Abstract:
From a theoretical point of view, modernisation is a holistic social change involving all aspects and a long-term dynamic process of social development, which is a common characteristic of modernisation. Therefore, the cause of modernisation needs a strong leading core to integrate all forces, otherwise all fields of society may face an undesirable situation of mutual fragmentation and respective dominance in the process of social development, which will cause a fault in the strategy of social modernisation and trigger social conflicts. Western modernisation is a capital-led modernisation, a modernisation governed by modern rationality and the logic of capital, and its development is bound to be accompanied by a corresponding crisis of modernity. On the basis of the common features of modernisation, China has explored a modernisation framework different from that of the West in terms of the positioning of modernisation, leadership authority, value goals, development dynamics and paradigm of world interaction, so as to pull developing countries out of the swamp of "one-dimensional modernisation", and to eliminate the "myths" created by developing countries about Western modernisation. It has taken developing countries out of the swamp of "one-dimensional modernisation", broken the superstitions of developing countries about the "myth " created by Western modernisation, and enriched the development paths taken by developing countries in the world with the theoretical and practical paradigms of diversified modernisation based on their own national conditions, thus creating a new form of human civilisation and a brand-new choice for the modernisation of the human society.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to trace and/or historicise modernisation as a conceptual framework from the antecedents to present times. It also highlights the recent and past attention provided to modernisation by business and economic history scholars to recognise their contribution. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a literature review which offers a sample of debate from foundational scholars regarding the concept of modernisation emanating from sociologists, historians and business scholars. To present an analysis of the recent activity from business scholars on modernisation from highly recognizable journals and draw conclusions about the conceptual framework regarding its future as a framing device, the authors used search functions in the Business Source Complete database and specific journal search engines. Findings A keyword search of modernisation produced 45 published articles from 2000 to 2016 in business-related history and Financial Times top 50 journals. The foremost recognizable aspect of modernisation, as a construct presented here, demonstrates the concept that aims to illustrate a basic and/or universal pattern of the social processes that primarily affect development (e.g. cultural, economic, organisational, ecological, technological, etc.). Moreover, the authors demonstrate that economic and business scholars helped identify and explain different types of modernisation, reinforce or connect specific characteristics to modernisation, develop modernisation as an index capable of measurement and provide evidence of modernisation as a rhetorical strategy. Originality/value Little to no previous studies on modernisation emphasised on the contribution of business and economic historians; instead, they focused on the contributions of sociologists and social historians. Business and management historians served as an important voice in the development of modernisation as a conceptual frame. They highlighted the opportunities that are available to position modernisation as a useful tool to predict the future of traditional and advanced organisations.

Abstract:
The secularisation theory of Max Weber states that modernisation inevitably leads to the decline of religion. This theory has in recent years been challenged by the desecularisation theories of various sociologists and philosophers. This article probes the possible link between modernisation and secularisation through a case study of the Republic of South Africa. South Africa is an important case study because it went through a rapid process of modernisation from the 1990s onwards. The first section examines the secularisation thesis of Weber and his supporters, as well as theories of desecularisation. The second section discusses the periods of anti-modernisation (1910–90) and modernisation (1990–2012) in South Africa. The third section analyses statistical data on the state of religion in South Africa, while the last section offers some concluding remarks on the relationship between modernisation and secularisation in South Africa thus far. The finding of the article is that the South African experience indicates that modernisation has an impact on religion, but the effect is not necessarily one of a decline in religion. In South Africa, modernisation has led to the decline of religion in some communities and the rejuvenation of religion in others. The effect of modernisation on religion seems to depend on its interaction with a range of other social factors.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTWhether filial piety or financial support to older parents is eroded or maintained through societal modernisation is an unresolved issue in China and a matter of widespread concern. Whereas structural-functionalist theories predict erosion, alternative views suggest that modernisation reduces filial piety only minimally or conditionally. One possible condition that resists the modernisation effect is education. The impacts of modernisation and its interaction with Chinese education are therefore the focus of this study. Using various sources, the paper reports analyses of the relationships between the levels of modernisation in six Chinese cities, measured by average gross domestic product per capita, the average wage and the percentage of the workforce that are employed in the service sector, and variations in expressions of filial piety and cash payments to parents. Representative samples of the cities' adult residents were used. It was found that filial piety and cash payments were lower when the citizen was in a city with higher or more advanced modernisation, and that the reduction in affirmations of filial piety associated with higher modernisation was less among citizens with higher education. It is concluded that educational policy and practice can be a means to sustain filial piety in the face of modernisation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Do arbitrators have the power to apply Article 81(3) EC and grant an individual exemption in the event they find an agreement to come within Article 81(1) EC? Before Modernisation, the answer was clearly negative. Under the old regime of EC competition law this particular power was the exclusive domain of the European Commission. The Modernisation Regulation and the accompanying Modernisation Package – consisting of a Commission Regulation, four Notices and two Guidelines – came into force on 1 May 2004. One of the key changes of Modernisation was that the national courts of the Member States were given the power to apply Article 81(3) EC and grant individual exemptions from the prohibition of Article 81(1) EC. But do arbitrators have this power as well? The Modernisation Regulation only mentions the national courts. It is silent on arbitration. This conspicuous silence has caused varying reactions. In this contribution I will discuss the consequences of the Modernisation Regulation for the practice of international commercial arbitration.

