Mensah, Albert Kobby. "Political brand management : forms and strategies in modern party politics." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2276/.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of branding is known within the commercial world as the marketing tool that enables customers to make product and service choices using functional and emotional attributes which they find satisfactory. These functional and emotional attributes are what is conceptualized by producers as brands. Hence, the traditional notion of the brand as an identifier and differentiator is passed on to the political market, according to the literature on political branding. However, many years into the inquest of political branding as an essential part of our electoral processes, agreement on political brand development is still proving elusive. In the literature, there are different views on how the political brand is developed. Some argue for political brand identity management based on policy attributes, whereas others regard candidate attributes as the essential source. This research argues for the amalgamation of all the three political elements: the party, the policy, and the candidate as a comprehensive source of building a political brand that is responsive to prevailing political market conditions. Using a case study of a political party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the research aims to demonstrate how party values are considered to be an integral part to policy and candidate attributes in building a comprehensive political brand identity. Here, the study does not imply that the NPP deliberately used branding as a set of principles in managing its campaign. However, it proposes that the strategies and the tactics with which the party executed its electioneering campaign parallels the brand architecture concept in marketing, given the way it identified roles for the three political elements (the party, the candidate, and the policy) and occasionally rearranged them to reflect the broader party goals. The research therefore borrows from brand management literature the brand architecture‘ concept to guide its analysis and the eventual development of a parallel model, the political brand architecture (PBA)‘ approach for political brand management.

Abstract:
Knowledge management (KM) is vital for an organization to succeed in a highly dynamic and competitive world. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use to effectively integrate KM into business practices. The study population comprised 5 managers from 2 SMEs operating in Uganda. The eligibility criteria for this study were that participants had to be from Ugandan SMEs with a knowledge-intensive environment, managers with some responsibility of KM in the organization, and experienced with at least 1 year of successful KM practices. The conceptual framework for this study was theory z. Data were collected through face-to-face, semistructured interviews and reviews of company documents. Member checking was completed to strengthen credibility and trustworthiness. After methodological triangulation of the data sources collected and completion of Yin's 5-step process of data analysis, 5 themes emerged: having supportive leadership, ensuring sustainability, embedding KM practices in the organization culture, socialization, and embracing modern technology. The findings of this study might promote social change by supporting SME managers' use of KM to expand opportunities for employees to learn new skills and knowledge leading to the expansion of employment opportunities.

Smith, Jacques. "Constructing low cost core-satellite portfolios with multiple risk constraints: practical applications to Robo advising in South Africa using active, passive and smart-beta strategies." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32985.

Abstract:
Risk and tracking error budgeting was originally adopted by large institutional investors, including pension funds, plan sponsors, foundations, and endowments. More recently, risk and tracking error budgeting have gained popularity among financial advisors, multi-managers, fund of funds managers, high net worth individuals as well as retail investors. These techniques contribute to the portfolio optimisation process by limiting the extent to which a portfolio can deviate from its benchmark with regards to risk and tracking error. This is an ambitious paper that attempts to determine the optimal strategy to practically implement risk and tracking error budgeting as a portfolio optimisation technique in South Africa. This study attempts to bridge the gap between active, passive, and smart-beta investment management styles by introducing a low-cost portfolio construction technique, for core-satellite portfolio management, which contributes to the risk and tracking error budgeting process. Core-satellite portfolios are designed to expose the portfolio to a low-cost primary “core” consisting of passive and enhanced index funds, thus systematic risk “beta”, limiting the tracking error of the portfolio. The secondary “satellite” component is allocated to active and smart-beta managers to exploit expected excess return “alpha”. The primary aim of this research is to construct a rule-based product range of core-satellite portfolios called “replica portfolios”. The product range builds on the foundation of the Association for Savings & Investments South Africa (ASISA) framework. The study identifies three “target portfolios” from ASISA's framework, namely (1) High Risk: SA General Equity, (2) Medium Risk: SA Multi-Asset High Equity and (3) Low Risk: SA Multi-Asset Low Equity. Through this framework, active managers from each category are shortlisted using a Sharpe and Information Ratio filter. A secondary filtering technique, namely Returns Based Style Analysis (RBSA) is used to determine the style, R-squared and alpha-generating ability of active managers versus the passive asset classes and style indices they seek to replicate. Applying Euler's theorem for homogenous functions, we decompose the risk of the coresatellite portfolio into the risk contributed by each of its components. The primary mandate of the core-satellite portfolios in the product range is to allocate risk and tracking error efficiently across several investment management styles and asset classes in order to maximise returns while remaining within the specified risk parameters. iii The results highlighted that active managers, after fees, predominantly failed to outperform their benchmarks and passive building blocks, as identified through RBSA over the sample period (October 2009 – September 2019). However, only a small number of active managers generated superior risk-adjusted returns and were included in the core-satellite range of products. This study recommends to investors that they exploit the “hot-hands effect” by investing in specialised, benchmark agnostic active managers who consistently produce superior risk-adjusted returns. By blending active, passive and smart-beta strategies, investors are exposed to less total risk, less risk per holding and a lower tracking error. The three coresatellite portfolios developed in this study generated absolute and risk-adjusted returns that are more significant than their active and passive counterparts. Fee arbitrage was derived through the range of core-satellite products, resulting in tangible alpha over the sample period. The study encourages investors to use smart-beta strategies alongside active and passive funds since it improves Sharpe and Information ratios while enhancing the original portfolio's characteristics.

