Abstract:

Abstract:
Despite the very small size of the territory, the Principality of Monaco is considered as an independent state according to international law. In fact, it is completely integrated into the French territory that has not annexed it, which is quiet surprising for such a centralized country. The tax haven status of the Principality is the consequence of this anachronism, a logical evolution for a country which has always wanted to justify and protect its sovereignty by negotiating with major regional powers. Similarly, its strategic location on the Mediterranean sea has been a bargaining element for border empires and kingdoms that marked its past. The royal family has played rivalry between these powerful neighbours, to always defend its independence which, since the twentieth century until today, has set the problem of an organization that is now archaic, with arbitrary justice and where the executive and legislative powers are not actually separated, leading to the extreme such as collaboration with the Nazis during the Second World War. France, current tutelary power, watches this territory and orchestrates it to its advantage, but this situation is not without occasional jolts. After analysing Monegasque peculiarities and evidence presented to the international community, its annexation to France is a logical conclusion to a territory that has abandoned any identity to be now only a financial place

Abstract:
Monaco and the sea. An ancient, essential and changing relation with a scientific dimension. Military and commercial harbour created by the republic of genes, monaco is an independant and sovereign state since the xiv th century. Princes got profit from strategic and political position of the "rocher" and perceipted taxes on commercial ships passing in monaco waters, with a well know war fleet. Prince albert 1, with his sea studies and campaigns brought oceanography to become a science of future, he created oceanology which is the science of the sciences of the sea. Many discoveries participated in building of scientific reputation for monaco. Prince rainier iii pursued the works of the great grandfather helping the scientific institutions he created and, himself, creating new structures in scientific marine field or favourising installation of such institutions on the territory. By then, discoveries area was over : protection of the sea against pollution and better knowledge on ocean world are the main aim. Sea is essential for principality of monaco on both political and economic points of vue : without the sea, there would have been no state or monaco would have disappeared. (. . . )

Abstract:
Lack of space represents a considerable constraint to economic development. It can equally constitute a powerful stimulus through the pressing need constantly to increase productivity per square metre. In such conditions, scrupulous attention to the organization and use of the available area on the part of the relevant authorities proves vital and, furthermore, has an indisputable influence on the surrounding region. It is moreover important to verify whether the distinctive features of such places make them an exception to the laws of traditional economic theories. If this is indeed the case, more operational methods will have to be applied in order to inform the political decisions made, within the framework of our study, by the authorities of Monaco

Abstract:
From the end of the XVIIIth century to the middle of the XIXth century, from Honoré III (1720-1795) to Florestan Ist (1785-1856), taking in Honoré IV (1758-1819) and Honoré V (1778-1841), the cultural and political lives of the princes of Monaco contained some enduring features, certain brilliant aspects of the Enlightenment that were to last. The royal family of Monaco, elevated for a short while as foreign princes to the court in 1688, while hardly acknowledged at the end XVIIIth century, were not perhaps some of the first to advocate the new spirit, although there was no doubt they helped to introduce the new ideas circulating during that period to the upper echelons of the aristocracy. With their newly acquired French cultural background and with a keenness to make up for their lack of reputation as new men (novi homines) by dedicating themselves to the symbols of refinement and to the sociability of their rank, the Grimaldis were distinguished for the fact that they had a twofold status and three residences: they were members of the aristocracy in France, in Paris, at the court, and lords of land in Normandy; they were also masters of a small principality between France and Italy. As rulers practising enlightened despotism in Monaco right up to the time of the secession of Menton and Roquebrune in 1848, the princes continued to apply within their States and properties certain ideas and practices that had been exercised at the end of the XVIIIth century, adapting them to suit their own ideals of aristocratic patronage and their own interests. These practices included in particular the mania for collecting things, the mania for English things, agronomy and philanthropy. How to deal with the poverty and land use seemed to them to have become the essential requirements to cope with the growing industrialisation

The present study titled " Viva El Rey ": Acclamation and celebration for D. Joseph I in Pernambuco (1742-1777) has the intention to analyze the festivities that were performed for the monarch in the captaincy of Pernambuco, specifically in the village of Recife and Olinda city, by occasion of his acclamation and celebration of his life and health due the events of the earthquake and outrage. From the practice of celebrating the king without his actual presence, we see these statements as a way to bring the sovereign to the location with the aid of representatives formed by members of the local elite, who organized and took part in these celebrations. We analyze these parties as an efficient feature exaltation of the king and statement of royal power, as well as a way of demonstrating loyalty and allegiance to the monarch by their distant vassals. Our writing focuses on the final years of the reign of King John V, father of D. Joseph I, and then we pass by all his reign, which lasted twenty years ending with his death in 1777.

