Abstract:
Researchers who study clinical and developmental psychology are often interested in answering questions such as how interventions work, when treatment begins to improve health outcomes, or for whom treatment has the greatest impact. Answers to these and similar questions impact the general understanding of health and behavior, and can be imperative for effectively implementing intervention and prevention programs. To evaluate such complex relationships among variables, researchers have turned to moderated mediation analysis. Moderated mediation analysis is a statistical tool used to identify the conditional processes among observed or latent variables. However, in developmental and clinical psychology, variables are regularly measured using multiple sources or multiple methods. In fact, best practice recommendations in clinical psychology suggest measuring variables with multiple methods (Achenbach, 2006). The question arises how to use multimethod assessments in statistical analyses such as moderated mediation analysis. The objectives of the present study were to create a multimethod moderated mediation model, apply the model to an extant dataset of child developmental behaviors, and evaluate conditions under which the model performed well using a Monte Carlo simulation study. Results from the application showed that the indirect path from hyperactivity to academic impairment through oppositional defiant behavior was significant but not moderated by inattention. Results from the simulation study indicated that excluding true method effects from a moderated mediation model resulted in unacceptable parameter and standard error bias. These results point to the advantages of using the M4 model to evaluate moderated mediation in the presence of multimethod data.

Procento, Philip Matthew. "An Experimental Investigation and Conditional Process Analysis of the Role of Catastrophizing in the Pain — Working Memory Nexus." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/21463.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
There is a well-documented bidirectional relationship between pain and cognitive dysfunction, especially working memory. Despite this extensive body of research, the pain–working memory relationship is poorly understood. Pain catastrophizing – exaggerated negative cognitive and emotional responses towards pain – may contribute to working memory deficits by occupying finite, shared cognitive resources, but this has yet to be investigated. The present study sought to clarify the role of pain catastrophizing (assessed as both a trait-level disposition and state-level process) in working memory dysfunction. Healthy undergraduate participants were randomized to an ischemic pain or control task, during which they completed verbal and non-verbal working memory tests. They also completed measures of state- and trait-level pain catastrophizing. Mediation analyses indicated that state-level pain catastrophizing mediated the relationships of pain group to both verbal and non-verbal working memory, such that participants in the pain group (vs. the control group) catastrophized more about their pain, which then resulted in worse verbal and non-verbal working memory performance. In moderated mediation analyses, trait-level pain catastrophizing moderated this mediation effect for both verbal and non-verbal working memory. Those participants in the pain group who reported greater tendency to catastrophize about pain in general exhibited greater catastrophizing in-the-moment during the pain task, thereby leading to worse verbal and non-verbal working memory performance. These results provide evidence for pain catastrophizing as a putative mechanism and moderating factor of working memory dysfunction in pain. Future research should replicate these results in chronic pain samples, investigate other potential mechanisms (e.g., sleep), and develop interventions to ameliorate cognitive dysfunction by targeting pain catastrophizing.

Shame has been associated with psychopathology, in both heterosexual and non-heterosexual individuals. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the associations and processes behind the potential influence of emotion regulation processes in the association between shame and psychopathology. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the mediating role of shame-coping styles in the association between (internal and external) shame and psychopathology, and whether this mediation was moderated by sexual orientation. The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 346 Portuguese adults from the community (M age = 26.3 years), of which 231 reported to be heterosexual and 115 to be non-heterosexual. Results showed that non-heterosexual individuals reported higher levels of (internal and external) shame and psychopathology, as well as a greater use of self-directed shame-coping styles (withdrawal, attack-self, and avoidance). No differences between groups in other-directed shame-coping style (attack-others) were found. In both groups, the associations between shame, shame-coping styles and psychopathology showed that shame was positively associated with psychopathology, and that withdrawal and attack-self showed the stronger associations with psychopathology. The shame-coping style withdrawal had the most consistent mediating effect in the association between shame and psychopathology. Sexual orientation was not a significant moderator of the hypothesized mediations. This study provides novel findings on the potential role of shame-coping styles in the association between shame and psychopathology. Therefore, this process may be an important target to address in clinical practice, regardless of sexual orientation.

"Egalitarian Socialization and Subjective Well-Being in Multiracial Individuals: A Moderated Mediation Analysis." Doctoral diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.38652.

