Abstract:
ISO19156 Observations and Measurements (O&M) provides a standardised framework for organising information about the collection of information about the environment. Here we describe the implementation of a specialisation of O&M for environmental data, the Metadata Objects for Linking Environmental Sciences (MOLES3).MOLES3 provides support for organising information about data, and for user navigation around data holdings. The implementation described here, “CEDA-MOLES”, also supports data management functions for the Centre for Environmental Data Archival, CEDA. The previous iteration of MOLES (MOLES2) saw active use over five years, being replaced by CEDA-MOLES in late 2014. During that period important lessons were learnt both about the information needed, as well as how to design and maintain the necessary information systems. In this paper we review the problems encountered in MOLES2; how and why CEDA-MOLES was developed and engineered; the migration of information holdings from MOLES2 to CEDA-MOLES; and, finally, provide an early assessment of MOLES3 (as implemented in CEDA-MOLES) and its limitations.Key drivers for the MOLES3 development included the necessity for improved data provenance, for further structured information to support ISO19115 discovery metadata export (for EU INSPIRE compliance), and to provide appropriate fixed landing pages for Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) in the presence of evolving datasets. Key lessons learned included the importance of minimising information structure in free text fields, and the necessity to support as much agility in the information infrastructure as possible without compromising on maintainability both by those using the systems internally and externally (e.g. citing in to the information infrastructure), and those responsible for the systems themselves. The migration itself needed to ensure continuity of service and traceability of archived assets.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In his Théorie de l’information et perception esthétique (1958), the sociologist of culture Abraham Moles (1920–92) set out to demonstrate the applicability of information theory—a mathematical linchpin of cybernetics—to the arts more generally. Moles drew on classical psychophysics, Gestalt psychology, more modern behavioral psychology, and contemporary psychoacoustic research to advocate a cybernetic model of the perception and creation of art. Moles repeatedly returned to musical examples therein to make his case, leveraging his dual expertise in philosophy and electroacoustics, drawing on formative experiences with Pierre Schaeffer in Paris and Hermann Scherchen at his Gravesano studio. Moles’s interdisciplinary text found many attentive readers across Europe and, following an English translation by the precocious Joel E. Cohen (1966), the Anglophone academic world, but it was valued more as an inspiration for the burgeoning area of “information aesthetics” than as a source of hard scientific evidence. Drawing lightly on positions in the history and philosophy of science articulated by Gaston Bachelard (who supervised Moles’s second PhD, in philosophy) and Hans-Jörg Rheinberger suggests a change of emphasis away from its apparent scientific infelicities and toward Moles’s use of sound-studio technique, which is described with reference to the technologies available to Moles in the years leading up to the publication of the Théorie. Moles manipulated and processed sound recordings—filtering, clipping, and reversing them—in his attempts to empirically estimate the relative proportions of semantic and aesthetic information in speech and music. Moles’s text, when understood in tandem with the traces of his practical experiments in the sound studio, appears as an influential and occasionally prescient exposition of the many possible applications of the principles of information theory to the production, perception, and consumption of sound culture that makes ready use of the latest technical innovations in the media environment of its time.

Abstract:
Subjects were 30 white men who denied that they were child molesters at the time of arrest and were court ordered to have a psychological evaluation as part of the pre-sentencing. The Multiphasic Sex Inventory was administered to the subjects during the initial interview and later in therapy sessions they did admit to the offense. When scores for the group were compared with scores for a pretreatment child-molester group ( n=140) in a study cited in the manual, the difference was significant on the Child Molest Lie Scale. Implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The object of this research comprehends a critical investigation of the specificities of the term site-specific, which has been appropriated from the English language and used internationally to describe works of art which find in their context a defining role. The goal of the research is to fold the implied concept over the word itself, or, to defend the idea that the expression sitespecific is a site-specific in itself. Its use in other contexts and languages should therefore undergo some sort of elaboration, or translation. Site-specificity is understood not solely as a subject, but also as a method to constitute the dissertation itself as a specific site, where it is possible to propose an artistic operation. Translation is understood as a poetic operation, more than an attempt to create a word in Portuguese which would be equivalent to site-specific in English. What is understood by a poetic operation is the creation of a relational and collaborative field of several authors, languages, ideas, concepts and images; including, through conceptual strategies, the reader as a constitutive element of the game proposed.

