Abstract:
Abstract. The quality of the calibrated radiances of the medium-resolution Imaging Infrared Radiometer (IIR) on-board the CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) satellite is quantitatively evaluated from the beginning of the mission in June 2006. Two complementary relative and stand-alone approaches are used, which are related to comparisons of measured brightness temperatures and to model-to-observations comparisons, respectively. In both cases, IIR channels 1 (8.65 µm), 2 (10.6 µm), and 3 (12.05 µm) are paired with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)/Aqua Collection 5 companion channels 29, 31, and 32, respectively, as well as with the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI)/Meteosat companion channels IR8.7, IR10.8, and IR12, respectively. These pairs were selected before launch to meet radiometric, geometric, and space-time constraints. The prelaunch studies were based on simulations and sensitivity studies using the 4A/OP radiative transfer model and the more than 2300 atmospheres of the climatological Thermodynamic Initial Guess Retrieval (TIGR) input dataset further sorted into five air mass types. Using data from over 9.5 years of on-orbit operation, and following the relative approach technique, collocated measurements of IIR and of its companion channels have been compared at all latitudes over ocean, during day and night, and for all types of scenes in a wide range of brightness temperatures. The relative approach shows an excellent stability of IIR2–MODIS31 and IIR3–MODIS32 brightness temperature differences (BTDs) since launch. A slight trend within the IIR1–MODIS29 BTD, that equals −0.02 K yr−1 on average over 9.5 years, is detected when using the relative approach at all latitudes and all scene temperatures. For very cold scene temperatures (190–200 K) in the tropics, each IIR channel is warmer than its MODIS companion channel by 1.6 K on average. For the stand-alone approach, clear sky measurements only are considered, which are directly compared with simulations using 4A/OP and collocated ERA-Interim (ERA-I) reanalyses. The clear sky mask is derived from collocated observations from IIR and the CALIPSO lidar. Simulations for clear sky pixels in the tropics reproduce the differences between IIR1 and MODIS29 within 0.02 K and between IIR2 and MODIS31 within 0.04 K, whereas IIR3–MODIS32 is larger than simulated by 0.26 K. The stand-alone approach indicates that the trend identified from the relative approach originates from MODIS29, whereas no trend (less than ±0.004 K yr−1) is identified for any of the IIR channels. Finally, using the relative approach, a year-by-year seasonal bias between nighttime and daytime IIR–MODIS BTD was found at mid-latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. It is due to a nighttime IIR bias as determined by the stand-alone approach, which originates from a calibration drift during day-to-night transitions. The largest bias is in June and July when IIR2 and IIR3 are warmer by 0.4 K on average, and IIR1 is warmer by 0.2 K.