Abstract:
The target of this dissertation thesis is to verify a relationship between strategic planning and prosperity of the company. Opinions of many experts about expediency of strategic planning vary. Some believe that strategic planning is a base for successful growth, while others demonstrate through results of many different researches that a direct relationship between strategic planning and success of the company cannot be proven. Therefore an empirical research was made to test hypotheses about the impact of strategic planning on prosperity of the company. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the development of strategic management followed by a description of internal and external business environments and the impacts which influence them. The theoretical part also describes the characteristics of strategic management and planning, tools and models as well as methods for measurement of efficiency of strategic planning. As the sub-target of this thesis is also to propose a simplified model of strategic planning which could be applied in small and medium size companies, the theoretical part is concluded by description of specifics of small and medium size companies. The analytical part of the thesis consists of detailed analyses of data collected through questionnaires. Based on results of those analyses, profiles of different categories of companies are synthesized. Conclusions of performed analyses and syntheses are used as a base for testing of validity of defined hypotheses. A new concept of the “4-segments model” of strategic planning is presented in the proposal part of the thesis. Benefits for theory and for practical use are evaluated at the end of the thesis.

Abstract:
The goal of the thesis is to develop a model to valuate and prioritize development projects to ensure that the project portfolio is in line with strategy. To reach the goal the report was given the purpose to explain a process and which management control instruments and valuation parameters that creates a project portfolio management process that is connected to strategy. The background is based both in theory and empirically, which was ensured during the pre-study. The empirical background can be summed up in four main points: a) Businesses experience a lack of overview regarding how projects contribute strategy. b) Businesses wish for increased transparency regarding how strategic valuations and prioritization are being made. c) When external factors incorporated in strategy is changing it does not mean the all projects are re-valuated. d) When projects grow to be gradually more complex there is a tendency of not revaluating, hence resulting in trouble allocating resources for the project.A pre-study was conducted which showed that research finds a gap between strategy and how project portfolios are managed and that gap needs to be further examined. To fill the gap and answer to the empirical challenges a theoretically developed model has been developed combined with a model of analysis which was the foundation of the analysis of empirical data. The empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews from three different companies on corporate level as well from business level in one of the companies. This report has resulted in a process, management control components and parameters to be able to evaluate and prioritize project in a portfolio. The process consists of the steps identifying, clustering, balancing, selecting, prioritizing, optimizing, sequencing, deciding and evaluating. Meanwhile, guidelines, budget, performance measurement with goals and strategic perspectives are suitable formats for transferring strategy into the project portfolio management process. To handle point a) and b) above the study suggests that the process steps identifying, Clustering and balancing are used to place the projects in the appropriate portfolio and by that facilitate balance between projects and initiatives. To ensure transparency and enable overview the process needs to be formal and followed by the users. Regarding point c) and d) it is suggested that the project portfolio management process need to be adjusted for compatibility with the strategy development process and that projects.

Abstract:
In the first half of the XXth century, both logical empiricists and popperian rationalists sustained that correct scientific judgements derived from the conformation to certain rules: inductive, deductive, hypothetical-deductive or formalizable according to the calculation of probabilities. However, mainly because of Thomas Kuhn’s works, there was an extensive development of approaches that analyze the scientific inference based on values, rather than on a priori established rules. The proposal of Kuhn considers the scientific practice and history as elements of relevance to the comprehension of science’s rationality. His approach considers cognitive values, such as fecundity, consistence, and scope of theories. Expanding this approach, recent studies – starting in the 90s and with great effervescence in recent years – defend the thesis that scientific knowledge, besides being a product of social activity, features an intrinsic social dimension. We could ask, in what measure noncognitive values, such as moral and social values, shape the scientific practice; and how these values could exercise a legitimate role, or even contribute to the production of knowledge. These questions involve the currently quite significant (cf. Longino, 2015) problem called “social dimension of the scientific knowledge”. In this work, I approach the mentioned question regarding the relation between values and the scientific activity, using the approach of the philosopher of science Hugh Lacey, and applying it to a specific background: the possibilities of the productive use of the south Brazilian native grasslands, know Campos Sulinos.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Relationship Marketing can be defined as an ongoing process of identifying and creating new value with individual customers, and then sharing that value over a lifetime of business association. The definition incorporates a number of key concepts such as long-term commitment, open and ongoing communication, trust and interdependence, collaboration and cooperation, as well as total organisational commitment. A wide range of models and strategies describe the processes and underlying constructs and clearly distinguishes between an organisational process and a behavioral process. The organisational approach focuses on the key organisational processes, technology, culture and values as well as corporate commitment needed to make this a success. The behavioral approach focuses on the key behavioral constructs needed for successful relationship management between buyer and seller, or manufacturer and retailer, for example ongoing communication, joint planning and performance evaluation, and trust and commitment. Customer satisfaction is highlighted as a key driver of the relationship management process and a number of cases clearly indicate that satisfied customers are needed for successful Relationship Marketing. It is not only about the wining and dining, but more about adding real value that will make customers commit their lifetime business. Relationship Marketing in a monopolistic market is discussed and the question is asked why any business should implement a relationship management process when that business is dominating the market. It is quite obvious that the benefits of a relationship marketing approach will drive customer value and satisfaction to higher levels and that the future lies in retaining customers and not recruiting new customers all the time. Even in monopolistic market situations organisations will try to increase or protect market share and developing long-term relationships with customers might just provide that competitive edge needed. Relationship Marketing is clearly not only about behavioral issues ,or on the other hand about organisational systems. It is an integrated approach incorporating all key organisational processes and systems which needs to be cemented in the corporate culture and values of the business. It is also an approach that advocate very specific behavioral constructs for example trust and commitment. - Any organisation that plans to incorporate a relationship marketing approach, needs to focus on the behavioral as well as organisational aspects of business.

