Abstract:

The business environment has changed tremendously in the last two decades. Corporations have been forced to realign their global strategies and in order to cut costs, they started to transfer activities which were previously performed in-house to the market (e.g. IT, manufacturing or logistics) focusing instead on their core competencies. Nowadays companies outsource several of their logistics activities to so-called third-party logistics (3PL) companies and thus from being centralized, vertically integrated and with single-sited manufacturing facilities, enterprises have their network of resources globally dispersed.

As a result corporate management has realized that the competitive vehicle is no longer the individual firm, with its own resources and competencies. Instead, in order to cope with shorter product life cycles and ever more demanding customers, both on industrial and consumer markets, individual firms need to strategically become part of ‘extended enterprises’; that is, networks of specialist providers of resources and competencies.

However, because the capabilities to manage the entire network do not exist in any one organization, a new business organization was needed to provide the strategic knowledge and competence that will enable the complete integration of the supply chain. This new sort of firm, with core competencies on logistics processes and supply chain IT integration, besides offering consulting services on implementation and development of logistics and supply chain solutions, manages through the use of logistics control towers “the best of breed” 3PL specialists, integrating the end-to-end supply chain so that superior customer value is delivered in the most cost effective way. But how does the use of a supply chain integrator help the supply chain as a whole to achieve competitive advantages that enhance end-customer service? This paper aims to answer the above question. I felt that in order to be able to do that the most appropriate research strategy would be a qualitative study. Hence, a multi-case study was performed on three Swedish companies which differentiate themselves from the more traditional third-party logistics providers. The study was conducted by performing a set of semi-structured interviews with these companies. In order to give the study some sort of structure, I used an interview guide which was divided into three different themes; a) Organizational Design, b) Enterprise Logistics Integration and c) Logistics and Competitive advantages.

Once the interviews were transcribed and summarized, the empirical findings were then analyzed in light of a theoretical framework chosen previously. These theories, which in general terms relate to organizational design, supply chain management and finance, were also divided in the same themes as above. Finally, conclusions were drawn by linking the results of the interviews with the theoretical framework. It became evident that the supply chain integrator can help the supply chain as a whole not only to reduce costs related to inventory holding but also to help its client to improve end-customer service.

Abstract:
In this article we analyse main tendencies and trends driving institutional investing in Russia nowadays. Russian specifics of institutional investors market is that historically banks played key role and thus became the largest intermediaries in the financial system. Other institutional investors being insurance companies, pension funds and other mutual funds are still in development stage and have extensive opportunities to grow. However, total assets of non-bank institutional investors in Russia are still lagging behind those of banking sector and, therefore, banks are powerful institutional investors.

Bastian, Anne. "Explaining Trends in Car Use." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Transportvetenskap, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-214558.

Full text
Abstract:
Many western countries have seen a plateau and subsequent decline in car travel during the early 21st century. What has generated particular interest and debate is the claim that the development cannot only be explained by changes in traditional explanatory factors such as GDP, fuel prices and land-use. Instead, it has been argued, the observed trends are indications of substantial changes in lifestyles, preferences and attitudes to car travel and thus, not just a temporary plateau but a true peak in car use. This thesis is a compilation of five papers, studying the issue on a national, international, regional and city scale through quantitative analysis of aggregate administrative data and individual travel survey data. It concludes that the aggregate development of car travel per capita can be explained fairly well with the traditional model variables GDP and fuel price. Furthermore, this thesis shows that spatial context and policy become increasingly important in car use trends: car use diverges over time between city, suburban and rural residents of Sweden and other European countries, while gender and to some extent income become less differentiating for car use.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 147-152).
The debate on the impact of modern logistics on industrial location choice and property markets focuses on (1) whether modern inventory control and supply- chain configuration consolidate manufacturing and distribution locations and (2) whether modern logistics have reduced the demand for industrial real estate. In this research, I test the hypothesis that modern logistics have been restructuring industrial manufacturing and distribution networks, dispersing firms into certain regions to achieve the economies of dispersion, and reducing the demand for industrial space per unit of industrial output. The methodology used includes (a) theoretical analysis, (b) statistical and econometric analysis, (c) case studies, and (d) comparative analysis. Because the theoretical analysis does not provide a clear conclusion, I rely on empirical analyses to derive the actual impact or implications. Principle findings from the U.S. empirical study include (1) the changes in the distribution sector have a more significant impact on industrial location choice and property markets than the changes in the manufacturing sector; (2) both manufacturing and distribution industries have been dispersed in the past two decades; (3) improvement of inventory control is almost ubiquitous and, within a supply chain, certain players' gains are not necessarily at the cost of their suppliers' or customers' losses; (4) the traditional partial stock-adjustment model using yearly data does not explain the industrial property market well.
(cont.) Major findings from the China case studies include (1) modern logistics enable manufacturers to achieve cost reductions and service-level improvements simultaneously, and the impacts on their industrial location choice and space demand are consistent with the empirical findings of their U.S. counterparts; (2) with the expansion of globalization, advances in information technology, development of efficient markets, and increased demand from sophisticated customers, location choice and demand for industrial space will continue to be determined by the requirements of efficient supply chains.

