Abstract:
Synergistic effects arise as effects of joint action based on mergers or acquisitions. Bundling is a common part of the growth strategy. A merger may acquire forms of merger or merger. Acquisition represents the acquisition of the ownership and management value of one company over another. Theory distinguishes in this case from property acquisitions in which the acquisition of the company's assets and capital acquisitions occurs, in which the acquisition of a decisive share in the voting rights of the company is obtained. Reasons for merger and acquisition are to gain more market share, restructure entities, improve balance of payments, and so on. The success of the merger and the acquisition confirms the emergence of a synergy effect. In determining the value of synergies in this article was used newly created Model H, which is based on a valuation of the business enterprise.

Abstract:
Purpose Academic libraries continue to invest in eBooks to ensure access to content in various formats. This paper aims to examine eBook acquisition models, including patron-driven acquisitions, one-time purchases, focused collection subscriptions or large-scale subscriptions, to better understand how users engage with this content based on usage data. Design/methodology/approach Usage data provide insights into eBook acquisition and how access models influence use. This study defines the acquisition model for each eBook purchase. Data were examined to determine usage by acquisition model and cost-per-use. Findings This paper finds that for a large suburban community college, a large-scale subscription model has the lowest cost-per-use and serves the largest portion of students. Focused collection subscriptions supported small, specialized programs in the Allied Health, Emergency Services, and Nursing fields. Originality/value This paper examines how eBooks are acquired to determine which model best serves an academic library community, specifically a community college library, which is currently underrepresented in the literature.

Abstract:
In the process of expanding operations, enterprises often encounter bottlenecks in terms of capital, technology, management, and other aspects. In order to tackle these problems, enterprises often choose to issue bonds, go public, mergers and acquisitions, etc. to expand their production and business scope, update management models, and improve their competitiveness. Due to the short introduction of the merger and acquisition mechanism, the analysis and research of mergers and acquisitions by various enterprises are relatively shallow, and the success rate of mergers and acquisitions by Chinese enterprises is low. This study conducts a research and analysis on the first merger and acquisition case on the Science and Technology Innovation Board, i.e., the case of Huaxing Yuanchuang's acquisition of Olyto. Based on PEG and EVA valuation models, it analyzes the motivation and results of Huaxing Yuanchuang's acquisition of Olyto's business behavior. By valuing and comparing the stock price of Huaxing Yuanchuang before and after the merger and acquisition behavior, the conclusion that the merger and acquisition behavior is not successful is drawn. Research has found that under the PEG valuation model, the stock price of Huaxingyuan Chuang after the merger is slightly overvalued, while under the EVA valuation model, the stock price is greatly underestimated.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of the study is to gain insights into the post-acquisition integration practices of Indian multinational companies involved in cross-border acquisitions. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on the primary data from a sample of Indian companies engaged in cross-border acquisitions. A survey (based on a structured questionnaire) method has been used to collect the relevant data. Findings Majority of the sample companies have successfully managed the post-acquisition phase and realized the anticipated synergies. These companies recognize the importance of cultural integration, people/HR integration and formal communication channel during the post-acquisition phase. Despite the integration strategy being profoundly influenced by cultural differences between two companies, the emphasis on these cultural differences especially during the due-diligence stage is lacking. These aspects have not been examined adequately during the due-diligence phase. Practical implications Based on the findings, a model of cross-border acquisition and integration process (AIP) in the context of emerging economies has been proposed; the model is expected to be applicable across all industries and organizations, especially in emerging economies. The proposed model should essentially help senior and middle managers to develop successful integration strategies. Moreover, the study holds immense potential for practitioners and academicians by providing them with a new thought on executing successful acquisitions. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study has examined the post-acquisition integration approach in emerging economies. Moreover, rarely has any AIP model applicable across several organizations of all sizes and types from emerging economies been suggested in the literature. The suggested AIP model is the unique proposition of the paper.

Abstract:
The current market competition is becoming increasingly fierce, and enterprises are seeking diversified development paths to better develop. With the continuous expansion of the company's scale, mergers and acquisitions are inevitable. However, the decision to acquire a company carries significant risks and will have a significant impact on the company's development. This article uses data such as stock prices, net profits, and leverage of listed companies to analyze acquisition risks using the VAR model. At the same time, the F-score model is used to compare and analyze the impact of company mergers and acquisitions before and after the acquisition, providing reasonable suggestions and methodological guidance for enterprise acquisitions.

