Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

They range from Seneca's philosophical paradigm of the sapiens to the military vir fortis and the prototype of the certus amicus. Oxymoronic stans periit specifically characterizes the poor man's son's aloofness from the ill-fame attached to gladiators. It also marks his death in battle: scorning the exit offered by the gladiatorial lex pugnandi, he chooses the law for bellica certamina, which offers the only opportunity to display virtus.

Abstract:
Retail business models, both with respect to overall retail operations, as well as individual types of retail organisations, are undergoing transformation brought on by the current economic environment. This can be attributed to growing competition, changes to customer behaviour and expectations, globalisation, as well as the availability and development of new information technologies. This paper outlines the essence and fundamental components of retail business models, indicates the probable directions in which those models may evolve and identifies the determining factors and trends that shape the business models applied by retailers. In her analysis the author has demonstrated that although the retail sector eagerly embraces innovation, any changes to business models are evolutionary in their nature. They mainly involve the introduction of new solutions in terms of store formats, cooperation within the distribution channels, changes to the range of products and services offered and the use of mobile technologies.

Abstract:
2006/2007

Abstract:
Over the last 20 years, electricity markets around the world have gradually been deregulated, creating wholesale markets in which generating companies compete for the right to supply electricity, through an offering system. This thesis considers the optimisation of the offering process from the perspective of an individual generator, subject to intertemporal constraints including fuel limitations, correlated rest-of-market behaviour patterns and unit operational decisions. Contributions from the thesis include a Pre-Processing scheme that results in considerable computational benefits for a two-level Dynamic Programming method, in addition to the development of a new process that combines the techniques of Decision Analysis and Dynamic Programming.

Abstract:
The starting point of this thesis is the remark that recent decades have been characterized by a rising complexity in the economic and political context both at the national and international level. This is due both to the European economic and monetary integration process and to the regional decentralisation process. With the aim of providing a useful tool of analysis for the decision-maker,. a 'global' regional model for the Italian labour market has been constructed on the basis of annual data from ISTAT-SVIMEZ over the 1970-2003 period. This model could be viewed as an extension to a multi-regional framework of the previous one-region model developed by Baussola (2003). The model shows good performance not only in representing regional labour market specificities, but also in reproducing national variable values. It is also robust and effective in a time-series context.

Janawade, Vikrant. Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014AIXM2010.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the services offered by networked firms and the way in which they are perceived by the customers. Nowadays customers are facing more and more often complex service situations which drastically differ from the simple situations traditionally analysed by service marketing and management studies (a single service delivered by a well identified single firm deliberately chosen by the consumer). Service firms now propose more and more complex and enriched offerings (service "flowers", "bunches" or "constellations") grouping several providers, but among them some are hardly identifiable by the customer. Consumers' decision is made simpler but a part of their liberty of choice has been lost. Little is known about the consequences this can have on their future behaviour. The main hypothesis is that after experiencing a service delivered by networked firms, the consumers synthesize all their perceptions in terms of the perceived value of the network; furthermore, this assessment will largely determine their behavioural intentions. A quantitative survey shows that such a hypothesis can be accepted. This survey was conducted in the field of airline industry, aiming at multi-lateral airline alliances. This context is particularly appropriate to our subject because during such a travel, services are delivered to passengers by independent airline companies as well as by the common organisation in charge of the co-ordination and co-operation. The structural equations model tested using the PLS-SEM method also identifies the determinants of perceived value of an alliance in the specific context of long haul flights and their respective weights and contributions

This study aimed to verify whether it is possible to estimate an econometric model to predict the behavior of issuers of new shares of Fundos de Investimentos em Participações (FIPs) based on some explanatory variables for the most part, based on macroeconomic variables in the model estimated in the study of Iaquipaza (2005). We analyzed a series of 75 observations, on the number of FIPs’ offers made each month, from October 2003 to December 2009. To analyze the time series of FIPs’ offers, was used a model of Poisson regression, to work with the count data that made up the dependent variable sample. The results showed the influence of some variables listed in study Iaquipaza (2005) and others that were included in the model due to the specific type of asset analyzed. However, the study is limited by the fact that it was studied an industry still in its beginning, which culminated in the estimation of a model with few observations.

