Abstract:
The system dynamics methodology is used to develop a computer simulation model to determine whether to add lanes to a congested highway or build a new, more direct, facility. Fundamental to this evaluation is the incorporation of non-user measures of effectiveness to go with the traditional highway user measures of effectiveness, such as the Benefit-Cost Ratio. In the system dynamics methodology three alternative forms of the model of a system are used: verbal, visual, and mathematical. The verbal description is diagrammatic and shows cause-and-effect relationships between many variables in a simple, concise manner. The visual model or "causal diagram" is translated into a mathematical model and system equations. The model is comprised of four sectors: 1. population sector 2. economic sector 3. university sector 4. transportation sector The model applies to the area of Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Roanoke (city and county). with special treatment to Virginia Tech through the university model. The simulation results of the non-user benefits along with user benefits is used to evaluate the alternatives in the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Roanoke corridor.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to develop and test a block scheduling evaluation model. Conceptual development of the model was based on a review of the literature which targeted the components of the school program most consistently identified with scheduling type: instruction, school climate, student outcomes, and operating efficiency. The model included an interview with the principal, analysis of documents, survey of teachers, and survey of students. The model was pilot tested in three high schools in Western Virginia. The principals of the three pilot schools and the researcher evaluated the model according to preestablished evaluation criteria. The evaluation identified several improvements including: instrumentation refinements aimed at providing more detailed information on teacher concerns about preparation and planning on the block schedule; data analysis refinements centering on technology; inclusion of other indicators such as standardized test scores and cost analysis; and, expansion of data collection techniques centering on systematic observation over an extended period of time.

Abstract:
This report present the work to develop a misfire detection algorithm for onboard diagnostics on a spark ignited combustion engine. The work is based on a previous developed model-based detection algorithm, created to meet more stringent future legislation and reduce the cost of calibration. In the existing approach a simplified engine model is used to estimate the torque from the flywheel angular velocity, and the algorithm can detect misfires in various conditions. The main contribution in this work, is further development of the misfire detection algorithm with focus on improving the handling of disturbances and variations between different vehicles. The resulting detection algorithm can be automatically calibrated with training data and manage disturbances such as manufacturing errors on the flywheel and torsional vibrations in the crankshaft occurring after a misfire. Furthermore a robustness analysis with different engine configurations is carried out, and the algorithm is evaluated with the Kullback- Leibler divergence correlated to the diagnosis requirements. In the validation, data from vehicles with four cylinder engines are used and the algorithm show good performance with few false alarms and missed detections.

Abstract:
The thesis is concerned with finding strategies of community development suitable for health promotion and a matching method of evaluation. The thesis contains two literature reviews. The first examines the history and practice of community development, the problems in the field of drug abuse prevention, especially in its evaluation, and recent developments in health promotion within the context of the new public health movement. The second literature review chapter examines qualitative methodology and in particular recent developments in the use of case studies. The design of the study in the thesis utilises multiple-case studies and explanation-building with data matrix construction as the method of analysis. Two multiple case studies of thirteen and twelve cases respectively use data from the Community Approach to Drug Abuse Prevention (CADAP) Project. Detailed analysis of ten matrices are presented for the First Stage Multiple-Case Study and three for the second. Major conclusions are drawn about how a successful performance in the processes of preparation and training in community development lead to later successful community activity. Whether the preparation and training is done by staff of the CADAP Project or by trained staff of host organisations makes no difference to this outcome. Conclusions are drawn about community development in general, its application to health promotion and its evaluation.

The thermal interaction between the skin and an object is influenced by the thermal properties and initial temperatures of the skin and object, and by the contact force and surface roughness of the contact surfaces. This thermal interaction is modeled in this research which characterizes the transient thermal responses during contact. The thermal model was evaluated in psychophysical and physiological experiments by determining whether simulated thermal feedback generated based on the model was capable of conveying information to users that was similar to that provided by real materials, and by comparing the temperature responses of the skin predicted by the model and elicited by real materials. In order to obtain precise skin temperature measurements, an infrared thermal measurement system was designed to overcome the limitations imposed by thermal sensors and to determine the influence of contact pressure on the skin temperature responses during contact. The results from the psychophysical and physiological experiments validated the thermal model proposed in this research within the typical contact force range of manual exploration. A thermal display based on this model is able to convey thermal cues that can be used to perceive and identify objects as effectively as those provided by real materials.