Abstract:
There exist contradictory perceptions of child molesters. Whereas the criminal justice system treats them as similar to other criminals the academic literature views them as victims of a pathological disorder emphasizing the need for treatment. A deeper exploration of the academic literature reinforces this distinction. Instead of researching and categorising the similarities or differences between child molesters and other criminal offenders the literature has implicitly accepted that no commonalities exist by postulating only variations within child sexual offenders. It is argued in this thesis that this constricted approach has missed existing communal characteristics between the groups. The thesis is proposed that child molesters should be viewed as exploitative and abusive individuals for whom sexual deviancy with a young vulnerable victim forms part of a diversity of symptoms demonstrating the way they relate to other individuals within society. This is in contrast to the academic literature which views him as an individual with only one distinguishing trait, an exclusive sexual motivation towards children. In order to explore this further all detected sexual offenses committed on children aged between 5-12 years for a three year period (1987-89) which were reported to the Lancashire Constabulary were compiled. Victim, offence, and offender details were then content analyzed for all 416 offenses, and evaluated using a number of statistical tests. The initial analysis did not support previous conceptual classifications that offenders could be distinguished by a sexual preference for children. Instead the offenses exhibited similarities to other criminal offenses which allowed their discrimination on a variety of criteria. These comprised: age and gender of victim; age and gender of offender, relationship of offender to the victim; type of offence and how it was committed; and the previous convictions and the antecedents of the offender. It was further hypothesized that offenders could further be discriminated as to their degree of invasiveness towards the victim. Ninety-seven of the offenses were then content analyzed over 59 variables relating specifically to offence behaviour. A multi-dimensional scaling procedure known as Smallest Space Analysis (Lingoes, 1973) revealed a faceted structure to child molestation behaviour, distinguishing offenders between levels of aggression and intimacy. The facet structure provided a model to test and confirm the social interactive model proposed by Canter, 1989. Using Chi-square analysis it was established that those who related to the child in the most abusive fashion were revealed to have distinct characteristics; the most exploitative offenders showed criminal recidivism and an inability to sustain relationships. In contrast the intimate, socially motivated offender, who demonstrated the most apparent empathy towards the victim had less criminal history, and a superior ability to form non-deviant relationships. It was hypothesized that a linear continuum relating to levels of abuse existed between these two extremes of offender behaviour. The ability to differentiate child sex offenses on a number of clearly defined offence behaviour criteria and to then ascribe offender characteristics was subjected to a field validation test. The subsequent profile was found accurate on all 22 variables in relation to an offender who indecently assaulted a number of pre-pubertal boys. Aggressively orientated behaviour was then described in terms of an "anti-social personality" whereby indiscriminate sexual deviancy appeared as just another symptom of impulsive criminal behaviour. In contrast "intimate orientated behaviour" was described in terms of relationship inadequacy. The continuum of behaviour between the two extremes was explained in terms of coercive and abusive behaviour explained within the parameters of a multi-disciplinary criminological model. In conclusion the theoretical benefits are discussed of a psychological framework which allows offenses to be understood in terms of observable criteria. Similarly the practical benefits for criminal investigation are also addressed.

Abstract:
Arnaut de Moles has painted the stained windows in Auch. Nobody knew anything about his country, his masters, neither when he died. M. Paul Raymond, an archivist in Pau, has identified a painter named Arnaut de Moles, living in Saint-Sever (Landes), who died before 1521. Namesakes have been recorded beyond 1650 with a high proportion of painters or glass painters (1/8), so that it indicated a very large dynasty, proceeding from fathers to sons or nephews, or even cousins. A statistical study has allowed to determine the number of active workshops in Gascony during the XVIth century and what they achieved. A survey of stained glass (200 photos) in that area has revealed three other spots with Arnaut's signature : Cahuzac, Fleurance, Lombez. Conversely, undue ascriptions, such as Martel, have been discarded. 100 photographs covering most of the stained glass windows created in France between 1490 and 1510, show up that Arnaut de Moles has never found any significant model among contemporary glass painters. Jean Marre, a subsidiary to the archbishop, has conceived the pro, gram. He has discovered the talented youth and he sent him in 1496 via Avignon to Mantegna, then, the prince of painters. Arnaut studied in Mantova and Padova, and very little in Firenza. He had no opportunity to see Roma. Jean Marre had been appointed bishop in condom, Auch building subsided. Arnaut executed minor jobs in Bayonne (1500), he then worked in Lombez. Later (1506-1513), he performed his masterwork in Auch and finally in Fleurance. He is famed as the “maitre de Condom” and he would supervise all glass works from Bordeaux up to Toulouse. F. De Clermont-Lodève, Auch archbishop, who was considered as the father of the whole, has, in fact, never participated in the achievement of that most famous work, which should allow Arnaut de moles to be registered among the best French painters

This research has had as its aim to analyze the religious Moleque s Fest which takes place in the rural area of Vão do Moleque in September. This area is part of a community living in Kalunga Historical Site, which is located in the Northern region of Goiás State, near the municipalities of Cavalcante and Terezina de Goiás. This community has traditionally celebrated religious festivities all over the region, these are followed by a calendar in which many saints are honored. In this study we have come up with the hypothesis that the tradition of Moleque s Fest is constituted in a meaningful space of creation and preservation of the identity of Kalunga living in Moleque. This group, historically, has been struggling to guarantee their rights, for instance, land tenure and education. In addition, through the fest, they try to preserve their cultural and religious traditions and customs. Thus, we can consider that the festivity contributes to collective organization and ethnical identity preservation of the local population.