Abstract:
Cordeiro [2002a] presented a new multiple state model which enables us to analyse Income Protection (IP) claims by cause of disability. This model, which is a generalization of the multiple state model presented by the Continuous Mortality Investigation Bureau in its 12th report, in 1991 (CMIR 12(1991]), is a very useful tool in the underwriting and claim control stages of IP business. In chapters 1 and 2 of this thesis we study in detail the model proposed in CMIR 12(1991] and the more general model proposed in Cordeiro [2002a], respectively. For each of these models we present: the mathematical basis of the model, formulae for the basic probabilities which can be defined with the model, the numerical algorithms which enable us to evaluate efficiently some of the basic probabilities and the graduations of the transition intensities of the model. In chapter 3 we use the more general model to calculate net premiums both for IP policies which offer total protection and for policies which offer partial protection (i.e. which cover only some classes of causes of disability. For that purpose, we use the numerical algorithms which allow us to calculate the basic probabilities efficiently and the graduations of the transition intensities presented in chapter 2. In chapter 3 we also analyse the results obtained.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we examine the association between forgiveness and flourishing. We begin by identifying what forgiveness and flourishing are. We then move to considering conceptual models as well as evidence supporting the connection between forgiveness and flourishing. An early model of the forgiveness and mental health relationship offers a beginning in this regard. Next, we examine the stress-and-coping models of forgiveness of oneself and others. The final model is the scaffolding self and social systems model of forgiveness and subjective well-being. These models offer multiple vantage points from which to consider the forgiveness-flourishing connection. Limitations to these models and to the current state of knowledge on forgiveness and flourishing are highlighted, especially the limits to comprehensive assessment of flourishing in the extant literature. Conclusions and future directions for studying and promoting flourishing in people of different religious affiliation, cultures, countries, and life-circumstances are discussed in closing.

Abstract:
AbstractAdvanced systems engineering (ASE) is a new paradigm for agile, efficient, evolutionary, and quality-aware development of complex cyber-physical systems using modern digital technologies and tools. ASE is essentially enabled by smart digital modeling tools for specifying, modeling, testing, simulating, and analyzing the system under development embedded in a coherent and consistent methodology. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) projects SPES2020, SPES_XT, and CrESt offer such a methodology and framework for model-based systems engineering (MBSE). The framework provides a comprehensive methodology for MBSE that is independent of tools and modeling languages. The framework also offers a comprehensive set of concrete modeling techniques and activities that build on a formal, mathematical foundation. The SPES framework is based on four principles that are of paramount importance: (1) Functional as well as non-functional requirements fully modeled and understood at system level. (2) Consistent consideration of interfaces at each system level. (3) Decomposition of systems into subsystems and their interfaces. (4) Models for a variety of cross-sectional topics (e.g., variability, safety, dynamics).

AbstractStructural runtime models provide a snapshot of the constituents of a system and their state. Capturing the history of runtime models, i.e., previous snapshots, has been shown to be useful for a number of aims. Handling, however, history at runtime poses important challenges to tool support. We present the InTempo tool which is based on the Eclipse Modeling Framework and encodes runtime models as graphs. Key features of InTempo, such as, the integration of temporal requirements into graph queries, the in-memory storage of the model, and a systematic method to contain the model’s memory consumption, intend to address issues which seemingly place limitations on the available tool support. InTempo offers two operation modes which support both runtime and postmortem application scenarios.

AbstractEvery day more midwives and other healthcare practitioners (HCPs) realise that good care has to consider their clients’ sexual well-being. Still, many find it challenging to breach the topic during a consultation by talking to their clients about sexuality. This chapter explores the thresholds midwives and other healthcare practitioners experience when it comes down to talking about sex with their clients. Drawing on existing models of health and well-being, such as the biopsychosocial model of health, and existing models for communication in clinical settings, such as the ICE model, the chapter offers a simple and easy to use four-step communication model—starting with raising the issue of sexuality pro-actively and ending by making the client an offer. This approach can help healthcare practitioners to integrate sexuality into their daily practice.“Talking sexuality” is a part of the more extensive publication “Sexuality & Midwifery”, an open access textbook published by Springer Nature, geared at midwives and related healthcare professionals, providing an overview of the current scientific knowledge on sexuality and midwifery, presented in a practice-oriented way.

Abstract:
The practitioners of activities such as bouldering or mountain climbing sometimes find themselves in the situation of needing textile equipment that offer protection without limiting the body mobility. Modern design implies a complex process, from concept, to modelling, to prototyping and testing. The paper presents a tutorial which is useful for training of all those involved in designing, modelling and manufacturing knee pads integrated into protective garments, using certain principles regarding ergonomics, impact force management, texture, weight etc. The use of modelling software such as Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper offer also a wide array of tools for creating a virtual model which be later evaluated in virtual strain tests. The next step is creating a physical prototype, in order to test and compare materials, textures and physical parameters. This is where 3D printing technologies come in, compacting the physical modelling and prototyping process and offering designers, manufacturers or students a better control over the whole design and development process. Parameters such as material, infill, shell thickness can greatly influence an object's behaviour under strain tests. The fact that it can be build a minutely accurate scale prototype of a model in a very short time, without having to deal with the logistic or acquisition of expensive precision equipment, is especially relevant in the current context of the pandemic. This offers the possibility to create several prototypes of knee pads, made from plastics of varying degrees of rigidity, with differing infill percentage and layout, which will be further tested in order to assess their fit with the needs of climbers. In this context, 3D printing offers a new perspective in prototyping, providing a compact solution for most of the challenges in developing new functional or protective textile products.