Abstract:
abstract: Scholarly interest in racial socialization is growing, but researchers' understanding of how and when racial socialization relates to subjective well-being is underdeveloped, particularly for multiracial populations. The present study investigated the possibility that the relationship of racial socialization to subjective well-being is mediated by racial identification and that this mediation depends on physical racial ambiguity. Specifically, the proposed study used a moderated mediation model to examine whether the indirect relation of egalitarian socialization to subjective well-being through racial identification is conditional on physical racial ambiguity among 313 multiracial individuals. Results suggested egalitarian socialization was positively correlated with subjective well-being. The results provided no support for the moderated mediation hypothesis. The present study examined the complex interaction between racial socialization, racial identification, physical racial ambiguity, and subjective well-being among multiracial individuals. Despite receiving no support for the moderated mediation hypothesis, this research helped to further explicate a distinct pathway through which egalitarian socialization impacts well-being through racial identification for multiracial individuals independent of physical racial ambiguity.

Abstract:
Moderation and mediation analyses are widespread in psychological research. Moderation occurs when the direction and/or strength of the relation between an independent variable and a dependent variable depends on the level of a moderating variable. Mediation, on the other hand, occurs when the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable is transmitted through a mediating variable (Baron & Kenny, 1986). Psychologists often move beyond these two processes and ask more complex questions such as how a moderating effect takes place or when a mediating process varies in different contexts. The former question has been referred as mediated moderation while the latter one has been referred as moderated mediation. Despite the fact that there are many discussions about the analysis of mediated moderation and moderated mediation in the literature, the confusion over the interpretation of these two processes persists. In addition, the SEM method, which is known to be more flexible than traditional egression method for the analysis of mediated moderation and moderated mediation is rarely discussed in the literature. In response to these issues, the main objective of the present study was to examine the methods for the analysis of mediated moderation and moderated mediation in the SEM framework. The first part of this study resolved the confusion over the current interpretation of the mediated moderation and moderated mediation by demonstrating these two processes using five typical conceptual models of mediatedmoderation and moderated mediation. In the second part, a new unified method was proposed to provide some general rules for translating the conceptual models of mediated moderation and moderated mediation into the SEM working models. The empirical performance of SEM analysis against regression analysis was assessed by a simulation study. Results showed the two methods performed similarly across different model conditions. In the last part, the unconstrained indicant product approach (Marsh, et al., 2004) for latent moderation analysis was introduced and combined with the unified approach for the analysis of latent variable mediated moderation and moderated mediation models. Simulation findings suggested that this method performed satisfactorily for testing mediated moderating and moderated mediating effects in most simulation conditions. However, chi-square statistics for the evaluation of model fit should be used with cautious as simulation results indicated that they were not accurate in most cases.

This study, we following the conservation of resources (COR) theory, to examined the mediating role of emotional exhaustion in the relationship between perception of stigma from supervisor (PSS) and work engagement, turnover intention respectively, as well as the moderating roles of colleagues support on that relationship and on the mediation effect of emotional exhaustion, and the moderated mediation model that demonstrates how colleagues support can effected the mediating effect of employees’ emotional exhaustion. Survey data were collected from a sample of 235 at least one year full-time employees graduated from private university in Taiwan over second time periods. The results showed that emotional exhaustion fully mediated the relationship between PSS and work engagement, turnover intention respectively. Moreover, the results from the moderation analysis showed that colleagues support moderated the influence of PSS on emotional exhaustion and the results from the moderated mediation analysis revealed that this mediation of emotional exhaustion was moderated by colleagues support such that at the lower level of colleagues support, the mediation effect of emotional exhaustion became higher. Implications for managerial practices and suggestions for future research were discussed.

Previous studies have mainly focused on the relationship between participants’ demographic information and attitudes toward homosexuals, in which treat the homosexuals as a homogeneity group and less focus on the concrete exclusive behavior on homosexuals. Using the group member selection paradigm, the current study investigated the relationship between social dominance orientation (SDO) and exclusion of different homosexual subgroups, and distinguish the direct and indirect exclusions. 201 heterosexual participants were recruited. After deleting discussion of same-sex marriage scenario, there were no difference between direct exclusion of homosexuals and heterosexuals, but indirect exclusion of homosexuals were stronger. The results showed that SDO was positive correlated with direct and indirect exclusion of old gay, old lesbian and young gay; however, there was no correlation between SDO and exclusion of young lesbian. Attitude toward homosexuals mediated the relationship between SDO and exclusion when the target were gay men; on the other hand, dehumanization mediated the relationship when the target were old homosexuals except direct exclusion of old lesbian. The findings showed that the SDO can predict exclusion of homosexuals, and the mediators of the relationship between SDO and exclusion of homosexuals were influenced by the homosexuals’ gender and age. Implications and limitations are discussed.

