Abstract:
What is environmental virtue? Is developing good habits enough? Would a limit on per capita emissions be fair? Is rewilding just another form of the human domination of nature? Exploring these questions and more, this book provides an up-to-date and balanced introduction to the field. It first examines ethical theory, then ties theory into practice, showing how ethics guide environmental policies, but also how actions shape environmental values. Updated and expanded to engage with the latest scholarship, scientific discoveries, and societal challenges, this 2nd edition features: • New sections on food ethics, climate change denial, climate activism, and the Anthropocene • Contemporary case studies including lab-grown meat, Extinction Rebellion, and European rewilding • Expanded coverage of non-Western ethics, including Indigenous ethical perspectives and African relational ethics • Updated discussion questions, further reading sections, and online resources Exploring the possibilities and limitations inherent in both classical ethical models and modern theoretical approaches to the environment, this is a key resource for teaching students to think ethically about the world we live in.

Abstract:
The goal to make agriculture sustainable expresses an ideal to ensure that our present practices should not impose future disadvantages. “Sustainable agriculture” sometimes refers to agricultural practices that are believed to be “natural,” which do not employ modern technologies. Alternately, the term is sometimes used to refer to agricultural practices that avoid depleting resources or which can be expected to leave future generations as well off as the present generation or which will avoid diminishing future opportunities or the ability of later generations to satisfy their needs. This chapter considers several alternative conceptions of “sustainability” and different ways to understand and articulate the concept of “sustainable agriculture.” Then it considers several specific agricultural practices, evaluating what it would mean for them to be sustainable.

Mitcham, Carl, and Nan Wang. Interdisciplinarity in Ethics. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.20.

Full text
Abstract:
“Interdisciplinarity in Ethics” begins with a schematic overview of how ethics in the West has bridged (1) individuals and social orders through virtue ethics (Greece), (2) reason and revelation through deontology (medieval period), and (3) science and politics in consequentialist utilitarianism (modern period). In counterpoint, it observes how China adds to virtue ethical interdisciplinarity efforts (4) to harmonize humans with the cosmos and (5) to integrate the human inner and outer selves. From this dual historicophilosophical perspective, the chapter then examines how recent ethical challenges from science and technology have pushed interdisciplinarity into ethics in (6) a more literal sense: critically reflecting on the ways human actions are being transformed by science and technology in bioethics, nuclear ethics, environmental ethics, information ethics, and the professional ethics of scientists and engineers. It concludes by arguing for increased interdisciplinarity in ethics in the form of more internal synergies between science and ethics.

Abstract:
This book traces the evolution of environmental principles from their origins as vague political slogans reflecting fears about environmental hazards to their embodiment in enforceable laws. Since the early 1970s environmental issues have taken on an ever increasing profile. This has been due in part to a fundamental change in the type and scale of risk posed by industry. Issues such as global warming, GM food, and BSE typify the new kinds of risk: potentially catastrophic consequences could ensue yet there is no scientific agreement over their precise causation, duration, and other concerns. Environmental law has always responded to risks posed by industrial society but the new generation of risks have required a new set of environmental principles, emerging from a combination of public fears, science, ethics, and established legal practice. This book shows how three of the most important principles of modern environmental law grew out of this new age of ecological risk: the polluter-pays principle, the preventive principle, and the precautionary principle. The author examines the legal force of these principles and in the process offers a novel theory of norm formation in environmental law by unearthing new grounds of legality, comparing environmental laws across Europe, the Unites States, and Australia. The book will be of interest to all with an interest in environmental law and policy, in the relationship between law and science, and in the ways in which political and ethical values can become embodied in laws.

Essen, Juliana. Buddhist Ethics in South and Southeast Asia. Edited by Daniel Cozort and James Mark Shields. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198746140.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
The anthropological literature dealing with Buddhist ethics in the Theravāda countries of South and Southeast Asia may be divided into five categories, whereby ethics is defined as guidelines for right action oriented toward a particular goal: (1) ethics of statehood or political ethics; (2) ethics of salvation or monastic ethics; (3) ethics of engagement, including both social and environmental ethics; (4) karmic ethics for the laity; and (5) ethics of worldly benefit, as emphasized by some modern urban Buddhist movements. These categories highlight debates that have historically occupied anthropological scholarship, countering claims that Buddhism is an apolitical, purely individualistic or asocial, world-renouncing religion that is divisible into ‘big’ and ‘little’ traditions. This review, covering both theory and rich ethnographic evidence from Thailand, demonstrates the plurality and complexity of ethical Buddhist practice in the region.