Better Schools advocated a decentralisation in the administrative structure and a devolution of responsibilities within Western Australian education system. One outcome was the establishment of twenty nine school districts in 1987. Since then, these districts have faced the problem of providing for the professional development needs of their primary school principals. In response to this situation different districts have developed different models for the training and development of principals. This research evaluates, as a case study, a particular model developed in one of the districts. To help preserve the anonymity of the district chosen, it is referred to throughout the study under the fictitious name of the Fairmont district. The evaluation centres around the question: From the view point of meeting corporate managerial needs, is there justification for the continued use of the Fairmont model? To answer this question, the study focuses only on primary school principals in the district.

Abstract:
Software testing is a crucial but cost consuming practice in the development of safety critical software-intensive systems. In industry software testing techniques are chosen heuristically rather than scientifically. Researchers have studied for many years which test method is more efficient and effective in an industrial setting. Nevertheless, test design decisions still remain a challenge when applied in industry. Structural testing effectiveness is influenced by program code structure and the software development method used for designing and implementing industrial software-intensive systems. In the field of structural testing, the industrial approach toward different development methods and programming standards is studied insufficiently in the literature. In this thesis, we have found that applying structural testing on the actual generated source code from a Function Block Diagram (FBD) conforming to the IEC 61131-3 industrial standard is not effective. The FBD model is transformed to an FBD program code composed of almost exclusively assignments with Boolean expressions and function calls, which are not detected in code coverage analysis. In this thesis, we use the FBD model as a good candidate for measuring structural coverage, since it expresses the system behavior and it is the model from which the actual target code is generated. We propose a new automated method with potential application to our case study that evaluates the test suite based on structural coverage criteria. This leads to a shorter lifecycle with more effective structural testing for model-driven software development.

Abstract:
In recent years carbon dioxide (CO2, R-744)has moved to the foreground as an environmentally friendly alternative to commonly used CFCs and HFCs, which are being phased out due to its high ozone depleting and global warming potentials. R-744 is not only environmentally friendly but due to its unique properties, it is also ideally suited for the use in heat pump water heaters. High cycle efficiencies are achievable even at high hot water temperatures. The high cycle efficiency not only leads to energy and cost savings but also ties in with the drive for implementation of energy saving measures in South Africa. It is therefore paramount to continue development and implementation of R-744 in heat pump water heaters. Optimizing the cycle efficiency is only possible if detailed component simulation models, taking these unique properties of R-744 into account, are available. The purpose of this study therefore was to develop a detail simulation model of a concentric tube-in-tube water-to-refrigerant evaporator, as well as a fin-and-tube air-to-refrigerant evaporator model. Data from the North-West University R-744 heat pump test bench were used to verify the tube-in-tube evaporator simulation model. The discrepancies in the cooling capacity between the simulation and test bench can be attributed to the presence of lubricant in the system.The fin-and-tube model was verified by testing it against the NIST program EVAP-COND (NIST 2010). Overall there was good agreement between the results of the two programs, with EVAP-COND predicting a lower cooling capacity(6% to 14%) and and a higher pressure refrigerant pressure drop (30% to 50%). It was found that both the heat transfer correlation of Jung et al. (1989) and the pressure drop correlation of Choi et al. (1999) are able to predict the experimental values accurately and are valid for use in both the evaporator models developed. To demonstrate the use of the detail evaporator fin-and-tube model, an evaluation of the different tube geometries, commercially available in South Africa, for use with R-744 fin-and-tube evaporators was done. For a fin-and-tube evaporator it was found that the most cost effective option is to use ⅜" (10.05 mm)copper tubes and the least effective is " (12.6 mm) stainless steel tubes.