Abstract:
Business Process Management (BPM) maturity models are tools that help organizations in determining the capabilities required to progress in their BPM ambitions. However, the disparity of key components across different maturity models and lack of assessment tools to gauge maturity, limits the applicability of the models. Following Design Science Research and Content Analysis methods, this research presents two artifacts to address these issues: (i) a meta-model that captures the structure of BPM maturity models and (ii) a maturity grid for BPM Strategic-Alignment capabilities as an example of a ‘ready to use’ assessment tool to measure BPM maturity in organizations.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to evaluate the process management in a research and development institution as one of the strategic objectives of its management model, as well as to identify its level of evolution and characteristics in comparison to a company guided by process. The present case study was accomplished in the National Agricultural Instrumentation Research Center – CNPDIA, one of the forty units of research of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa, research and development institution linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, one of the largest institutions of research of the tropical world, present in almost all the States of the Federation, in the most different ecological conditions, contributing to the success of the agribusiness and of the maintainable development. A bibliographical revision on the importance of the process management for a strategic vision was carried out. The main differences between companies structured by function and companies structured by process and also the main difficulties of a transition for process were investigated. Through the analysis of documents and reports presented by the company, interviews related to the theme with managers and employees of the company, and the study of the Model of Strategic Management – MGE - adopted, in which interferes the process management as one of its strategic objectives and confronting with the theory, this case study evaluated as the company is structuring to meet to the needs and challenges presented in that context of changes, which force the organizations reanalyze and readjust their management models and their organizational structures to maintain itself alive in that competitive environment. The results obtained in this research demonstrate that the unit, although presenting several indicative of change of organizational structure for more flexible models, it is going by a transition phase, characterizing a learning for all involved them and, mainly, that the resistances presented to that new management model proposed they are being reduced for consequence of the adoption of the concepts and of the largest knowledge on the part of the executives and employees, on the approach of process.

Abstract:
This thesis is entitled The Role of Management in the Turnaround Process and is presented for the degree of Doctor of Business Administration at the University of Manchester by Ian Roberts in April 2015. Inquiry into turnaround has largely has been carried forward in two broad areas of study: strategy and management. Strategy research has attempted to identify a single or limited number of strategies which apply in all turnaround situations, while management studies have concentrated on managers themselves or some of the techniques they employ. Neither school has systematically analysed how turnarounds are actually implemented in dysfunctional organisations and both schools are weak in extant theory. As a consequence, a holistic explanation of the process leading from crisis to viability is lacking. This thesis addresses these lacunae in three ways. Firstly, it provides a systematic study of how professional turnaround managers implement the turnaround process over time. Secondly, it applies a unique and complementary mix of extant theory which addresses both cognitive and organisational aspects of strategy formulation and implementation. Thirdly, it presents a holistic turnaround model based on six core constructs which are argued to be necessary and sufficient to explain the dynamics of the turnaround process. The thesis adopts a mixed-methods approach. A survey is used in order to gather data from turnaround professionals on implementation methods. This data is then subjected to statistical analysis in order to identify the most important factors for implementation. These concepts are then blended into a conceptual framework which is tested for its explanatory and predictive power on a matched pair of turnaround case studies of two mid-sized UK manufacturing companies in the household goods sector, one of which executed a successful turnaround and one of which failed in the attempt. The model is able to explain and predict the outcome in both cases. The thesis is one of only a handful of turnaround studies which employs a rigorous case study research protocol. Its principal contribution is that of a middle range turnaround theory of the causal factors leading from organisational crisis to dissolution or viability.

Sperling, Brian Keith. "Information Sharing Strategies To Improve Team Mental Models In Complex Systems." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/6975.

Abstract:
This thesis hypothesizes that providing task specific information to individual team members will improve coordination and decision-making, and therefore team performance, at time critical tasks. Major themes addressed in this research include teams and team processes, mental models, team mental models, work domain analysis, and hierarchical task analysis. Furthermore, the theory behind the development of complementary models is introduced. A unique method to identify the information sources and requirements in a complex team environment is first discussed in general and then specifically applied in two domains. The findings are presented of two experiments examining the effects of imposing different information distribution strategies that range from no complementariness to full complementariness of information. Team communication, team and individual task performance, workload, and timeliness and effectiveness of team decision making were assessed in nominal and off-nominal conditions. The first experiment used an automobile simulator and examined team navigation while driving. A second experiment was designed to incorporate additional measures to more specifically investigate individual performance, team workload, and clarity of information requirements using a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter simulator. The procedures used for both experiments provided for dynamic yet controlled environments through which critical factors that influence team process and performance could be evaluated accurately. Results of these experiments provide empirical evidence that providing task relevant information to individual team members in a time critical environment, while limiting their access to non-relevant information, improves individual and team performance. Furthermore, there is evidence of increased individual performance that indicates this method of distributing information among team members may provide individual crewmembers with a more accurate task relevant mental model of their own environment. This research provides new insight into how the distribution of information among team members effects the development of mental models, information requirements, team and individual performance, and communications, and highlights several directions for future research. The information distribution design principles presented in this thesis address the heterogeneity of teams; teams cannot be thought of as groups of identical individuals. The results concerning the communication, workload, performance and team of mental models were consistent across the domains in this research.

Porter, Rosalyn. "Mathematical models of a tick borne disease in a British game bird with potential management strategies." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3039.