Abstract:
Current systems with spoken language interfaces do not leverage contextual information. Therefore, they struggle with understanding speakers’ intentions. We propose a system that creates a context model from user utterances to overcome this lack of information. It comprises eight types of contextual information organized in three layers: individual, conceptual, and hierarchical. We have implemented our approach as a part of the project PARSE. It aims at enabling laypersons to construct simple programs by dialog. Our implementation incrementally generates context including occurring entities and actions as well as their conceptualizations, state transitions, and other types of contextual information. Its analyses are knowledge- or rule-based (depending on the context type), but we make use of many well-known probabilistic NLP techniques. In a user study we have shown the feasibility of our approach, achieving [Formula: see text] scores from 72% up to 98% depending on the type of contextual information. The context model enables us to resolve complex identity relations. However, quantifying this effect is subject to future work. Likewise, we plan to investigate whether our context model is useful for other language understanding tasks, e.g. anaphora resolution, topic analysis, or correction of automatic speech recognition errors.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that high-quality training data is crucial for the performance of machine learning models. This awareness has catalyzed both research endeavors and industrial initiatives dedicated to data acquisition to enhance diverse dimensions of model performance. Among these dimensions, model confidence holds paramount importance; however, it has often been overlooked in prior investigations into data acquisition methodologies. To address this gap, our work focuses on improving the data acquisition process with the goal of enhancing the confidence of Machine Learning models. Specifically, we operate within a practical context where limited samples can be obtained from a large data pool. We employ well-established model confidence metrics as our foundation, and we propose two methodologies, Bulk Acquisition (BA) and Sequential Acquisition (SA), each geared towards identifying the sets of samples that yield the most substantial gains in model confidence. Recognizing the complexity of BA and SA, we introduce two efficient approximate methods, namely kNN-BA and kNN-SA, restricting data acquisition to promising subsets within the data pool. To broaden the applicability of our solutions, we introduce a Distribution-based Acquisition approach that makes minimal assumption regarding the data pool and facilitates the data acquisition across various settings. Through extensive experimentation encompassing diverse datasets, models, and parameter configurations, we demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed methods across a range of tasks. Comparative experiments with alternative applicable baselines underscore the superior performance of our proposed approaches.

Abstract:
In seismic data processing, static corrections for near-surface velocities are derived from first-break picking. The quality of the static corrections is paramount to developing an accurate shallow velocity model, a model that in turn greatly impacts the subsequent seismic processing steps. Because even small errors in first-break picking can greatly impact the seismic velocity model building, it is necessary to pick high-quality traveltimes. Whereas various artificial intelligence-based methods have been proposed to automate the process for data with medium to high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), these methods are not applicable to low-S/N data, which still require intensive labor from skilled operators. We successfully replace 160 hours of skilled human work with 10 hours of processing by a single NVIDIA Quadro P6000 graphical processing unit by reducing the number of human picks from the usual 5%–10% to 0.19% of available gathers. High-quality inferred picks are generated by convolutional neural network-based machine learning trained from the human picks.

Abstract:
I analyzed merges and acquisitions’ transactions and their influence on strategy and development of oil company. For analyses the deal I chose acquisition by Rosneft of Bashneft, which took place in October 2016, applying both traditional and real option models. Real option model is more difficult, but better methodology, because it allows to valuate different scenarios of acquisition, choose more optimal scheme (acquisition time, amount of acquired shares). After building decision tree I calculated NPV of cash flows, which are generated in the deal (in scenarios of high and low oil prices, high and low synergy effects in two periods 2017–2018 and 2019–2020).The main results are the following. Acquisition deals create value for shareholders, only if acquisitions correspond to strategy of bidder company and culture of target company. Under some hypotheses the acquisition of Bashneft creates additional value for Rosneft in most scenarios (except scenario with low oil price and low synergy). Postponing the decision about complete acquisition till 2019 increases probability of successful acquisition as well as maximizes NPV.

