Simion, Samuela. Marco Polo, Il Devisement dou monde nella redazione veneziana V (cod. Hamilton 424 della Staatsbibliothek di Berlino). Venice: Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-321-2.

Full text
Abstract:
The volume contains the commented edition of the Devisement dou monde based on the Berlin Staatsbibliothek - Preußischer Kulturbesitz Codex, Hamilton 424. The Hamilton 424 Codex, transcribed in Venice in the second half of the fifteenth century, contains the translation of a Latin model (whose features can be partially reconstructed virtually starting from some translation errors) and is the only known witness of V. Due to its characteristics, V represents a crucial point in the definition of the transmission dynamics of Polo’s book: its readings are confirmed, often in a broader form, by the Latin version known as Z. V strengthens the hypothesis that, after returning to Venice, Marco Polo modified the text written with Rustichello da Pisa in Genoa. Actually, version V represents the first step of this long process of rewriting, which probably occurred in several phases. This volume includes an introduction, the text edition, a textual commentary, as well as an index. A second and forthcoming volume will contain the linguistic analysis and glossary.

Abstract:
This chapter depicts the current position of what is called ‘modified universalism’. It also synthesizes the different aspects of modified universalism into the set of emerging norms concerning jurisdiction, choice of law, recognition, assistance, and cooperation, accompanied by global duties and safeguards. Modified universalism has translated the theoretical model of universalism, where one law governs and one forum presides in cross-border insolvency cases, to concrete and more nuanced emerging norms that are fit for the real world and real business structures. It is, however, still held back where it is regarded as a trend and an interim solution in the context of an aspiration for pure universalism. Consequently, one of the challenges laid before the universalist approach, in its various forms, is that even though it is generally beneficial, it is not universally adopted.

Full text
Abstract:
We develop a simple semi-structural model for the Rwandan economy to better understand the monetary policy transmission mechanism. A key feature of the model is the introduction of a modified uncovered interest parity condition to capture key structural features of Rwanda’s economy and policy framework, such as the limited degree of capital mobility and managed floating regime. A filtration of the observed data through the model allows us to illustrate the contribution of various factors to inflation dynamics and its deviations from the inflation target. Our results, consistent with evidence for other countries in the region, suggest that food and oil prices as well as the exchange rate have accounted for the bulk of inflation dynamics in Rwanda.

Abstract:
By examining degree plans and conducting interviews with faculty and students at various national and international institutions, the authors of this chapter have generated four curricular models that suggest how existing degree plans and/or core music courses might be productively modified. The enhanced core model (1) aims to broaden the scope of existing curricula by emphasizing more diverse, cross-disciplinary content. The pluralist model (2) requires students to diversify their focus during their first two years of study in order to incorporate a greater degree of critical thinking, creative engagement, and broad skill sets into the major. The integrated model (3) emphasizes music making as the primary mode of learning basic skills and reduces overall requirements by combining courses such as ear training, music theory, and keyboard skills into a single class. Finally, the capstone model (4) demonstrates how self-directed and highly individualized projects can be incorporated into degree plans.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the basic model of the law and economics of litigation, focusing on private civil litigation, in particular the litigation value of a lawsuit and the incentives for filing a suit. It begins with the one-stage single plaintiff/single defendant investment model of litigation, and describes the conditions for filing, default, settlement, and litigation. It examines the effects of litigation cost- and fee-shifting and the effects of percentage contingency fee arrangements within the standard one-stage model. The model is modified to take into account sequencing and option value. It is shown how litigation with multiple stages and the revelation of information alter the investment value of litigation, and the effects of litigation reform proposals such as fee-shifting. The chapter discusses third party or external effects and how these complications affect the outcome of litigation, the viability of a lawsuit, and the predictions of the standard model of litigation.

Strain, James J., and Michael Blumenfield, eds. Depression as a Systemic Illness. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190603342.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Depression has been declared by the World Health Organization in March of 2017 to be the illness with the greatest burden of disease in the world. This volume attempts to examine the current state of our understanding of depressive disorders, from the animal models, allostatie load, patterns of recurrence, effects on other illnesses, for example, cancer, neurological, cardiovascular, wound healing, etc. It is from this perspective that the editors declare that depression is a systemic illness, not just a mental disorder. Therefore, primary care physicians need to know how to diagnose, treat, and refer when necessary for the non-complicated, non-refractory forms of depression. From this perspective models of mental health training for the primary care physician are reviewed. Then a new model, the medical model, a step beyond collaborative care is described. Non complicated depressive illness needs to be addressed by the primary care physician much as they do asthma, diabetes, hyptertension, and congestive heart failure. Even collaborative care models are unable as the number of psychiatrists is too few even in developed countries, let alone in developing ones to work with primary care. Medical schools and residency training programs need to incorporate curriculum and clinical experiences to accommodate developing expertise to diagnose, treat, and refer when necessary in this most common medical malady. Finally, a modified electronic medical record is proposed as a collaborating agent for the primary care physician.

Kisanga, Elineema, Vincent Leyaro, Wahabi Matengo, Michael Noble, Helen Barnes, and Gemma Wright. Assessing the distributional impact of lowering the value-added tax rate for standard-rated items in Tanzania and options for recouping revenue losses. 38th ed. UNU-WIDER, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2021/976-1.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the distributional impact of lowering the value-added tax rate for standard-rated items in Tanzania Mainland. Using a static tax-benefit microsimulation model—TAZMOD—which is underpinned by data derived from the Household Budget Survey 2017/18, reductions in value-added taxes from 18 per cent to 17 per cent and 16 per cent are simulated. The revenue losses and impact on poverty are estimated. The rules for direct taxes are then modified in order to identify ways in which the revenue loss caused by the lowering of the standard rate of value-added taxes can be recouped.