Abstract:
Abstract. Version 2 of the Level 1b calibrated radiances of the Imaging Infrared Radiometer (IIR) on board the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite has been released recently. This new version incorporates corrections of small but systematic seasonal calibration biases previously revealed in Version 1 data products mostly north of 30∘ N. These biases – of different amplitudes in the three IIR channels 8.65 µm (IIR1), 10.6 µm (IIR2), and 12.05 µm (IIR3) – were made apparent by a striping effect in images of IIR inter-channel brightness temperature differences (BTDs) and through seasonal warm biases of nighttime IIR brightness temperatures in the 30–60∘ N latitude range. The latter were highlighted through observed and simulated comparisons with similar channels of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Aqua spacecraft. To characterize the calibration biases affecting Version 1 data, a semi-empirical approach is developed, which is based on the in-depth analysis of the IIR internal calibration procedure in conjunction with observations such as statistical comparisons with similar MODIS/Aqua channels. Two types of calibration biases are revealed: an equalization bias affecting part of the individual IIR images and a global bias affecting the radiometric level of each image. These biases are observed only when the temperature of the instrument increases, and they are found to be functions of elapsed time since night-to-day transition, regardless of the season. Correction coefficients of Version 1 radiances could thus be defined and implemented in the Version 2 code. As a result, the striping effect seen in Version 1 is significantly attenuated in Version 2. Systematic discrepancies between nighttime and daytime IIR–MODIS BTDs in the 30–60∘ N latitude range in summer are reduced from 0.2 K in Version 1 to 0.1 K in Version 2 for IIR1–MODIS29. For IIR2–MODIS31 and IIR3–MODIS32, they are reduced from 0.4 K to close to zero, except for IIR3–MODIS32 in June, where the night-minus-day difference is around −0.1 K.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Haze pollution has frequently occurred in winter over Eastern China in recent years. Over Eastern China, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud detection data were compared with the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) for three years (2013–2016) for three kinds of underlying surface types (dark, bright, and water). We found that MODIS and CALIOP agree most of the time (82% on average), but discrepancies occurred at low CALIOP cloud optical thickness (COT < 0.4) and low MODIS cloud top height (CTH < 1.5 km). In spring and summer, the CALIOP cloud fraction was higher by more than 0.1 than MODIS due to MODIS’s incapability of observing clouds with a lower COT. The discrepancy increased significantly with a decrease in MODIS CTH and an increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD, about 2–4 times), and MODIS observed more clouds that were undetected by CALIOP over PM2.5 > 75 μg m−3 regions in autumn and particularly in winter, suggesting that polluted weather over Eastern China may contaminate MODIS cloud detections because MODIS will misclassify a heavy aerosol layer as cloudy under intense haze conditions. Besides aerosols, the high solar zenith angle (SZA) in winter also affects MODIS cloud detection, and the ratio of MODIS cloud pixel numbers to CALIOP cloud-free pixel numbers at a high SZA increased a great deal (about 4–21 times) relative to that at low SZA for the three surfaces. As a result of the effects of aerosol and SZA, MODIS cloud fraction was 0.08 higher than CALIOP, and MODIS CTH was more than 2 km lower than CALIOP CTH in winter. As for the cloud phases and types, the results showed that most of the discrepancies could be attributed to water clouds and low clouds (cumulus and stratocumulus), which is consistent with most of the discrepancies at low MODIS CTH.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to compare the available tools in R for downloading and processing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, specifically the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) product. The R tools evaluated were the MODIS package, RGISTools, MODISTools, R Google Earth Engine (RGEE) package, MODIStsp, and the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) application. Each tool was used to download the same product (EVI) corresponding to the same day (3 December 2015), and downloaded data were used to analyze the urban growth of Tarija (Bolivia) as an interesting application. The following features were analyzed: download time and memory used during the download, additional post-processing time, local memory occupied on the computer, and downloaded file formats. Results showed that the most efficient R tools were those that work directly in the “cloud” or use text queries (RGEE and AppEEARS, respectively) and provide, as a final product, a cropped.tif image according to the area of interest.

