Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this research is to shed light on the role the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research (MoHE) plays in private Jordanian universities (PJUs). Private universities in developing countries struggle with their financial resources. There is an argument that a decision to adopt a new approach for the financing and management of Jordanian higher education (HE) has been taken because both funding and ownership belong to private sources. However, the MoHE plays a role in the Jordanian context. Design/methodology/approach – This study explains the relations between the MoHE and PJUs and describes the PJUs’ managerial context. It is based on the prior research related to HE and budgeting. A total of 16 budget preparers at 11 universities and a further three in the MoHE were interviewed. The research also uses observation to obtain direct knowledge of the research phenomena. It uses archival documents, guidelines and reports to accomplish the study’s objective. Findings – This research presents an overview for private HE across the world with particular concentration being paid to the role of the MoHE in PJUs by presenting the regulations and laws related to HE in Jordan. It proves that the MoHE uses a budgeting formula to significantly increase its control over the private HE sector. Simultaneously, no government subsidies or tax exemptions (such as those given to public universities) have been made available to private universities. The results indicate that the MoHE controls the private universities by using accreditation tools, such as their budgets. Originality/value – Jordan has a unique situation in terms of the relationship between its MoHE and Jordanian universities.

Abstract:
The Ministry of Health and Environment (MoHE) of the Commonwealth of Dominica identified the need for a knowledge management strategy to advance the country’s national health agenda. The Pan American Health Organization and the MoHE conducted a rapid situation analysis of knowledge management in July 2015. The findings, analysis, and recommendations were developed jointly with a core team of the MoHE within the context of the strategic plan for health, “Investing in Health – Building a Safer Future.” The situation analysis described the overall status of the understanding and implementation of information and knowledge management activities, projects, products, and practices. The analysis also aimed to identify what critical knowledge is needed to support overall organizational goals and individual and team activities. The MoHE expects patient outcomes and quality of care to improve as a result of having a knowledge management strategy that boosts the Ministry’s efficiency and productivity.

Abstract:
Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) Lam belongs to the family Moringaceae. It is an important multipurpose tree that is largely distributed globally and has been used almost in every aspect of traditional medicine for the treatment of various illnesses including cancers, diabetes mellitus, asthma, arthritis, etc. This study investigated the effects of oral acute and sub-acute administration of M. oleifera hydroethanolic leaf extract (MOHE) in ICR-mice. Its major phenolic compounds were also determined. Ten (10) female, 8-week old mice were grouped into control and treatment groups for acute toxicity study. A dose of 2000 mg/kg MOHE was given once to the treatment group via oral gavage. However, for the sub-acute toxicity study, 25 mice were grouped into groups A (control), B (125 mg/kg), C (250 mg/kg), D (500 mg/kg) and E (1000 mg/kg). MOHE was given via oral gavage to groups B, C, D and E daily for 28 days. Group A received only distilled water. The mice were sacrificed at the end of the experiments and samples were collected for evaluation. The results of the chemical profiling of MOHE revealed the presence of glucomoringin, niaziminine, quercetin and kaempferol as the major compounds. The treated mice in the acute toxicity study were slightly anaemic and showed evidence of stress leukogram. Moreover, a slight increase in creatinine, significant increases in AST and CK, hepatic degeneration and necrosis, none-obstructive sinusoidal dilatation, renal tubular necrosis, interstitial nephritis and renal interstitial oedema were observed. It is concluded that the LD50 of MOHE is higher than 2000 mg/kg. However, oral administration of MOHE causes acute mild anaemia and moderate hepato-nephrotoxicity in ICR-mice. Its major phenolic compounds are glucomoringin, niaziminine, quercetin and kaempferol.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the history of the Russian Far East in the Middle Ages. This period begins with the spread of the Mohe tribes in Primorye and Amur region. The most important of them were Heishui (Amur) Mohe and Sumo Mohe. The Sumo Mohe created the Bohai state in 698. It was the first early state on this territory. The Bohais had towns, a developed culture. On the territory of Primorye, the most famous site is the Kraskino town. In 926, the Bohai were conquered by the Khitan, who created a subordinate territory as a vassal state. From the 10th century there where Jurchens appear. They created the Golden (Jin) Empire in 1115. The empire included almost all of Northern China, Primorye and Amur region. The Jurchens had a large culture, they built cities, and had their own written language. More than a hundred cities and fortresses existed on the territory of Primorye alone. At the beginning of the 13th century during the Mongol invasion of Jin, a buffer Jurchen of the Eastern Xia states (1215—1233) was created on the territory of Primorye. After the death of the Jin Empire, these lands gradually fell into desolation.