Collins, Erynn. "The Relationship Between Behaving Fairly, Belief in a Just World and Self-Perception: A Moderated Mediation Analysis." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/128742.

Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
Fairness is fundamentally important to human beings, so much so that behaving fairly can have psychological benefits. Past research has shown that behaving fairly can positively influence self-esteem, and this is especially true when one believes that the world is a just place (i.e. belief in a just world). The aim of this study was to further explore the relationships between fairness, belief in a just world (BJW) and self-perception (self-esteem and self-efficacy), as well as to propose explanatory mediating variables. Using a moderated mediation analysis, this study tested whether perceived control or intrapersonal consistency mediate the relationship between fairness and self-perception, and whether BJW moderates this relationship. Participants (N = 198) completed an online survey. Results indicated a positive relationship between fairness and self-perception, which was significantly mediated by perceived control, but suppressed by intrapersonal consistency. Contrary to expectations, BJW-other was a significant moderator, while BJW-self was not. Overall, results suggest that the more fairly a person behaves, the more positive their self-perception, and this is because behaving fairly encourages a person to feel in control – a relationship which is especially true when a person believes that the world is a just place for other people.

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of individual employees’ P-O fit on their organization identification and turnover intention by applying a theory framework of multi-level. Furthermore, we aggregated the individual level to the country level and analyze whether different countries or other economic factor, such as unemployment rate, could moderate the relationship described above. Data were collected from 31 countries involving 18,592 employees who provided the information about perceived and actual work values, organizational identification, turnover intention, and 5 demographic variables in the sampling questionnaire. Hierarchical linear modeling technique was utilized to test cross-level moderated mediation model. Starting from the Null model ANOVA, the present study gradually included the control and predictive variables to the final full model, and examined the mediation effect by applying bootstrapping method and run the reliability and validity tests during the process of research analysis. The analysis results of this study show that P-O fit has a negative impact on turnover intention and organizational identification partially mediates the relationship between P-O fit and turnover intention. In addition, 3 moderated effects are also found in the structure paths of our research model. Finally, the present study raised several issues and attempts to find the answers based on the empirical analysis results. Implications for practice, the limitations of the study and directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:
In the current world, where most of the work inside organizations is completed through teamwork, team effectiveness becomes an important indicator of organizational performance, in which leadership behavior has a strong influence. The present study aims to analyse the combined effect of leadership sensegiving and the promotion of team sensemaking on the relationship between intragroup conflicts (relational and task) and team effectiveness. In the existing literature there are several studies on the types of conflicts and their positive and negative impacts on team effectiveness, as well as leadership sensegiving and the promotion of sensemaking. However, there are not yet many studies analyzing these specific leadership behaviors in conflict situations as predictors of team effectiveness. A moderated mediation model is proposed to analyze the combined effects of leadership sensegiving and the promotion of team sensemaking on intragroup conflicts (relationship and task) as predictors of team effectiveness. When conducting the study in 55 teams, however, the results found did not support the proposed model. Nevertheless, the results did show a significant effect of the leadership promotion of sensemaking as a simple moderator in the relationship between leader sensegiving and relationship conflicts. More specifically, when there is a high level of leadership promotion of sensemaking and low level of leadership sensegiving, relationship conflict is negatively affected, decreasing its occurrence.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relation among maternal psychological control, perceived parental differential treatment, effortful control, and relational aggressive behavior against siblings. There were 425 elementary students in the 4th ~6th grades from northern and central Taiwan who participated in the study. The measured variables were measured by the children’s self-report questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA, one-way MANOVA, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were adopted to analyze the data. The results were as follows: 1. There were significant differences in the justification of perceived parental differential treatment and relational aggressive behavior across eight sibling groups with the composition of sex and birth-order. However, there were no significant differences in the dimension and degree of perceived parental differential treatment across the eight sibling groups. 2. Justification of perceived parental differential treatment significantly mediated the relationship between maternal psychological control and relational aggressive behavior. 3. The level of effortful control moderated the proposed mediated relationship. Among children with low effortful control, justification of perceived parental differential treatment mediated the relationship between maternal psychological control and relational aggressive behavior against siblings. However, among children with high effortful control, justification of perceived parental differential treatment was unable to mediate the relationship between maternal psychological control and relational aggressive behavior against siblings. This study suggests that children’s ability to justify parental differential treatment may have a greater impact on their relational aggressive behavior relative to the degree and dimension of perceived parental differential treatment. Furthermore, the proposed mediated relationship varies across children with different levels of effortful control. The findings of this study may serve as a reference for parents and researchers.