Abstract:
2009 - 2010
The aim of this thesis is to offer a global and theoretical reconstructions of the grammatical speculative of the Modistae. Medieval speculative grammar is a theory that grew out of the schoolmens work with ancient Latin grammar, but with a new approach. There is a double consideration of the linguistics facts: a grammatical and logical one. This autors tried to give a theoretical frame work based on expressly formulated premises. This theory has been labeled “modistic” froma the concept of modus significandi. In the first part of my work a try to give a briefly roundup on the most important critical works with the aims to explore the reasons why the storiography used the categories of modistae and speculative grammar. In the central part I give a reconstruction of the modistic theory of grammar. The most important factor for the development of this theory is the recovery of the whole Aristotelian corpus, especially the Posterior Analitics, the Metaphisics and the De Anima, with their strong requirements for the construction for the construction of a scientific theory and their more complex semantic doctrines based on an elaborate epistemological foundation. Since vocal expressions differ from one language to another, they cannot constituite the true objects of grammar. The obvious place to look for universal features of language is in the semantic component, but it is not the meanings of the individual words which prove to be relevant to the grammarian. But a different form of sinfication that Modistae call modi significandi. When the grammarians wanted to raise the course of grammar they try to collect it with the medieval status of the science. It was accordingly determined to be a speculative and auxiliary science: speculative because its goal was not to teach language but to describe and explain the nature anfd organization of the language (in this case Latin) as the most important and convenient vehicle of communication; auxiliary because grammar, like logic, was not directly concerned with the world, but with the reflection of it in our decription. In the final part of the work I give some introductory remarks on the problem of intentionality in the last decades of XIII century – and particularly on the Modistic doctrine of intentiones. In the last years many scholars have faced the problem of intentionality in the Middle Ages, but very few studies have been dedicated to the modistic theory of intentiones. The Modistae, a group of Masters who taught Logic and Grammar in Paris in the second half of XIII Century –, maintained a very original theory of intentionality: in other contexts and in other authors, the intentiones were either a psychological-ontological content of the knowledge’s theory (the so called species theory), or the mind’s capacity to tend towards things. In the modistic theory there is a double approach to the problem of intentiones: a psycho-logical approach and a linguistic one, according to their tendency to melt the respective limits of Logic and Grammar. That is why we can call the approach of the Modistae, to the theory of intentionality, a Semantical approach. A part of this section is dedicated to the origin of the concept (from the Aristotelian and Arabic logic) of intentio. In the Aristotelian works De interpretatione and De Anima, through their Latin and Arabic translations/commentaries,- many authors had seen the origin of the concept, but in these two books there is also the beginning of many problems (in connection with intentionality), which were handed on from author to author until the end of the Middle Ages, such as the nature of the passiones animae and the species. These problems were also discussed by the Modistae who gave an original answer to the question of the nature of intentiones, on which focuses the subsequent part of my paper. Definitely, intentio, for the Modistae, is something like a processio through which a thing, outside the mind, is intellecta and then expressed by a word.[a cura dell'autore]

Abstract:

This thesis aims to evaluate the attractiveness to the small Brazilian investor, from a financial point of view, of a new form of investment, based on characteristics of the Brazilian crowdfunding model and of traditional investment tools, to be called crowdinvesting. Supported by the detailed understanding of the existing crowdfunding model in the country and the identification and mapping of the characteristics of traditional investment instruments, this study seeks to define how the new form of investment would work and examine whether, in comparison with traditional tools, in terms of risk and return, the crowdinvesting model would be competitive in the Brazilian market.

Moepi, Gaamele Francina. "Omphile Umphi Modise : diteng le dimelo tsa baanelwabagolo (Setswana)." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/26106.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines D.P.S Monyaise’s short story titled Omphile Umphi Modise which were scrutinized by Mogapi (1992), Pretorius (1990), Manyaka (1992), Shole (1997) and Malimabe (1998). Their investigation did not only focus on the content of the short story, but also concentrated on the structure and style of the author. When scrutinizing Omphile Umphi Modise, the focus mainly falls on content and characterization of the characters. This research is based on an adopted narratological model, which is used by Groenewald (1993) and Mojalefa (1994).. When investigating the content, emphasis is put on the topic as a theme and part of the plot, which is imperative in the analysis of Omphile Umphi Modise. Two terms which are to define and describe are used to explain and unravel ideas that were used by the writer to simplify the problems a reader would encounter in this investigation. When analyzing the content as theory, the following four elements are noticed: characters, events, time and place. Another important aspect on the level of content is the division of the characters into two subgroups, namely quarrelsome and kindhearted.. In Omphile Umphi Modise, the kindhearted is Motlalepule, while the quarrelsome is rraModise who blatantly refuses to see Motlalepule’s good side. These two characters are described by the following: intention, patronage abilities, success and resistance. The investigation explains that the theme, which is ‘keeping a secret can lead to one’s doom’, is the one that connects the events and the plot, with the intention of highlighting the message to attract the reader. Design is one of the most important aspects of the plot. It is herewithin divided into two sections which highlight the characterization of the protagonist and antagonist as well as the revelation of the aspect of tragedy in Omphile Umphi Modise. The characters are divided into two sections, namely main and minor characters. The main characters are the protagonist, the antagonist and the tritagonist. The antagonist in Omphile Umphi Modise is rraModise/Mosimane yo o tedu tsebeng/ tedu tsa katse who is portrayed to be evil because he mandated Thandi, a minor character, to put drugs in the tea Motlalepule was about to drink, and sadly ended up drinking it herself. After she was drugged, mosimane yo tedu tsebeng/tedu tsa katse raped and impregnated her. The writer uses techniques to explain the personality traits of the characters. He employs a distinguishing technique to highlight personality traits of Motlalepule which are beauty, misfortune, suffering, and poverty. These are explained by the following techniques: focus, differentiation, conflict, use of the possessive, use of the adjective form, point of view, use of diminutive form, exaggeration, use of the pronoun, use of idioms, proverbs and, similes and omission. Differentiation is employed to highlight leadership as a personality trait of the antagonist, mosimane yo o tedu tsebeng/ tedu tsa katse/rraModise is which is explained by two techniques: indicative mood and point of view.