Abstract:
Abstract. Mohe County, northernmost China, is one of the densely populated areas in permafrost regions. The urban population has grown from about 25 000 residents in 1992 to more than 41 000 in 2011. Resident's life is closely related to permafrost environment. This paper adopted drilling, ground penetration radar, and ground temperature monitoring to investigate the permafrost in the urban area of Mohe County. The results show that the permafrost table is much lower in the urban area of Mohe County because of the urban heat island, surface disturbance of construction, space heating in winter etc. The permafrost table is 2.63–3.70 m on the edge of the urban area; the mean annual ground temperature is −1.0 to −1.33 °C. In the urban area, the maximum depth of permafrost has exceeded 15 m. The permafrost in the undisturbed area is 1.65–2.0 m, with much lower ground temperature −2.75 °C. Evidences outline a clear distribution rule that, from the edge to the center of the urban area of Mohe County, the permafrost table goes deeper and deeper, which states that the urbanization has significant influence on permafrost degradation. The degradation of permafrost in the urban area in turn has been affecting the residents' lives, such as water supply and stability of buildings.

Abstract:
The crude oil pipeline from MoHe to DaQing (hereafter called Mo-Da pipeline) is part of China-Russia oil pipeline. Mo-Da pipeline is the first pipeline that through high latitude cold regions of China. The pipeline is in so complicated geography environment that many kinds of permafrost hazard are easily to happen including frost heave, thaw settlement, slope instabilities, and collapse and so on. The pipeline and the permafrost act and react upon one another. On one hand, soil frost heave and thaw settlement can produce extra stresses on pipe walls, which may result in centralized stresses and plastic deformations under certain conditions, even causes pipeline faults. On the other hand, buried pipeline will disturb ambient environment and then degrade the permafrost soil and finally impact safety of the pipeline. This paper mainly introduces the permafrost hazards of Mo-Da pipeline and demonstrates some methods for monitoring the influence of permafrost.

Webb, Justin. "Physical activity behaviour change : supporting cancer survivors to move more." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/850020/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is presented in five chapters. Chapter one offers a review of the literature, divided into six sections. The first section of this chapter provides an understanding of cancer as a disease and a public health concern, including detail on its incidence and prevalence, the biology of cancer and its treatment. The second section of this chapter reviews the literature on physical activity and cancer across the cancer continuum, from prevention of cancer, through cancer treatment, living with or beyond cancer, advanced cancer, and detail on physical activity and cancer mortality and recurrence. The third section of this chapter discusses the determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors, framed within behavioural theories and models to support the identification of intervention opportunities. The identified intervention opportunities are covered in the fourth section. The fifth section of this chapter presents the scope and relevance of the research included in this thesis. The sixth section provides a summary of chapter one. Chapter two presents the first study included within this thesis, a service evaluation investigating the reach, adoption, and impact of a training intervention to influence UK healthcare professionals to give very brief advice on physical activity to cancer survivors. This study also includes an assessment of the predictive value of the behavioural theory upon which the intervention is based, the COM-B model of behaviour (Michie, van Stralen, & West, 2011). Chapter two includes four sections covering an introduction, the method, results, and discussion. Chapter three presents the second study within this thesis. The second study is a randomised waiting list control trial to investigate the impacts of a remote-print based intervention supported by Internet-based tools on the physical activity, self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of cancer survivors. The randomised waiting list control trial also includes a cost-consequence analysis. Chapter four presents the third study of this thesis, a process evaluation of the remote-print based intervention supported by Internet-based tools. This process evaluation aimed to contextualise use and perceived usefulness of the intervention, supporting the identification of what works and for whom. Chapter five then closes this thesis with a discussion on the theoretical and practical contributions of the body of research as a whole. This final chapter also includes discussion on how the interventions under assessment influence the identified determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors, and identification of future research possibilities.