Full text
Abstract:
Louping ill virus (LIV) is a tick borne disease that causes mortality in red grouse, an economically important game bird of British uplands. The aim of this thesis is to extend previously published models of LIV , to consider the potential impact of different management strategies. In addition a new route of infection and the seasonal biology of both grouse and ticks will be explored. Grouse chicks are known to eat ticks as part of their diet in the first three weeks of life which may contribute to virus persistence if chicks consume infected ticks. This novel route of infection is incorporated in to the model which predicts that ingestion increases the range of host densities for which the virus is able to persist. The ingestion of ticks by grouse also reduces the tick population so that for low host densities the ingestion of ticks by grouse reduces the tick population so virus cannot persist. The model is adapted to take account of the seasonal biology of grouse and ticks. Although the temporal predictions of the seasonal models show some differences the addition of seasonality does not alter the model predictions of when LIV is likely to persist at different grouse and deer densities. Consequently seasonality is felt to be unimportant when considering management strategies. The treatment of sheep with acaricide in an attempt to reduce the tick population on a grouse moor is currently being trialled in Scotland. We use a model to predict the likely effect of this strategy at different deer densities. The number of ticks found attached to sheep varies so we consider the effect of tick attachment rates as well as acaricide efficacy. Although we predict that acaricide treated sheep can reduce the tick population and therefore LIV in grouse in some circumstances the treatment is less effective in the presence of deer. Consequently we use a model to make theoretical predictions of the effectiveness of acaricide treated deer as a control strategy for reducing LIV in red grouse. The effect of culling deer on LIV in grouse is also modelled and contrasted with the effect of acaricide use. It is predicted that acaricide treatment of deer could be highly effective, particularly if the deer density is first reduced by culling. Finally we considered the direct treatment of red grouse with acaricide. Female grouse can be given an acaricidal leg band which protects her directly and indirectly protects her chicks as they acquire some acaricide whilst brooding. Trials have suggested this can reduce tick burdens for individuals. We use the model to determine the potential effect that treating individual broods may have on the whole grouse population. The model predictions suggest that unless acaricide efficacy on chicks is high and long lasting treating individual broods is unlikely to reduce LIV in the whole population but will still provide some benefit for the individuals. The effectiveness of treatment is reduced by higher deer densities. The success of the management strategies considered in this thesis appear to be restricted by the presence of deer. It may therefore be that a combination of treatments including the treatment of deer may be of the greatest benefit to the grouse population.

Abstract:
Enterprise is often described as risk for reward, but it may be possible to reduce the risk while improving returns. According to SEDA, failure rates of SMMEs in South Africa range from 70 to 80 percent. The need for this study arose when it was found that most SMMEs did not have a formal system in place to mitigate their risks right from the outset in the feasibility study, the business plan design and the start–up of the business. This lack of mitigation controls could be a result of a lack of understanding of the enterprise risk management (ERM) methodology or an inappropriate ERM decision–making model to assist them in a way that would mitigate their risk and minimise financial losses. The ERM approach can anticipate unplanned occurrences and is a systematic way of foreseeing the future. Entrepreneurs and business owners take on risks to pursue new business objectives within their respective risk appetites. This study also evaluated several models of risk identification and the ERM methodology. In this study an ERM model, ISO 31000, was applied in a business case and a comparison was made between the risks identified in the business plan and the ERM approach.

In recent years the video game industry has been of great importance in the business world beyond the role of a cultural medium. With its huge size and potential for more growth, the industry has attracted many newcomers. The target customers are expanding to females and elders who have not been known to be game players. Moreover, the introduction of new platforms, personal computers and mobile devices, broadens the application of the video games. Because of its diversified mechanisms and platforms, the business models of the gaming industry have evolved. In this thesis, the traditional and newly invented business models are introduced with an analysis of pros and cons through real cases of gaming companies. The analysis of Activision-Blizzard and Electronic Arts shows the current business strategies of two giants in the industry, "diversification" and "casual games". Moreover, the huge difference of financial performances of two companies indicates the risk of an overbroad portfolio and investment in an unfamiliar genre.

Abstract:
Urban watershed management poses a very challenging problem due to the varioussources of pollution and there is a need to develop optimal management models that canfacilitate the process of identifying optimal water quality management strategies. Ascreening level, comprehensive, and integrated computational methodology is developedfor the management of point and non-point sources of pollution in urban watersheds. Themethodology is based on linking macro-level water quality simulation models withefficient nonlinear constrained optimization methods for urban watershed management. The use of macro-level simulation models in lieu of the traditional and complexdeductive simulation models is investigated in the optimal management framework forurban watersheds. Two different types of macro-level simulation models are investigatedfor application to watershed pollution problems namely explicit inductive models andsimplified deductive models. Three different types of inductive modeling techniques areused to develop macro-level simulation models ranging from simple regression methodsto more complex and nonlinear methods such as artificial neural networks and geneticfunctions. A new genetic algorithm (GA) based technique of inductive modelconstruction called Fixed Functional Set Genetic Algorithm (FFSGA) is developed andused in the development of macro-level simulation models. A novel simplified deductivemodel approach is developed for modeling the response of dissolved oxygen in urbanstreams impaired by point and non-point sources of pollution. The utility of this inverseloading model in an optimal management framework for urban watersheds isinvestigated. In the context of the optimization methods, the research investigated the use of parallelmethods of optimization for use in the optimal management formulation. These includedan evolutionary computing method called genetic optimization and a modified version ofthe direct search method of optimization called the Shuffled Box Complex method ofconstrained optimization. The resulting optimal management model obtained by linkingmacro-level simulation models with efficient optimization models is capable ofidentifying optimal management strategies for an urban watershed to satisfy waterquality and economic related objectives. Finally, the optimal management model isapplied to a real world urban watershed to evaluate management strategies for waterquality management leading to the selection of near-optimal strategies.