Full text
Abstract:
The classification tree is an attractive method for classification as the predictions it makes are more transparent than most other classifiers. The most widely accepted approaches to tree-growth use axis-parallel splits to partition continuous attributes. Since the interpretability of a tree diminishes as it grows larger, researchers have sought ways of growing trees with oblique splits as they are better able to partition observations. The focus of this thesis is to grow oblique trees in a fast and deterministic manner and to propose ways of making them more interpretable. Finding good oblique splits is a computationally difficult task. Various authors have proposed ways of doing this by either performing stochastic searches or by solving problems that effectively produce oblique splits at each stage of tree-growth. A new approach to finding such splits is proposed that restricts attention to a small but comprehensive set of splits. Empirical evidence shows that good oblique splits are found in most cases. When observations come from a small number of classes, empirical evidence shows that oblique trees can be grown in a matter of seconds. As interpretability is the main strength of classification trees, it is important for oblique trees that are grown to be interpretable. As the proposed approach to finding oblique splits makes use of logistic regression, well-founded variable selection techniques are introduced to classification trees. This allows concise oblique splits to be found at each stage of tree-growth so that oblique trees that are more interpretable can be directly grown. In addition to this, cost-complexity pruning ideas which were developed for axis-parallel trees have been adapted to make oblique trees more interpretable. A major and practical component of this thesis is in providing the oblique.tree package in R that allows casual users to experiment with oblique trees in a way that was not possible before.

Wooders, Jameson D. "Local economies and material culture : trends on early modern Berkshire, 1650-1750." Thesis, University of Reading, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.552986.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how far the 'middling sort' of people in early modem England expressed a collective identity through material culture. It assumes that material culture (buildings, household furnishings, domesticated crops and animals) is an active agent in the expression of social identities. This study also draws on concepts in the early modem historiography closely associated with the 'middling sort', such as the 'Great Rebuilding', the 'Industrious Revolution' and the 'Consumer Revolution'. Using sub-regions within the historic county of Berkshire as case-studies, this thesis emphasizes diversity in local economies and material culture. In particular, by utilising probate inventories to investigate different types and scales of household production, the Berkshire data refute de Vries' model of an 'Industrious Revolution', showing instead increased material enrichment associated with diversification of production in south-eastern Berkshire, and impoverishment associated with a more limited range of activities in the south-west. House size (as revealed by hearth taxation records in addition to inventories) also varied in the different localities, indicating that the 'Great Rebuilding' too was not uniform across the county. The Berkshire evidence corresponds closely with Overton and his colleagues' conclusions from Cornwall and Kent, but unlike their county-wide studies, the more localized approach adopted here shows that the wealthiest area of early modem Berkshire was not that which also adopted new consumption goods most readily. The variable uptake of new items hardly suggests a 'Consumer Revolution', and no assemblages of new objects were found by which 'middling' households expressed a shared identity. Such local diversity suggests little collective identity amongst the 'middling sort', but indicates a range of different interests. This thesis thus argues for greater recognition of the many and varied degrees of people who were actually to be found in early modem England.