Abstract:
After a seven centuries dynastic continuity and resounding economic ups and downs, the Principality of Monaco presents a social law which is said to be marked by tradition and jurisprudence. Salaried employees and employers liven up a labour market generating various jobs, source of conflicts where different forms of consent and breaches of liberty would keep close. The author shows us an unrecognised specifically designed and somewhat outdated juridical field. The close relationships between labour laws and French law it is indebted to are closely gone through. The consequences of an excessive juridical adjustment are put forward to plead for the maintenance of Monegasque juridical distinctive features open to modernity and concerned with the interests of a flourishing but particularly fragile economy

We propose to study the contemporary history of this nation - bit by bit saved from political and financial ruin by chance, culture, science, tourism and industry. From autonomy to independence, the governors and people forged the conditions of their future and survival. But this rapid expansion isn't enough to explain how Monaco reached its full political maturity in a Europe of large political powers while its territory was reduced to nothing. Political, social, and economical crises, the privileged but sometimes conflicting relationships of the prince and his subjects, and diplomatic relationships enabled the affirmation and the emergence of the principality. The history of Monaco is the story of a state not unlike those on the continent. With regard to culture, the economy, diplomacy, and social life, we are attempting here to uncover the fascinating destiny of this community that is deeply rooted in Europe

Abstract:
This lecture-recital investigated the music of Richard A. Monaco, especially the two sonatas for trombone (1958 and 1985). Monaco (1930-1987) was a composer, trombonist and conductor whose instrumental works are largely unpublished and relatively little known. In the lecture, a fairly extensive biographical chapter is followed by an examination of some of Monaco's early influences, particularly those in the music of Hunter Johnson and Robert Palmer, professors of Monaco's at Cornell University. Later style characteristics are discussed in a chapter which examines the Divertimento for Brass Quintet (1977), the Duo for Trumpet and Piano (1982), and the Second Sonata for Trombone and Piano (1985). The two sonatas for trombone are compared stylistically and for their position of importance in the composer's total output. The program included a performance of both sonatas in their entirety.

. . En toute humilité
Under this title so many stakes are burying. . . All the more interesting that they are treading some various aspects, looking at innermost beings, but also social habits, and local marketing. In fact, anecdotal feelings, which don't put up with constitute the "little history"; they are structuring it. At last, even the period chosen subtends a certain mystery, the one that single out with its seal its years. . . Nearly unknown. . . Unlovely ? However they sustain so many lives of prime importance daily | forbidden too, they are suffocated by princes' past, crushed by their own history. Because after all, the real wager of this research is to clear up a paradox. It purposes to materialize subjects' beings, to restore themselves breath and life thanks to sentences and numbers. Aix-Marseille 3, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999AIX32010.

Abstract:
The fact that the principality of monaco is extremely small within the community of states gives its foreign relations some particular charasteristics. The study of the international relations of the micro-state of monaco revolves around two major axes : on the one hand, the relationship between monaco and france, and on the other hand, the the relations between monaco and the rest of the world. Strong historical and geographical reasons have lead to the development of a very complex network of links between monaco and france, the franco-monegasque treaties which constitute the legal basis for these relations do not only have an impact on the regulations of the constitutive elements of the state of monaco, but also have on the regulation of the domestic and foreign policy of the principality. Often based on co-operation and reciprocity, the franco-monegasque treaties establish a right of insight into, or even a power of control over monegasque decisionmaking, in effect limiting the independance of this micro-state. The treaty signed on the 17 th july 1918 between monaco and france is fundamental in the determination of the legal status of the principality. It only vaguely resembles a protectorate treaty even if it affects the internal and international powers of the state of monaco. The skewed balance of powers underlying the relations between monaco and france is absent from the relations developped between monaco and the rest of the world. Subject only to the authority of international law, the principality is placed, at least intheory, on equal footing with other countries, which allows it to assert its international sovereingty by participating in multilateral conferences, by joining intergovernmental organisations and by signing concerted legal documents of a conventional or non-conventional nature. The provisions of certains franco-monegasque treaties as well as the state of the monegasque legislation still limit the full development of the principality within the community of states

Abstract:

Abstract:
This practice-led research project examined the audience experience of immersive environments in participatory performance. Drawing upon the work of artist Ilya Kabakov, Gaston Bachelard's Poetics of Space (1964) and Leibniz's theory of the monad, the study investigated how an immersive space can be constructed to evoke emotion and memory recall in participants. The research consisted of two cycles of creative experimentation resulting in the presentation of a final piece entitled Dulcet. The research contributes new terminology to the discourse surrounding the participant experience in immersive environments, specifically space-as-memory, the role of ambiguity in spatial design and the construct of the monadic environment.