Abstract: The significant presence of mulatto women in the music of Colonial Brazil and her professional activity in contrast to participation of castrati in the Lusitanian scene inspired us to propose this specific study. Therefore, this research looks into the women in Rio de Janeiro¿s lyrical-musical environment in order to identify the particularities of their presence according to the information contained in the musical manuscripts of the period. Initially, we contextualized the female presence in the arts, taking into consideration an interdisciplinary reading. Afterwards, we focused on the activity at the Theatre of Manuel Luís ¿ Casa da Ópera also known as the Ópera Nova, or even Royal Theatre or Teatro Régio, operating from the last decades of the eighteenth century until the year of 1813 ¿ and more specifically, its repertoire. Recent studies have identified the use of Luso-Brazilian dramatic music manuscripts in colonial lands belonging to the Ducal Palace¿s Library at Vila Viçosa (Portugal). This material ¿ possibly deposited in Bragança family¿s palace after the return of D. João VI to the Lusitanian lands in 1821 ¿ includes Italian operas, music comedies, entremezes/farças and other occasional works, among which we selected the manuscripts of the opera La modista raggiratrice, composed by Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816), due to the unique information related to its performance on the Carioca stage. We also developed an analytical study of these manuscripts and made some considerations in regard to ornamentation and technical-vocal issues, seeking to define the role of the female singers in the Carioca stage in the proposed period not only as supportive musicians, but rather as transformative agents of musical aesthetics in the Colony. We include the transcription of the musical numbers from the opera La modista..., in which there are female characters, according to the Colonial performance given by the female singers Joaquina Lapinha, Maria Candida and Francisca ¿ three of the singers/actresses of the Theatre of Manuel Luís

Modise, Shadrack Tsholofelo. "Experiences of psychiatric nurses working with aggressive patients / Modise S.T." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/8193.

Full text
Abstract:
The aggression of some psychiatric patients is recognised as a major problem in healthcare circles, both locally and internationally. It creates a significant risk for psychiatric nurses as these nurses spend more time with their patients than nurses from other nursing disciplines. Nurses are more likely to be involved in preventing and managing aggressive behaviour and are more at risk of being victims of patients' aggressive acts. Little research has been conducted to understand how nurses think when they have to manage aggressive patients. In an attempt to address this problem, the objectives of this study were to explore and describe the experiences of psychiatric nurses working with aggressive patients, and to propose guidelines that will assist psychiatric nurses in managing aggressive patients more effectively. A qualitative design was employed to conduct the study. Individual interviews were used as the method of data collection. Data saturation was reached after eleven individual interviews. The researcher and co–coder reached consensus during a meeting organised for this purpose. The findings suggest that the majority of the participants experience working with aggressive patients predominantly negatively, and only a few of them still hold positive attitudes. The most prominent themes were that participants felt incompetent in managing aggressive patients, and they also highlighted that they find themselves working in an unsafe environment where they have been assaulted by patients on numerous occasions. Based on these findings the researcher proposed guidelines to assist psychiatric nurses in managing aggressive patients more effectively. The researcher also compiled recommendations for nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing research with regard to the management of aggressive patients.