Abu, El-Shaer Yardy Afaf Mizel. "Trends and developments in the poetic language of Bilād al-Shām, 1967 -1987." Thesis, Durham University, 1995. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5117/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the development of poetic language in modem Arabic poetry through discussion of a selection of twelve poems from Bilād al-Shām (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine), applying a method of analysis and evaluation based on a close study of the text itself rather than on critical sources. A practical method of analysis is used to examine elements of poetic language, namely rhythm, theme and structure, the poet's voice, word-association, metaphor and symbol, all of which form the text. The study is introduced by a brief review of the development of modem Arabic poetry, of previous studies of poetic language in modem Arabic poetry, and an analysis of the poetic language in four outstanding poems of the post-second world war period. The four poems were chosen since they are typical of die changes, renewal or departure from classical poetic language. These poems embody new forms in both expression and ideas, and express the Arab identity by discussing Arab social and political problems. The four poems may not be the best poems of their time but each one clearly exhibits a different use of elements of poetic language current at the time. These poems, which are written before and during 1967, are still effective and influential today. Their poetic language is still the criterion by which to examine and compare the twelve selected poems in part two. The poems were chosen from those composed in Bilād al-Shām after the events of 1967. This choice was made to enable die writer to investigate die effect of the war upon poetry, to illustrate pan-Arabism and nationalism, and to examine the poetic language in these poems. In both part one and part two my concern is to present facts rather than arguments. My intention is also to make a brief comparison and conclusion. These conclusions - drawn from the discussion - are found in part three. This study deals with the following: the identification of common factors and differences in the poems discussed; the existence, or lack, of creative trends in the use of language; the degree of influence of the four poems upon the twelve selected poems; and whether die twelve poems imitate ideas, concepts, words and symbols derived from the four poems. It also traces the development of poetic language as it approaches the prose style and as it establishes a different use of metaphors and symbols.

Abstract:
The most important aim of pre-positioning is to reduce the delivery lead time with eliminating the procurement stage by positioning items closer to the disaster area. The last 30 years&rsquo
data is used to designate the disaster trends
EM-DAT database is used to acquire the necessary data which includes the disaster locations, type of disasters and number of people affected. Also the most recent four years&rsquo
data is used for verification of the results. Locations of the optimal warehouses for pre-positioning are determined considering the generated emergency response scenarios. When we pursue this exploration, besides determining the optimal pre-positioning locations given by CARE International, we also determined where the natural disaster trend drifts towards. Therefore, this research tries to find an answer whether the disaster trends should be considered to determine the location of the pre-positioned items or not.

Traditional Chinese society did much to devalue and stigmatize soldiers. During the Chinese civil war the Chinese Communist Party's military campaign had to recruit large numbers of soldiers. This began a long struggle to undo traditional stereotypes held against soldiers. Later, peacetime saw the PLA at the forefront of massive propaganda campaigns, which eventually led to a zenith in popular imagery. Modem observers of China are noting how fast, far and widespread efforts are to modernize the massive PLA. This new PLA requires a new kind of soldier, one who is comfortable with a computer. Ironically, the technology that makes modernization of the PLA possible also strengthens the civilian economy, creating a strong disincentive for highly educated youths to join the anny. As a result, the modem Chinese government has once again embarked on a massive campaign to strengthen the prestige of the PLA in China.

Piecyk, Maja Izabela. "Analysis of long-term freight transport, logistics and related CO2 trends on a business-as-usual basis." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2326.