This study was driven by a need that was identified within a large telecommunications organisation to establish the Talent Management competencies required of line managers, and to provide HR managers with a measure to constructively, rationally and purposefully manage the Talent Management performance of line managers. In an attempt to address the above research needs, the study set about to 1) identify the Talent Management competencies required by line managers in order to successfully implement the organisation’s Talent Management strategy; 2) formulate these competencies within a model, and 3) determine what the desired Talent Management outcomes are and how these relate to line managers’ Talent Management competencies. The initial part of this study describes the development of a Talent Management competency 360° evaluation questionnaire. This objective was achieved by means of a literature search, followed by the Critical Incidents Technique (CIT) of interviewing. The questionnaire consists of 8 dimensions and 43 items. The sample consisted of 123 leadership development candidates within this organisation. A total of 357 questionnaires were obtained. A comprehensive Talent Management competency model was developed that defines and describes the line manager behaviours required in order to successfully carry out the Talent Management strategies within an organisation. These competencies were evaluated against the outcomes of Job Satisfaction, Affective Commitment and Intention to Quit that the Talent Management competencies are meant to affect. Item analysis and dimensionality analysis were performed on each of the subscales, using SPSS. Thereafter, confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the relevant measurement model data sets, using LISREL. The results indicated in all cases satisfactory measurement model fit. Subsequently, the comprehensive Talent Management competency structural model was tested using LISREL. Reasonable to good model fit was indicated for the structural model. Ten of the 24 stated hypotheses in this study were corroborated. A notable unique result of this research presented itself in the significant positive relationships uncovered between the exogenous latent variable, Talent Management Mindset, and the endogenous latent variables of Attracts and Recruits Talent, Builds and Maintains Relationships, Provides Meaningful and Challenging Work, Remunerates and Rewards Fairly and Manages Work-life Balance. These significant positive relationships provide empirical evidence for the first time of the importance of instilling a Talent Management mindset within the line managers. Additional significant links established between Affective Commitment and Intention to Quit, between Attracts and Recruits Talent and Organisational Job Satisfaction, and between Organisational Job Satisfaction and Intention to Quit corroborates previous research findings.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Work Engagement is one construct of many that forms part of the complex nomological network of constructs underlying the behaviour of working man2. Work Engagement is an important construct both from an individual as well as from an organisational perspective. Human resource management interventions aimed at enhancing Work Engagement aspire to contribute to the achievement of the organisation’s primary objective and the well-being of the organisation’s employees. Such interventions will most likely also be valued by individuals within the workplace, as individuals will be able to experience a sense of personal fulfilment through self-expression at work. It is therefore essential to gain a valid understanding of the Work Engagement construct and the psychological mechanism that underpins it, in order to design human resource interventions that will successfully enhance Work Engagement. The current study raises the question why variance in Work Engagement exists amongst different employees working in different organisational contexts. The research objective of the current study is to develop and empirically test an explanatory Work Engagement structural model that will provide a valid answer to this question. In this study, a comprehensive Work Engagement structural model was proposed. An ex post facto correlational design with structural equation modelling (SEM) as the statistical analysis technique was used to test the substantive research hypotheses as represented by the Work Engagement structural model. Furthermore, the current study tested two additional narrow-focus structural models describing the impact of value congruence on Work Engagement by using an ex post facto correlational design with polynomial regression as the statistical analysis technique. A convenience sample of 227 teachers working in public sector schools falling under the jurisdiction of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) participated in the study. The comprehensive Work Engagement model achieved reasonable close fit. Support was found for all of the hypothesised theoretical relationships in the Work Engagement structural model, except for the influence of the PsyCap*Job Characteristics interaction effect on Meaningfulness and for three of the five latent polynomial regression terms added in the model in an attempt to derive response surface test values. The response surface analyses findings were mixed. Based on the obtained results, meaningful practical recommendations were derived.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Werkverbintenis1 is een van ‘n groot verskeidenheid konstrukte wat deel vorm van die komplekse nomologiese netwerk van konstrukte wat die gedrag van die arbeidende mens onderlê. Werkverbintenis word as ‘n belangrike konstruk beskou vanuit ‘n individuele sowel as vanuit ‘n organisatoriese perspektief. Menslike hulpbronbestuurs-intervensies gerig op die bevordering van Werkverbintenis streef daarna om by te dra tot die bereiking van die organisasie se primêre doel sowel as tot die welstand van die organisasie se werknemers. Sodanige intervensies sal waarskynlik ook deur werknemers waardeer word, aangesien sodanige intervensies die kanse verhoog dat individue selfvervulling in hul werk sal ervaar omdat die werk hul die geleentheid bied om hulself in hul werk uit te leef. Dit is gevolglik noodsaaklik om ‘n geldige begrip te ontwikkel van die Werkverbintenis-konstruk en die sielkundige meganisme wat dit onderlê ten einde menslike hulpronbestuurs-intervensies te ontwerp wat suksesvol Werkverbintenis sal bevorder. Die huidige studie stel die vraag aan die orde waarom variansie in Werkverbintenis tussen verskillende werknemers bestaan wat in verskillende organisatoriese kontekste werk. Die navorsingsdoelstelling van die huidige studie is om ‘n verklarende Werkverbintenisstrukturele model te ontwikkel en te toets wat ‘n geldige antwoord op hierdie vraag sal bied. ‘n Omvattende Werkverbintenis strukturele model is in hierdie studie voorgestel. ‘n Ex post facto korrelatiewe ontwerp met strukturele vergelykingsmodellering (SVM) as die statistiese ontledingstegniek is gebruik om die substantiewe navorsingshipotese soos voorgestel deur die Werkverbintenis strukturele model te toets. Die huidige studie het voorts twee addisionele nouer-fokus strukturele modelle getoets wat die impak van waardekongruensie op Werkverbintenis beskryf deur middel van ‘n ex post facto korrelatiewe ontwerp met polinomiese regressie-ontleding as statistiese ontledingstegniek. ‘n Geriefsteekproef van 227 onderwysers wat in openbare skole werksaam is wat onder die beheer van die Wes Kaapse Department van Onderwys val (WKDO) het aan die studie deelgeneem. Die omvattende Werkverbintenis-model het redelik goeie pasgehalte getoon. Steun is gevind vir all die voorgestelde teoretiese verwantskappe in die Werkverbintenis strukturele model, behalwe vir die invloed van die Sielkundige kapitaal*Werk eienskappe-interaksie-effek op Betekenisvolheid en vir drie van die vyf polinomiese latente regressie-terme wat in die model ingesluit is in ‘n poging om responsoppervlakte-waardes af te lei. Gemengde resultate is verkry vir die responsoppervlakte-ontleding. Betekenisvolle praktiese aanbevelings is gemaak op grond van die navorsingsresultate.