Santana, Reynoso Alfredo. "Decision Aid Models for Resource Sharing Strategies During Global Influenza Pandemics." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3331.

Full text
Abstract:
Pandemic influenza outbreaks have historically entailed significant societal and economic disruptions. Today, our quality of life is threatened by our inadequate preparedness for the imminent pandemic. The key challenges we are facing stem from a significant uncertainty in virus epidemiology, limited response resources, inadequate international collaboration, and the lack of appropriate science-based decision support tools. The existing literature falls short of comprehensive models for global pandemic spread and mitigation which incorporate the heterogeneity of the world regions and realistic travel networks. In addition, there exist virtually no studies which quantify the impact of resource sharing strategies among multiple countries. This dissertation presents three related models that contribute to filling the existing vacuum. The first model develops optimal capacity management strategies for multi-region pandemic surveillance. The second model estimates the pandemic propagation time from the onset to a likely pandemic export region, such as a major transportation hub. The model builds on a large-scale agent-based simulation and geographic information systems (GIS). The model is tested on a hypothetical outbreak in Mexico involving 155 regions and over 100 million people. The third model develops an empirical relationship to quantify the impact of various U.S. - Mexico antiviral sharing strategies under several pandemic detection and response scenarios.

Abstract:
Abstract Radio spectrum is a scarce natural resource whose efficient management has been the source of contentious debate for over a century. The mobile communication ecosystem has created a tremendous business that is reliant on the availability of spectrum for wireless networks. The growth of mobile communications has increased the rivalry between the different wireless ecosystems that compete over gaining access rights to radio spectrum. Due to the scarcity of unallocated spectrum bands without incumbent users, sharing-based governance models for spectrum management have gained increasing attention in regulation, industry and academia. Spectrum sharing allows two or more wireless systems to operate in the same spectrum band. These systems often come from different wireless ecosystems that have conflicting goals. Spectrum sharing, and specifically the development of new sharing-based governance models for more efficient management of the scarce resource, is a strategic management topic that calls for the development of rules and conditions by regulators that are agreeable to all involved stakeholders. This thesis presents a novel framework for the development of upcoming sharing-based spectrum governance models that bring together stakeholders from different wireless business ecosystems with conflicting goals. The framework is built upon the theoretical basis of governance models, stakeholder analysis, and business ecosystems. Spectrum management is here seen as governance of common pool resources, and the tool of stakeholder analysis from strategic management is formally introduced into the development of new sharing-based spectrum governance models where different business ecosystems collide. The developed three-step stakeholder analysis is applied to two case studies for mobile communications including the future use of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band, and the licensed shared access (LSA) concept. For the UHF band case study, the thesis identifies the stakeholders, analyses their relations and saliences to reach long-term compromises between broadcasting and mobile communication ecosystems. For the LSA case study, the thesis identifies the stakeholders and their relations, and develops management actions through a work flow for the main phases and stakeholders’ tasks. It then presents the world’s first live field trial with mobile communication systems, where the conflicting requirements of all stakeholders were considered. The developed stakeholder analysis model formally introduces the strategic management of stakeholders into the spectrum management domain, and it provides regulators, industry and academia a new tool for reaching long-term compromises in spectrum management through sharing
Tiivistelmä Radiotaajuudet muodostavat rajallisen luonnonvaran, jonka tehokas hallinta on ollut vuosikymmenten ajan kiistanalainen keskustelunaihe. Matkaviestinnän ekosysteemi on luonut suurta liiketoimintaa saamalla käyttöönsä radiotaajuuksia, joilla matkaviestinverkot voivat toimia. Matkaviestinnän kasvu on lisännyt eri langattomien järjestelmien ekosysteemien välistä kilpailua radiotaajuuksien saatavuudesta. Taajuuksien yhteiskäyttöön perustuvat hallintamallit ovat herättäneet kasvavaa kiinnostusta taajuushallinnoissa, teollisuudessa ja tutkimusmaailmassa, koska lähes kaikki radiotaajuudet on jo annettu erilaisten langattomien järjestelmien käyttöön. Taajuuksien yhteiskäyttö mahdollistaa kahden tai useamman radiojärjestelmän toiminnan samalla taajuusalueella. Usein nämä järjestelmät edustavat erilaisia langattomia ekosysteemejä, joilla on ristiriitaiset tavoitteet.

Abstract:

The authors of this thesis have found that, during the last years, the world has witnessed a dramatic explosion of articles and books about the concept Talent Management. These books and articles, all emphasise the urgency for companies to adopt the concept and the devastating consequences if they don’t. The concept is by many re-searchers seen to be the top issue and, the latest trend within Human Resource Management.

Nevertheless, throughout the history of the personnel profession the world has witnessed several different concepts such as Personnel Management, Human Resource Management, and Strategic Human Resource Management and several researches have claimed that these concepts describes the same thing. Some researchers have argued that the different concept instead represent a continuous rhetoric struggle by HR professionals to enhance their legitimacy and status by becoming more business oriented and demonstrate that employees indeed can make a difference in distinguish-ing successful organizations from others.

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the underlying reasoning and logic to why companies adopt talent management and explore what the concept represents in terms of new knowledge.

By comparing traditional theories of HRM and HR planning with normative literature and interviews on Talent Management the authors have found that the concept does not represent any new and distinctive knowledge, but rather can be considered as an effort to repackage old ideas and techniques with a new label. The authors of this thesis believe that Talent Management is another illustration of the struggle by HR professionals to enhance their legitimacy and status in their organization.