Full text
Abstract:
Freight transport is the life-blood of today’s economy. Raw materials, components and finished products flow in vast quantities through complex supply chain systems to satisfy the demands of the ultimate customers. Although vital to ensure economic prosperity, freight transport also poses a large burden on the environment and society. Road remains a dominant mode of freight transport in the UK, with 65% of the total tonne-kms moved and 82% of tonnes lifted in 2008. Most of the externalities associated with road freight transport have already been subject to legal environmental controls. CO2 emissions are the only externality that still remains unregulated. In order to evaluate the effects of potential regulations or other policy options, decision makers need a reliable forecast of the future course of the road freight transport- related CO2 emissions in the absence of such new initiatives and interventions. Most currently available forecasts relate to road transport as a whole and focus on the passenger vehicle activity. Forecasts of road freight volumes and related externalities are typically linked to trends in economic activity, ignoring changes in the nature of logistics and supply chain systems. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to produce a forecast of road freight transport – related CO2 emissions up to 2020 on a business-as-usual (BAU) basis by incorporating the projections on future trends in a number of logistics and road freight transport variables and the driving forces behind them. The theoretical foundations of the logistics and supply chain management discipline continuously evolve, allowing researchers to view real-world problems from an array of philosophical perspectives, leading to scientific advancement and enrichment of the body of knowledge. This thesis is rooted in the critical realist paradigm and employs methodological triangulation involving focus group research, a Delphi questionnaire survey and spreadsheet modelling to produce a reliable BAU forecast of future CO2 emissions from road freight transport. In addition to the forecast of future CO2 emissions from Heavy Goods Vehicles, this research also elicits forecasts of changes in key logistics and freight transport variables such as handling factor, average length of haul, modal split, empty running, lading factor and fuel efficiency up to 2020. The main structural, commercial, operational, functional, external and product-related factors behind future trends in these variables are also investigated. The BAU scenario is assessed in the light of the UK greenhouse gas reduction target and additional scenarios offering CO2 savings greater than that predicted by the BAU case modelled. The thesis concludes with a review of potential policy measures that could help to reduce the future CO2 emissions from road freight transport.

Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Engineering, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-9232.

Full text
Abstract:

The main purpose of this thesis has been to explore and evaluate future drivers and trends within outbound logistics. In addition to this it was said that Syncron International AB, which assigned the study, should be able to use the findings to develop their products and services in a way that would satisfy future customer demand.

The thesis was mainly carried out in three steps. Firstly, an extensive theoretical framework was constructed which formed the base for the continuing study. The theoretical framework contributed to both opinions in the studied areas, which were further processed later on in the study, as well as it formed the interview material. Secondly, interviews were held with a selection of Syncron’s customers which had experience from the studied areas. The results from the empirical study were then evaluated and summarized. Thirdly, the empirical and the theoretical results were analyzed and compared to form conclusions regarding the future of outbound logistics. These conclusions included recommendations for how Syncron and similar companies should adjust and prepare for this development.

The future of outbound logistics will be more complex in many aspects due to various reasons. The customers are expected to demand more customized product and service offerings as well as they will demand suppliers to take over responsibility for service and maintenance. Distribution strategies like direct deliveries, cross-docking and transport consolidation are expected to be used to a greater extent in the future, as one method to deal with challenging future demands.

The above mentioned issues, in combination with increased environmental pressures, will demand more from planning and management activities. This will in turn require further developed tools for planning and management, which are expected to be one of the main enablers for the future logistical development. These tools should also be able to increase the visibility throughout the entire supply chain, which is considered to become a crucial prerequisite in planning and forecasting processes in the future. It is important that companies like Syncron are aware of the expected enablers of the future logistical development, since it is within this area their customers will need assistance.

This thesis has replicated a content analysis study conducted by G. Ray Funkhouser in the 1960s. This study concurs with the Funkhouser assertion that some prominent issues in the news do not necessarily merit the attention from the media at the times they receive it. The findings in this study appear to also indicate a "sampling bias" in the media, whereby the amount of news coverage deviates in a systematic way from the actual flow of events. Additionally, this study indicates a strong relationship between the amount of media attention an issue receives and whether or not that issue was noted as the most important problem by respondents to the Gallup Poll.

Disagreement between economists is a well know fact. However, it took a long time for this concept to be incorporated in economic models. In this survey, we review the consequences and insights provided by recent models. Since disagreement between market agents can be generated through different hypotheses, the main differences between them are highlighted. Finally, this work concludes with a short review of nowcasting using google trends, emphasizing advances connecting both literatures.

Abstract:
Early Modern drama, particularly that of Thomas Middleton, John Webster, and Ben Jonson, reveal the importance of property law in England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Their treatment of property law not only reflects and comments on the changes in property law and contract law of the period, but, in many surprising ways, it also anticipates our twentieth- and twenty-first-century discussions of property law as it pertains to property in the person. In much the same way that Early Modern persons debated the limitations and moral implications of private property, we today struggle to understand the limitations and moral implications of property in our bodies. Although these issues have universal importance, they are particularly relevant to women because women, from the early days of the sixteenth century through our contemporary period, have been and continue to be denied rights to property in one way or another. This dissertation explores the drama through the lenses of Early Modern English law, contemporary Western law, feminist philosophy, and literary analysis, and an examination of the plays reveals that women have a property interest in reproductive labor such as gestation, child labor, and child birth. These property interests are relevant to contracts regarding reproductive technologies, paternity law, and doctrines of informed consent, and they also provide a more robust set of rights that protect women from over-reaching state action.

