Full textThis thesis objective is to examine the quality of the Moroccan education system exploiting the data of the programs TIMSS and PIRLS 2011.The thesis is structured around three chapters. The first chapter examines the influence of individual student and school characteristics on school performance, as well as the important role of the school environment (effect of size and social composition). In the second chapter, we seek to estimate the optimal class size that ensures widespread success for all students at both levels, namely, the fourth year of primary school and the second year of college. The third chapter proposes to study the relationship between the social and economic composition of the school and academic performance, while demonstrating the role of social mix in student success. In order to study this relationship, we mobilize different econometric approaches, by applying a multilevel model with correction for the problem of endogeneity (chapter 1), a hierarchical semi-parametric model (chapter 2) and a contextual hierarchical semi-parametric model (chapter 3). The results show that academic performance is determined by several factors that are intrinsic to the student and also contextual. Indeed, a smaller class size and a school with a mixed social composition are the two essential elements for a favourable environment and assured learning for all students. According to our results, governments should give priority to reducing class size by limiting it to a maximum of 27 students. In addition, it is necessary to consider making the school map more flexible in order to promote social mixing at school. The results obtained allow a better understanding of the Moroccan school system, in its qualitative aspect and the justification of relevant educational policies to improve the quality of the Moroccan education system

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the study of unstably stratified homogeneous turbulence. This flow is an idealized framework introduced to investigate the turbulence developing at the centerline of a Rayleigh-Taylor mixing zone. This approach focuses on turbulent quantities, when the mean flow acts on the turbulent field through a mean density gradient.A spectral model and direct numerical simulations are used to study this turbulent flow. The validation step reveals the role of stratification terms on the energy transfer dynamic. Then, a first study shows the emergence of scaling laws in the self-similar state, together with the large scale energy distribution impact on the asymptotic state and on the flow anisotropy. In a second study, the turbulent retroaction on the mean density gradient is introduced in order to bring unstably stratified homogeneous turbulence closer to theRayleigh-Taylor turbulence dynamics. This step leads to investigate the consequences of a stratification inversion on the mixing dynamics through a variable acceleration profile

Full textNowadays, more and more calculations, including monitoring and control, are done by software. Our goal is to formally prove the correctness of some numerical calculations by using on computers some tools that have long been guaranteed by human beings like interval calculations, and particularly Taylor models calculations. Yet such theoretical tools are totally unknown to formal proof checkers. This thesis presents the construction of a library of Taylor models for PVS proof checker. We have developed addition, subtraction, multiplication by a scalar, multiplication, square, power and square root operations on Taylor models. We have also developed the exponential, sine, arctangent and hyperbolic sine and cosine on Taylor models. We have proven in PVS that the operations and functions defined in our library preserve the containment property. To the best of our knowledge, such formal proofs have never been done for the implementations of Taylor models. We have developed a PVS strategy called containment to prove the containment property of Taylor models built from the operations and functions defined. We have also developed another strategy called taylors to automatically certify inequalities and bound expressions. When a proof checker is used to establish an inequality, it can be necessary to guide the proof checker step by step during the proof. For this reason, users frequently don't do the proof. Then, our work, that simplifies the proof of inequalities and expressions boundaries, is incentive to the use of formal proof checkers. This work can be used to construct Taylor models of expressions, derive more or less accurate bounds for arithmetic expressions, certify inequalities and bound expressions. We show with two applications that our method for verifying expressions in a proof checker allows us to formally prove some expressions that appear in life critical pieces of software

Full textThe integration of an electrical machine into modern hybrid vehicles is associated with new technical constraints such as the integrability into small volume without losing certainly in performance. Therefore, the development of compacter electrical machines is a well-founded argument for car manufacturers as well as electrical machine designers. On the other hand, this finding assumes that the thermal aspects are undertaken not only during the operation of the electrical machine, but also during the design process. The internal heat generated in different areas impacts strongly the power density and the magnet health which deeply reduce the electrical machine reliability. Heat transfer modeling inside electrical machines is a tricky task because of the strong coupling between the different physics governing their operations. Indeed, the generated losses spread inside the electrical machine through three heat transfer modes which are: conduction (heat diffusion), convection(heat transport) and radiation (heat scattering). In terms of geometry, if a first approach can be carried out by considering only radial heat fluxes, the axially-transferred heat must be undertaken when it is also necessary to consider end caps effects, and particularly the heat released by the bearings. In order to carry out relevantly the thermal analysis of a permanent magnets synchronous machine, CFD based methods are used to characterize the convective heat transfer inside this machine over a large operating range. Both natural and forced convection are analyzed and the corresponding heat transfer coefficients are numerically-estimated. Empirical equations are proposed in order to take into account the coupling between thermal and fluid dynamics inside the cavities of the studied totally-enclosed machine. These correlations are integrated then into a detailed and reduced thermal network. Experimental tests are carried out using a test bench in order to measure temperature distribution in different areas of the electrical machine. Afterward, a comparison between estimated and measured temperatures shows that the results of the numerically-enhanced thermal network are in a good agreement with measurements. Thus, the proposed recommendations based on CFD modeling allow the convective heat transfer to be characterize quickly and precisely. These correlations are useful for upcoming studies dealing with convection inside automotive electrical machines as well as high speed electrical machines

Full textThe object of this research is the succession process in family businesses. The data have been collected using semi-directed interviews. Our sample consists in a small family business from the professional services sector, located in the province of Quebec, that is actually living a generational transition. In all, we did interviews with five persons: the two actual owner-managers that are about to be succeeded, their successor, and two employees that closely lived the succession. We were interested in the communicational dimension of the succession process, which we made the demonstration using the discursive model of organizations from Taylor (1993). Doing so, we observed two key moments of the process: the full-time integration of the successor in the business, and the moment when the leadership role is being transferred to him, tying up with similar findings from Longenecker and Schoen (1978).