Abstract:
The purchasing department in companies has been faced with the need to become more efficient and effective in their acquisitions, so organizations have joined the use of strategic tools appropriate to their shopping needs. Therefore, this study aimed at proposing a purchasing management model of materials and services in a private company in Mato Grosso agribusiness animal nutrition, aligned to its strategies. For this purpose, work was structured in two articles. The first article it was done an analysis in the shopping process practiced for the company, to check the alignment of the materials and services sector of the management model to business strategies, through the purchasing process mapping and a semi structured interview with the company´s management responsible for the area, in order to verify the alignment process used, with the company's strategies. On the second article, took place on purchasing management model proposition of materials and services for the company, starting from the strategic needs identified on the first article and the survey of the main models of strategic management purchases of materials and services available in the literature. A strategic model of purchasing management for the company under investigation, it was structured through a SIPOC diagram and a detailed flow chart of the process and subsequently validated by the company´s staff. There was thus, as a result, a management model able to align the purchasing department of materials and services to the company's strategies. The model contains, in addition to detailing the stages of the buying process, the proposed of use of strategic purchasing tools appropriate to the company profile, such as the Mother of Kraljic (1983) combined with the model of Ogden (2003), both adapted to the analyzed context .

Abstract:
Over the last century, there has been growing interest in changing the approach to maintenance management. The current practice for selecting critical equipment and making a decision on the most appropriate maintenance strategy is perceived to have serious limitations, principally because it lacks decision analysis. Due to the complex nature of decision-making in maintenance management, different models have been developed for selecting critical equipment. However, many of these models considered maintenance management as operational concern and ignored the strategic concerns of maintenance management. This thesis builds upon earlier works on decision-making for selecting critical equipment and maintenance strategy. It sets out to construct three hypotheses by introducing evidence from a comprehensive literature review, case study analysis and in-depth interviews. The thesis focuses on artificial intelligence and multi-criteria decision-making techniques (i.e. Fuzzy Logic and Analytical Hierarchy Process) to bridge this gap. It proposes a strategic decision-making model in maintenance and asset management for selecting critical equipment and deciding on a maintenance strategy. The novelty of model is to propose an approach in which maintenance strategy can be applied based on the equipment criticality while not making a trade-off between safety and cost but rather to combine the concern of safety with financial, operational and technical perspectives. The model provides an opportunity to consider safety as the first priority. The research output suggests that existing criticality assessment methods for optimising maintenance delivery have limited value and are suffering from a lack of strategic decision analysis. Multi-criteria decision-making tools could be used to improve decision-making of criticality assessment methods and hence maintenance strategy implementation. The validity of the proposed strategic decision-making model was tested through case study analysis and in-depth interviews. The results suggest that a strategic decision-making model could have a significant impact on improving safety, reliability and operational availability. The strategic decision-making model would enable asset managers to track the consequences of their decisions whilst dealing with maintenance. It is also an effective tool in the hands of a maintenance department to convince their asset managers to make a maintenance investment.

Haule, Henrick Joseph. "Evaluation of Traffic Incident Timeline to Quantify the Performance of Incident Management Strategies." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/791.

Full text
Abstract:
Transportation agencies are introducing new strategies and techniques that will improve traffic incident management. Apart from other indicators, agencies measure the performance of the strategies by evaluating the incidents timeline. An effective strategy has to reduce the length of the incident timeline. An incident timeline comprises various stages in the incident management procedure, starting when the incident was detected, and ending when there is the recovery of normal traffic conditions. This thesis addresses three issues that are related to the traffic incident timeline and the incident management strategies. First, co-location of responding agencies has not been investigated as other incident management measures. Co-location of incident responders affects the incident timeline, but there is a scarcity of literature on the magnitude of the effects. Evaluation of the co-location strategy is reflected by the response and verification durations because its effectiveness relies on improving communication between agencies. Investigation of the response and verification duration of incidents, before and after operations of a co-located Traffic Management Center (TMC) is done by using hazard-based models. Results indicate that the incident type, percentage of the lane closure, number of responders, incident severity, detection methods, and day-of-the-week influence the verification duration for both the before- and after- period. Similarly, incident type, lane closure, number of responders, incident severity, time-of-the-day, and detection method influence the response duration for both study periods. The before and after comparison shows significant improvements in the response duration due to co-location of incident response agencies. Second, the incident clearance duration may not necessarily reflect how different types of incidents and various factors affect traffic conditions. The duration at which the incident influences traffic conditions could vary – shorter than the incident duration for some incidents and longer for others. This study introduces a performance measure called incident impact duration and demonstrates a method that was used for estimating it. Also, this study investigated the effects of using incident impact duration compared to the traditionally incident clearance duration in incident modeling. Using hazard-based models, the study analyzed factors that affect the estimated incident impact duration and the incident clearance duration. Results indicate that incident detection methods, the number of responders, Traffic Management Center (TMC) operations, traffic conditions, towing and emergency services influence the duration of an incident. Third, elements of the incident timeline before the clearance duration have been overlooked as factors that influence the clearance duration. Incident elements before the clearance duration include verification time, dispatch duration, and the travel time of responders to the incident scene. This study investigated the influence of incident timeline elements before clearance on the extent of the clearance duration. Also, this study analyzed the impact of other spatial and temporal attributes on the clearance duration. The analysis used a Cox regression model that is estimated using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) penalization method. LASSO enables variable selection from incidents data with a high number of covariates by automatically and simultaneously selecting variables and estimating the coefficients. Results suggest that verification duration, response travel duration, the percentage of lane closure, incident type, the severity of an incident, detection method, and crash location influence the clearance duration.