Abstract:
Universal algebra has long been regarded as a fundamental tool in studying semantics of programming languages. Within this paradigm, one can formulate statements regarding the correctness of a program by looking at the interpretations of the code in any model for the language.;While this provides a description of finite computations, other models have to be introduced in order to provide a semantics for recursion and infinite computations in general. This leads to a study of rational and infinite terms. Such terms arise by a dual construction to that of the finite ones. namely, while the latter form an initial algebra, the former are a final coalgebra.;For this reason, it is natural to approach the study of infinite terms by dualising the categorical model of universal algebra. This leads to various different constructions, which are worth of investigation. In this thesis we approach two of them. In one case, we introduce the notions of cosignature, coequation and comodel, in the spirit of the theory of coalgebraic specification. In the second we focus on the properties of monads which can model infinitary computations. Such monads we call guarded, and include, amongst others, the monads of finite terms, infinite terms, rational terms and term graphs. As a byproduct of identifying this notion, we can solve algebraic systems of equation, which are an abstract counterpart to the notion of a recursive program scheme.;Many guarded monads we encounter are obtained by collecting, in an appropriate sense, a suitable family of coagebras. These examples are all instances of a general theorem we present, which tells under which conditions we can define a monad by a colimit operation, and when such comonads are guarded.;The level of abstraction allowed by the use of the categorical formalism allows us to instantiate some of the results in different categories, obtaining a monadic semantics for rational and infinite parallel term rewriting.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine whether there is any advantage both for natural persons and corporate entities to be domiciled in the principality of monaco on the basis of the franco-monegasque tax agreements of 1 april 1950 and 18 may 1963. The peculiarity of the franco-monegasque relationship lies in the fact that nationality plays a vital role whereas generally nationality has no effect from a tax point of view. As far as natural persons are concerned, the correlation between french nationlity and residence in monaco is sometines close in the case of the absolute primacy of nationality over residence; certain categories of french nationals only are subject to tax on the whole of their income by assimilating the monegasque domicile into the french domicile, in contrast to nationals of any other nationality ; and it is sometimes weak when nationality does not prevent residence having some consequences, particularly in matters of settlement and inheritance tax. As for corporate entities, despite the various restrictions on setting up in monaco, a business having the principality of monaco as tis context is not automatically taxed on profits; only some firms and compagnies, because ot the nature of their activity and the way profits are realized, are liable for monegasque tax. Nationality has no effect on monegasque corporation tax

In this thesis we will introduce multioperator weighted monadic datalog (mwmd), a formal model for specifying tree series, tree transformations, and tree languages. This model combines aspects of multioperator weighted tree automata (wmta), weighted monadic datalog (wmd), and monadic datalog tree transducers (mdtt). In order to develop a rich theory we will define multiple versions of semantics for mwmd and compare their expressiveness. We will study normal forms and decidability results of mwmd and show (by employing particular semantic domains) that the theory of mwmd subsumes the theory of both wmd and mdtt. We conclude this thesis by showing that mwmd even contain wmta as a syntactic subclass and present results concerning this subclass.

Abstract:

"Categorical term rewriting : monads and modularity." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/388.

Full text
Abstract:
Term rewriting systems are widely used throughout computer science as they provide an abstract model of computation while retaining a comparatively simple syntax and semantics. In order to reason within large term rewriting systems, structuring operations are used to build large term rewriting systems from smaller ones. Of particular interest is whether key properties are modular, that is, if the components of a structured term rewriting system satisfy a property, then does the term rewriting system as a whole? A body of literature addresses this problem, but most of the results and proofs depend on strong syntactic conditions and do not easily generalize. Although many specific modularity results are known, a coherent framework which explains the underlying principles behind these results is lacking. This thesis posits that part of the problem is the usual, concrete and syntax-oriented semantics of term rewriting systems, and that a semantics is needed which on the one hand elides unnecessary syntactic details but on the other hand still possesses enough expressive power to model the key concepts arising from the term structure, such as substitutions, layers, redexes etc. Drawing on the concepts of category theory, such a semantics is proposed, based on the concept of a monad, generalising the very elegant treatment of equational presentations in category theory. The theoretical basis of this work is the theory of enriched monads. It is shown how structuring operations are modelled on the level of monads, and that the semantics is compositional (it preserves the structuring operations). Modularity results can now be obtained directly at the level of combining monads without recourse to the syntax at all. As an application and demonstration of the usefulness of this approach, two modularity results for the disjoint union of two term rewriting systems are proven, the modularity of confluence (Toyama's theorem) and the modularity of strong normalization for a particular class of term rewriting systems (non-collapsing term rewriting systems). The proofs in the categorical setting provide a mild generalisation of these results.