Abstract:
C-Maize VT1.0 is a simulation model of corn (Zea mays) growth in a soil plant atmosphere continuum. The purpose of developing the C-Maize VT1.0 simulation model was to provide an additional tool to researcher’s investigating the affects of water and nitrogen stress on corn growth and the movement of water and nitrates in the soil. The user may select either a 1-dimensional or a 2-dimensional approach to the simulation of the soil system. After an initial series of runs and a preliminary assessment of the model’s credibility it was concluded that the 2-dimensional approach provided a ‘sufficiently credible’ solution to modeling all aspects of the soil-plant-atmosphere system. The 1-dimensional approach as currently programmed provides a ‘non-credible solution’. The 1-dimensional approach failed to adequately simulate the soil subsystem and failed to simulate the plant’s response to water and nitrogen stresses.

Many (25%) minor burn patients fail to attend hospital review. Investigation of a novel streamlined model of care found that selected patients who were assessed with a mailed survey (the Burn Specific Health Scale – Brief) had a similar outcome to those that received standard care. Psychometric evaluation of the scale demonstrated strong validity in this population for the first time. A predictive nomogram employed as a safety net in the model was developed and validated.

To evaluate improvements of the tracking performance, a componentthat is similar to the one used in SAAB’s present tracker was implementedin an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) structure. The use of an Auxiliary ParticleFilter for improving the tracking performance is explored, and a way to fita particle filter into SAAB’s existing IMM framework is proposed. The differentfilters were implemented in Matlab, and evaluation was done by the meansof Monte Carlo simulations. The results from Monte Carlo simulations show significantimprovement when tracking in two dimensions. However, the results inthree dimensions do not display any substantial overall improvement when usingthe particle filter compared to using SAAB’s present filter. It is therefore notworthwhile to switch the filter used in SAAB’s present tracker for a particle filter,at least not under the high SNR circumstances presented in this thesis. However,further studies within this area are recommended before any final decisions aremade.

Generating code from software models is considered to be a new generation leap within software development methods. The objective of this M.Sc. project is to evaluate how different approaches to modelling and code generation affect embedded systems software development and propose recommendations on how to improve software development. Two product areas at Saab Surveillance EW Systems in Järfälla, Stockholm, are used as study objects. A research overview is made to highlight themes regarding modelling, code generation and software development in general. Based on these, interviews are held with system engineers and software developers at each product area, where they use different modelling and code generation approaches. The two development processes are described thoroughly. Challenges and advantages related to each area’s approach are investigated. Software development within product area A is affected by the product complexity and the larger scale of the development, including projects running over a longer time with more teams involved. Recommendations include enabling code generation by aligning it with other investments on process improvement and limiting the approach to generating some system components. Software developers within product area B can use full code generation, enabled by the limited product complexity. The product area is affected by software standards and external requirements on the process. Recommendations include extending the modelling approach to make it easier to trace functionality from system to software level. Conclusions are that both product areas can apply modelling and code generation to more software development activities to improve their respective development processes.