Schoergendorfer, Angela. "BAYESIAN SEMIPARAMETRIC GENERALIZATIONS OF LINEAR MODELS USING POLYA TREES." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/214.

Full text
Abstract:
In a Bayesian framework, prior distributions on a space of nonparametric continuous distributions may be defined using Polya trees. This dissertation addresses statistical problems for which the Polya tree idea can be utilized to provide efficient and practical methodological solutions. One problem considered is the estimation of risks, odds ratios, or other similar measures that are derived by specifying a threshold for an observed continuous variable. It has been previously shown that fitting a linear model to the continuous outcome under the assumption of a logistic error distribution leads to more efficient odds ratio estimates. We will show that deviations from the assumption of logistic error can result in great bias in odds ratio estimates. A one-step approximation to the Savage-Dickey ratio will be presented as a Bayesian test for distributional assumptions in the traditional logistic regression model. The approximation utilizes least-squares estimates in the place of a full Bayesian Markov Chain simulation, and the equivalence of inferences based on the two implementations will be shown. A framework for flexible, semiparametric estimation of risks in the case that the assumption of logistic error is rejected will be proposed. A second application deals with regression scenarios in which residuals are correlated and their distribution evolves over an ordinal covariate such as time. In the context of prediction, such complex error distributions need to be modeled carefully and flexibly. The proposed model introduces dependent, but separate Polya tree priors for each time point, thus pooling information across time points to model gradual changes in distributional shapes. Theoretical properties of the proposed model will be outlined, and its potential predictive advantages in simulated scenarios and real data will be demonstrated.

Abstract:
Abstract: the last thirty years have been significant changes recorded in the Trade. The previously existing realities are quite different from today. The increase in purchasing power , the expectations and demands of consumers , the social reality , the availability of the time , the inclusion of women in the labour market , improving infrastructure and technological advances are some of the many factors that lead to Trade suffered significant changes and the previously existing realities are completely different from today. This dissertation analyzes how these changes have led to a growth of modern distribution in relation to traditional trade relations existing in decades ago. The aim is to study how the modern food distribution in Portugal acted face the option of hiring logistics operators and influenced its development. The development of this theme is very interesting as it seeks not only to see how grown modern distribution but also to see why, and here the binomial change in the demand versus supply plays a key role. Through data provided by experts in the field of modern distribution and through a theme framework in existing literature and statistical data, particularly with regard to the volume of turnover of modern distribution and volume of billing logistics operators in Portugal, want to check if there is a direct relationship between the strategy of modern logistics distribution and growth of logistics operators. Logistics outsourcing is so fundamental vector in the analysis carried out and that the views collected must lead to the conclusion or not that logistics operators are trained and have sufficient skills or can improve the offer so far provided. Search will be to see how the trends for the future of modern distribution are seen by the organizations under study in particular concerning the processes to implement, to improve performance, the challenges of e-commerce level and relations with suppliers. Abstract:
Practical approach to the issue of music applicability is a multi-disciplinary taking into account the complexity of working environment, personality of modern managers and the sole human nature. Musical map could serve to HR experts in building innovative programs of staff training in accordance with organization' preferences and individuals uniqueness. Recent investigations of the connection between music and motivation, music and team work, music and creativity, music and learning process, are opening numerous options for practical applicability of music in working environment aimed at increasing existing competencies and developing the new ones. The need for an increase in staff performances has imposed a need to explore how musical practice can support creation and implementation of realistic organizational goals in intercultural environment. The main goal of this doctoral thesis is to examine musical preferences and applicability of music with its positive effects on different aspects of working environment, creating thus, via empirical research, a musical map of geographical region that could be employed to increase working performance and efficiency. In order to achieve the goals defined, a field research has been conducted via structured questionnaire including 6 socio-demographic variables (gender, age, educational degree, position in the organization, sector and working experience) and 6 dependant variables (working atmosphere, efficiency in accomplishing tasks at work, motivation, learning, team work and stress reduction). The research was conducted in Serbia, on a random sample of 126 managers and employees in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Novi Pazar. The main hypothesis was that applicative music positively affects creation of proper corporative ambient and improvement of employees' competences, and was tested via 13 auxiliary hypotheses. Main empirical outcome of the Ph.D. thesis research is the determination of Serbian working population Musical Map and results of influence of certain socio-demographic and professional factors on the Musical Map Method implementation. HR staff would subsequently implement the "concept of musical map method" within its own company that is expected to increase motivation, learning and creativity as shown empirically in the study conducted. Also team work and working efficiency are expected to increase and stress at work to decrease under the proper musical exposition and all of these are explicitly shown in the thesis research results. In addition, influence of the degree of education on musical preference at work place and in general are the most surprising data, as revealed by chi square test if independence. Although general statistics of total sample on participant's opinion, speaks in favour of hypotheses confirmation expressing positive effects of music on 6 dependent variables, there are some fine differences, influenced by cardinal and derived variables, as shown by one way ANOVA test (e.g. influence of gender on opinion of positive music effects on stress reduction etc.). The final result of the thesis is the creation of the Musical Map Method that contains original approach toward creation of musical map and determination of the necessary factors that could substantially influence its implementation. Method could be applied anywhere in the Globe to produce other unique music maps as per sponsor request.