Abstract:
In this paper, we proposed a model of how corporate acquisition influences industrial performance by exploring industry-level and firm-level ownership characteristics in emerging markets. Based on a database of 1,934 acquisitions of listed firms in China, we examined the relationship between corporate acquisition type and industrial performance and the moderating effects of industrial and firm ownership characteristics. The study generated three major findings: 1) compared with cross-industry acquisitions, intra-industry acquisitions of firms have a stronger positive effect on industrial performance; 2) corporate ownership and industrial ownership variables exert different moderating impact on the relationship between acquisition type and industrial performance; and 3) firm ownership and industrial ownership have a joint moderating effect on the relationship between acquisition type and industrial performance. By conceptually arguing and empirically verifying how multi-level factors influence industrial performance in the context of emerging economies, we contributed to the study of the relationship between the micro-level firm acquisition and the macro-level industrial development in several distinct ways.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of using Fryer teaching model on 7th grade students' acquisition of scientific concepts. The researchers were interested in testing if differences between students’ acquisitions of scientific concepts were dependent on previous achievement. Also important was to test if students' acquisition of scientific concepts correlated with attitudes towards using Fryer model. To achieve the objectives of the study, a quasi-experimental method was used. Two instruments were developed: a test to measure the acquisition of the scientific concepts and a questionnaire to measure students' attitudes. The study sample consisted of 72 students who were divided into two groups: one (n=37) studied science using Fryer model; the other (n=35) used the traditional method. At the end of the experiment, concepts acquisition test was administered to both groups; while the attitude scale was administered to the experimental group. The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the acquisition of scientific concepts in favor of the experimental group; and the previous achievement in favor of high achievers. There was an interaction effect between method and previous achievement. The results also revealed a statistically significant correlation between the acquisition of scientific concepts and attitudes towards learning using Fryer model among 7 graders.

Abstract:
Islamic finance is a financial concept based on Islamic sharia. The underlying principle of Islamic finance is the prohibition of usury, gharar and masyir. In addition to these principles, the concept of Islamic finance which is built on the basis of justice makes many people tend to choose Islamic finance rather than conventional. In this article, we will discuss the Sharia investment model with a profit-loss sharing scheme as an alternative model to replace the practice of lending money at high interest by moneylenders in traditional markets (Rentenir scheme). Both models are applied in a lending transaction between traders and investors with a share of the results in the profit-loss sharing model of 5% and interest on loan repayments for the loan sharks of 20%. Furthermore, from each model the acquisition value is calculated in the form of the optimal portion / profit ratio for each trader and investor. The results obtained indicate that the earnings obtained by traders for the Sharia model are greater than those from the Rentenir model. Furthermore, the acquisition value of investors for the Sharia model is minus and the acquisition value of investors from the Rentenir model is 25.56%. The acquisition value of investors from the Rentenir model is very high, while in the Sharia model, investors experience losses. From these two parameters it can be concluded that the Sharia model with a profit sharing scheme is a model that benefits small traders, while the Rentenir model is a model that needs to be avoided because it is detrimental to traders and also uses the concept of usury which is forbidden in Islam.

Abstract:
Acquisitions constitute substantial corporate investments, often leading to changes in ownership and top management giving rise to possible conflicts of interest. The impacts of such conflicts following an acquisition are absorbed by the acquirer and are referred to as agency costs. This study focuses on exploring the influence of the target companies on changes in the post-acquisition agency costs of acquiring companies. A panel fixed effects model is used to analyze acquisitions that took place between 2008–09 and 2019–20. The study’s findings indicate that post-acquisition changes in the agency costs of acquirers significantly vary based on the presence of domestic and foreign promoters in the target company. Further promoter groups such as domestic promoters and foreign promoters contribute to conflicting interests, exacerbating post-acquisition agency costs. The monitoring role assumed by foreign promoters of target companies plays a pivotal part in reducing the post-acquisition agency costs of acquirers. Foreign promoters also positively influence post-acquisition profitability by adversely affecting operating expenses, suggesting that they mitigate agency costs by exerting control over management through the monitoring of debt, cash, and profitability. The post-acquisition utilization of the target’s cash reserves positively correlates with the operating expenses of the acquirer. It is observed that the acquisition of larger targets magnifies agency costs.