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for the evaluation of training programs offered within corporate settings most often focused on the management staff. The study is based on the notion that in order to claim success, a training program first must meet a set of criteria that allows it to be called a "program". This means that a "training program" must be able to establish that the claims it makes about its outcomes (rules of success) are in fact achieved through some specified activity in the classroom (rules of action). The study attempts to answer the question; Can an evaluation process be developed and implemented that will allow training managers to make informed policy decisions without depending solely upon on participant reactions? Further it sought to shift the methodology to process of evaluation from an inductive one to a deductive one. That is, rather than drawing generalizations about program success from specific reports of outcomes alone it sought to arrive at specific conclusions by viewing a program as a total mechanism, with both inputs and outputs clearly delineated. Finally, the study attempted to provide a number of working tools to practitioners who might be engaged in the evaluative process employing this methodology. Procedure: This study was conducted over. a period of two years in a working corporate training environment. During the first six months the model presented in this study was developed and tested and over the subsequent eighteen months it was implemented in actual corporate training sessions. Four tasks were accomplished. First, a logical matrix was created intended to be used by evaluators to link each stated program objectives to the specific classroom activities designed to achieve them. Second, a series of activity focused worksheets were developed whose purpose was to assist the evaluator in that phase of the data collection effort. Third, a participant reaction questionnaire was developed that would be completed at the end of the program. And fourth, a follow-up instrument was developed to be administered in the working environment at intervals of 30, 90 and 120 days after the finish of the course. CONCLUSIONS: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. It is possible to construct a deductive model for program evaluation that allows trainers/policy makers to reveal how the structure of a program to determine its effects. 2. The deductive model provides a level of infrastructural detail required but often unable to achieve through traditional methods of training program evaluation. 3. Coupling a detailed structural model with superordinate feedback permits the long term "take and "use" of a training program to be more precisely measured. 4. The methodology of this evaluation model is cost competitive with other procedures. 5. The findings indicate that the rational of this deductive model is more acceptable to corporate trainers/policy makers.

Le modèle compact HICUM niveau 2, basé sur la physique, est utilisé pour modéliser précisément le composant avant vieillissement, puis pour ajuster les caractéristiques intermédiaires pendant le vieillissement. L’évolution des paramètres du modèle est décrit avec des équations appropriées pour obtenir un modèle électrique compact du vieillissement basé sur la physique. Modern InP Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (HBT) technology has shown its efficiency for making large signal ICs working above 100 Gbits/s for Ethernet optical transport network. To full-fill this expectation, a good reliability has to be assured. Accelerated aging tests under thermal and electro-thermal stress conditions are performed and analyzed with Sentaurus TCAD device simulation tools to achieve the physical aging laws. The physics based advanced bipolar compact model HICUM Level 2 is used for precise modeling of the devices before aging. The HICUM parameters are extracted to fit the intermediate characterizations during aging. The evolution of the model parameters is described with suitable equations to achieve a physics based compact electrical aging model. The aging laws and the parameter evolution equations with stress time are implemented in compact electrical aging model in Verilog-A languages which allows us to simulate the impact of device failure mechanisms on the circuit in operating conditions

The provision of work experience opportunities for students at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is an important feature in promoting the practical application of theory learned in the classroom. At the outset of this study, the variety and scope of work experience programs at CIT was not known and there were no apparent efforts to co-ordinate this activity. The effectiveness of these programs was not known, and there were no strategies in place to measure their worth. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe work experience programs, to analyse existing evaluation methods and to propose a Model of Evaluation appropriate to the maximum number of programs. The review of related literature resulted in the selection of Stake's comprehensive Countenance Model (1967), chosen for its consideration of the complexities of purpose and the wide variety of experiences which students may encounter. A significant part of the application of Stake's Model was the development of an Evaluation Kit for Work Experience Co- Ordinators at CIT and the subsequent trial on the Work Placement subject of the Certificate in Travel course in the School of Tourism and Hospitality. Stake's Countenance Model of Evaluation appears to embody an appropriate structure to measure the worth of programs. Recommendations for future directions include the wider trial of the Kit in a greater number of programs to further establish its usefulness to decision-makers, and the need to remain alert to emerging issues and trends in work experience practice in Australia.

A nonparametric population approach is now accessible to a more comprehensive network of modelers given its recent implementation into the popular NONMEM application, previously limited in scope by standard parametric approaches for the analysis of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data. The aim of this thesis was to assess the relative merits and downsides of nonparametric models in a nonlinear mixed effects framework in comparison with a set of parametric models developed in NONMEM based on real datasets and when applied to simple experimental settings, and to develop new diagnostic tools adapted to nonparametric models. Nonparametric models as implemented in NONMEM VI showed better overall simulation properties and predictive performance than standard parametric models, with significantly less bias and imprecision in outcomes of numerical predictive check (NPC) from 25 real data designs. This evaluation was carried on by a simulation study comparing the relative predictive performance of nonparametric and parametric models across three different validation procedures assessed by NPC. The usefulness of a nonparametric estimation step in diagnosing distributional assumption of parameters was then demonstrated through the development and the application of two bootstrapping techniques aiming to estimate imprecision of nonparametric parameter distributions. Finally, a novel covariate modeling approach intended for nonparametric models was developed with good statistical properties for identification of predictive covariates. In conclusion, by relaxing the classical normality assumption in the distribution of model parameters and given the set of diagnostic tools developed, the nonparametric approach in NONMEM constitutes an attractive alternative to the routinely used parametric approach and an improvement for efficient data analysis.