Abstract:
Pallets play a very important role in whole distribution systems through the supply chain. Such a fact alone shows the importance of pallets in today’s fast growing global logistics. Due to the increasing number of regulations and policies regarding natural resource conservations and also sustainable development, the issue of pallet utilization, reuse and recycling matters became the core concern in most of the researches performed in this field. As a consequence, the presented report discusses the current problems, requirements and debates around pallets utilization in distribution systems in depth along with the other affecting factors such as Cost, Environment, Materials, Sustainability, Information Technology and so forth. To achieve such goals, the first step is recognizing the mass Industrial production factors and global market requirements for the current and future of pallet utilization in order to achieve the desired efficiency and effectiveness in practice with focus on standardized pallets utilization in specific regions like European Union. The second step is the considering of various pallet types compatibility in different environments with respect to unit load assignments both at present and future. The third step is to challenge the obtained data and observed results and also, to verify them according to the foreseen future requirements, tendencies and demands of pallets and unit loads assignments through the international logistics providers. The last step which is as well the most important part of this thesis report is, to put the information together in order to clarify and specify the encountered difficulties regarding usage of pallets with concentration on cost, environment and ergonomic issues.

Schwartz, Brian Matthew. "Evaluation of the genetic gain in upland cotton during the twentieth century." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4906.

Full text
Abstract:
Genetic gain studies in the past have been used to evaluate the historical improvement of different traits and give insight into what magnitudes of gain might be possible in the future. Additionally, they have been carried out to defend the role of genetics during periods of stagnant or decreasing yield trends. This study was conducted over a 2-year period (2003 and 2004) and included nine current or obsolete cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cultivars grown in 5 plant densities designed to evaluate varying levels of interplant competition. Plant densities were single plant culture with plants spaced 3m x 3m, 2m x 2m, 1m x 1m, 1m x 0.3m, and two commercial populations with plants spaced 1m x 0.1m. Results were analyzed for each trait to determine whether genetic gains are interrelated with tolerance to interplant competition or strictly under genetic control. The rates of genetic gain for lint yield were highest in the 1m x 0.1m, 1m x 0.3m, and 1m x 1m treatment with slopes of 8.7, 8.2, and 7.1 kg ha-1 yr-1 respectively. The slopes were each significantly smaller in the 2m x 2m and 3m x 3m spaced populations with gains of 3.6 and 1.5 kg ha-1 yr-1 respectively, implying that for lint yield, genetic gains have been made for tolerance to interplant competition. Similarly, modern maize hybrids only out perform obsolete hybrids at higher plant densities. Genetic gain for lint yield, fiber length, fiber strength, and fiber micronaire made in the context of tolerance to interplant competition is due in large part to the excellent performance of Deltapine 491 (2002) at higher plant populations.