There are significant positive predictive capabilities between supervision abusive and workplace deviant behavior. However it’s a warning for organizational development. Since Tepper’s (2000) pioneering work on abusive supervision, this topic has become prevalent and comprehensive in the research domain of positive and negative leader behavior. It’s very difficult to predict the impact of workplace organization from workplace deviant behavior. Because it may cause economic losses, harm the individual’s psychological, and affects the function of family and society development. So it is worth to exploring preventing it. In the light of issues, the current study tries to explore examine the effect of abusive supervision on subordinates' workplace deviant behavior, and analysis the moderated mediation path of perceived organizational justice and Chinese loyalty to supervisor. We hope to use effective scale which with Chinese loyalty, and explanation the different culture. The purposes of this study are 1.How the Supervision abusive woek on workplace deviant behavior; 2.The moderated mediation path analysis of perceived organizational justice and Chinese loyalty to supervisor. Then, a revised formal research was delivered to 60 pairs’ questionnaire data. The 43 pairs’ valid collected questionnaires were analyzed. Research questions and hypotheses were tested on correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, a confirmatory factor analysis and a structural equation modeling. After hypotheses testing, we figured out:1. Abusive supervision was positive related to subordinates' workplace deviant behavior, and the subordinates' perception of organizational justice couldn’t be a mediator. 2. The Level of Chinese loyalty to supervisor couldn’t be a moderated mediator.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Most children exposed to interpersonal violence experience multiple forms of victimizations that are more predictive of trauma symptomatology than single traumatic incidents. This exploratory study seeks to extend research that suggests a child’s intrinsic strengths may help mitigate the development of serious psychiatric symptoms for children experiencing multiple interfamilial victimizations. Utilizing a diverse clinical sample (N= 106) of children 7 to 18 years of age who were exposed to multiple family traumas or to non-interpersonal traumas, path analysis models (moderation, mediational, and moderated mediational) were employed across potential explanatory or attenuating demographic factors (age, ethnicity, and gender) to ascertain the associations between multiple interpersonal maltreatment types experienced, childs’ behavioral and emotional strengths, and their posttraumatic stress symptomatology and/or behavioral and emotional difficulty symptoms.

This study aims to JD-R model (Job Demand-Resource, JD-R) discusses the competitive climate for workplace bullying, turnover intention and deviant behaviors relevance;Secondly, to explore the relationship between perceived supervisor support for workplace bullying, turnover intention and deviant behavior moderating effect; Finally, perceived supervisor support for the regulation of the relationship between these intermediary intermediary effect is the focus of this study. The study sample with subordinates in charge of the police station for the study of duality (each corresponding to a competent subordinates) study used questionnaires to obtain effective total of 203 paired samples. The results indicate that competitive climate on turnover intention and deviant behavior has a significant positive effect on competition between colleagues bullying climate and turnover intention and deviant behavior fully mediated.Perceived supervisor support for colleagues in the workplace bullying and deviant behavior has the effect of weakening the regulation, finally, domestic 1111 Job Bank survey in 2013 showed that the workplace trained language, rude behavior or physical behavior, such as the proportion of employees up to 54%, while 71% of employees have chosen to "forbear" its approach, to explore beyond the academic gap. This study aims to understand the business a competitive addition to bringing innovation and performance beyond, whether to have a negative impact, and whether the corresponding solution is one worth considering.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore whether psychological well-being and subjective well-being were the mediator or moderator in the causal model of physical activity and academic performance. The participants were 507 senior high school students (292 males and 215 females) sampled by cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this study included The Seven-Day Physical Activity Scale, The Senior High School Students’ Psychological Well-Being Scale, The Subjective Well-Being Scale, and the participants’ academic performance. The model was analyzed by structural equation modeling (SEM). Results of this study indicated that psychological well-being and subjective well-being were not the mediator or moderator of the causal model. By follwing the results, recommendations for future research and applications for education were suggested. keywords: mediating model, moderating model, physical activity, academic performance, psychological well-being, subjective well-being