Inherent safety has been recognized as a design approach useful to remove or reduce hazards at the source instead of controlling them with add-on protective barriers. However, inherent safety is based on qualitative principles that cannot easily be evaluated and analyzed, and this is one of the major difficulties for the systematic application and quantification of inherent safety in plant design. The present research introduces the use of fuzzy logic for the measurement of inherent safety by proposing a hierarchical fuzzy model. This dissertation establishes a novel conceptual framework for the analysis of inherent safety and proposes a methodology that addresses several of the limitations of the methodologies available for current inherent safety analysis. This research proposes a methodology based on a hierarchical fuzzy model that analyzes the interaction of variables relevant for inherent safety and process safety in general. The use of fuzzy logic is helpful for modeling uncertainty and subjectivities implied in evaluation of certain variables and it is helpful for combining quantitative data with qualitative information. Fuzzy logic offers the advantage of being able to model numerical and heuristic expert knowledge by using fuzzy IF-THEN rules. Safety is traditionally considered a subjective issue because of the high uncertainty associated with its significant descriptors and parameters; however, this research recognizes that rather than subjective, "safety" is a vague problem. Vagueness derives from the fact that it is not possible to define sharp boundaries between safe and unsafe states; therefore the problem is a "matter of degree". The proposed method is computer-based and process simulator-oriented in order to reduce the time and expertise required for the analysis. It is expected that in the future, by linking the present approach to a process simulator, process engineers can develop safety analysis during the early stages of the design in a rapid and systematic way. Another important aspect of inherent safety, rarely addressed, is transportation of chemical substances; this dissertation includes the analysis of transportation hazard by truck using a fuzzy logic-based approach.

In this degree project a modied point-mass trajectory model has been developed and evaluated using real ring data. The model has been simulated using the simulation framework FLAMES where external conditions such as weather and terrain data are taken into account. The dataused in the evaluation consists of a series of rings performed by the Swedish Armed Forces in year 2001. The data includes the locations of the gun, the target and the impact areas as well as the measured weather data. The results show that the model correlates well with the real data in general, and lengthwise in particular where most of the errors remain within 60 meters.

This thesis work aims for the development of an autonomous model car to evaluate an indoor Ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning system and for the investigation of integrating a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor to the final system. The goal to be achieved is that the model car should be able to receive a travel plan specified by the user, run autonomously along the plan by receiving the continuously updated position and stop in front of obstacles. A prototype of such a model car has been developed. It is shown that it was able to travel along the plan specified by a user with aid of the positioning system and proven that the concept of an autonomous vehicle guided with the positioning system works. The model car was tested and the performance of it merged with the positioning system was evaluated by travelling along a circle and a sharp, 90° corner and by measuring the lap times from the travelling for various error margins. The error margin decides when a destination is deemed reached. The test results show that the model car has limitations to its slowest speed and turning radius. The results also show that the positioning system has significant position updating latency. Integrating a LIDAR to the model car is shown to be beneficial, in particular, when adding information of e.g. walls and doors in advance and the LIDAR then acting as a perceptive system to obtain information of the unknown parts of the surrounding. This can then result in a time optimal travel plan that can adapt to a dynamic environment.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South Africa, selection from a diverse population poses a formidable challenge. The challenge lies in subgroup difference in the performance criterion. Protected group members perform systematically lower on the criterion due to systematic, group-related differences in learning and job competency potential latent variables required to succeed in learning and on the job. These subgroup differences are attributable to the unequal development and distribution of intellectual capital across racial-ethnic subgroups due to systemic historical disadvantagement. This scenario has made it difficult for organisations in South Africa to meet equity targets when selecting applicants from a diverse group representative of the South African population, while at the same time maintaining production and efficiency targets. Therefore there is an urgent need for affirmative development. Ensuring that those admitted to affirmative development interventions successfully develop the job competency potential and job competencies required to succeed on the job requires that the appropriate people are selected into these interventions. Selection into affirmative development opportunities represents an attempt to improve the level of Learning performance during evaluation of learners admitted to affirmative development opportunities. A valid understanding of the identity of the determinants of learning performance in conjunction with a valid understanding of how they combine to determine the level of learning performance achieved should allow the valid prediction of Learning performance during evaluation. The primary objective of the present study was to integrate and elaborate the De Goede (2007) and the Burger (2012) learning potential models in a manner that circumvents the problems and shortcomings of these models by developing an extended explanatory learning performance structural model that explicates additional cognitive and non-cognitive learning competency potential latent variables that affect learning performance and that describes the manner in which these latent variables combine to affect learning performance. A total of 213 participants took part in the study. The sample was predominantly made up of students from previously disadvantaged groups on the extended degree programme of a university in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The proposed De Goede – Burger – Mahembe Learning Potential Structural Model was tested via structural equation modeling after performing item and dimensional analyses. Item and dimensional analyses were performed to identify poor items and ensure uni-dimensionality. Uni-dimensionality is a requirement for item parcel creation. Item parcels were used due to sample size restrictions. The fit of the measurement and structural models can generally be regarded as reasonable and both models showed close fit. Significant relationships were found between: Information processing capacity and Learning Performance during evaluation; Self-leadership and Motivation to learn; Motivation to learn and Time-engaged-on-task; Self efficacy and Self-leadership; Knowledge about cognition and Regulation of cognition; Regulation of cognition and Time-cognitively-engaged; Learning goal orientation and Motivation to learn; Openness to experience and Learning goal orientation. Support was not found for the relationships between Conscientiousness and Time-cognitively-engaged, as well as between Time-cognitively-engaged and Learning performance. The hypothesised moderating effect of Prior learning on the relationship between Abstract reasoning capacity and Learning performance during evaluation was not supported. The statistical power of the test of close fit for the comprehensive LISREL model was examined. The discriminant validity of the item parcels were ascertained. The limitations of the research and suggestions for future studies have been highlighted. The results of the present study provide some important insights for educators and training and development specialists on how to identify potential students and talent for affirmative development in organisations in South Africa.