This paper intends to construct and explain the monad from the ground up and show some example uses for it.

Abstract:
A constraint programming system combines two essential components: a constraint solver and a search engine. The constraint solver reasons about satisfiability of conjunctions of constraints, and the search engine controls the search for solutions by iteratively exploring a disjunctive search tree defined by the constraint program. The Monadic Constraint Programming framework gives a monadic definition of constraint programming where the solver is defined as a monad threaded through the monadic search tree. Search and search strategies can then be defined as firstclass objects that can themselves be built or extended by composable search transformers. Search transformers give a powerful and unifying approach to viewing search in constraint programming, and the resulting constraint programming system is first class and extremely flexible.

Jaskelioff, Mauro Javier. "Lifting of operations in modular monadic semantics." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2009. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11226/.

Full text
Abstract:
Monads have become a fundamental tool for structuring denotational semantics and programs by abstracting a wide variety of computational features such as side-effects, input/output, exceptions, continuations and non-determinism. In this setting, the notion of a monad is equipped with operations that allow programmers to manipulate these computational effects. For example, a monad for side-effects is equipped with operations for setting and reading the state, and a monad for exceptions is equipped with operations for throwing and handling exceptions. When several effects are involved, one can employ the incremental approach to mod- ular monadic semantics, which uses monad transformers to build up the desired monad one effect at a time. However, a limitation of this approach is that the effect-manipulating operations need to be manually lifted to the resulting monad, and consequently, the lifted operations are non-uniform. Moreover, the number of liftings needed in a system grows as the product of the number of monad transformers and operations involved. This dissertation proposes a theory of uniform lifting of operations that extends the incremental approach to modular monadic semantics with a principled technique for lifting operations. Moreover the theory is generalized from monads to monoids in a monoidal category, making it possible to apply it to structures other than monads. The extended theory is taken to practice with the implementation of a new extensible monad transformer library in Haskell, and with the use of modular monadic semantics to obtain modular operational semantics.

Cenciarelli, Pietro. "Computational applications of calculi based on monads." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/396.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies various manifestations of monads in the mathematics of computation and presents three applications of calculi based on monads. The view that monads provide abstract mathematical interpretations of computational phenomena led E. Moggi to use the internal language of a category with a strong monad, which he called the computational lambda calculus, for describing denotational semantics of programming languages. Moggi argued that models of complicated forms of computation could be described modularly by using semantic constructors for manipulating monads. For the first application, we describe a theory of exceptions in the computational lambda calculus and give a computationally adequate interpretation of a fragment of ML, including the exception handling mechanism, in models of this theory. To our knowledge no other model of ML exceptions is available in the literature to date. We also show that normalization fails when exceptions are added to the simply typed lambda calculus. Building on top of the computational lambda calculus, A.M. Pitts proposed a predicate calculus to reason about the evaluation properties of programs: the Evaluation Logic. Following the tenets of synthetic domain theory, we interpret this logic in an ambient category with set-like structure and a fully reflective subcategory of domains with a monad for interpreting computation. We establish abstract conditions under which the monad extends to the ambient category to ensure good interaction with the logical structure. We also show that a monad and first order logical structure yield suitable evaluation relations, which can be used to give a standard interpretation of Evaluation Logic when higher order structure is not available. For the second application, we focus on side effects and investigate the use of Evaluation Logic in partial correctness reasoning. We show that, under fairly common circumstances, monads for side effects admit an extension to the ambient category which is more natural than that described for arbitrary monads and we validate special axioms for members of this class. The resulting theory of computation with side effects is then put to work on a textbook example of partial correctness specification. For our third application, we consider Moggi's modular approach to denotational semantics. We develop the theory of this approach by determining which equations are preserved by a fairly general class of semantic constructors and which ones are reflected (conservativity). Moreover, we establish a correspondence between categories of computational models and categories of theories of the metalanguage, along the lines of Gabriel-Ulmer duality, in a type-theoretic framework. Using the Extended Calculus of Constructions, we develop a semantics for parallel composition by combining elementary notions of computation defined independently and we use LEGO to prove properties of such semantics formally.