Abstract:
The unfavorable economic situation, that prevailed in the first five years from the financial crisis that it invaded in Greece in 2010, caused very serious problems regarding the organization of the Greek banking sector. This resulted in the in-depth restructuring of the Greek banking system with acquisitions and mergers in order to create large systemic and crisis-resistant banks, in order to be able to face the looming upcoming profitability problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the profitability ratios of the both target and bidder banks that they took place in the wave of acquisitions during the financial crisis and to find out if there is any improvement of profitability to the remained bidder systemic Greek banks. For this reason, we examine and analyze the profitability using the DuPont method three years before the acquisition and three years after the acquisition. Essentially, we study whether the major acquisitions carried out by the Greek systemic banks during the financial crisis had improved their profitability in the short and long term time period. So we describe a general theoretical framework of the DuPont model and the theoretical framework profitability ratios that are part of the DuPont modulus Keywords: Banks, Mergers & Acquisitions, Profitability, DuPont Analysis. Abstract:
One approach to the problem of formulating domain models for planning is to learn the models from example action sequences. The LOCM system demonstrated the feasibility of learning domain models from example action sequences only, with no observation of states before, during or after the plans. LOCM uses an object-centred representation, in which each object is represented by a single parameterised state machine. This makes it powerful for learning domains which fit within that representation, but there are some well-known domains which do not. This paper introduces LOCM2, a novel algorithm in which the domain representation of LOCM is generalised to allow multiple parameterised state machines to represent a single object. This extends the coverage of domains for which an adequate domain model can be learned. Abstract:
Metaphors being at the heart of our language and thought process, computationally modelling them is imperative for reproducing human cognitive abilities. In this work, we propose a plausible grounded cognitive model for artificial metaphor acquisition. We put forward a rule-based metaphor acquisition system, which doesn't make use of any prior 'seed metaphor set'. Through correlation between a video and co-occurring commentaries, we show that these rules can be automatically acquired by an early learner capable of manipulating multi-modal sensory input. From these grounded linguistic concepts, we derive classes based on lexico-syntactical language properties. Based on the selectional preferences of these linguistic elements, metaphorical mappings between source and target domains are acquired.

Abstract:
Aims and Objectives: This article proposes the “scalpel model,” a new model of third and additional language (L3/Ln) acquisition. The model aims to identify and examine what happens beyond the initial state of acquisition and what factors may influence change from one state of knowledge to another. Methodology: The article briefly examines the currently proposed hypotheses and models and evaluates the existing evidence for their predictions. It highlights several cognitive and experiential factors affecting crosslinguistic influence that are not taken into account by the current models. These factors include: structural linguistic complexity; misleading input or lack of clear unambiguous evidence for some properties or constructions; construction frequency in the target L3; and prevalent language activation or use. Data and analysis: Findings of recently published research are discussed in support of the scalpel model. In particular, findings of differential learnability of properties within the same groups of learners suggest that L1 or L2 transfer happens property by property and is influenced by diverse factors. Findings: The scalpel model explicitly argues that wholesale transfer of one of the previously acquired languages does not happen at the initial stages of acquisition because it is not necessary. It also argues that transfer can be from the L1 or the L2 or both, but it is not only facilitative. Originality: The new model increases the explanatory coverage of the current experimental findings on how the L3/Ln linguistic representations develop. Implications: The model emphasizes the importance of the cognitive, experiential, and linguistic influences on the L3/Ln beyond transfer from the L1 or L2. Thus, it aligns L3/Ln acquisition with current debates within L2 acquisition theory.

Abstract:
How similar are the cognitive and linguistic profiles of those children who easily learn to read? How similar are the profiles of those children who have difficulty learning to read? Do the profiles of successful and less successful readers vary among children 5–10 years of age? These were the questions that guided this study. Six core profiles were identified on four fluid reasoning to comprehension knowledge constructs previously found to be both theoretically and empirically linked to children's reading acquisition: auditory processing, crystallized ability, processing speed, and short-term memory. Cluster analysis was used to develop this taxonomy and the six-cluster solution was supported through cross-validation. The internal and external validity of the resulting profiles was favorable, suggesting homogeneous within-cluster membership and clear separation among the six core profiles. A summary of the defining characteristics for each profile is provided. The performance of children comprising different profiles was investigated on four external reading outcomes. These comparisons were conducted for each of the six age groups comprising the sample (i.e., 5–10 years) to assess whether the importance of certain score configurations varied as a function of the reading tasks required of children learning to read and those who are already readers. Results indicated that certain profiles were associated with greater success on external measures of reading achievement than other profiles. Trends across ages and differences among age groups are described.