Plant volatiles are a promising technique to attract G. molesta under mating disruption conditions. In my thesis I have characterized the response of olfactory receptor neurons (ORN) to pheromone and plant odors by means of single-sensillum electrophisiology. I then used this information to determine that a previously reported pheromone-plant synergism does not result from pheromone-plant interactions at the ORN level. I have compared several plant volatile blends previously tested in Australia and China, and have found that none of them attracted moths in the field, but they synergized pheromone responses in the laboratory. Finally, I investigated the role of plant blends and alcohols on the response to unnatural pheromone blend ratios or overdosed pheromone concentrations. With these studies we hopefully advanced on basic and applied aspects of the olfactory neuroethology of this species.

Winship, Jacqueline Ruth. "Cursed : constructing the experience of the Catholic clergy child molester." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/28963.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis constructs the experience of a group of Catholic clergy child molesters, each of whom had sexually molested a child/children aged thirteen years or younger. The specific focus was on understanding the subjective experience of sexual desire for a child among Catholic clergy child molesters. The broader purpose was to gain a greater understanding of the factors implicated in clergy child molestation. It was hoped that this might contribute to prevention and treatment programs and hence, ultimately, to fewer victims. Charmaz's (2006) constructivist grounded theory was utilised as the methodology for the study. This approach focuses on the interpretive aspects of grounded theory and is underpinned by the belief that theories are constructed from data rather than simply discovered. Thus the aim was to construct an interpretive understanding of the meaning participants made of their subjective experience. In depth interviews were conducted with each of the 12 purposively selected participants. These interviews were analysed using grounded theory coding procedures. Increasingly abstract levels of coding led to the construction of two theoretical categories - "Cursed Desire" and "Cursed Identity" - which were integrated into the core theoretical code "Cursed". This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a unique focus on the subjective experience of molesters. A tentative theory is proposed in order to account for the experience of the participants at an abstract level. This theory is influenced by Ussher's (2000) Material-Discursive-lntrapsychic model. It proposes relationships between the prevailing socio-cultural discourses as well as intrapsychic and material factors identified as relevant by the participants. These relationships result not only in the sexual desire for a child but also in the interpretation of this desire as deviant and in an ensuing burdened identity, leading to the overall experience of the participants of being "cursed".

ABSTRACT: There are several problems associated with the construction of embankments on soft soil. These relate, on one hand, with the stability of the landfill in the short term and, on the other hand, with the slow dissipation of the excess pore pressure generated. The behavior of embankments on soft soil was studied. It is common that these embankments need to be reinforced on the base, which must be designed in an appropriate way. Moreover, it is important for the stability of embankments on soft soils to consider the issue of consolidation, which in many cases needs to be accelerated. In this work some methods for the design of the reinforcement of the base of embankments built on soft soils are presented and some are applied to a case study. Some oedometer tests were carried out, to characterize the soft soil considered. To study the consolidation of the soil, after the construction of the embankment, traditional methods were used. Finally, the numerical modeling of the studied problem and of the solution implemented were carried out wing finite element analysis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Methanol oxidation has been modeled using the Rate-Controlled Constrained-Equilibrium method (RCCE). In this method, composition of the system is determined by constraints rather than by species. Since the number of constraints can be much smaller than the number of species present, the number of rate equations required to describe the time evolution of the system can be considerably reduced. In the present paper, C1 chemistry with 29 species and 140 reactions has been used to investigate the oxidation of stoichiometric methanol/oxygen mixture at constant energy and volume. Three fixed elemental constraints: elemental carbon, elemental oxygen and elemental hydrogen and from one to nine variable constraints: moles of fuel, total number of moles, moles of free oxygen, moles of free oxygen, moles of free valence, moles of fuel radical, moles of formaldehyde H2CO, moles of HCO, moles of CO and moles of CH3O were used. The four to twelve rate equations for the constraint potentials (LaGrange multipliers conjugate to the constraints) were integrated for a wide range of initial temperatures and pressures. As expected, the RCCE calculations gave correct equilibrium values in all cases. Only 8 constraints were required to give reasonable agreement with detailed calculations. Results of using 9 constraints showed compared very well to those of the detailed calculations at all conditions. For this system, ignition delay times and major species concentrations were within 0.5% to 5% of the values given by detailed calculations. Adding up to 12 constraints improved the accuracy of the minor species mole fractions at early times, but only had a little effect on the ignition delay times. RCCE calculations reduced the time required for input and output of data in 25% and 10% when using 8 and 9 constraints respectively. In addition, RCCE calculations gave valuable insight into the important reaction paths and rate-limiting reactions involved in methanol oxidation.