Abstract:
Since the industrial revolution, the term «modernisation» has gradually become an integral part of social development. In many countries and regions, modernisation has become not only a household word, but also a goal to strive for. Especially since the 1950s, with the spread of modernisation theory, modernisation has become a popular term. The main purpose of this article is to explore the meaning of modernisation in the sphere of national political governance, as well as the practical experience and the main role played by political parties as the main political force in the development of the country’s modernisation process. In order to achieve the research objectives, the author, using historical research method, studied in detail the historical modernization process of the Chinese state, which has achieved outstanding success in the development of national modernization, analysed the inseparable relationship between the Communist Party of China and China’s modernization, summarized its historical and practical experience

Abstract:
Workplace Noise Exposure After Modernisation of an Aluminium Processing ComplexThe aim of this study was to assess to which extent modernisation of an aluminium production complex reduced occupational noise hazard for jobs with the highest potential of exposure. Periodical measurements of noise level were taken at the same workplaces using the same method, before and after modernisation of all plants. The results were compared with the recommended standard. After modernisation, the noise was significantly reduced in all sections of all plants. The greatest reduction was measured in the foundry. After modernisation, the portion of workplaces with excessive noise level dropped significantly (chisquare=21.315; p<0.0001) from 78.4% to 13%. Noise remained a problem in ingot casting and dross skimming section. In the anode plant, noise remained a problem in the green mill section where noise intensities generated by mills and vibrocompactors varied from 95 dB(A) to 102 dB(A). In the electrolysis plant, the portion of workplaces with extensive noise dropped from 77.8% to 39.3% after modernisation (p=0.0019). Noise remains to be a problem at the anode covering section where levels rise up to 100 dB(A). The modernisation of the factory has considerably reduced the noise level in the working environment of all plants, but it can not be reduced completely.

Objective: Characterise the methods for optimisation of tank wagon fl eet. Determine the advantages obtained by the proprietor from wagon modernization. Establish the opportunity for increasing universality of rolling stock on the example of modernisation of tank wagons designed to transport petrochemical cargoes. Methods: Parameters of tank wagons for petrochemical cargo transportation in operation were compared to those of a modernised wagon. Structural elements of a wagon that require modernisation to be consistent with current regulatory requirements were identifi ed. Results of calculations and tests were analysed, and wagon certifi cation was carried out. Results: Ways of modernisation of tank wagons are shown. Primary wagon structural elements that require modernisation are described. Strength, fatigue strength and stability calculations were carried out. Safety valve throughput capacity is calculated, and requirements for this index during transportation of petrochemical cargoes. Optimum design for a drain device is established. A series of engineering prototype verifi cation tests in situ was run, including durability tests which confi rmed the possibility of safe operation of a modernised wagon throughout its service life. The wagon was certifi ed for compliance with railway rolling stock safety requirements. Practical importance: The studies conducted confi rm possibility of modernisation of petroleum and oil tank wagons for transportation of a wide range of cargoes. This would allow create a project for tank wagon modernisation. The novel wagon type is included in the Cargo Wagon Design Reference Guide. Proprietor can implement modernisation of wagons in accordance with the developed modernisation project

Abstract:
Britain's poor economic performance is often thought to be the product of exceptional, archaic characteristics of British society which weaken domestic industry; ‘modernisation’ is seen as the creation of a ‘normal’ capitalism. The modernisation project in recent years has shifted from the national to the local level, partly as a reaction to national neoliberalism which prioritises capital mobility over socialisation to promote manufacturing, Local modernisation strategies can avoid the dangers of overpoliticisation which beset national modernisation, but they are undermined not only by deeply rooted traditions but also by themselves promoting capital mobility and regressive effects. Local strategies for socialisation and movements for British modernisation are both disrupted by the opposition between, but mutual dependence of, capital mobility and the territorial socialisation of production. The difficulty of modernising Britain is thus due to the typicality rather than to the cxceptionalism of British capital.

Abstract:
The project of ontological anthropology expounded by Philippe Descola has unexplored merits for a critical and secular anthropology of Christian conversion in indigenous societies. Drawing on Shuar descriptions of their healing practice in a context of medical pluralism in southeast Ecuador, this article argues that for animist peoples, Protestant Evangelicalism constitutes a step toward philosophical materialism or ‘naturalism’. While Shuar healing reserves a central place for hallucinogenic plant-induced visions for personal empowerment and shamanic healing, Shuar Evangelicals express a preference for engaging only the material qualities of medicinal plants. This is not, however, the consequence of adopting a disenchanted material cosmology but of a submissive mode of relating to the immaterial aspects of reality normally engaged in ancestral Shuar ontology. The article thereby extends the ontological turn’s emphasis on what is known to a consideration of modes of relation to ontological content.