Abstract:
We propose that Dutch children acquire and use knowledge of Dutch spelling through a series of stages we call the 12321 model. At first, a single phase for the mapping of speech onto writing suffices, but in later stages of instruction, two or three mapping phases are needed. This is one aspect of our hypothesis about spelling development. The other aspect relates to experience, which allows for storage of the mapping relation between larger parts of speech and concomitant larger strings of letters. As a consequence, the necessary number of mapping phases for words or parts of words that are frequently used decreases from three to two, and ultimately to one once more — hence the name 12321 model.

Abstract:
As the first link in the information chain, Information Acquisition has become one of the most important branches in information science and technology. A basic information acquisition process is a multi-layer one that consists of the material layer for signal transduction, the data layer for sensor data fusion and the perception layer for information abstraction. While the material layer can be described as a continuous channel in information transmission, the data layer is a multiple discrete channel in the communication system. To analyze the perception layer, the μ-space theory in high dimensional geometric topology and the Γ-space theory based on statistical mechanics are introduced. A general model of information acquisition, which explains the working principle of intelligent sensors with self-adaptive function, is established according to the acquisition process and bionic principle.

Abstract:
In the past two decades, the number of cross-border mergers and acquisitions in ASEAN has progressively expanded as the region has become a desired economic market for trade and investment. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors contributing to the success of acquisitions by corporations. It investigates the role of acquisition management capability with strategic integration and acquisition. The non-probability sampling strategy was used to collect information from 51 firms. With a five-point Likert scale, a systematic questionnaire was designed to test the latent variables by employing confirmatory factor analysis. The quantitative method of Structural Equation Modeling was used in the analysis. The results show that the structural model had a Goodness of Fit Index value that indicates all three latent variables and independent variables were valid. The findings indicate that acquisition management capability have a central role in advancing the overall integration of the acquiring firm in the ASEAN context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA) is a new model used for e-book acquisition by academic libraries. A key component of this model is to make records of e-books available in a library catalog and let actual patron usage decide whether or not an item is purchased. However, there has been a lack of research examining the role of the library catalog as a tool for e-book discovery and use in PDA. This paper presents a case study of using PDA for e-book acquisition in an academic library, with a focus on the role of the library catalog in this purchasing model. The implications and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:
Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is a high-resolution model-building technique that uses the entire recorded seismic data content to build the earth model. Conventional FWI usually utilizes diving and refracted waves to update the low-wavenumber components of the velocity model. However, updates are often depth limited due to the limited offset range of the acquisition design. To extend conventional FWI beyond the limits imposed by using only transmitted energy, we must utilize the full acquired wavefield. Analyzing FWI kernels for a given geology and acquisition geometry can provide information on how to optimize the acquisition so that FWI is able to update the velocity model for targets as deep as basement level. Recent long-offset ocean-bottom node acquisition helped FWI succeed, but we would also like to be able to utilize the shorter-offset data from wide-azimuth data acquisitions to improve imaging of these data sets by developing the velocity field with FWI. FWI models are heading toward higher and higher wavenumbers, which allows us to extract pseudoreflectivity directly from the developed velocity model built with the acoustic full wavefield. This is an extremely early start to obtaining a depth image that one would usually produce in much later processing stages.

Abstract:
This paper considers how best to sequence the acquisition of new locations (e.g. office park buildings, multi-tenant units, etc.) to expand the coverage area or fill in the geographic footprint of a network service provider or other business-service activities. Consider several locations, candidates for acquisition, on the plane. Each location will generate a certain revenue stream for the service provider if it is acquired. In addition, once a location has been acquired (i.e. served), it may be less expensive to acquire other nearby locations. The problem addressed in this paper is: Given a finite budget for acquisitions and a model for the acquisition costs, how to sequence the acquisitions to maximize the total new revenue from the locations acquired? A specific cost model is proposed, an integer programming formulation of the problem and its transformations presented. Properties of the models and of the optimal solution are discussed. Finally, an effective heuristic method intended for applications is developed. Features of the solutions are demonstrated by a numerical study.