Abstract:
Gravity plays a vital role in our everyday lives. It provides the development of our muscle mass which fuels our brain’s advancement and our ability to complete daily tasks. Yet we often take for granted the things we do not see. From hunting and gathering, chasing after prey, migrating from one place to the next, to growing and harvesting crops to long hours laboring away, we have felt gravity through millions of years in time.  Along with the rise of technology, we are witnessing the fall of our physical selves. Our lives have become busier, more stressful and our days behind a screen much longer. Within the past 30 years, gravity has been intercepted by the chair and the ratio of moving to sitting has been reversed. Instead of feeling this force within our legs and lower limbs, it has now been deferred to our fingers, buttocks and backs.  We spend the bulk of our days in a seated position, often behind a screen. Sitting has become such a norm that daily exercise at the gym is no longer enough to offset all the negative things done to our bodies in a sedentary posture.  We were programmed to move, but we’ve hacked our brains to think otherwise. Prolonged sitting is a serious issue that should not be overlooked. The challenge is to change a habit that we’ve acquired from an early age.  The numbers are staggering, over 1.5 billion people worldwide are obese.(WHO. int, 2013) 5.3 million die each year from heart related diseases and diabetes as indirect result of the chair, .3 million more than smoking. (Thelancet.com, 2012)  It is time to break the norm, adjust our perceptions, expectations and stop living in extremes and move towards moderation. It’s time to stand up and make gravity visible.  10/60: Make Gravity Visible is a social movement to challenge our society to move more, reminding people to be up and moving 10 minutes for every 60 minutes.  The goal is to challenge society to integrate movement within the home, work and societal environments through the support and influence of communal behaviour.  10/60 is facilitated by a website and a smartphone application. The website provides ideas shared by the community to help inspire movement into people’s lives. The app tracks a person’s daily physical activity levels and sends a reminder when he/she has been sitting for too long. How much a person moves is reflected by an avatar’s physical state as well as graphical data by the time of day. Challenges can be submitted within the inner circle of friends to encourage more movement.  The initial strategy around this topic was through the intersections of four subjects: human evolution, philosophy, behavioral psychology, and physiology. This concept was developed based on findings from foundational research, expert interviews, user tests, experiments and behavioral observations - in particular social influences and the underlying principle that motivation is different for everyone.  Awareness alone does not generate action. Motivating people to move more is beyond an individual problem - sitting is a societal and cultural issue and unless that is addressed, no long term changes can be sustained.  This project aims to inspire people to leverage their communities and integrate more physical activity in the home, work and societal environments.  Societal and cultural norms will not change unless we change together.

Zhao, Can. "Mode-of-action of PAF26 and the discovery of more active and stable cyclic PAF26 derivatives." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23637.

Full text
Abstract:
The significance of fungal infections has been grossly underestimated. Only a few drugs are clinically available to treat life-threatening fungal infections, and resistance against these drugs is rising. Antifungal peptides (AFPs) are being actively explored as novel pharmaceuticals. PAF26 is a de novo designed hexapeptide possessing N-terminal cationic and C-terminal hydrophobic regions. Previously the roles of each of these motifs in the antifungal mode-of-action of PAF26 have indicated that it involves three stages: interaction with the plasma membrane, internalisation, and cell killing. The overall aim of my project was to obtain further insights into its mode-of-action and develop more active antifungal derivatives of PAF26. Three experimental fungal systems were used in this study: the model Neurospora crassa, the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus and the plant/human pathogen Fusarium oxysporum. The first objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of different fluorescent labels on the intracellular localisation and antifungal properties of PAF26. For this purpose a library of PAF26 labelled with 13 different fluorophores was synthesised. This library contained PAF26 conjugates of broad chemical and spectral diversity. These fluorescent PAF26 conjugates were analysed by live-cell imaging and tested for their antifungal activities. The different fluorescent labels were found to have significant impacts both on intracellular localisation and antifungal activities. TMR, carboxyfluorescein, NBD and DMN were found to be the best labels for live-cell imaging because they had the least influence on the intracellular localisation and antifungal activity of PAF26. The second objective was to identify target proteins of PAF26 in N. crassa cells. A large number of proteins were identified as binding to PAF26 from a protein pull-down and mass spectroscopy analysis using TMR- and fluorescein-labelled PAF26. One of these proteins was the highly abundant plasma membrane ATPase PMA-1. An in-silico analysis showed that PMA-1 is likely to be a major target protein of PAF26. The final objective was to develop novel antifungals based on PAF26 with improved activities and stability. Novel cyclic derivatives of PAF26 were designed in-silico against PMA-1. These peptides were synthesised and tested against N. crassa, A. fumigatus and F. oxysporum and were found to have higher activities (at the sub-micromolar level) and greater stability than the linear PAF26. Overall this study has provided novel mechanistic insights into the mode-of-action of PAF26 and discovered novel highly active antifungal peptides with clinical potential as therapeutics.

