Wolbarst, Anthony, and Nathan Yanasak. An Introduction to MRI. Medical Physics Publishing, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.54947/9781930524200.

Full text
Abstract:
This introduction to the science and technology of MRI has been written at the beginning graduate level primarily for professional medical physicists and engineers in training. Others, such as physicians with physical science backgrounds, may well also find it to be of interest. From Devon Godfrey in Medical Physics International… "The authors manage to successfully take the reader on a journey from the discovery and fundamentals of NMR all the way to novel k-space sampling and advanced MR imaging sequences—and their underlying molecular physics—in a manner that is quite thorough, yet should be approachable even to a reader with limited prior MRI knowledge. I believe this will be an excellent source for graduate students and professionals alike, and intend to incorporate it into my own teaching." From Andrew Maidment in Medical Physics…"As with all of Wolbarst’s books, the figures are of high quality, and I am sure they will find their way into many PowerPoint presentations in the future." This book will help readers understand not just the basics of MRI, but how recent variations on its original implementation have produced the many alternative interpretations of data that have made MRI such a powerful diagnostic tool. Several more advanced topics—like Fourier analysis, k-space, and statistical distributions—are introduced as they are needed.

Abstract:
In the past 50 years, classification systems for renal neoplasms have become increasingly complex as distinctive morphologic patterns in renal neoplasms have been recognized and correlated with clinical findings. In addition to classic histopatology, more sophisticated diagnostic tools, including electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostic techniques have greatly influenced distinctions between various types of renal neoplasms. The current World Health Organization classification of renal neoplasms encompasses nearly 50 distinctive renal neoplasms categorized as malignant or benign tumours. These categories have been expanded during recent years to incorporate newer histotypes, thus suggesting that the next revision of this classification will incorporate some recently recognized entities. In this chapter, we examine clinicopathologic and genetic features of the renal tumours most often seen in clinical practice.

Engel, Paul. Enzymes: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198824985.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Enzymes: A Very Short Introduction explores enzymes, the tiny molecular machines that make life possible. These proteins speed up chemical reactions inside a living organism many millionfold. Working together, teams of enzymes carry out all the processes that can be collectively recognized as life, from making DNA to digesting food. This VSI explains how this works, before going on to reveal how these catalysts of such extraordinary power and exquisite selectivity have evolved. It also examines the many varied ways in which individual enzymes are used nowadays as tools—in medical diagnosis and therapy, washing powders, food production, waste treatment, and chemical synthesis. New vistas have opened up through application of molecular genetics, not only allowing cheap, large-scale production of pure enzymes but also making possible new, tailor-made enzymes.

Abstract:
Surveillance and outbreak investigations are important epidemiological tools for assessing the frequency, distribution, and determinants of infections. The primary goal of these activities is to identify measures to reduce the burden of disease. This chapter describes examples of surveillance and approaches to outbreak investigations that have formed the basis of fungal infection control measures. However, considerable knowledge gaps exist, new threats are emerging (including antifungal resistance), and healthcare advances are making more people susceptible to severe fungal infections. Expanded surveillance efforts, timely outbreak detection, and effective outbreak investigations are needed to further reduce the burden of fungal infections. This will require confronting challenges that have held back fungal disease epidemiology, including limited clinical suspicion of fungal infections by clinical providers, difficulties in diagnosing fungal infections due to suboptimal diagnostic methods, limited availability of antifungal susceptibility testing and molecular subtyping, and a lack of mandated fungal disease surveillance in most countries.

Abstract:
Bioscience has progressed exponentially, in scientific advances and enabling technology. From quicker and much cheaper gene sequencing to the emergence of data-mining tools, the last 20 years has been unprecedented in exploitable advances brought by research. We have the tools and insights to trace disease from underlying genetics and epigenetics, through proteins that represent intervention options, to ways to create molecules, diagnostics, and devices based on those insights. The life sciences enterprise, once largely confined to Europe, the USA, and Japan, is now seeing major investment from emerging economies. We should be poised to reap the benefits of this rising tide of research with lives transformed and health systems revolutionized. However, the two million biological science papers published annully results in about 14 000 patents, only 5000 drugs in the pipeline, and a mere 30 or so actual medicines. Translation of life sciences research into usable products is hugely inefficient.