Low Impact Development (LID) is gaining popularity as a solution to erosion, flooding, and water quality problems that stormwater ponds partially address. LID analysis takes a spatially lumped approach, based on maintaining the predevelopment Curve Number and time of concentration, precluding consideration of the spatial distribution of impervious areas and Integrated Management Practices (IMPâ s), runoff-runon processes, and the effects of land grading. Success is thus dependent on the accuracy of the assumption of watershed uniformity, applied to both land cover distribution and flow path length.

Considering the cost of long-term paired watershed monitoring, continuous, spatially-distributed hydrologic modeling was judged a better method to compare the response of LID, forest, and conventional development. Review of available models revealed EPA-SWMM 4.4H as the most applicable to the task. A 4.3-acre subwatershed of a local subdivision was adapted to LID using impervious surface disconnection, forest retention, and IMPâ s. SWMM was applied to the LID development at a fine spatial scale, yielding an 80-element SWMM model. The LID model was modified to reflect conventional development, with gutters, storm sewer, and detention. A predevelopment forest model was also developed. Two parameter sets were used, representing a range of assumptions characterized as favorable or unfavorable toward a particular development form. Modeled scenarios included favorable and unfavorable versions of Forest, LID, uncontrolled Conventional Development, and Conventional Development with Stormwater Management. SWMM was run in continuous mode using local rainfall data, and event mode using NRCS design storms. Runoff volumes, peak flows, and flow duration curves were compared.

Synthetic unit hydrographs, which assume uniform rainfall excess distribution and static watershed conditions, are frequently used to estimate hydrograph characteristics when observed data are unavailable. The objective of this research was to develop a spatially distributed unit hydrograph (SDUH) model that directly reflects spatial variation in the watershed in generating runoff hydrographs.

The SDUH model is a time-area unit hydrograph technique that uses a geographic information system (GIS) to develop a cumulative travel time map of the watershed based on cell by cell estimates of overland and channel flow velocities. The model considers slope, land use, watershed position, channel characteristics, and rainfall excess intensity in determining flow velocities. The cumulative travel time map is divided into isochrones which are used to generate a time-area curve and the resulting unit hydrograph.

Predictions of the SDUH model along with the Snyder, SCS, and Clark synthetic unit hydrographs were compared with forty observed storm events from an 1153-ha Virginia Piedmont watershed. The SDUH model predictions were comparable or slightly better than those from the other models, with the lowest relative error in the peak flow rate prediction for 12 of the 40 storms, and a model efficiency of at least 0.90 for 21 of the storms. Despite the good predictions of the hydrograph peak flow rate and shape, the time to peak was underpredicted for 34 of the 40 storms.

Runoff from the 40 storms was also generated for two subwatersheds (C: 462 ha; D: 328 ha) in Owl Run to assess the effect of scale on the SDUH model. Peak flow rate predictions were more accurate for the entire watershed than for either subwatershed. The time to peak prediction and model efficiency statistics were comparable for the entire watershed and subwatershed D. Subwatershed C had poorer predictions, which were attributed to a large pond in the main channel, rather than to scale effects.