Abstract:
Bayesian networks offer an intuitive method of modelling causal relationships between the triggering events that lead to equipment impact on a pipeline. This method offers an advantage over the more well-known fault-tree methods due to its ability to use Bayesian inference for updating the prior probabilities of triggering events that lead to equipment impact such as, failure of permanent markers, use of one-call system, or failure of right-of-way patrol. In this paper, a modelling approach for a Bayesian network for equipment impact assessment, based on the available fault-tree method, is demonstrated. The advantages of the Bayesian network, such as updating the occurrence rates of basic triggering events and tracking information flow based on partial and incomplete information are illustrated by using the event data available from the damage incident reporting tool (DIRT) of Common Ground Alliance (CGA).

Abstract:
Abstract One of the major challenges the oil and gas industry faces is the enablement of fast and seamless multi-disciplinary integration across the reservoir, production, network and facilities. Integrated Asset Management (IAM) is a key concept for making critical decisions about assets development and to maximise asset value. Although the IAM concept has been used in the past, it's tough to implement due to its inherent complexities. This paper introduces the latest technical innovations and processes that make IAM approach practical and reliable for its implementation. This innovative solution offers flexibility to rapidly adjust the model through "automatic and fast model updates" and provides a fit-for-purpose integrated model. The solution improves the speed and accuracy of decisions, and assists in field development planning workflows, modelling operational challenges and addressing debottlenecking options while considering all the domain constraints and development scenarios. Integrated asset modelling methodology used in this paper, is flexible in capturing domain science at different fidelity levels, incorporating fit for purpose physics, ranging from analytical models to highly complex reservoir simulation models with high-resolution grids that capture geological complexity. Operational logic design and decision cycle implementation for production forecasting are leveraged from an implicitly coupled scheduler, referred to as "Field management". Surface network integration in the integrated asset model is flexible and dependent on the level of fidelity needed – with complete control of all entities inside the surface network model provided by the "Field management" system. Optimisation capabilities provided with the "Field management" system allows for "automatic updates" to entities in the production system to optimise the recovery. "Model updates" pertinent to production data updates is driven by the "rapid model update" technique. Flexible coupling techniques and niche optimisation capabilities offered by the "Field management" scheduler between the different domain models enable optimising the asset's production with implicit operational constraints. The superior performance offered through state-of-the-art solvers, fit for purpose fidelity and parallel scalability offers a practical advantage to this integrated asset management approach. "Rapid model update" workflow allows for seamless and fast integration of production data updates within the integrated asset model, thereby keeping the model in an "evergreen" state, reflective of the subsurface dynamics and operational changes. This paper provides the most practical solution for Integrated asset modelling implementation that provides flexibility to balance between performance and fidelity by leveraging the latest technological advancements and workflows. It is the first solution that offers an optimisation technique capable of "rapid and automatic model updates" and python extensibility to achieve realistic field planning forecasts.

Abstract:
This paper describes some of the outcomes of the development of finite element modelling guidelines for the stress analysis of bolted joints in pressure vessels and piping. The modelling methods originally developed at Rolls-Royce typically used 2D axisymmetric models as this was deemed adequate at the time. However, computing software and hardware improvements have subsequently been made which enable more realistic 3D bolted joint models to be solved where a greater level of geometric detail is required. For example the bolts, nuts and perforated flanges can now be represented more realistically reducing the degree of geometric abstraction that is required. Also, modern finite element codes such as ABAQUS and ANSYS now offer gasket elements which enable the initial compression, in-service performance and unloading of the joint to be modelled more realistically. Additionally, contact techniques can also be used to simulate the axial and radial distribution of thread load in the joint which will affect the stress distribution remote from the threaded region. Consequently, the modelling guidelines have been updated and provide guidance for stress engineers to decide which degree of model complexity is warranted.