Aim of the master's thesis is to show businessmen possibilities, offered by Internet, of developing and searching for new distribution channels to increase sales and awareness of their companies and products. Internet is a great phenomenon. Its importance is going to increase. This development brings the growth of social network, that is going to become important means of expanding promotion and a powerful distribution channel. Unfortunately due to the speed of the present time, TV and other media the traditional means of promotion is not able to keep up with the advantages, brought by Internet commercial. The advantage and positive of the network is possibility of sharp aiming at a certain group of interest. Taxes of small and medium firms make a significant part of state incomes. Firms try to minimalize invested costs to be able to survive. Mostly the costs are connected with commercial. Thanks to Internet it is possible to nullify this aspect.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is to study what and how information flows can be used to improve Demand responsive transport (DRT) systems by understanding potential users and how they could be willing to participate in DRT to a higher degree. The viewpoint of this thesis tends to lean towards a DRT service of a public transport type. This thesis studies users in relation to what interaction and information they perceive to be needed in dealing with a DRT service and the different pros and cons with various approaches. The study gathers information by performing adapted qualitative interviews with a select number of users between the ages of 20-35. The participants give their views on three DRT scenarios and reflect on DRT in general as a concept presented to them through a tangible mocked-up interactive prototype.  The thesis makes several distinct findings. The importance of pricing a DRT service correctly is vital to the users, as several participants in the study relied on pricing for decision-making. It also finds that the usage of zones as nomenclature is confusing to many users. The services must be dependable and punctual to both attract users, keep users, and build trust among the general populace. This study shows that DRT services could be a difficult concept to introduce to users. DRT could be introduced as a complement or as an alternative to conventional public transport. An important factor is a well-designed flow of information in the application to keep the user engaged and involved. It is shown that the usability of the application is a cornerstone for a theoretical DRT service to excel. Context is important where DRT and ridesharing would have a higher success rate. Nighttime in urban areas could be a niche market, due to the irregularity, delay, or interruption of regular public transport services at these hours.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is “Study the current buying channels to meet coming trends within retailing” Three questions have been formulated to answer the purpose of this study.  1.       What are the current buying behaviours today?  2.       What is today’s buying channels within the clothing retail market? 3.       What type of buying behaviour corresponds to today's buying channels?  Method – To answer the purpose of the study, a literature study and interviews were conducted. The literature study was conducted to analyse and gather information from previously known empirical studies, research overviews which relate to the relevant research area. Five interviews were conducted with experts with different perspective of clothing retail market, to create a broader understanding of the topic. The collected data has been systematically analysed using thematic analysis. Theories surrounding the study's three research questions have been developed along the course of the study.   Findings – The study have identified the major buying behaviours and buying channels in society given the study's delimitations. The major buying behaviours which have been identified are Showrooming, webrooming and purchases made through single channel. Identified buying channels are brick-and-mortar, direct channel, e-tailer and dual channel. Channel strategies used are Omnichannel, Multi-channel and cross-channel. Trends which may continue are the continued adaptation and integration of omnichannel and cross-channel systems among retail companies. Additional trend of importance is the continued work from retail firms with seamless interaction between multiple channels. Information retrieval will be done more online, and customers are looking for an experience when they visit a store, akin to showrooms. Omnichannel integration where the customer experiences a seamless experience between the different channels have become crucial. Clothing companies focus on the experience at the store and choose to invest in fewer stores of higher quality.   Implications – The study identifies relations within buying behaviours and buying channels which may gain create a deeper understanding within the retail market. Trends which have been identified may aid retail firms understanding for consumer different behaviour. The study contributes with an understanding how consumers effect the development of buying channels, through their confirmatory role. Further research in this area can be to conduct a quantitative study to catch the trend, the strength and therefore its impact on the overall market.   Limitations – The study is limited to interviews conducted only with people located in Sweden. To gain a broader understanding, interviews can be conducted all over the world. The study is limited to five interviews. Given the limitation, more interviews of people in additional sectors may be of interest for further research.