Abstract:
The aim of this work was to detect Listeria monocytogenes added in milk, after selective enrichment period, by PCR technique. A PCR technique using the primers LM1/LM2 and a multiplex PCR with IAP1/IAP2 e LMA/LMB was standardized. The conventional method of L. monocytogenes detection was compared from milk samples with different bacterial count added with various L. monocytogenes concentrations. The DNA extraction methods using phenolchloroform and thermal split were compared. The DNA extraction and the conventional methods showed the same result in detecting the bacterium in samples of sterilized milk. In milk samples with any initial contamination, the conventional methodology was sensitive and PCR from enrichment broth can not detect L. monocytogenes added, independently of the extraction method used. The identification time of L. monocytogenes decreased using the DNA extraction by the strain split method using suspect colonies that grew in Oxford and PALCAM, in substitution of identification phenotypes tests

Abstract:
In 2002, the Brazilian government implemmented the Normative Instruction 51 (IN-51) establishing an important step to improve milk quality in this country. According to the patterns required by the IN-51, this study was conducted with 183 samples of raw milk collected from different properties, during the summer of 2006, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The evaluated milk was produced in properties regulated by the state inspection service and the parameters used were from this national legislation: total bacterial count, somatic cell count, milk composition (fat, protein, total solids, lactose and solids non fat), freezing point and qualitative tests for detection of inhibitory substances in milk. Questionnaires containing questions about hygienic and production practices were filled out during interviews with the producers. It was verified that the main disagreement with the IN-51 patterns was total bacterial count. The conclusion of the study is that poor hygienic practices during milking and low level of technical informations were the major problem for milk quality

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the impacts of Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 on the continuing professional development training (CPDT), demanding lecturers/teachers to acquire knowledge of instructional design and information and communications technology (ICT). IR 4.0, often referred to as Education 4.0, requires universities to upgrade their CPDT that can enhance ICT skills of lecturers/teachers as well as students. The Ministries of Education (MOEs) and Ministries of Higher Education (MOHE) among ASEAN countries need to share their initiatives to help produce effective digital citizens. The quality of students depends on the quality of lecturers/teachers trained in CPDT. CPDT should be carefully redesigned to encourage more lecturers to enhance their student learning as well as engagement through ICT integration. Guidelines of redesigning CPDT are provided to redesign better and effective CPDT in the future. It is hoped that lecturers can increase their teaching effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity through continuous successful exposure of ID knowledge, skills, and ICT integration.

Abstract:
In the tenth century Tendai and Shingon School monks adopted and modified six types of Guanyin found in early Chinese texts, especially Mohe zhiguan, into a cult in Japan. As the monks promoted the constellation of these images as particularly efficacious, sculpture sets were installed at temples in the capital. Many of the main sites that housed Six Kannon images in the Heian period (794–1185) are gone and known only through records, such as the Kyoto temples Hosshōji and Hōjōji. However, rare early vestiges of former sets from this period are found in sculptures from Buzaiin in Ishikawa and Konkaikōmyōji in Kyoto. Evidence for early Japanese images of Six Kannon and their records, such as iconographic manuals, diaries, and chronicles, demonstrate the wide extent of the cult and its images that flourished under elite patronage in the Heian period.