The article discusses the issue of intergenerational tension in the collaboration of differently old colleagues. It is a follow-up to the outputs of the research project Intergenerational Management in Support of Digitalization in the Building Industry financed by Technological Agency of the Czech Republic. The author focuses on the problems of intergenerational cooperation and analyze the current situation from the point of view of generations division according to typical generational behavior. The solution is based on a model of intergenerational cooperation based on improving communication between generations and sharing digital competences. When modelling inter-generational collaboration, willingness to cooperate is a key issue. The article focuses on the causes of intergenerational tension, which has its roots in the current social climate and the rejection of authorities. The research project shows the way how to deal with the situation in companies introducing digital data processing and offers a relatively simple solution that aims to improve intergenerational cooperation and digital competence sharing in order to increase the competitiveness of companies. At the same time, it offers the way how to effectively use older employees and offer them job satisfaction.

Abstract:
The overarching goals for the UK in relation to global water security are to; tackle and reverse growing water insecurity and its consequences caused by depletion and degradation of natural water sources; and address poor water management and increasing demand. To do this, the UK has a well-developed water ‘offer’ that together can help reach the goal of global water security. This note details some of that water offer: UK water leadership: The UK developed the concept of modern sanitation and water supply, with an early example being the Victorian Bazalgette London sewer; Ownership and regulation: The UK has four models of ownership: government department in Northern Ireland, GoCo in Scotland, Mutual in Wales, and private companies in England. But the common thread is strong and clear, regulation to deliver the right outcomes for society; Competition and markets: The UK set up the world’s first water retail markets for business customers, delivering savings and environmental benefits. Similar market mechanisms are being developed for sewage sludge, which will help drive circular economy solutions; Innovation: The UK has a huge number of water tech start-ups and most water companies have labs and pilot schemes to support these fledgling companies. At the same time, the English regulator, Ofwat, has established a huge innovation fund, which along with the Scottish Hydro Nation initiative has made the UK the best place in the world for water innovation and tech.

Abstract:
The first-mile, last-mile problem is a significant deterrent for potential transit riders, especially in suburban neighborhoods with low density. Transit agencies have typically sought to solve this problem by adding parking spaces near transit stations and adding stops to connect riders to fixed-route transit. However, these measures are often only short-term solutions. In the last few years, transit agencies have tested whether new mobility services, such as ridehailing, ridesharing, and microtransit, can offer fast, reliable connections to and from transit stations. However, there is limited research that evaluates the potential impacts of these projects. Concurrently, there is growing interest in the future of automated vehicles (AVs) and the potential of AVs to solve this first-mile problem by reducing the cost of providing these new mobility services to promote access to transit. This paper expands upon existing research to model the simulate the travel and revenue impacts of a fleet of automated vehicles that provide transit access services in the San Francisco Bay Area offered over a range of fares. The model simulates a fleet of AVs for first-mile transit access at different price points for three different service models (door-to-door ridehailing and ridesharing and meeting point ridesharing services). These service models include home-based drop-off and pick-up for single passenger service (e.g., Uber and Lyft), home-based drop-off and pick-up for multi-passenger service (e.g., microtransit), and meeting point multi-passenger service (e.g., Via).

The work of these researchers has shown that both approaches are strengthened by their combined use and the conclusions they lead to are full of policy implications. In the latest CEDIL Methods Brief, Edoardo Masset, Research Director, CEDIL Programme, uses three examples to offer tips on the application of modelling to evaluate development interventions and explore various policy questions. The brief shows that models and experiments should be seen as complementary, rather than as alternative approaches. Minority language media (MLM) faced significant disruption resulting from the digitalisation processes which brought in increased competition and challenged traditional business models. With a new wave of technological advancements in auto-translation, however, there may be opportunities to grow audience within different speaker groups. This blogpost considers the model of Scottish Gaelic broadcaster BBC Alba, which is sustained by a two-pronged strategy of content for speakers and non-speakers, concluding that other outlets, including newspapers, could utilise auto-translation tools to grow their audience as readership habits evolve. Caution is also expressed towards the possibility of majority-language first practices creeping in out of convenience, serving as a reminder that regulation and public funding must ensure that minority language content is continuously produced, and that the current wave of digitalisation is advantageous for MLM.

