data were analyzed by calculating rolling 30-day geometric means, and comparing means by geographic subdivision, between wet and dry weather, and over time. Resulting trends for both E. coli and enterococci were: 1) concentrations peaked around 2005 when many stations shifted to sampling points where runoff mixed directly with surf zone water; 2) after 2005, concentrations fell to present levels, especially at beaches where LFDs were implemented; 3) concentrations were extremely variable during the 2016-17 wet season; 4) the north and central areas of the Bay, impacted by runoff from the Ballona Creek and Malibu Creek Watersheds, had greater concentrations relative to the south area; and 5) dry weather concentrations were steadily low, whereas wet weather displayed a higher degree of variability and may present a more significant challenge to meet water quality standards going forward. Implementation of LFDs and other best management practices to restrict polluted runoff from flowing into the surf zones of the Bay’s beaches most likely improved water quality throughout the Bay.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the relationship between plans and their implementation through development projects. Specifically, it asks: Do local plans that specify priority sites for development lead to the approvals of those projects? To answer this question, I look at the recent planning initiatives and their associated priority development projects in two cities - Santa Monica's Land Use and Transportation Element (LUCE) and Bergamot Transit Village project, and Newton's Comprehensive Plan and Austin Street project. Specifically, I look at the permitting process of each project to determine if the plans had any role in facilitating project approvals. I conclude that while plans play an important role in defining community priorities, they have a limited ability to facilitate project approvals. Instead, I find that each city's specific legal framework around land use decisions, including state laws on voter referendum and local policy on special permits, play a much more definitive role. In light of underlying legal and political undertones around development, I offer two suggestions to cities aiming to improve plan implementation. First, facilitate direct ideation from community members through the appointment of citizen task-forces that promote citizen leadership and co-learning around community concerns, while maintaining traditional public hearings as a platform for structured support and dissent. Second, build up and maintain confidence in this enhanced task-force process by insulating carefully-vetted outcomes from outright repeal. Together, these recommendations encourage a more politically-strategic and engaged approach to planning, suggesting that plan implementation will occur best when legal mechanisms and community political will align with the vision set forth in a city's best laid plans.

Söderberg, Stefan. "Leptin : a risk marker for cardiovascular disease." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Medicin, 1999. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-101355.

Abstract:
A major cause of morbidity and early death in the Western societies is cardiovascular disease (CVD) secondary to atherosclerotic disease. Metabolic aberrations have been linked to CVD. Particular combinations of these so-called risk markers are common and (central) obesity, Type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, dysfibrinolysis and hyperinsulinemia are often associated. This has been entitled the Insulin Resistance Syndrome (1RS), due to underlying insulin resistance. Moreover, aberrations in circulating levels of androgens and IGF-binding proteins are associated with 1RS. The main hypothesis in this thesis was that increased levels of leptin, the recently discovered adipocyte derived hormone in combination with obesity may be an important factor in the link between 1RS and the development of CVD. The association between leptin levels and variables associated with the Insulin Resistance Syndrome was studied in a healthy sample (n=163) of middle-aged men and women from the northern Sweden MONICA health survey. Central obesity was associated with high levels of leptin and insulin in men and women. In contrast, central obesity was linked to low testosterone levels in men, whereas in women, central obesity was associated with high testosterone but low SHBG levels. Furthermore, in males and postmenopausal women central obesity was a major determinant for circulating leptin. Leptin levels were associated with biochemical androgenicity in non-obese men and women. The direction of this association was dependent on gender and body fat distribution. Specifically, testosterone was inversely associated to leptin in non-obese men and in normal weight women whereas testosterone was positively associated to leptin in non-obese women. In contrast, adiposity and insulin levels, but not testosterone, were associated to leptin in obese men and women. Similarly, leptin was associated to IGFBP-1 and proinsulin in non-obese men and premenopausal women. Hyperleptinemia was significantly associated to high PAI-1 levels in men and in centrally obese women. In a multivariate model, high leptin levels predicted PAI-1 levels in men but not in women. Finally, leptin levels were related to blood pressure in obese men. The impact of hyperleptinemia on future risk for development of CVD was tested in a nested case-referent study based on the MONICA and the Västerbotten Intervention Program surveys. It was found that hyperleptinemia and high total cholesterol levels were associated with increased risk for development of myocardial infarction whereas high levels of apolipoprotein A-l were protective. Hyperleptinemia together with hypertension remained as significant risk markers for hemorrhagic stroke whereas hypertension alone predicted ischemic stroke. The combinations of hyperleptinemia on one hand and low apolipoprotein A- 1 and high blood pressure on the other were associated with a pronounced increased risk for myocardial infarction and hemorrhagic stroke, respectively. In conclusion, hyperleptinemia is independently associated with several risk markers for CVD included in the insulin resistance syndrome. Furthermore, high leptin levels predict the development of CVD.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the failures that occurred during the construction of the Jamuna Bridge Abutment in Bangladesh have been investigated. In particular, the influence of heterogeneity on slope stability has been studied using statistical methods, random field theory and the finite element method. The research is divided into three main parts: the statistical characterization of the Jamuna River Sand, based on an extensive in-situ and laboratory database available for the site; calibration of the laboratory data against a double-hardening elastoplastic soil model; and stochastic finite element slope stability analyses, using a Monte Carlo simulation, to analyse the slope failures accounting for heterogeneity. The sand state has been characterised in terms of state parameter, a meaningful quantity which can fully represent the mechanical behaviour of the soil. It was found that the site consists of predominantly loose to mildly dilative material and is very variable. Also, a Normal distribution was found to best represent the state parameter and a Lognormal distribution was found to best represent the tip resistance. The calibration of the constitutive model parameters was found to be challenging, as alternative approaches had to be adopted due to lack of appropriate test results available for the site. Single-variate random fields of state parameter were then linked to the constitutive model parameters based on the relationships found between them, and a parametric study of the abutment was then carried out by linking finite elements and random field theory within a Monte Carlo framework. It was found that, as the degree of anisotropy of the heterogeneity increases, the range of structural responses increases as well. For the isotropic cases, the range of responses was relatively smaller and tended to result in more localised failures. For the anisotropic cases, it was found that there are two different types of deformation mechanism. It was also found that, as the vertical scale of fluctuation becomes bigger, the range of possible structural responses increases and failure is more likely. Finally, it was found that the failed zones observed during the excavation of the West Guide Bund of the Jamuna Bridge Abutment could be closely predicted if heterogeneity was considered in the finite element analyses. In particular, it was found that, for such a natural deposit, a large degree of anisotropy (in the range of 20) could account for the deformation mechanisms observed on site.