Abstract: Healthcare-associated infections are responsible for rising health care costs, increasing morbidity, mortality, and longer hospital stays. A peculiar characteristic of such infections is the resistance of the involved microorganisms. The presence of infectious agents resistant to multiple classes of antimicrobials is increasing in such infections. Thus, multidrug resistance brings a real challenge to everyday clinical practice. Protocols for treatment of severe infections such as pneumonia and sepsis indicate the use of broad-spectrum antimicrobial associations as the initial therapy if the patient has a risk factor for resistance. Later, with the result of cultures, an adjustment of the initial therapeutic regimen would be expected. However, this process, known as de-escalation, occurs infrequently. Thus, at the moment of choosing the initial antibiotics for treating serious infectious syndromes, physicians are challenged with a dilemma: either to prescribe broad-spectrum antibiotics and contribute to increasing antibiotic resistance or to use a narrow spectrum of antimicrobials and put patients' prognosis at risk. The aim of this study was to identify potential predictors for the harboring of multidrug-resistant bacteria and to build a clinical prediction model that could help physicians to recognize patients with different risks for infection or colonization by these microorganisms. We conducted a case-cohort study in a 90-bed general hospital, at São José dos Campos, São Paulo State, Brazil, with all patients that performed at least one culture (753 patients). Cases were defined as patients that had had a culture demonstrating a multi-resistant agent (146 patients). Controls were all other patients that had had at least one culture. The consensus definition from the Center for Disease Control and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control was used to describe antibiotic multi-resistance. Fourteen traditional risk factors were evaluated as predictors. We constructed three clinical prediction models: logistical regression, classification tree, and random forest. In the logistical regression model, due to severe collinearity, we chose to eliminate variables by the backward method. In this model, for internal validation, we used the bootstrap resampling procedure. The new model was calibrated with the use of a shrinkage factor of 0.91. Similarly, the classification tree and random forest models identified that the most important variables for prediction were: admission history of 180 days, tube feeding, and length of hospital stay before culture, Charlson comorbidity index, central venous catheter, and tracheostomy. A temporal external validation was performed with a new sample collected between July and December 2011, with 342 patients. The accuracies of logistic regression, classification tree and random forest models were evaluated by ROC (Receiver operating characteristic) curves. The areas under the curve were 72.4%, 66.2% and 69.2%, respectively. The final logistical regression model with the overall study population (1092 patients) is described and shows an optimism-corrected area under the ROC curve of 77.1%

Stirling, Scott. "The neo-diaspora : examining the subcultural codes of hip-hop and contemporary urban trends in the work of Kudzanai Chiurai and Robin Rhode." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002219.

Abstract:
This thesis is structured around an exploration of the global phenomenon hip-hop. It considers how its far-reaching effects, as a cultural export from the United States, have influenced cultural production in South Africa. The investigation focuses specifically on the work of two visual artists: Zimbabwean born, Johannesburg-based Kudzanai Chiurai, and Cape Town born, Berlin-based Robin Rhode. The introduction familiarises the reader with the two artists and briefly outlines their histories and methods, as well as giving a short history of the development of hip-hop as a subculture from its beginnings in 1970s New York. The first chapter follows this brief introduction to outline some of the parallels, especially concerning race relations, between 1970s America and post-apartheid contemporary South Africa. This comparison aims to highlight similarities that gave rise to the hip-hop phenomenon and which also place South Africa in a prime position to welcome such influences. The second half of the chapter explores how migration theory and issues of diaspora have not only influenced the development of hip-hop, but have also become points of focus for both artists, who are in fact disporans themselves. The second chapter explores ‘ground level’ concerns of everyday life in the city. Issues of crime, gangsterism, politics and activism are characterised as focal elements of Chiurai’s and Rhode’s artwork and also of hip-hop musical content. Inner city contexts in different parts of the globe are compared through a discussion of the art and music that come out of them. This comparison of the philosophical and conceptual content of the art and music is extended, in Chapter three, into a comparison of methods of production, considering how these influence various readings of the artistic output, whether musical or visual. Ideas of authenticity are discussed and finally the focus shifts to explore how both the conceptual and practical concerns of musicians and artists are being shaped by an increasingly ‘globalized’ world. The conclusion explores the challenges that globalization poses to cultural practitioners and seeks to highlight some of the artists’ methods as examples with which to facilitate the growth of a more inclusive global aesthetic.