Abstract:
Crystallography is the major method of determining structures of biological macromolecules yet crystallization techniques are still regarded as difficult to perform. This new edition of Crystallization of Nucleic Acids and Proteins: A Practical Approach continues in the vein of the first edition by providing a detailed and rational guide to producing crystals of proteins and nucleic acids of sufficient quantity and quality for diffraction studies. It has been thoroughly updated to include all the major new techniques such as the uses of molecular biology in structural biology (maximizing expression systems, sequence modifications to enable crystallization, and the introduction of anomalous scatterers); diagnostic analysis of prenucleation and nucleation by spectroscopic methods; and the two- dimensional electron crystallography of soluble proteins on planar lipid films. As well as an introduction to crystallogenesis, the other topics covered are: Handling macromolecular solutions, experimental design, seeding, proceeding from solutions to crystals Crystallization in gels Crystallization of nucleic acid complexes and membrane proteins Soaking techniques Preliminary characterization of crystals in order to tell whether they are suitable for diffraction studies. As with all Practical Approach books the protocols have been written by experienced researchers and are tried an tested methods. The underlying theory is brought together with the laboratory protocols to provide researchers with the conceptual and methodological tools necessary to exploit these powerful techniques. Crystallization of Nucleic Acids and Proteins: A Practical Approach 2e will be an invaluable manual of practical crystallization methods to researchers in molecular biology, crystallography, protein engineering, and biological chemistry.

Torgerson,, Paul R., C. N. L. Macpherson, and D. A. Vuitton. Cystic echinococcosis. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0060.

Full text
Abstract:
Cystic echinococcosis (CE)\cystic hydatid disease is one of the most widespread and important global helminth zoonoses. The parasite Echinococcus granulosus is maintained in a wide spectrum of intermediate hosts, including sheep, goats, camels, cattle, pigs and equines. A number of wild intermediate hosts occur, including cervids in the northern part of the North American continent and Eurasia, marsupials in Australia and wild herbivores in East and southern Africa. The application of a range of molecular techniques to the characterization of the parasite has confirmed the existence of mostly host-adapted strains and genotypes of the parasite and several new species have been proposed. The ubiquitous domestic dog serves as the most important definitive host for the transmission of the parasite throughout its wide geographical range.A wide range of diagnostic techniques, including necropsy, arecoline purgation, coproantigen ELISA and DNA based tests are available for detecting E. granulosus infection in the definitive host. In intermediate animal hosts, diagnosis at post mortem still remains the most reliable option. In humans, imaging techniques including ultrasound, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or computer aided tomography (CAT-scan provide not only a method of diagnosis but also reveal important clinical information on the location, condition, number and size of the hydatid cysts in man. Of these ultrasound is the most widely used diagnostic technique and is the only imaging technique for screening of populations in rural areas, where the disease is most common. A classification system has been developed which can be used to assess the likely development of a cyst and hence guide the clinician in treatment options for the patient. Treatment relies on surgery and/or percutaneous interventions, especially ‘Puncture, Aspiration, Injection, Re-aspiration’ (PAIR) and/or antiparasitic treatment with albendazole (and alternatively mebendazole).CE is largely a preventable disease. Successful elimination programmes have focused on frequent periodic treatments of dogs with anthelmintics and the control of slaughter of domestic livestock. In many regions elimination or even control remains a problem as the parasite is endemic over vast areas of low income countries where there may be limited resources for control. In some areas, such as former communist administered countries, the parasite is resurgent. New tools are becoming available to control the parasite, including a highly effective vaccine in sheep which prevents the infection in sheep and breaks the transmission cycle. In addition cost effective methods are being developed which may be appropriate in low income countries where financial resources are not available for intensive control programmes that have been successful in high income countries.

Abstract:
In the last few years, major advances have been achieved in the understanding of the molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms which underlie the complex interactions between the heart and the kidney, as well as between the heart and the liver. According to these new insights, new biomarkers have been proposed for better evaluating and monitoring patients affected by cardiovascular diseases. In addition, some biomarkers should be used as risk factors and for an early identification and treatment of these severe diseases. This chapter reviews the most important biomarkers for evaluating the ‘cardiorenal syndrome’, in particular, the measurement of serum creatinine and its use for calculating the glomerular filtration rate which, with the new and more efficient equation, namely Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration, still remains the most widely used biomarker. The role of newer biomarkers will be explored. The measurement of cystatin C, representing additional information, particularly in paediatric age groups and in the early phase of kidney disease, plays an increasing role. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin is a recently developed and very promising new biomarker for the diagnosis of acute kidney injury, while the well-known albumin/creatinine ratio has been re-evaluated as a simple and useful tool for an early identification of kidney disease. Regarding liver diseases, a growing body of evidence demonstrates the usefulness of non-invasive makers of hepatic fibrosis that may avoid the need for a liver biopsy in most patients. A promising field of research is represented by the role of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.