The SDUH model provides a framework for predicting runoff hydrographs for ungauged watersheds that can reflect the spatially distributed nature of the rainfall-runoff process. Predictions were comparable to the other synthetic unit hydrograph techniques. Because the time to peak and model efficiency statistics were similar for the 1153-ha watershed and a 328-ha subwatershed, scale does not have a major impact on the accuracy of the SDUH model.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction that is caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Sepsis is a substantial health care and economic burden worldwide and is one of the most common reasons for admission to the hospital and intensive care unit. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment of sepsis are the bases to reduce the mortality and morbidity. Conventional blood culturing is the gold standard method for sepsis diagnostics. However, blood culturing is a time consuming method, requiring at least 48 to 72 hours to get the first results with very low sensitivity and specificity. The aim of this study was to determine and assess the direct sepsis-related costs for PCR-based diagnostic strategies (SeptiFast and POC/LAB). A mathematical model was constructed to compare PCR-based diagnostic strategies with the conventional blood culturing. Three case scenarios were investigated based on data from the United Kingdom, Spain and the Czech Republic. It was found that, POC/LAB was the most cost effective strategy in all countries if it could reduce the hospitalization length of stay with at least 3 days in the normal hospital ward and 1 day in the intensive care unit. Reducing the hospitalization length of stay had the greatest impact on the economic outcomes. While, reducing the costs of the diagnostic strategies did not show a remarkable effect on the economic results. In conclusion, the findings suggest that PCR-rapid diagnostic methods could be cost-effective for the diagnosis of patients with sepsis if they could reduce the hospitalization length of stay.

According to recent studies it is indicated that 84% of American companies are in the process of at least one change initiative and that 46% indicated that they were busy with three or more change initiatives. This tendency is a worldwide phenomenon. For organisations to survive and grow in this setting, their rate of learning has to be equal or greater than the rate of change in their environment. Within this context the need for relevant leadership becomes imperative. Empirical evidence would suggest that there is a strong link between leadership competencies and leadership performance. With this in mind a large mining company in South Africa took the root of identifying specific competencies that they would like to see developed in their leaders. The specific company gave direction with outcomes that had to be obtained:  to position the leaders that they could practice their leadership role effectively to meet immediate and future challenges; and  to do specific leadership training investment for the empowering of leadership in attaining greater organizational success. Taking the current research and organisational need into consideration the researcher set out in developing a model that group these competencies in five mainstream domains, Personal mastery and well being, fulfilling my functional role effectively, Achieving with people, Actualizing a sustainable and desirable future and Navigating the organisational landscape successfully. It is against this backdrop that the Professional Leadership Development Model took shape. The study is set up in different phases that will play out in the following manner:

Promenade breakwaters have been appreciated greatly since their comfortable materials, colors and forms have safety facilities and are in high harmony with the natural environment. For highly developed coast areas promenade breakwaters have been increasingly built abroad. However, there are no promenade breakwaters until now in Taiwan. Therefore, it is important to set up available evaluation models for future constructions of promenade breakwaters. The purpose of this paper is to propose some fair evaluation models for promenade breakwaters so that they can provide leading references for designing breakwaters.   The research proceedings have four steps. The first step is to choose three previously proposed evaluation methods for landscape. These are SD method (Semantic Differential Method), VIA method (Visual Impact Analysis) and SBE method (Scenic Beauty Estimation Method). In the second step, we chose six different pictures about breakwaters, and designed a set of questionnaire in which both the background data of visitants and sensational measure are included. The third step is to statistically analyze all questionnaires. The last step is to explain final outcomes when we related them to corresponding factors by one-way Anova method.   The results shows that SD method is a sensible examination but not a good evaluation for promenade breakwaters and only offers leading favorite factors of people for them. Secondly, Both VIA method and SBE method are suitable to evaluate the promenade breakwaters.

Due to the rapid progress of science and technology, the network technology provides many innovative applications, and makes the whole world just like your next door neighbors. It becomes an important issue of either the public or the private organizations to think about – how to utilize the network tech linking to the world to survive as a universal citizen. The web-page is a design tech of multi-dimensional, collective technologies. It is a professional technique which combines together the science, technology and arts including network tech, computer programming, web-page arrangement, animation, multi-media audio/video tech, …etc. The question is “How to introduce your organization to the outside world via the web-page or web-site tech to enhance one’s competition ability?”. Depending on various working characteristics, strategic applications, and the small size of the organization usually is conducted through the outsourcing process-to entrust a professional company to do the job. This research mainly explores a more objective model which uses a more scientific synthesis method on the opinions gathered from all departments of the organization, to find out the most suitable contractor for the organization’s web-page development task in the outsourcing process.