Abstract:
With its origins almost a half century ago and a heyday experienced during the last 20 years, \"Business model\" is a term frequently present in academic and commonplace talks. Despite this massive use, it seems that not much clarity exists on its understanding in both circuits, in many cases taken it for granted. References in literature speak about lack of consensus about basic issues in its definition, until not long ago. Other authors speak about a paradoxical situation due its huge popularity in domains related to practice, together with its use in countless academics publications, and some kind of reluctance by some scholarly sectors. Finally, some authors manifest themselves as hopeful with the achieved advances in the search of a business model construct as robust and susceptible of progress on its use in research. Facing this panorama, the present study propose to itself, on one side, to do a review about the main approaches discussed until today, with the intention of getting closer, in the best manner, to its comprehension, and by other side, to explore in field, the topics identified on the review, conducting multiple-case studies in three organizations related to Brazil\'s technology sector. Resorting to a systematic bibliographic search in scientific bases as Web of Science, Scopus, Scholar Google and CAPES journals portal; an approximation to State of Art about the topic is presented and a construct about business model is proposed. As a result, it was identified that elements as \"Value\", \"Activities\", and \"Revenue model\" are important to define the concept. Functions as alignment, strategic formulation and analysis, and exploration-exploitation, were identified. Properties as mutability, dynamism and imitability are presented and discussed. Because of its importance, a section is devoted to the discussion about the relationship between strategy and business model. Applying the case study method and its specific analytical tools, we answered some questions. In general, it can be said that the studies conducted in field corroborate many of the ideas stated in the theory reviewed, although some differences and new insights also appeared. In the end are presented all the considerations derived from the data interpretation in the research, its limitations, and future research suggestions. Regarding that contributions in this direction, allow to clarify even more the understanding about business model, by exploring their theoretical underpinnings and their conceptualizations in practice, we hope that the study will contribute to the debate and research line undertaken globally, and also, subsidize with its findings to future research in Strategic Management and other related research streams.

Abstract:
Organizations with multiple operating requirements require support functions to assist in execution of strategic goals. This effort, in turn, requires management of engineering activities in control of projects and in sustaining facilities. High level strategies include employing engineering support that consists of a project management function encompassing technical and managerial disciplines. The architecture/engineering, and construction office (AEC) is the subject of this research. Engineering and construction oriented organizations have experienced challenges to their abilities to learn and grow. This has potential detrimental implications for these organizations if support functions cannot keep pace with changing objectives and strategy. The competitive nature and low industry margins as well as uniqueness of projects as challenges facing engineering and construction. The differentiated nature of projects tasks also creates a need for temporary and dedicated modes of operation and thereby tends to promote highly dispersed management practices that do not dovetail very well with other organizational processes. Organizational learning is a means to enhance and support knowledge management for improving performance. The problem addressed through this research is the gap between desired and achieved individual and group learning by members of the AEC, and the members' abilities to distinguish between the need for adaptive learning or innovation. This research addresses learning by individuals and groups, and the strategies employed through an empirical study (survey). A conceptual model for organizational learning contributions by individuals and groups is presented and tested for confirmation of exploitive or explorative learning strategies for individuals, and directions composed of depth and breadth of learning. Strategies for groups are tested for internal or external search orientations and directions toward the single or multi-discipline unit. The survey is analyzed by method of principal components extraction and further interpreted to reveal factors that are correlated by Pearson product moment coefficients and tested for significance for potential relationships to factors for outcomes. Correlation across dependent variables prevented interpretation of the most significant factors for group learning strategies. However, results provide possible support for direction in supporting processes that promote networking among individuals and group structures that recognize the dual nature of knowledge - that required for technical competency and that required for success in the organization. Recommendations for practitioners include adjustments to knowledge acquisition direction, promoting external collaboration among firms, and provision of dual succession pathways through technical expertise or organizational processes for senior staff.

There is a growing body of literature on no-fee public schools in South Africa. The vision of this policy is to ensure that all citizens have equal access to quality basic education. This study, conducted an assessment of the funding-management strategies in three no-fees public primary schools within the Western Cape Education Department. This is vital as post-1996 the African National Congress embarked on the transformation of education in the country to ensure that all citizens have unfettered access to quality education as stipulated in the 1996 Constitution Section 29 (1) (a) which expresses that everyone has the right to basic education. This is also supported by the White Paper on Education, the School Act of 1996 and the policy document on School Fee Exemption and no-fee of Schools of 2007. As a follow-up to the no-fee policy, there was the creation of no- fees schools in Cape Town.

Abstract:

Abstract: The objective of the current research is the development of a new conceptual model aiming to represent, in an integrated manner, the many situations of conflict of interests as a basis for analysis and design of hierarchical multiagent systems control and for the improvement of the methodology for betterment of the managers¿ skills to deal with the strategic management of such conflicts. The investigation method used was a comparative analysis of the unique characteristics of classical games from Game Theory ¿ Nash, Stackelberg, Pareto, and Minimax ¿ searching, among them, their commonalities and differentiations. This investigation identified two distinct dimensions that enabled the conception and construction of a matrix to represent, in a integrated form, those four games mentioned above. The resulting conceptual model provides a comprehensive analytical scheme, inspired in the theory of games, and is used to explain, describe, interpret and forecast behaviors of autonomous agents involved in situations of conflict of interests and, in some cases, to prescribe the more adequate decisions. The Strategic Games Matrix (SGM) proposed and used in this study establishes a conceptual reference framework mapping six different types of games. In it, the assumptions for classic game models, among others for limitcases, are used in an integrated and complementary manner. The SGM deals with both competitive and cooperative games, as well as balanced and unbalanced ones, taking into consideration both the players' competitive postures and the powerratio assumed by each one. The SGM contemplates in an innovative way the treatment of multiple simultaneous strategic sub-games among the agents involved. The application of the SGM concepts to complex systems ¿ hierarchical or not ¿, with multiple autonomous intelligent interactive agents, provides a methodology of utility for analysis and design of their control strategies. An important part of this study is the exploratory experiments with pedagogical purpose. Such business games, played in a computer, indicate that the participants increase their perception to understand the various games to play, and their ability to act at each one of them. This use of the SGM leads each participant to analyze conflict of interests¿ situations and to improve its strategic decisions: Through an interactive dynamic process of trial and error he/she ends up learning how to make better decisions taking into consideration the likely decisions of the other agents involved as well as her/his evaluation of the consequences of their choices. Keywords: Strategic Games Matrix; game theory; strategic games; business games; multi-agent control; conflict management; strategic planning; strategic management; business simulation; managers training; hierarchical games