Abstract:
The Rate-Controlled Constrained-Equilibrium method (RCCE) is a powerful technique for simplifying the treatment of chemical reactions in complex systems. The method is based on the assumption that slow chemical reactions impose constraints on the allowed composition of such systems. Since the number of constraints can be very much smaller than the number of species, the number of rate equations to be integrated can be considerably reduced. In the present work, a kinetic scheme with 55 species and 366 reactions has been used to investigate stoichiometric Ethanol-oxygen mixture in a constant energy constant volume chamber. The state of the system was determined by three fixed elemental constraints: elemental carbon, elemental oxygen and elemental hydrogen and six variable constraints: moles of fuel, moles of fuel radicals, total number of moles, moles of free valence, moles of free oxygen, moles of OH+O+H. The 9 rate equations for the constraint potentials (LaGrange multipliers associated with the constraints) were integrated over a range of 1400 K-1700 K for initial temperature and 1atm-10atm for initial pressure. The RCCE calculations were in good agreement with detailed calculations and were faster than detailed calculations, which required integration of 55 species rate equations.

Nachtrieb, Julie. Field site analysis of giant salvinia nitrogen content and salvinia weevil density. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42060.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2012, a giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell) biological control project was initiated in Louisiana. Although similar quantities of salvinia weevils (Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands) were released at all sites, weevil densities were highly variable among sites. Additionally, signs of plant nitrogen depletion (yellowing plants) were observed at some sites. Because it is well known that plant nutrition can affect the success of a biocontrol agent because of slowed development and/or reduced fecundity, the correlation between giant salvinia nitrogen content and Salvinia weevil density was investigated during the growing seasons of the second and fourth years. During 2013, weevils were reintroduced to sites, and the magnitude of adult weevil density increase varied by site. Giant salvinia nitrogen content varied among sites and sampling dates. Upper Big Break plants had greater nitrogen than all other sites during 75% of sampling dates. Additionally, adult and larval densities were significantly correlated to plant nitrogen content. During 2015, trends were less distinct and weevil densities and nitrogen content varied based on the interaction between sampling date and site, but a significant correlation was not detected. Results from 1-yr of a 2-yr study confirmed published reports of the importance of plant nitrogen content to salvinia weevil productivity. Additional studies are warranted to evaluate and understand the role of nitrogen at giant salvinia biocontrol field sites.

Mudge, Christopher R., Kurt D. Getsinger, and Benjamin P. Sperry. Simulated Herbicide Spray Retention on Floating Aquatic Plants as Affected by Carrier Volume and Adjuvant Type. U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/44540.

Full text
Abstract:
Foliar delivery of herbicides is a common means for plant management in aquatic environments. Though this technique is decades old, little is known about vegetative spray retention relative to this application method. A more complete understanding of maximizing herbicide retention could lead to improved plant management while simultaneously decreasing pesticide load in aquatic environments. Therefore, outdoor mesocosm experiments were conducted in 2020 to evaluate the effect of adjuvant type on foliar spray retention in waterhyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms]. Additionally, the effect of carrier volume on spray retention in waterhyacinth, waterlettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.), and giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell) was documented. Spray deposition did not differ among the nine adjuvants tested; however, spray retention was reduced 6% to 11% when an adjuvant was excluded from the spray solution. The effect of carrier volume on spray retention in waterhyacinth, waterlettuce, and giant salvinia was also investigated. Decreases in spray retention were most sensitive to increased carrier volume in waterhyacinth, followed by giant salvinia and waterlettuce. Among species, spray retention potential, as determined by intercept estimates, was greatest in waterlettuce and giant salvinia regardless of carrier volume. Asymptotes estimates for waterhyacinth, waterlettuce, and giant salvinia were 33%, 46%, and 79% spray retention, respectively. In other words, spray retention was the lowest and remained relatively constant at these values for the high carrier volumes tested (935 and 1,870 L ha⁻¹), which were likely due to the presence of pubescence on leaves and flatter leaf architecture represented by waterlettuce and giant salvinia compared to the glabrous vertical leaves of waterhyacinth. Future research will evaluate these concepts under field condition.