Abstract:
An improved approach to evaluate thermal anomalies characteristics using the pixel-based analysis of the MODIS imagery was proposed. The approach allows us to improve the accuracy in estimating characteristics of active combustion zones comparing to the standard Dozier method. We used the imagery of active wildfires in Siberian forests from the MODIS radiometer acquired in the spectral ranges of 3.930–3.990 and 10.780–11.280 mm (bands 21 and 31, respectively). Nonlinear exponential function was used to describe the approximation of the temperature of combustion zones. Available data of field and numerical experiments were used for validating of the approximation accuracy. Nonlinear approximation of wildfire front temperature allows to determine the portion of the active pixel of the MODIS image with the given temperature excess comparing to the temperature of background cover. This improves the accuracy in extracting of active burning zones as well as in classifying the heat release rate at the sub-pixel level of analysis.

Abstract:
Near-field scattered light, due to ghost images produced from multiple reflections or due to scatter off optical surfaces, will contribute to background noise. This background noise can reduce contrast and blur edge transitions. These sources of background noise cannot be compensated for since they are scene-dependent. High-performance remote sensing instruments, such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), have strict systems-level radiometric performance criteria, such as transient response and stray light, which demand that background noise sources be well controlled. This paper discusses design challenges brought on by these requirements and subsequent modifications and analysis techniques used to minimize ghosting for the MODIS instrument.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Acute malnutrition is the highest cause of death among children under five. This is because children are a group that is vulnerable to health problems, one of which is infection. In this phase there is a very rapid growth and development in children. This problem occurs in part in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to review the effect of supplementary food therapy for recovery among malnourished children aged 0-59 months. Subjects and Methods: This was a scoping review using the Arksey and O’Malley framework. The framework used to identify relevant studies is Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PICO), with a search strategy using 5 databases, namely PubMed, Science Direct, Proquest, Wiley, and Google Scholar which match the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Supplementary food therapy for recovery of malnourished children 0-59 months could be done with inpatient and outpatient care using Modified Dried Skilled Milk and Coconut Oil (Modisco), Ready to use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), Soy Maize Sorghum RUTF (SMS RUTF), F 75, and F 100. The most widely used recovery supplementary food therapies are Modisco, RUTF, SMS RUTF, F75 and F100. RUTF in Indonesia has not been widely used for the therapy of malnourished children, while for F75 and F100 it has been used as a treatment but not maximally because it tastes bad so it is not liked by children. Conclusion: Several studies have examined the effectiveness of these supplementary foods, apart from being used in the hospital, they can also be given on an outpatient basis with the supervision of related health workers. Lasko, Kristofer. Incorporating Sentinel-1 SAR imagery with the MODIS MCD64A1 burned area product to improve burn date estimates and reduce burn date uncertainty in wildland fire mapping. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42122.

Abstract:
Wildland fires result in a unique signal detectable by multispectral remote sensing and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, in many regions, such as Southeast Asia, persistent cloud cover and aerosols temporarily obstruct multispectral satellite observations of burned area, including the MODIS MCD64A1 Burned Area Product (BAP). Multiple days between cloud free pre- and postburn MODIS observations result in burn date uncertainty. We incorporate cloud-penetrating, C-band SAR-with the MODIS MCD64A BAP in Southeast Asia, to exploit the strengths of each dataset to better estimate the burn date and reduce the potential burn date uncertainty range. We incorporate built-in quality control using MCD64A1 to reduce erroneous pixel updating. We test the method over part of Laos and Thailand during April 2016 and found average uncertainty reduction of 4.5 d, improving 15% of MCD64A1 pixels. A new BAP could improve monitoring temporal trends of wildland fires, air quality studies and monitoring post-fire vegetation dynamics.