Schneider, Ariane Hinça. "Inteligência coopetitiva setorial: uma proposta de modelo." Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná, 2015. http://repositorio.utfpr.edu.br/jspui/handle/1/1588.

Abstract:
The business environment context points at the necessity of new forms of management for the sustainable competitiveness of organizations through time. Coopetition is characterized as an alternative in the interaction of different actors, which compete and cooperate simultaneously, in the pursuit of common goals. This dual relation, within a gain-increasing perspective, converts competitors into partners and fosters competitiveness, especially that of organizations within a specific sector. The field of competitive intelligence has, in its turn, assisted organizations, individually, in the systematization of information valuable to decision-making processes, which benefits competitiveness. It follows that it is possible to combine coopetition and competitive intelligence in a systematized process of sectorial intelligence for coopetitive relations. The general aim of this study is, therefore, to put forth a model of sectorial coopetitive intelligence. The methodological outlining of the study is characterized as a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative methods), of an applied nature, of exploratory and descriptive aims. The Coordination of the Strategic Roadmapping Project for the Future of Paraná's Industry is the selected object of investigation. Protocols have been designed to collect primary and secondary data. In the collection of the primary ata, online questionary were sent to the sectors selected for examination. A total of 149 answers to the online questionary were obtained, and interviews were performed with all embers of the technical team of the Coordination, in a total of five interviewees. After the collection, all the data were tabulated, analyzed and validated by means of focal groups with the same five members of the Coordination technical team, and interviews were performed with a representative of each of the four sectors selected, in a total of nine participants in the validation. The results allowed the systematization of a sectorial coopetitive intelligence model called ICoops. This model is characterized by five stages, namely, planning, collection, nalysis, project development, dissemination and evaluation. Each stage is detailed in inputs, activities and outputs. The results suggest that sectorial coopetition is motivated mainly by knowledge sharing, technological development, investment in R&D, innovation, chain integration and resource complementation. The importance of a neutral institution has been recognized as a facilitator and incentive to the approximation of organizations. Among the main difficulties are the financing of the projects, the adhesion of new members, the lack of tools for the analysis of information and the dissemination of the actions.

Abstract:
Since its establishment as an emerging area of research in strategic management over a decade ago, business model research has had little consensus towards adopting a single definition or common language for this rapidly growing management concept.  However, strong agreement as to the relevance of value creation within organizations underlies existing business model literature. Moreover, applications of business model frameworks outside the private sector have been limited. Recent literature has identified business model innovation and design as a critical tool in effective implementation of organizational strategy, and empirical research in business models from new and alternative perspectives may reveal linkages between strategic management issues and effectiveness in creating value in public and citizen sector organizations.  Nevertheless, existing academic literature has not yet explored applications of traditional business model frameworks within a public sector context, nor has the need for empirical research linking the business model concept with public sector management been addressed. The main purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of how business models can be defined, redefined, and applied in city economic development agencies for application as a strategic public management tool. An analysis of how the business model of a prominent city economic development agency has been employed and how value is created within this model will be undertaken.  This empirical study also aims to determine conceptual linkages between business model applications in city economic development and to contribute a theoretical foundation towards development of future research.   Given the multi-faceted applications of the business model concept, the authors have conducted exploratory research targeting the application of current business model concepts and frameworks to a city economic development agency representing an influential global center of finance and commerce, the City of New York. The significance of conducting empirical studies on city economic development agencies is due to the influence in which these organizations have on industrial cluster growth, national economic competitiveness, and citywide and regional transformation. In considering this context, The New York City Economic Development Corporation is the primary economic growth engine for the City of New York, and strives to create and deliver value to citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders of New York City.   Findings from this study suggest that economic development professionals have not adequately clarified the term ‘business model’ for promoting common language between strategists, project managers, consultants, and executives to support strategic business model design within city economic development agencies.  The authors conclude that equally relevant to framing and applying theoretical foundations grounded in the business model concept, is the identification of value-creating activities within economic development agencies and development of citizen-focused value propositions.  This empirical study aims to define, clarify and explore the former, while calling upon a need for future research of the latter.

The need for an organized protection  and management of protected natural areas  emerged in the late XIX century. it coincides with the establishment of the first national park in the world, Yellowstone, USA. Areas of Durmitor, Lovcen and Biogradska Gora were formally declared national parks in 1952.Skadar Lake became protected area in1983, while the youngest national park Prokletije was declared in 2009. The youngest protected area in Montenegro is the Regional Park Piva. The fact that according to theConstitution Montenegro was declared the world's first ecological state, obliges all parties at local, regional and state level to actively engage in a process of organized management and protection of natural areas, as well as to work on improvementand sustainable usage of their resources. Primary function in all those processes  should be the protection of natural elements, species and habitats.