Abstract:
The report provides a review of how risk is conceived of, modelled, and mapped in studies of infectious water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) related diseases. It focuses on spatial epidemiology of cholera, malaria and dengue to offer recommendations for the field of WASH-related disease risk mapping. The report notes a lack of consensus on the definition of disease risk in the literature, which limits the interpretability of the resulting analyses and could affect the quality of the design and direction of public health interventions. In addition, existing risk frameworks that consider disease incidence separately from community vulnerability have conceptual overlap in their components and conflate the probability and severity of disease risk into a single component. The report identifies four methods used to develop risk maps, i) observational, ii) index-based, iii) associative modelling and iv) mechanistic modelling. Observational methods are limited by a lack of historical data sets and their assumption that historical outcomes are representative of current and future risks. The more general index-based methods offer a highly flexible approach based on observed and modelled risks and can be used for partially qualitative or difficult-to-measure indicators, such as socioeconomic vulnerability. For multidimensional risk measures, indices representing different dimensions can be aggregated to form a composite index or be considered jointly without aggregation. The latter approach can distinguish between different types of disease risk such as outbreaks of high frequency/low intensity and low frequency/high intensity. Associative models, including machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), are commonly used to measure current risk, future risk (short-term for early warning systems) or risk in areas with low data availability, but concerns about bias, privacy, trust, and accountability in algorithms can limit their application. In addition, they typically do not account for gender and demographic variables that allow risk analyses for different vulnerable groups. As an alternative, mechanistic models can be used for similar purposes as well as to create spatial measures of disease transmission efficiency or to model risk outcomes from hypothetical scenarios. Mechanistic models, however, are limited by their inability to capture locally specific transmission dynamics. The report recommends that future WASH-related disease risk mapping research: - Conceptualise risk as a function of the probability and severity of a disease risk event. Probability and severity can be disaggregated into sub-components. For outbreak-prone diseases, probability can be represented by a likelihood component while severity can be disaggregated into transmission and sensitivity sub-components, where sensitivity represents factors affecting health and socioeconomic outcomes of infection. -Employ jointly considered unaggregated indices to map multidimensional risk. Individual indices representing multiple dimensions of risk should be developed using a range of methods to take advantage of their relative strengths. -Develop and apply collaborative approaches with public health officials, development organizations and relevant stakeholders to identify appropriate interventions and priority levels for different types of risk, while ensuring the needs and values of users are met in an ethical and socially responsible manner. -Enhance identification of vulnerable populations by further disaggregating risk estimates and accounting for demographic and behavioural variables and using novel data sources such as big data and citizen science. This review is the first to focus solely on WASH-related disease risk mapping and modelling. The recommendations can be used as a guide for developing spatial epidemiology models in tandem with public health officials and to help detect and develop tailored responses to WASH-related disease outbreaks that meet the needs of vulnerable populations. The report’s main target audience is modellers, public health authorities and partners responsible for co-designing and implementing multi-sectoral health interventions, with a particular emphasis on facilitating the integration of health and WASH services delivery contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 (good health and well-being) and 6 (clean water and sanitation).

Pueyo, Ana, Gisela Ngoo, Editruda Daulinge, and Adriana Fajardo. The Quest for Scalable Business Models for Mini-Grids in Africa: Implementing the Keymaker Model in Tanzania. Institute of Development Studies, October 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2022.071.

Abstract:
Achieving universal electrification in sub-Saharan Africa requires creative solutions. Renewable mini-grids are a promising technology to electrify remote communities with a substantial productive demand, mainly from agro-processing. Mini-grids have experienced fast growth and there are now around 2,200 systems in the sub-Saharan Africa region. However, their economic case in the sub-continent is unclear. Most mini-grids are struggling not only to obtain a profit but also to recover costs. This Research Report describes the case of a private company in Tanzania implementing a business model for mini-grids that promotes productive uses of energy to achieve financial sustainability (the ‘Keymaker model’). A group of researchers worked jointly with the mini-grid developer to procure equipment for fish processing activities, support local entrepreneurs to use electricity productively, and to document and learn from the process. Although the business model was ultimately unsuccessful – facing high regulatory risks, high initial tariffs required to recover costs, and complex management of agro-processing activities – the project offers useful lessons and considerations for future efforts to promote mini-grids, and how public–private partnerships can help improve affordability and reduce regulatory risks.

Lavadenz, Magaly, Elvira Armas, and Natividad Robles. Bilingual Teacher Residency Programs in California: Considerations for Development and Expansion. Loyola Marymount University, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.15365/ceel.policy.7.

Abstract:
Public interest, research and policies about dual language education and the multiple benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy have led to shortages of bilingual education teachers in the state and nation. School districts and educator preparation programs are actively looking for pathways of bilingual teacher preparation to meet local demands for more dual language programs. Modeled after medical residencies, teacher residencies are deeply rooted in clinical training, typically placing residents in classrooms with experienced teachers in high-needs schools where they are supported in their development. Teacher residencies allow for the recruitment of teachers, offer strong clinical preparation, connect new teachers to mentors and provide financial incentives to retain teachers in the school/district of residency. Little is known however, about bilingual teacher residencies in the state. Following a review of various data sources, researchers find that, to date, there are few bilingual teacher residencies offered and that there is a need to expand and study bilingual teacher residencies as one of the most viable pathways to respond to this shortage.
